Woodturning - I've Never Made Anything Like This!
I was asked to make two cake stands by a colleague from my full-time job, she had many ideas but left me down to the final design. This was a bit of an experiment for me, as I wanted to try something I hadn't before by combining wood and epoxy in a river table style. The wood I chose was Yew, mainly for its unique wavy edges and bold colour.
The piece has been sanded to 10000 grit and finished with various food safe oils and wax.
The piece is approximately 23 x 12 cm.
Let me know what you think, and if you've got any ideas for the second cake stand!

Disclaimer:
My videos are for entertainment purposes only. Some of my techniques might not be the "best" or safest, so when using any tool or machinery always read and understand safety/manufacturers guidelines first.
And Yes, I'm aware that wearing gloves while woodturning is considered an unsafe practice. The gloves I wear are tight-fitting and don’t have any loose threads. I wear them for the protection of my skin. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however I am still very conscious of the potential danger and I do not touch any spinning parts of the lathe. DO NOT copy my actions if you feel unsafe doing so.

Oh that was a cake stand that's cool you get a hell of a job that is awesome
Stunningly, gorgeously, mind blowing beautiful Harry...you've done it again ol chum, grand slam out of the park home-run m8!
Thank you very much, Drew! I really appreciate the comment. What would you like to see from the second one? 😄
@@HarrySmithWoodturning maybe clear epoxy with different color exotic woods, that would look amazing!
…with a matching base!!! Oxox
As an artist myself, using different types (colors) of wood offer may a more mosaic visual interchange, which many humans find pleasing.
Dude, that’s beautiful! Really well done.
Would look perfect in the middle of our dining table, love your work "arry. Cheers
I can‘t imagine how much time you spend in total for producing such a video… Planning the ‚product‘, planning all the production steps in detail, planning the recording settings, really ‚doing‘ it and all the post production of the video. And that all in addition to a full-time-job…! What a dedication to your projects! Thank you!
Love it Harry - Thanks for sharing 👍🏻
Beautiful, Harry!
Thank you very much Stacey! What would you like to see from the second cake stand? 😁👍
@@HarrySmithWoodturning i'll leave that up to you. I'm positive that whatever you make will be absolutely beautiful!

That is beautiful!!!
That is really beautiful. The resin color compliments the wood color nicely. I've never turned a resin piece like this; it's a bit too messy for me but might change my mind in the future.
Beautiful you have a great gift
Absolutely beautiful and totally creative! I absolutely love that! 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Thank you very much, Rennae! What would you like to see from the second cake stand?! 😄

Great looking piece Harry.
Thank you very much, Robert! What would you like to see from the second cake stand? 😄
Very nicely done. I bet she loved it. The idea that popped into my head w/b for you to do cut pieces of wood like they are triangles, but the 'outside edge is 'rounded', then take them and put 3, 5, 7 pieces with room for the epoxy in between to hold them together and then repeat what you did with this one. With triangle shapes they'd be like 'slice' shapes from the cake. just keep in mind the odd number of pieces is seen as 'more pleasing to the eye'. I don't know why that is, only that they were adamant about it when I was in school.
Good work!
Thank you very much! What would you like to see from the second one? 😄

Классная работа!
Very nice, love the colour of the yes. The little tart was cute. But, Harry, why make the video so fast? My old eyes could not keep up! For the next one, same shape, same colours, but a bit taller (or shorter). 🧁
Que hermosura!!!!! 👏👏👏💖💖💖🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷
The pie looks amazing 😂
SOoo beautiful, when you mixed the resin I thought rose petals and turkish delight. The finished stand is…..😮😮😮
I have watched several of your videos. It is amazing the final result you get. How often during your turnings do you change the plan because what you started out doing wasn't going to work?
Cool 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you! What would you like to see from the second cake stand? 😄
Wow! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Where do you get that centering guide?
I’m a tree hugger and hate to see even one cut down without a Good reason, but in your hands with your creativity they become a work of Art… Thank you for sharing… namaste
I feel the same, and I have been a turner for years. I only used sourced wood that has fallen or was sick. They make the most beautiful pieces!
I like your turnings and wondering where you get the coins you put in the bottom of your turnings ?
Very nice! who made the mediallions for you?

@@HarrySmithWoodturning I don't know. something interesting
Apologies for the noddy question: how do you make the resin?
Hi where do you buy your signature tokens from, been looking everywhere...?
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you very much, Umberto! What would you like to see from the second cake stand! 😄
What is that spray?oil or glou?
Why worry about finishing with food safe oils and wax on a piece of Yew, which is not considered food safe? ;) It does look great though, I love yew, but always wonder what to do with it because it is not food-safe. So most ends up as candleholders.
Hi Harry , super 👍 , i never work with Epozit My next Projekt From german. Herbert 💪
Thank you very much, Herbert! Good luck with your epoxy project. What would you like to see from the second cake stand?! 😄
