Rhododendron ROOT BEAUTY! - Wood Turning
Sometimes a piece just calls out and says "pick me, pick ME!" That's what this one did. I'm glad I gave in though it wasn't much of a fight. I love turning root balls and this turns out to be one of my favorites! Finished in shellac.

It's gorgeous! I'm very happy that you were able to figure a way to mount this one, Phil. I've stared at it for several years and couldn't figure that out. So, sending it your way was absolutely the right decision. An incredibly beautiful bowl! Very well turned/unturned! 👍
Thanks, Dave for sending this to me. I knew it was a winner as soon as I opened the package! I love it, buddy! 😊
Phil! What a wonderful piece! So many awesome characteristics. I appreciate you so much and look forward to every video! 💪You are one of the greatest turners and keep the true nature in every piece you work on! Be well Phil! 😃
Thanks a lot, David! 😊
Allways a pleasure to watch how you fall in love with a peace of wood. For other people bark mulch, for us a beautiful gift Mother Nature send us. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for watching! 😊
Phil you have an amazing relationship with mother earth 💜 Thank you
😊
I haven't heard that excitement in your voice for sometime now, this piece really got your mojo back, I can see why I love it too, good job Phil, seem to have heard that a few times lately too. Shows you are on the up.
Thank you, Lewis! 😊
Wow Phil you are right. This is one beautiful and unique bowl. I would say it is right on the top of the list for my favorite. For sure the rounded areas fit right in there with all the nature. Smarties might look good in it but they look pretty darn good in a a paper picnic bowl...just ask Gord LOL You have a right to be proud of this one my friend! Take care, Gary
Thanks a lot, Gary! This one just spoke to me and mapped out the whole turn. I just held the chisel. Hard to go wrong with a rhody root! 😊
Hard to beat turning on Auto Pilot! But for sure you have programed it very well!
I beginning to realize that you are a natural ham. You play to the camera. And don't you dare stop. Your conversation, both to us and to yourself is what keeps us coming back. Giving a part of yourself is what wants us to give back, to know you better, to send you crazy chunks of wood and watch you work your magic on them. You don't make your videos into a classroom where you have a particular skill or knowledge that you are trying to impart. Instead, each video is, if I may borrow the phrase, a magical mystery tour. Another extraordinary bowl, Phil. Keep those chips flying. Best.
Paul called, he wants his lyrics back! 😊
Phil perfect turning. Perfect vision perfect finish🌈. Perfect Perfect Perfect 🤩
😊
Happy to see you, Phil. Keep your spirits up, we'll be here when you are.
I appreciate that 😊
With all the bad news going on in the world, it's nice to end the week on a good note with the simplicity and beauty of another bowl crafted by Phil. I think I enjoy your "let's try it and see" approach and decisions you make while turning, as well as your pleasure in pointing out the natural features of the piece at the end of your videos the most. Thank you, Phil. Nicely done!
Thank you, Scott! 😊
Phil I just want to wish you well with your treatment schedule, you are a shining star to up all. Michael 🇬🇧
😊
I love hearing you talk about your beatiful creations. You make me feal like I have my hands on the piece
Wonderful! 😃
You’ve managed to take another seemingly impossible piece of wood and turn it into something that’s absolutely incredible. You truly are the best of the best. Keep on keeping on, Phil 👍🏼
Thank you very much, Derrick! 😊
Phil, that bowl is special for more than one reason. It is beautiful! Your decision-making monologue is especially entertaining. And, I didn't expect to see the Thursday video from one of my top two favorite KZhead woodturners! It was a special surprise. Take care of YOU! We'll be here if you need to take some time off. Absence make the heart grow fonder, right?
Thanks, Crystal! There might be one more video if I can get it edited before next week. 😊
I think that I shall call you Nobby Phil . Another Gnarly Masterpiece
😊
Finding or bothering to find and wash up a root is pretty special so kudos to Calmwood Creations for the dirty work and to Phil for the insight into seeing the bowl that emerged. Nice work boys.
😊
Beyond turning a bowl, this is an art piece. Much respect.
😊
Once again a masterpiece. Great to see you in the shop Phil. Sound strong in spirit. Great job Dave for sending the piece. Thank you for sharing. Keep them coming.👍👍👍🙏
😊
I picture Dave just goin' out for a leisurely stroll and eyeballing every crazy, gnarly tree just to bless Phil with a challenge! 😄
LOL! I have a great battery-op small chainsaw and permission to take whatever I want from the mixed hardwood and berry briar woods down the lane from the house. It's all going to be developed eventually, so the owner doesn't care. Apple, pear, cherry, wild plum, alder, oak, hawthorn, ash, more ash, and yet more..... Yeah, some gnarly stuff. Good job I know how to use the saw! 😁
😊
Gorgeous, Phil. In my opinion, your very best piece. Bark, cracks, rock and holes form the bundle and you formed the wonderful little bowl, that we were allowed to watch now... Thanks for this
Many thanks, Stefan! 😊
What a beauty! The "handle", as you call it, reminds me of Arches National Park in Utah. One of my and my wife's favorite hiking places. Glad you KEPT the rock where it was. That's the rock of ages. Don't use it for anything. Why hide the beauty. Is the Mona Lisa used as a tray? Great one Phil. Thx A bunch.
Thanks, Kersi! 😊
The more I look, the more I like it! Well Done Mystro! .....Newk from Kentucky
Thanks, Newk! 😃
You are very fortunate to be on the receiving end of all the beautiful pieces
Don't I just know it, Wayne! I have the best, most generous viewers I have ever heard of! They make this channel special not just for me but for all the viewers as well. So much variety! 😃

Thank you so much, Barbara! 😊
A built-in handle with a big, beautiful bowl for smarties makes for a perfect piece. I love your rhodi creation.
Thank you, Mauna! 😊
Phil,. This is a wonderful piece. It's just amazing what you do with it. You start with a grunge, dirty old rootball and you come out with a new wonderful piece
It's fun too, Roger! 😊

Wow Phil ... you've just proved to us all that flowers are not always the best part of a tree. I have a new respect for the humble rhododendron. Just beautiful 😍

All the turnings are one of a kind, but this stands out from most of the others you've done. Therefore, this is OutStanding in so many ways. A great video watching you reveal the final product.
Wow, thank you, JIm! 😊

I have to agree rounding. Those corners was a good thing. It helps set it off and bring attention to the top which is beautiful.
Thanks, Lynda! 😊

I would love to use that in a jewelry display to show off faux coral, faux ivory, turquoise, MOP and copper or rose gold pieces. One piece of art complimenting another. Drool.
😊
I have a feeling, Dave enjoys hunting wood as much as you do turning it. Beautiful.
I believe you are right, Khan! 😊

Not today you can't, Steve! LOL! Just one of those days. 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop hang on there Phil. Praying for you my friend.
Simply stunning bowl, Phil, truly gorgeous in every way. Rhododendron bushes are very beautiful, but now we know the roots even surpasses the flower florets in your hands. Been in hospital for a couple of weeks and catching up with your videos, you never disappoint dear man with your lovely chat and chuckles. Hope you're doing well and have a great week. Thank you. 💛🫂😊
I hope you are well healed and restored, Sian! 😊

Can’t believe just how much air you can turn, impressive
Haha, yeah, the air is fine! It's those hard bits in between that cause the problems! 😊
A really nice piece that was a bit of a challenge looks fabulous phill well done 👍
😊
Phil I watched it twice. 😊
Cool! Thanks, Michael! 😊
Stay positive Phil. We’ll be here when you come back if you can’t manage every week. 🌹

May be your signature piece. Interesting and beautiful, well done!
Thank you, Scott!
Outstanding, Phil. You chose every aspect so right. The amount to turn, the right place to stop. I think it'll take a day until my muscles relax from watching that tenon removal. Well done, sir!
Haha, it did get a little tense for a minute there, Jay! 😊
Phil . Your vision/planning on a difficult piece of wood is outstanding... Thanks for sharing such a beautiful turning.
Thank you very much! 😊

Howdy again from West Virginia! Love the live edge pieces! Turned out to be a real beauty! Take care & God Bless!!!
😊
Love every thing you do.you leave the wood its integrity. I also try too but your the master.😊
Thanks, Ellie! 😊
Hi Phil, I hope this finds you well. I am now the proud owner of a router and all the bells, whistles, and ding dongs that go with one. I needed one to better inlay the glass top of our coffee table. And I see that there are plenty of wood projects to do with a router. So, it soon looks like I'll be making sawdust at my homestead like you. doing projects. Safety Rule #1. Make sure the router is unplugged before switching router bits and such. It looks like I better resupply our first aid kit and medicine cabinet. Face Shield and Mask and Bandages On!!!!!
😊
Has usual your work is second to none , you are a library of information which is great for us viewers . I am sure you must have been a tree in another life . Great to see you back in the shop 🙀
Thanks, Brette! 😊

Thanks, Dave! Yup, Phil, you done good! Kept the good stuff by not overturning. 😍👍🏻
It's a hard lesson to learn, Valerie. I've ruined many pieces by not knowing when to stop. I'm glad you like this one, thank you, my friend! 😊
Lovely its a pleasure to watch you work and see how you can manage to make something out of those peices of wood
Thanks, Philip
Phil, your enthusiasm and optimism is contagious, no I won’t fast speed video to see finish. I would lose your precious tones and love of wood turning. What an amazing video by a beautiful person. I love you Phil from Oz.. I agree too magnificent a piece to try and complete turning on 5he lathe. More than one way to skin a cat as they say.
