GR Corolla vs GR Yaris w/ Civic Type R, Golf R, Lancia Delta Integrale - Jason Cammisa on the ICONS

2023 ж. 20 Сәу.
2 043 177 Рет қаралды

This is the definitive review of the Toyota GR Corolla, for the first time tested against the GR Yaris, the FL5 11th-generation Honda Civic Type R, and Mk8 Volkswagen Golf R - all with manual transmissions.
As always, award-winning automotive journalist Jason Cammisa brings perspective and insight into this review, starting with Volkswagen inventing the hot-hatch segment with the original Mk1 GTI, Lancia inventing the super-hatch segment with the homologation-special Delta Integrale.
SCCA Hall of Fame race-car driver co-stars in this full-length review, setting a new record lap time at the Streets of Willow racetrack in Southern California, even though he's still coughing after a battle with COVID-19.
In fact, it's the Coronavirus that sets the stage here - the global pandemic was a reminder that life is too short to take anything seriously, including drifts, sliding, understeer, and Toyota's GR-4 All-Wheel Drive system.
In the process, Jason falls through a bush, a Lancia Delta blows flames out of its exhaust, we drag race a GR Corolla Morizo versus a GR Yaris, we race them around a track, listen to Typhoid Randy coughing, Randy sets new FWD and hot-hatch lap records, the Corolla calls 9-1-1 on us 9 times, we learn who Mr. Morizo is, and Jason realizes, thanks to Adam Sandler, that he's actually a nobody.

  • This video wasn't just a performance comparison of these new vehicles, it was an ode to life, success, determination, and a thank you to Toyota, specifically Akio Toyoda himself. I also believe this marks the end of an era because as he steps down from his role, whoever Akio is being replaced by, will be meeting the demands of the industry that made Akio himself could not appease anymore. For us enthusiasts, Akio was the industry leader we needed, but for society, he's seen as a barrier, sadly. It's a bittersweet journey, perhaps, maybe, the end of a chapter (for now).

    @ritchierichh@ritchierichh Жыл бұрын
    • Mr. Akio Toyoda's new stage seems to be a political fight to protect not only Toyota but also those who work in the automobile industry around the world, and to continue to give dreams to automobile fans. Also, the new president is a MORIZO child, so I don't think there will be any wavering.

    • Too bad they didn't do a recap or recommendation. I feel like the GR Murizo is the better "track car" but the better "everyday car" probably goes to a Standard Corolla. The best of both worlds is the Golf R. It's nicer inside, very practical, and drives great on the road but offers previous-generation of supercar performance at your fingertips and shreds on the race track. Although, sometimes it's better to have two tools for different jobs: a boring beater car for the road, then a sports adventure for the weekends (ie bike, sports car, jet ski, etc etc).

  • For the sake of clarity, the GR Yaris WRC didn't happen because the WRC implemented testing restrictions amid COVID-19. By the time the GR Yaris homologation special would've been allowed to test, Toyota had run out of time to properly develop it for the 2021 season, which would've been its only competitive season anyway as the Rally1 regs were set to come in a year later. From DirtFish: _"Its first test was in February 2020 but by April the FIA had imposed a ban on testing due to the effects of the pandemic being realized globally. Toyota attempts to grant itself an exception as it wasn’t seeking to test its current car but its 2021 car. However the FIA stands firm and says no."_ These days, the teams build spaceframe chassis that they then turn into stuff that looks like the road cars, so not only is this the first proper homologation special story we've seen from the WRC in years, but it's likely to be the last one we see for a while.

    • The good thing is Toyota is currently developing a Rally2 version of the GR Yaris, production body (just like the old WRC regulation) & kept the 3cyl turbo engine as well (which was designed to be homologated for R5/Rally2 use).

    • Thank you. Gets on my nerves that overrated GR Yaris is called "homologation special" by neckbeards who yearn for old times and think this is something like Ford RS200 or Lancia in this video. GR Yaris never raced in WRC and never will. Also, how can he say "most powerful 3 cyl engine in the world", when next to Yaris is Corolla with more powerful engine?

It made 194 bhp which these days doesn't sound a lot, but believe me, it was an absolute weapon I've always had fast car's, but the delta is the one that stands out! • Fun fact - the team of engineers responsible for the Delta, in 1992 was moved to work on Alfa 155 DTM, which won the first year it went against new competitors. Than they worked on the Alfa Romeo 156. The 156 uses the same rear suspension as the Delta (only the Q4 version of 155 used something similar while other 155 models were just Fiat Tempras) but also a double wishbone fron suspension. So the closest you can get to a Delta Integrale but on the cheap, is Alfa 156 Crosswagon Q4. It also uses very similar 4 wheel drive system but has a 150 hp Alfa JTD diesel that can eat additional power like no other

  • Like comparisons in other countries it’s hard to compare apples with apples due to the huge differences in tyre ability. The circuit pack GR Yaris comes with pilot sport 4S tyres that make a huge difference on their own. I know they can only test what they have but, I’d love to see this test again with everything on the same rubber. Great video and very enjoyable to watch.
