that is what dutch elm disease does to wood
@@sandypeebles6998 no, burls are caused when the tree is damaged and heals over.
@@MikeHolton Always believed that burrs like that were caused by mites and the like. But whatever was the cause, it ‘Turned Out’ to be, pardon the pun, a beautiful piece of work.
@@johnlewis9745 thanks 🙏 there is some good info on the web showing how they form. All the best, Mike
@@MikeHolton Thanks for taking the trouble to reply.
I am here because I am on a quiet night shift and I tend to watch a lot of wood turning videos. I haven't watched you before but I have to say it was thoroughly enjoyable thank you
Awesome! Thank you Andrew and thanks for watching. 😃
You’ve certainly come to one of the best turning channels bud. I don’t know anyone on here that works as hard as Mike does to entertain us and keep us inspired. Hope you join the family!

Incredible. I love when the wood surprises us!
So glad I found your channel! It is refreshing to see someone that appreciates the wood flaws and all. No need for resins or fillers just let the wood be what it is. You do beautiful work and am amazed with your final piece. Thank you for your fresh work and sharing your talents with us.

Nice job and a rather interesting journey through the dust storm!
Glad you enjoyed it! Yep, that dust was nasty, for a few moments I could not actually see what I was turning!¬
I have to admit I face giving the woodturning a go myself
Be careful, it's addictive and you will never look at trees the same way again 😂
Love the colour and the burl holes.
They are cool, some go all the way through 😃
Stunning!

Thanks so much Linda 😀 great to have you on board.
Stumbled across your site, enjoyed watching a chunk of wood turning into an asthetic item.
Thanks and welcome, glad you liked it 😃
What a beautiful bowl! Great vid!
Glad you liked it! Thanks
Thank you for such a lovely video. It was a welcome change hearing you speak throughout, explaining the process, instead of just watching a silent movie. This is the first video of yours that I've seen and I look forward to many more.
Thanks so much Carolyn, your words mean a lot to me. I did consider that format (silent) but it felt so wrong, I love to explain what and why I'm doing something and how it could have been improved. I want to teach not to just entertain. Thanks again, Mike
Really lovely. I know nothing about wood turning, but if I had my life to do over again I’d definitely learn. I love watching your videos.
Thank you very much! I wish I has started earlier than I did but still I'm here now and having great fun :D Thanks for watching.
Beautiful.
Thank you!
this is quite unique, i have not seen a bowl like this before. very nice!
Thanks Dee, I know one thing, my workshop took a lot to get clean after this one :)

Thanks Dave 😁
Nice work, allways good Videos! I think also it‘s an Elm Burl! Thumps up from Germany!
Thank you very much, glad you are enjoying the channel, all the best, Mike
Wow! Mike this is a great video especially because due to you verbalizing your thought processes thru out the entire turn. I really enjoy that connection it gives us to the build. What an amazing elm burl bowl. This elm bowl has such a unique grain pattern, characteristics, and along with the many defects (cracks and holes) making it truly a "One-of-a-Kind" Bowl. Thank you for bringing on this adventure.
Hi Ken, so glad you enjoyed it. I'm still fairly new to this KZhead and I hope the quality and presentation of my videos will improve further. I was so glad with the way this one came out, for a while I thought I would just end up with a bucket of dust. Thanks for your support, it means a lot, Mike
The best wood turners combine craftsmanship and artistry and you are clearly a great exemplar of this.
Thanks so much Bob, not sure if I'm there yet but I do try 😃
Very impressive results. Beautiful.
Glad you like it! Thanks for watching. 😃
Love watching wood turning. Your video was fantastic and shows that you have to think on the spot sometimes and you still did a great job!
Glad you enjoyed it. I seem to get myself in a few situations where I have to think on the spot 😀
Love How This Bowl Came Out❣️ Yes I Think It's Elm Too! ❤️
Thanks, it was not sure how it would end up, but glad I stuck with it.
WOW, Nice work
Thanks Doug :)
Wonderful piece
Thanks Robert 😃
Astounding ❤
Took some finding but name out nice, thanks 😂
You're right ... that is absolutely over the top KEWL !
The grain is just mesmerising, can't stop looking at it , thanks 😃
Beautiful bowl!
Thank you very much Jason 😀
Beautiful ❤
Thank you Audie 😊
Mike, you have every right to be pleased with yourself as well as the beautiful creation you achieved. Thanks Bunches for sharing!!
Thanks 😀
Firstly, what a stunning piece. Amazing Mike, and thank you for uncovering the burls' inner beauty. I just got through reading the over 500 comments, and lots of first-time viewers and subs, so that's great. Not so great, some of the negative comments grrrr
Haha don't worry about the negative ones, I certainly don't, the more people that watch your video's the more crazies fly in. I have so many amazing people watching and commenting that it is still worth the odd negative comment.
@MikeHolton that's true, you have us 😋🥰
@@fionacrouch1732 Exactly! 😃🥰
What a beautiful result Mike. A bit of a challenge early on and not sure I’m at that level yet but certainly something to aspire to.
Thanks Mike, it was more a case of keeping going as opposed to talent, I just hoped it would be in there somewhere 😀
Turned out great! Retiring and getting a lathe, can't wait to get started!
That is great news, join some of the groups on Facebook, they are a great source of help and support.

Fantastic little creation.
Many thanks Peter 😃
Really nice outcome for a first turn of a burl like that!
Thanks 👍, for a while there I did not think I would have anything to show for my efforts 😂
That was an especially gnarly piece of wood, Mike. It looked like something found in an Egyptian tomb. Your determination paid off as you transformed it into something beautiful. Very well done!
Thanks very much 😃, you're right, at the start it looked pretty bad and it was, we had to go way deep to find something nice.
I love the bowl I wasn’t sure of who it would turn out, but it is beautiful!!!
Thanks so much, I was not sure how it would turn out for a good while :D
Interesting to watch and a very interesting outcome also.
Thanks Rory 😀
