2001 will go down as one of the most impactful years for video games. Halo: Combat Evolved was a huge step for first-person shooters on consoles and helped establish the XBOX brand. Metal Gear Solid 2 pushed cinematic storytelling to all new heights; using the medium to enhance the narrative instead of detracting from it. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg because I could go on all-day listing landmark titles. However, I want to focus on one of my favourite games of that year and what is probably one of the most influential titles in the action genre. That game of course being Capcom’s very own “Devil May Cry”
For those who are unaware, The devil may cry games are a series of hack and slashes where the goal is to take down rooms of enemies while looking as stylish as possible. The main appeal for this series is its mechanical depth and over-the-top action, which was something that not many 3D games were providing at the time. Most of the discussion surrounding devil may cry is focused on later entries in the series, with the original game often being left out. This is a shame because Devil May Cry 1, while comparatively more simplistic, is a fulfilling experience in its own way and deserves to be recognized for what it managed to accomplish. So for today's video, we’re going to be doing just that and taking a deep dive into the mechanics and design of devil may cry in order to see what exactly made it such a revolutionary title.
How Devil May Cry DEFINED Action
Welcome to my Devil May Cry Analysis! Devil May Cry is one of the most popular action games and in this Devil May Cry Analysis, I'm going to be reviewing Devil May Cry 1. There will be story spoilers in this Devil May Cry Review for Devil May Cry 1 this is an in-depth Analysis of Devil May Cry. Devil May Cry in 2022 - Is it Good? is just my own opinion on Devil May Cry. If you disagree with me, that's okay. This Devil May Cry analysis is the start of my Devil May Cry Retrospective. Devil May Cry in 2022 - Is it Good? is the best video I've made. Devil May Cry HD is the current best way to play the original DMC 1. The Devil May Cry HD Collection has a few graphical hiccups but DMC 1 HD is a massive improvement over the original Devil May Cry 1. While this DMC 1 review isn't a Devil May Cry HD Collection review, it's the place to be if you want to see nam's compendium start his DMC retrospective

  • A fun fact that is almost never mentioned about DMC1 is that some enemies have resident-evil esque finishing animations if dante dies to them in a certain way. It brings the player into a cutscene of the monster killing dante in usually kinda grotesque way. It feels little jarring nowadays considering how overpowered dante is in the lore.

  • I still have a super-huge soft spot for this game because it has its own atmosphere, and even if it's not the amazing action-fest of later games, it set the groundwork and is still a very fun game in its own right. Being the closest to Resident Evil the series would ever be, it gives it an identity of its own besides just being "the stepping stone".

  • DMC1 has the best atmosphere and world design of all DMC games! The setting, combined with the great music, sets a perfect tone that was unfortunately lost in later entries to the franchise, that discarded the Resident Evil influence and tone for a more action one. Also, I actually DO play the DMC games for the story! DMC1 had a very decent story, better than some of the later additions to the franchise. In combination with DMC3 and DMC5, the story of the sons of Sparda is excellent, how a single tragedy viewed from different perspectives can lead to two completely opposite lifestyles and views of life! It's Shakespearean in my opinion. And DMC1 set the basis for most of the themes presented in later games. In DMC3, Dante needs to find a meaning in his life except from his need for revenge. Lady provides that for him, inspiring him to become mankind's protector against demons. But alas, he fails to save his brother. In DMC1, Dante finally gets his revenge for his mother's death, even finding a partner in Trish. But was still troubled by his failure to save his brother, this time having to kill him. Without his revenge to fuel him and provide meaning in his life, and believing himself to be his brother's killer and the last surviving member of his family, he becomes a darker character in DMC2. But upon finding others similar to him, Lucia in DMC2 and a new member of his family, his brother's son in DMC4, he finds his former, more positive self, having a new role, that of a mentor. Finally in DMC5, his brother is resurrected, they both come in terms, Nero finds his father and the family is united... sort of. All these wouldn't be possible without DMC1 setting the basis for all future ideas. I sincerely believe the story to be one of the best aspects of the DMC franchise!!!

  • If your new to the DMC franchise, you will be surprised about the mechanics of DMC1. It doesn't have auto or manual save and instead in every mission, you only have 3 revives. Once that runs out, you'll have to restart the mission. Kinda like Mario. Gameplay wise, it doesn't feel clunky and outdated in fact it's pretty satisfying for a game that was made in the early 2000s. Overall, it's a whole new experience if you haven't played yet.

  • Just finished DMC1 a few hours after this video came up. I had made a few attempts before, but I typically quit around the first Phantom Fight. I got past that, and then quickly finished the rest of the game. It helps that I went to play the other games in the series first, and my skills vastly Improved since then, but I'm proud I beat it. My only real criticisms, besides the age of the game, was that the camera was a pain in the ass in a few fights, and outside the final boss, the Sparda Sword was underwhelming. That's about it. It's funny that I became a big fan of DMC and Persona relatively recently, and Nam's now covered both. I wonder what new surprises lie in weight. Also, Air Raid. Air Raid is your friend.

Despite lacking in moveset compared to later entries, the game arguably utilises it's minimal moveset to the best effect compared to later games and also the enemy designs is the best in the series and arguably of all in the genre. The camera is a pain but it doesn't get too bad once you're used to it. Overall great review and this game is still really special and unique despite its age. Atmosphere, enemy designs and effective execution of its moveset still makes this game a classic to this day.

  • DMC 1 is my favorite game on the PS2 by far, and probably my top 3 games. The atmosphere, the action, graphics, I was mindblown. I never had seen a game like that before. Hell, 2001 is still my favorite year in gaming history and my life in particular, not to forget the gems that came out like Klonoa 2, Soul Reaver 2, Fatal Frame, Ico, Jak & Daxter. Replaying DMC 1 each year and still the sequels are there but never did anything for me. DMC 5, the latest, yeah it's good, but not for me. I prefer a gothic castle with Marionettes anyway. And Dante as a character has changed for the worse in my opinion. Went from a cool, down to earth guy to a clown. Yes DMC 1 still holds up for me. And I hope they don't do a remake of that one. Just leave it alone.

    @Casketkrusher_@Casketkrusher_2 жыл бұрын
    • Never got to the rest, but Ico and Fatal Frame are based. For all the jank and limitations in combat, you gotta keep things in perspective for DMC1... it's still deeper and more visceral and cooler than 99% of games that came after, even good games. Most action games don't even have a proper jump button or aerial combat, DMC1 was doing it all the way back in 2001 lol. Light years ahead in enemy design, so good DMC4 and 5 had to rip it off lmao (different directors). Just compare the combat and enemies here to your basic boring open world game or some random action-RPG, even the stuff I enjoy like Zelda, Yakuza, souls, Hellblade, Batman. No contest which is deeper, all this shit might as well be mindless button mashing in comparison. And we're talking about a jank 2001 game here with a camera more fucked than Resident Evil lol. The only games deeper are the heavy hitters in the genre like DMC3, Bayonetta, Ninja Gaiden--but that's only like 6-7 games in 2 decades lol. Incredible what they accomplished. If they remade this with all the cool mechanics from the later DMC games and fixed it up a bit--not saying they should but if--it would dump on all these modern action games, no question. Plus honestly, despite the improvements in core combat, the other DMC games regressed in basically everything else except for the story I guess (still not that good). Level designs, enemy designs and atmosphere are way inferior. Weaker art direction. Boss quality is wildly inconsistent (purple tumor lol). More backtracking which screws with the pacing, taken to an absurd extreme in DMC4--plus Nero is just so boring, how do you make a character with a SMALLER moveset than a 2001 game ffs lol? Even the music was worse until DMC5 basically lol.

      @ImWatchingYou69@ImWatchingYou692 жыл бұрын

  • Yeah, DMC 1 is still awesome. I recognize that later games are better, but this is the one I’m nostalgic for. Didn’t know difficulty was based on new game+ count, though; I made a whole new file on Normal because I thought taking the Easy Auto prompt permanently locked my old file on that difficulty. Yes, I would very much like a video on DMC 2. I remember being forgiving to it on my first run, only for my opinion to spur much closer to the general consensus on my second. Mainly because of what I consider an unwarranted bleakness: DMC 2 is that edgy middle schooler who’s just going through a phase and hasn’t earned the edge.

    @isenokami7810@isenokami78102 жыл бұрын
    • Your file is locked to easy mode if you start on it, if you beat the game on easy it doesn’t go up to normal or hard, it just restarts easy. Easy mode is quite different anyway, Fetishes, (one of the main fodder enemies later in the game) Frosts, and Shadows (which sucks as they’re one of the best enemies in the game) straight up don’t exist, (and I don’t mean they appear less often they’re just gone) and you’re forced to use automatic mode. At least they fixed easy in later games (except in 4 where you’re not allowed to use some moves or the entirety of Royal Guard on automatic).

      @assassinonprozac@assassinonprozac2 жыл бұрын
    • @@assassinonprozac Yeah, got my first taste of some of those enemies on that second file (except for Shadows, I think, which are in one of the early secret missions regardless of difficulty; quite the rude awakening trying that on the easy mode file and having no idea what to do). Suffice to say, DMC 1 was already my favorite game in the series for nostalgia factor, and for the ResE style interconnected setting of Mallet Island, but doing that second run on Normal greatly enhanced my experience.

      @isenokami7810@isenokami78102 жыл бұрын
    • I would chock a lot of DMC2's edginess to the fact that it just wasn't written. A decent portion of Dante's dialogue, whenever it is that he got to speak, are actually quips that are in line with his DMC1 personality. Plus the reveal of his coin shtick actually having 2 heads showing that whatever request was made of him that was decided on the coin flip meant that he was always going to do it. He was just fucking with Lucia and Matier. The game is so very clearly unfinished with incredibly bland level designs and unbalanced mechanics that it's seriously amazing that the franchise even got to live past the second installment, and I'm thankful for it.

      @Kaliospectre@Kaliospectre2 жыл бұрын
    • @@Kaliospectre Oh boy, DMC2. I remember being kind to it on my first playthrough, but having my opinion drop through the floor on my second, purely from my own experience. The story sucked on both runs. Not only did it feel unfinished, it just straight up failed to explain itself. Aside from Matier’s talk after the first mission (or second as Lucia), the game doesn’t really do exposition; doesn’t sound so bad until you realize most characters have the plot details going in while the player is left in the dark. What really got to me on that second playthrough, though, was how depressing it feels to go through Vie de Marli. The music, the empty streets, the very atmosphere belongs in some post-apocalyptic setting as you lament what once was. But…that’s nowhere close to what DMC2 is. I’m left seeing it as that edgy middle schooler going through a phase; it does nothing to actually earn it’s depressing atmosphere.

  • Mildly unpopular opinion here: I don't think DMC1 should have had the mission structure. Just picture it in your mind, a hypothetical version of DMC1 where there are no mission start/end screens. And if your first instinct is "I get fewer red orbs" double the orb drops you get everywhere else to make up the difference. Doesn't this hypothetical version of DMC1 flow much better? I think it would absolutely nail the feel of an action-packed Resident Evil game. Exploring Mallet Island to find items to open up more parts of the castle, returning to older areas, a feeling of dread and excitement when you see a SpaceTime God statue to use as your save point, because you know a boss or other hard fight is on the other side. The mission structure does nothing but make an already dated game more clunky. DMC5 makes the most of its mission structure by setting each one in new areas with level design based around moving forward. DMC1, however, is a repurposed Resident Evil 4 pitch, so the levels make use of backtracking and landmarks. The mission structure just doesn't play to the strengths of Mallet Island. And I could go on another short rant about how the mission structure causes Secret Missions to disappear, to me that just demonstrates the clashing design in a nutshell. In this hypothetical world, DMC3 could have followed suit. Did you know that in DMC3 mission 19, you can backtrack all the way back to Dante's shop after opening the door to Arkham? Once again they built an interconnected Spencer Mansion, then broke it up into missions afterward.

  • recently played DMC 1 for the first time. DMC 3 is definitely still a fav, But DMC1 holds up great. The combat is still fun, The character models are ok even after this long time, Boss battles are satisfying as hell. Sad that DMC 2 instead of improving on it, did absolutely the opposite. But Happy, that DMC 3 took DMC1 and pretty much made what DMC is known for nowadays, Full on Stylish Hack And Slash.

    • there were always tough as nails challenging games, for every console generation, it's just that people never play them, never hear of them, or they don't get popular. I will to my last breath maintain that the original US release of DMC3 is probably one of the most challenging games period. to me souls games perceived difficulty and challenge comes from the use of traps, ambushes and surprises. the exploration boils down to trial and error with those mostly, the bosses though are what are the actual challenge in a souls game. DMC3 though, barring some bullshit enemies (enigma, bloodgoyles, soul eaters) is largely a matter of pure challenge based on skill. you're given the basic tools to use and with mastery you can beat any fight thrown at you with just rebellion, ebony and ivory and good understanding of s from jumping and dodging. no surprises, no gimmicks, no bullshit, just you and a room full of demons and your skill determines victory.

    • Soulsborne kids don't really play much, many of them have never even looked in these games' direction. Then they'd realize how shallow and crappy souls combat actually is lol. I love souls, but not for its combat. Despite aging like milk, DMC1 is STILL less jank and buggy than any souls game and also has deeper combat, cooler weapons, better enemy design, and oh it actually explains itself instead of relying on cryptic BS for its difficulty lol. Nevermind NG, which has aged a lot better.

  • Beat this game for the first time yesterday. I plan on beating all of the games in a row because I never had the chance to play them. I must say it was one of the most frustrating gaming experiences I've ever forced myself through. Even though I only died a handful of times it was extremely annoying to play half the time and just ok the other half of the time. I have always held games to the same level of scrutiny no matter when they are released. For example I played the original Doom for the first time in 2018 and loved it. The weapons and enemy variety mixed with the exploration makes it fairly similar in feel to Devil May Cry actually now that I think about the gameplay loop of both games. Even the emphasis on increasing the difficulty to make things more interesting as you master the games' systems. I've started DMC2 and I'm having quite a bit of fun actually. The levels are more open so the camera is less of an issue the combat feels more refined with the addition of a proper dodge button, and the enemies feel much more threatening, making them more fun to fight. The beginning of the game even held on to that resident evil feel as you are exploring a foggy village. I'm hoping to love this series, but the first entry is something I doubt I'll ever play again. If the games continue to be as wacky as beating possessed military vehicles with a sword, then I have high hopes for the series.

  • As someone who played dmc5, then went back to play the older games and have just beaten 1 I did not expect it to be so awesome, everyone said that it was a solid game but damn it well exceeded my expectations. The combat, while comparatively simple to 5 was still incredibly fun and satisfying and the atmosphere and feel of the game was way better than 5, and while there’s very little actual diversity in the soundtrack it’s implemented so well and suits the game so much that I can’t help but love it

    • DMC1 is fantastic, a top 10 PS2 game of all time for sure, maybe Top 5. It just sucks that Capcom used the Japanese PS2 version of the game for the HD collection which is super easy compared to the North American PS2 version since in the JP version enemies take 20% less damage to kill and deal 20% less damage to Dante.

  • DMD on DMC 1 is actually easier than you'd think. The enemies are actually weaker than Hard and Normal but if you don't finish them off in the time limit the will DT. Even then, the DT enemies can still be critically killed in some cases like the slicing the Blades' belly or blasting E&I on a shadow when you stand on its spear. The only real pain of DMD is some of the bosses like Griffon 3 and Nightmare.

    @dazitmane8905@dazitmane89052 жыл бұрын
    • I don’t think I ever saw an enemy DT in my first DMC1 DMD play trough now that I think about it. Which is funny because in 3 it felt like every enemy I encountered DT’d. Also yeah I agree, DMC1’s DMD is piss easy outside of the boss fights ( I have no idea how people can say 1 is harder than 3). Also, also bring back critical hits and the enemies fatality moves, I know it’s something leftover from Resident Evil but it was really cool.

      @assassinonprozac@assassinonprozac2 жыл бұрын
    • @@assassinonprozac for a first timer 1 was equally as hard as 3(original American PS2 version) but on DMD, 3 is painful even with maxed out abilities. 1 is doable on a fresh run and even easier with a maxed Dante. Agreed on Critical Hits, it's always a sweet feeling to knock a Blade on its back and slice it's belly to finish them off and Hit a Sin Scissors on its Scissors and blast it in the face with a shotgun to instantly kill it.
