Letting The Wood Choose - Wood Turning - New Video!
A beautiful piece of spalted Weeping Birch caused me to turn a round bowl for a change! Most of my turnings are natural pieces with bark, bark inclusions, voids, etc. This piece is perfect except for some punkiness that did give me some extra work to do. Still, it polished up beautifully and it was fun to turn! More pieces of this wood to follow in the coming months.

I sure appreciate that, Nathan, thank you! 😊
“Round, I’m not familiar with round.” One of my favorite things you’ve ever said😂 God Bless You. I’m so glad you are feeling better.
Haha, thanks, Bill! 😊
Outstanding. Very well done. I’m envious of the differing wood species you get to turn. 👍👍👍
Thank you, Steve! Yes, I have the best, most generous viewers ever! 😀
It is March 26, 2023. I just thought it was funny that this has been out a year and this is the first time I remember seeing it. And you’re right that wood it’s gorgeous. I like the way you shaped it not just round. Such a beautiful piece. Thank you for sharing it.
I'm glad you found it and like it, Lynda, thank you! 😄
Phil, you are the biggest of the big boys. Truly a work of art by the master! May you remain healthy, blessed and highly favored! 💜💜👏👏👏
So kind of you, Jo Ann, thank you! 😊
Wow! Fantastic piece. It's enjoyable watching you let the wood determine the shape. I did see both the werewolf and the bird, facing different directions. Would also like to add, you sound like you're feeling much better, hopefully that is the case. Nice job as always. 🙂
😊
Square, Round or Wonky it's the wood and the man that makes it a Phil Bowl. Marvelous!
😊
Always glad to see your postings. I whole heartedly agree with 'Artist's Priviledge'
Thanks, Ken! 😃
I see an alien world, with oceans, islands and continents. This is a lovely change on what you normally do Phil. No need to envy the 'Big Kids' as you call them, you're right up there with the best of them in my humble opinion. And i can't wait to see what you will do with the other cuts. It's always a pleasure to see you turn!
Glad you enjoyed it, Ben, thank you! 😊
Birch is such a fantastic wood … no wonder furniture designers almost go bananas over it
Yes! 😊
Phil don't care what you turn as long as you're turning Enjoy watching you turn. Always an interesting project. Wait patently for each new one.
😊
Lovely piece. The finish is beautiful. I’m glad you let the piece speak to you.
Thank you very much! Yes, it worked out! 😊
That is truly a gorgeous bowl, Phil! It was fun trying to follow your text messaged directions for parting the rather large log section and I certainly hope the result was as satisfying for you to turn as it was for me to watch! And best of all, Phil-- you are finally back! Welcome home!
Thanks a lot, Dave! I wish I could say I'm back but I'm just not. Maybe one day, I hope! 😊
Thank you for supporting Phil's habit! 😁
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Trust me on this-- you're closer to being "back" than I am right now. But I am afraid that your hill to climb is tougher than mine.
@@Little_Red_Riding_Hoodlum You should see what I *haven't * sent! 😉
Thanks for giving Phil that piece of wood, Dave.
Well, that's very different, and yet very beautiful. The wood has spoken, it wanted to be a silky smooth bowl. Happy wood, happy turner. Thanks again Phil.
😊
I appreciate your happy wood turning. Sometimes I have marveled at the ugly items that you make beautiful. Keep up the happy wood wok Thank you for your videos.
😊
Phil, So happy to see you made it to your shop and turned a bowl! Very happy for you! Respectfully, Kevin
Thanks a lot, Kevin, it felt good! 😊
What do I see? I see master turner plying his trade. Everything you make is well thought out and skillfully executed. This piece makes a nice change from your usual work. Lovely, I would be proud to own it and say it was a Phil Anderson piece. I would be even prouder to have turned it myself, I'll get there. Please, please, keep up the good work, my friend.
Thank you, Gregory! 😊
So happy when your name pops up. :-) I was second. :-)
Happy to see you here too, Mandy! 😊
Welcome back to my home. Missing the wonderful smell of the wood shaving. thank you
You and me both! 😊
It’s with great pleasure to see in shape and back on your Trojan horse turning just about anything under the sun made of wood and execute your vision fantastically and beautifully.
Thanks, Sylvie! 👍
That was a BEAUTIFUL outcome! I wish there was a "love" button next to the thumbs up button. ❤❤❤
Haha, thank you kindly, Mary! 😊
Beautiful bowl Phil even if it is "normal". You have shown me and have me trying my own natural edges. Good to see you back at the lathe.
Good to know, Benjamin, thank you! 😊
Waffle waffle waffle, I love it, what better way to explain to a novice, you leave nothing out. As always your job turns out beautiful. Keep it up Phil.
Glad you enjoyed it, Tim, thanks! 😊
Phil stylish bowl you turned it to perfection getting the best out of the grain. Again you simply the best.
😊
I see a dragon's head in the spalting. When working with wood, it's always a good idea to listen to what it tells you. The piece is fairly simple, but the wood you used and the craftsmanship of your turning and finishing makes it a complex and interesting piece of art. Well done, Phil!
thats what i saw lol then bird when he said it
How nice of you, Sabrina, thank you! 😊
Great to see you feeling well and that is one beautiful bowl
Thanks, Tim! 😊
You're quite right about letting the wood speak for itself. Turning exotic shapes works well for a lot of pieces, but that mellow, spalted wood looks like an ancient map. The elegant bowl shape shows that off, while not overpowering the effect of the grain. Good one.
That's what I thought too, Jim. Thanks! 😊
I love that you got to do something you normally don't get to do. Simple. clean design on this and it turned out beautifully! Great job, Phil! 👍!!!!
Thanks a lot, Tom! 😊
Good evening, Phil. Well done on the cut-up. We enjoyed watching the bowl being made a much as you enjoyed turning it. Thanks for giving us a video for all of us to enjoy.
Glad you enjoyed it, Ray, thanks! 😊
Beautiful grain
Yes! 😊
Hello Phil. I'm glad you enjoyed making this bowl so much. I certainly enjoyed watching the final pattern of the spalting revealing itself as it chose to do. Thank you to Dave for sending and you for sharing and see you soon.
😊
disappointed? no, not hardly. yet another awesome piece. thank you!
😊
Beautiful turning Phil! I really like it.
Thanks a lot, Dana! 😊
Such a pleasant surprise, what a great piece of wood expertly turned. The other pieces look promising too. Can’t wait to see them.
😊
As aregular viewer, I can truthfully say I am not disappointed. I see a Ghost in the long splating on the outside.
Cool, Jody, thanks! 😊
I saw a crows head! I watch at least one-three videos per week. I truly love you constant chatter.
Thanks for spending time with me, Roger! 😊
fantastic piece love the shape and spalting. great stuff!
Thanks, Danny! 😊
Welcome back, Phil. I love this piece. I realize that it is much different from your usual pieces but I think this might be one of my very favorite of your turnings. Yes, that would have a lot to do with what Mother Nature gave you to work with but your turning was absolutely masterful. Also, your decision on how to turn it was so well planned. You are the master, my friend, and it was a pleasure to watch you turn this one! I'm sure you are as happy to be back in your shop as we are to have you back. Stay well, buddy!! .....Gord
Thank you, Gord! Yes, it was great to be back at the lathe for a couple days. Hopefully more to come! 😊 Take good care, my friend!
the spalting of the wood is amazing. Round is Sound !
😊
That bowl is beautiful. So good to see you back to your old self Phil 😊😊😊👍👍👍♥️
Thank you kindly, Kelvin! 😊
That is beautiful! The dark vein marks and finish are amazing. Very nice video.
Thank you, John! 😊
Wow! Amazing spalting and finished bowl, Phil! Very cool. It was weird when you turned the bowl around to hollow. I thought to my self, “What? No live edge? No bark?” You’re a wonderful artist regardless of the wood in front of you. Such a pleasure to watch you.
Thought you tuned into the wrong channel, huh, Danella! 😊
Almost, Darling… Almost. It’s nice to see you feeling well enough to be back making shavings, Phil.
I'll second that.. His work is inspirational.
Love the spalted Birch thanks Phil, I enjoy watching your videos.
😊
Yay Phil!! Welcome to the Round world of turning!! Beautiful bowl, sir and beautiful wood….!
😊
Looks great like the shape 👍
Great, thank you! 😊
I like how you chose to section off the wood. Nothing wrong with turning a classic shape when the wood says to do so. It turned out very nice. Hope it does not spoil you into turning “regular” pieces too often.🤣🤣🤣. Your voice sounds much steadier, so feel free to turn more “easier” pieces so you don’t overdo while your health continues to improve.👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks, Valerie! Looking forward to turning the cut-offs! 😊
Another pretty turning by the "MASTER"... Wonderful to see you back Phil...
Thank you, Cecil! 😊
Not disappointed at all with a round turn! And it is great to see turning again. Thank you so much!
😊
What a nice piece of timber. It just looks good, even as clean piece. Was interesting to hear that you said you prefer a tenon since it is more stable. I broke the tenon of from a piece twice today and decided finally to use a recess the next time.
I've had both tenon and recess let go and or break, Bruno. But overall, I just prefer a tenon. That's what makes the world go 'round, right! 😊
A masterpiece as always. I just love your style of wood turning. Also I tried to make some flowers on the lathe. Not as good as yours. Love your work. Glad to have you back in the shop .
Thank you, Robert! Sorry about the flowers. Tight grain wood and super sharp skew should do the trick. 😊
That is beautiful....you were so right to let the wood speak. Can't wait for your next piece.
😊
Phil just a beautiful piece. I'm so happy to see and hear you acting so much better. You have a great personality for teaching. I'm really happy to see you back. Really Really happy 😊
😊
I love this piece Phil. The spalting is incredible and the outside shape of the bowl is pleasant to look at. Another awesome piece! Cosmo from Billerica, Ma.
😊
Beautiful piece Phil! As for "your" style of art: you have inspired me. I am going to attempt to turn more natural pieces myself. But don't worry, I believe my style will still differ from yours. Look for some of my stuff coming this summer . I hope!
Sounds like a great plan, Jeff! 😊
One of my favorites Love the Birch with the spalting… Good to see you back in your shop and feeling better
😊
Looks like a Cardinal. WELL DONE ! ! ! .....Newk from Kentucky
😊
Welcome back Phil, missed you and I agree with you regarding the outstanding outcome of the white birch piece .....And just think you never missed a beat with your time away... Its Good spending time with you again..
😊
Phil I think your “normal” bowl just serves to show off the abnormal beauty in the spalting. I love it.You sure do sound like your doing better. Thanks for that! Cheers, Rick
😊
This is more what I like.
😊
Great to see you back and feeling better Phil - and it's a beautiful bowl too - thanks!
Thank you too for watching, Paully! 😊
Whoa! Phil is going every kind of rogue today!
Haha, so true, Kerri! 😊
As always Phil you turned another gorgeous piece. Turning it round showed off the beautiful spalting in the wood. Glad you are feeling better Phil.
😊
Love the spalting. Great turn. I watch and learn from all your videos. Love the mixing it up this time. Thanks Phil.
😊
Beautiful bowl. It's OK that it's "normal".🙂
Good to know, Anna, thanks!! 😊
I see one beautiful round bowl! Simple and lovely!
😊
No such thing as "Regular " everyone is unique. Looks great.
😊
That's such a beautiful bowl. Gotta love spalting.
😊
Oh my friend Phil, you are indeed the maestro, the professor of wood turning and believe me, I think I have learnt enough about showcasing bark. I have not been able to see much about your mastery in turning pieces without bark - which, I am sure, you have also mastered. Please consider the rest of us who enjoy the wider appreciation of "artistic wood turning, as I have enjoyed that piece👍.
I'm glad you've learned about turned pieces with bark, Daniel. 😃 It's what I like to do. I try to keep as much nature in my pieces as possible. I have turned several pieces without bark, even "artistic" pieces. There are two things about that, for me. I find a nice square or round, flawless piece, intimidating. I don't know what to do with them. If I finally figure out what to do with them, I find I'm not having any fun and they end up like a perfectly flawless turning that anyone could do. Rather boring. I'll stick to what I know and do best, if that's OK with you.
Fantastic piece of turning Phil. Nice to see you turning something a little different from your usual. You know that you could turn a rolling pin and we would all be just as happy to watch. It's also encouraging to hear you sounding more like your old self. Keep well and keep the magic going. We all learn so much from the way you work and present your videos
Thank you so much, Mike! 😊
Beautiful bowl Phil.Glad you are doing okay. You are the Master. You can’t do any better than your best.
Thank you, Bob! 😊
It's really good to see you back Phil, and in excellent turning form too - 'for the books'.
Thank you, David! 😊
Schmatzy spaltzy! Gorgeous.
😊
I think that the spalting looks great. I see a couple of birds. Well done Phil.
😊
That is gorgeous. Makes me think of an old black and white map that has aged in places. Crazy beautiful !
Agreed, it does look like that, Patricia! 😄
So glad your back, please take care of your self.see you next time
Thanks, Jim! 😊
Missed you Phil. Welcome back. Love the work. See something new in the grain every time.
😊
Beautiful Spalding in the wood. It's always fun to do something different. It keeps our thinking fresh. Well done Phil. 👍
😊
That's a beautiful turning! I see dragons in the mist!
😊
That bowl is just plain pretty.
Thanks, Dave! 😊
I love this bowl it is the most beautiful piece you have done in my book!!!🤩🤩🤩
Wow, thank you, Gloria! 😊
It’s a wonderful bowl and a beautiful piece of wood. I love watching and listening to your videos Phil. Thank you very much 🙏
Many thanks, Derek! 😊
There’s never any need to apologize for the works of art that you consistently bring out to f the pieces you turn!! They’ve all been beautifully done!!
Thanks, Jonathan! 😊
You’re very welcome!! We all love watching you turn these awesome pieces!
I’m actually wanting to get a lathe, and, all the other things needed to start turning wood. I work for a tree service, so, I basically have a never ending supply of wood, unique and otherwise.
@@jonathanmiddleton1141 Yup, you should definitely have a lathe, Jon!
I just love your beautiful bowl! Just like the "BIG boys"😉 Very pleased your feeling good enough to treat us to another video. Thanks 👍
😊
Wonderful to have you back in my feed Phil! I hope things are going well for you. Beautiful piece!
😊
Absolutely gorgeous ❤️ Beautiful wood! Light & Dark ❤️😉
😃
As always, a pleasure. God bless.
😊
😊
I love that you use all you can. A true artist.
😊
I"m seeing a bird's head, then the rest of the bowl has me seeing fish and a variety of ocean creatures in motion. Anyway, it's a beauty and I really enjoy the spalted stuff also on the light color woods.
Love that! Thanks, Robert! 😊
Phil. Again Thank You From a none turner It’s Fascinating to watch your work
😊
PHIL glad your back been concerned about you if you've been sick glad your feeling better
😊
All I can say is WOW !! And good to see you back at it...Dennis
Thank you very much, Dennis! 😊
It is gorgeous. It was fun to see the bowl come alive.
Thank you, Nancy! 😊
A lovely bowl. Thanks for turning it, Phil.
😊
There you go again. You let the piece talk to you and tell you how to (turn it) to bring out his best features. When your as talented as you can never make a mistake (its called ON THE FLY ADJUSTMENT) you just change courses while you are turning and listen to what it tells you to do.. BEAUTIFUL as always. KEEP ON TURNING
Thank you, Howard! 😊
I’m so glad you are feeling better!! It’s so good to see you!
Thank you, Nicole!! 😊
I am so thankful for turners like yourself that goes on you tube and shares their immense talent. You said that there was a small piece that you did not know what you were going to with it. I turn pens and would appreciate any scraps (1"x1"x5"). Just bundle them and tell me what you want for them and Dave can help both of us. Thank you, Ronald Harlow
Thanks for watching, Ronald! I wish I had time for stuff l like that. I can't even sell my work because I don't have time for packing and shipping. I do, however, have a ton of pen blanks. Stop over some time and I'll give you some. 😊
WOW I didn't know birch trees were so so beautiful wood. great and weldone.
Yeah, Birch can be quite beautiful, sometimes, Manjit. Thanks! 😊
I just love spalted wood and you certainly did this piece justice Phil! Great to see you back in the shop! See you in the next one friend!
😊
I believe that’s the first round bowl I’ve seen you make! Love the wood! For sure the fastest speed!
Yup, it doesn't happen very often. The wood pretty much dictates the shape and this one said "ROUND!" 😊
