60 Hogs Down | Feral Hog Eradication with the Armasight Zeus Pro Thermal Scope

A farmer in Central Texas continues the good fight against destructive feral hogs. Armed with a Sig 716 AR-10 and an Armasight Zeus Pro 640 50mm thermal scope he takes down massive numbers of hogs, but the fight is far from over.
** Why Do We Hunt Hogs? **
Feral hogs are a non-native and invasive species in Texas. Each year hogs cause millions of dollars in damage in the form of damaged crops, contaminated water supplies, broken equipment, transmission of disease and injury to livestock.
Feral hogs compete with native wildlife for resources and also prey directly on the eggs and young of ground nesting birds and will actively hunt small mammals, frogs, lizards and snakes.
Due to their intelligence, adaptability, and prolific breeding habits, traditional methods of hunting and trapping have been largely ineffective in reducing the feral hog population. The introduction of night vision and thermal optics has greatly increased landowners' ability to mitigate the destruction caused by feral hogs.
Feral swine are not considered game animals in Texas and may be hunted by any means or methods at any time of year.

  • We have a huge problem with hogs in Texas (they have even been seen on the streets of several mjor cities), but they are fun to shoot and eat. Since they are considered a pest, you can shoot them on sight, blow them up with tannerite and hunt them from helicopters (can't wait to try that). PS -The hog you shot humpin' that sow is the luckiest pig in the world. Died with a hard on, humpin' and a smile on his face - we should all be so lucky.

    • +Kamikaze Yamamoto "but they are fun to shoot" You have a defect in your brain if you think killing is fun. I understand the problem with hogs and culling them is necessary. I don't have an issue with that as long as it's humane. The disturbing thing about your comment is that you actually enjoy the slaughter. People like you and subsistence hunters like those in Alaska are two completely different mind sets. They kill so they can have food and they don't do it for fun. They also don't do it needlessly. You probably don't even realize how fucked in the head you really are because it's such a normal thing for you.

    • This has been tried on some species (releasing sterile male mosquitoes into the wild comes to mind), but since hogs roam, and there are millions of them, there is no way to target only them, or otherwise prevent other animals from eating the bait.

    • Lori Ann How would you do it humanely? Honest question. They have little or no predators. Contrary to popular belief they are smarter than your normal animals and are wary of traps. They have a keen sense of smell so shooters must be at a distance from them. There is a group in Georgia that has specialized in trapping entire sounders, but it is very expensive and time consuming since it requires human intervention to ensure the entire group is captured. Even then they have to dispatch them and the usual course of action is with rifles because the cost of hauling them to a slaughterhouse and exterminating them with a bolt through the skull is costly. Add to that the feral pigs may contaminate the slaughterhouse areas with diseases that would get into the meat supply. Rifles to dispatch them either in the open or after being trapped is the most viable solution to this agricultural disaster. Remember that those farmers feed not only Americans, but the world and those feral pigs currently contribute to billions of dollars of damage. If they were left on their own the threat of food scarcity to the US and the world would grow. What's really troubling is that they still continue to grow in population. They really need to be dispatched day and night in every region by more people. Instead of 2 or 3 per sounder there should be 20-30 dispatched. Now we could at a considerable cost relocate them to Venezuela or the middle east/Africa to feed the poor and starving.
