Woodturning - You Won't Believe What You Can Do With Firewood!

2021 ж. 16 Қар.

I wanted to try this finishing technique, so I found a piece of firewood that looked like it would have some interesting grain and got turning. Unfortunately the grain wasn't as nice as I thought it would be and as it was my first time trying this finish the gold didn't standout as much as I wanted it to.
Still, I am really pleased with the results as it reminds me of a worn draught pump handle, especially because of the small exposed ring of wood at the top. Weirdly this is one of those pieces I really love because of its imperfections.... even the natural crack in the Ash that took in some of the gold, and the two larger cracks at the bottom, it all adds to the character of the piece.
I will be trying this finish again soon, hopefully with a bolder result.
Let me know what you think 😁

Disclaimer:
My videos are for entertainment purposes only. I am still relatively new to woodturning and some of my techniques might not be the "best" or safest. When using any tools or machinery always read and understand safety/manufacturers guidelines.
Yes, I'm aware that wearing gloves while woodturning is considered an unsafe practise. The gloves I wear are tight fitting and don’t have any loose threads. I wear them for the protection of my skin. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however I am still very conscious of the potential danger and I do not touch any spinning parts of the lathe. DO NOT do anything you don’t feel comfortable doing.

  • "You won't believe what you can do with firewood"?? Every wood turner seeing that title knows exactly what they can do with firewood... sort through it and squirrel away all the pieces with a nice grain. You go out to split it and, after several long gaps of silence comes the immortal phrase "What the hell are you doing out there? I thought you were splitting wood!". A phrase every wood turner is so familiar with. There are so many pieces you just can't burn.

I almost dare not say this because there will be loads of "I know better" comments .. but ... if the machine just happens to grab the very tip of one finger of those gloves ... your whole hand will go in, and 3/4 hp won't stop or slow down. I know it's a debate, gloves or not? I personally, would not wear gloves. Just want you to be safe.

    @black5f@black5f2 жыл бұрын
    • Thanks you black5f for your comment and your opinion which is noted. I take H&S extremely seriously, I have always worn gloves, it is a subject that is regularly raised in here, I always cover in the description field and disclaimer. It works for me but I do not promote their use to others, it is very much a personal choice. 👍😃

      @HarrySmithShorts@HarrySmithShorts2 жыл бұрын
    • @@HarrySmithShorts Hi Harry. It is a personal choice ... completely agree. I'll tell you what happened to me. The gloves were a bit old and there was a tiny tiny bit of thread that came loose on the end of a finger which I didn't notice. A lot of these gloves have kevlar threads in them for cut resistance, like silk but really strong. I went to the pillar drill with the gloves still on, dextrous gloves and well fitting etc, the drill caught hold of the thread and pulled my finger in. I managed to pull back with all my might ... but the glove wouldn't release off my hand and the very tip of the finger was forced against the drill. By the time I'd switched the drill off and it stopped, the end of the glove was smoking from friction, really quickly and I had a nasty burn ... could have been a lot worse. My comment is in no way critical, but that's the back storey. Love the gold and the "imperfections" and this does actually look like you made a bottle opener from a pump handle! Very creative and inspiration to us all.

    • Hi David thanks for watching 👀 and your comment. I have just posted my 60th video so plenty to catch up on.....😃👍 I have so many comments on the subject of commentaries. Its a 50/50 split for and against. The professionals find it patronising and the new to wood turning ask for it. I therefore try to show techniques and let the wood do the talking. I like to answer questions as much as I can! Happy New Year 🎉🎉🎉

    @rhajitpoltin3894@rhajitpoltin3894 Жыл бұрын
    • Wearing gloves is dangerous, I go from personal experience with and without gloves. Wearing gloves makes it way easier to absorb the shock but I have had a couple close calls where I have almost had a finger sucked inbetween the rest and piece of wood.
