To this day, Devil may cry 3 is one of the greatest comeback stories in gaming history. Not only did it fix the colossal missteps of its predecessor, but it also introduced plenty of new ideas that pushed the series forwards. With the most notable being the multitude of different combat styles, on-the-fly weapon switching, and the full realization of jump cancelling. All of these mechanics were wrapped up in the reworked combat ranking system that encouraged players to always be pushing their skills to their limits. Devil may cry 3 proved that the series was more than just a one-hit-wonder and is what I consider to be one of the greatest action games on the PlayStation 2. Because of DMC 3’s massive success, fans had high expectations for the next game. Not just because they were clamouring for more of what the last game provided, but because this would mark Devil May Cry’s debut on the 7th generation of consoles, which was a huge deal. Of course, this meant that we would see a bump in graphical quality, but the new hardware would allow the developers to do things that weren’t possible back on the ps2 gameplay-wise. The excitement surrounding DMC 4 was through the roof and in early 2008 we finally got our hands on it.
Devil May Cry 4 - The Unfinished DMC Game
Welcome to my Devil May Cry 4 Analysis! Devil May Cry 4 is one of the most popular action games and in this Devil May Cry 4 Analysis 14 Years Later, I'm going to be reviewing Devil May Cry 4 - The Unfinished DMC Game. There will be story spoilers in this Devil May Cry 4 Review for Devil May Cry 4 this is an in-depth Analysis of Devil May Cry 4. Devil May Cry 4 - The Unfinished DMC Game is just my own opinion on Devil May Cry 4. If you disagree with me, that's okay. This Devil May Cry 4 analysis is the start of my Devil May Cry 4 Retrospective. Devil May Cry 4 - 14 Years Later is the best video I've made. Devil May Cry HD is the current best way to play the original DMC 1. The Devil May Cry HD Collection has a few graphical hiccups but DMC 4 HD is a massive improvement over the original Devil May Cry 4. While this DMC 4 review isn't a Devil May Cry HD Collection review, it's the place to be if you want to see nam's compendium start his DMC retrospective. This Devil May Cry 4 Analysis contains footage of Devil May Cry 4 Vergil
DMC 4 Vergil is a great character to play as and Devil May Cry 4 Vergil is iconic in DMC 4 Vergil

  • Nero's arc is going from a hot head with a dark secret (his demon arm) and no direction in life until his 2nd fight with Dante, where he chills out a bit, to the end where accepts the fact that his arm isn't a curse, but rather a weapon to save people with. It's a story of self-acceptance & being accepted by others despite flaws (Credo defending Nero from Sanctus & asking Dante to save his sister AND Nero, Dante entrusting Yamato to Nero, Kyrie loving Nero b/c of who he is at his core despite his demon blood). It's a good story, but it just kinda... stops once you get to the Dante segment for a bit until the end. It needed more room to breathe. DMCV did a much better job with Nero.

Lady has far more moves than that, but the AI is completely unable to pressure her because it's made for Dante and Nero, both of whom are primarily melee combatants and relatively weak at range, and yes, even including Dante in Gunslinger in that statement. And your pattern isn't even needed. Lady can kill enemies from clear across a given arena quickly and efficiently and still come out of it with a high combo score because of the way she's designed.

Look at Dante's weapons, notice how in DMC3 and DMC5 the Itsuno directed games, they all come from the bosses he kills. Yet Gilgamesh, Lucifer, and Pandora are nowhere to be seen as bosses or even enemies. DMC4 artbook also has several moments where they blatantly show you cut content, including Nero's devil trigger, Sin DT for Dante which both made it in 5, an entire cut section for Nero with levels inside the Savior statue. Trust me when you beat it the game will still feel like a solid 7/10, but it could've been a 9/10 or 10/10 with a 2009 release date.

  • Regarding your comment on Vergils "concentration (motivation) meter" honestly it reads less like a gimmick to me and more as a way to incentivize people to play more in line with Vergils character, while there's really nothing stopping you from mashing buttons and going full on monkey brain neuron activation mode on the controller you're really locking yourself out of Vergils true potential and fun by doing so, this isn't wacky woohoo pizzaman time, this is virgin time, and conducting yourself accordingly by fighting as a measured response to enemies, not getting hit (cause damage is lame and Vergil ain't lame) and keeping yourself superior in the face of your enemies will lead you to CRUSH with him, there's always a debate to be had between games but their continued expansion on Vergils moveset in 4 and 5 in the face of 3 has made for fantastic growth and development imo.

  • DMC4 (and to a lesser extent 5) suffers from a lot of the context being put in prequel manga. In this case, it's especially Nero's character arc and his relationship with Credo and Kyrie. I'm sure the game would have showed it more if they had more dev time, but the multimedia storytelling also carried over to 5, so I think some of this story splitting was done on purpose. DMC as a series has some of the best character writing I've ever seen, but I can only give it that label after reading all the manga because the games aren't enough.

    @Valvadrix@Valvadrix Жыл бұрын
    • I feel the same and it pisses me off because the script and writing of 3 was pretty well done. The only reason I can find is Capcom thinking that DMC main audience only cared about the combat and gamepley and didn't wanted to bore the public.

  • 29:15 Uh no, that's not at all what it only does -Increases judgement cut size and damage -Enables access to JCE -Increases the range of all Yamato attacks -Increases the amount of hits each Force Edge attack does -Adds a 3rd level charge to all of his beowulf attacks Concentration factors into all of these Edit: Also, concentration AND DT are both increased when Vergil sheathes his weapon after a combo move and with taunts, and decreases if you run around, miss attacks, or get hit. You essentially have to actually be Vergil to get concentration up, that's the entire point of the mechanic. It's not this weird "tacked on" aspect to the character, everything he does factors into this. How you move, how you attack and defend, and how you act. And to your point at 29:49, again, that's the entire point. His entire character is a power fantasy, and his playstyle is high risk high reward. His only defensive move is his trick mechanic, and the basic defensive options. Dante has trickster, double jumps, royal guard, and the basic dodge mechanics. Vergil has trick to target, trick away in DT, and side rolling. His defense, honestly, sucks, but is balanced by his INTENSIVE offense. You get hit and your concentration goes down, you can't just spam JCE and win the game. You want DT? You gotta let Vergils animations play out, let his taunts play out, don't miss any attacks, etc.

  • If DMC4 had a bit more time to flesh out via development, it would've been pushed from early 2008 to mid 2009. Just imagine if Dante gets more cool Devil Arms, new demonic bosses(especially the scrapped ones before DMC5 did the same), Nero to have new defensive and offensive elemental abilities after defeating bosses which will change his demon arm/DT to different colors depending on the ability equipped a la DMC1 and DMC3(like orange with Berial, dark blue with Bael, green with Echidna, etc), the game to have more hilarious and cheesy moments, and the story to feel satisfying. It would give the developers and cast/stuntmen/mocap actors an extended amount of creative liberties and comedic freedom like during DMC4's troubled development but taken to an 11. I doubt that'll be the case because this was back when Capcom was attempting to pander towards the western youth compared to their games having a favorable eastern flair to it all.

    • Time wasn't the main issue. 4 had the longest dev time of any DMC game at that point. The big issue was the budget, which was about the same as DMC3's, despite being an HD game and being on two consoles (one of which wasn't planned initially). If it was truly rushed, then the little content there was probably wouldn't have been as polished as it was (and it's incredibly polished. You don't make one of the greatest combat ever if you're on a tight schedule). If it wasn't rushed (assuming that it was) they still wouldn't have had the budget to add more unique levels, more weapons and bosses.

While yes, fighting them as Nero is easier due to his grab, Dante can deal with them just fine as well, albeit you do have to work more to do so. • People don't give the story of DMC4 enough credit. Yes, it's not as good as DMC3, but it's not a farce like a lot of people act like it is. And this video doesn't give the writing credit with Nero. He's got a full arc, and quite a bit of internal conflict. He thinks he's a freak because of his arm, and he knows that he'll be ostracized if people know about it (since it's obviously demonic in nature). Makes his self-actualization directly tied to The Order being revealed to be demons, themselves, and Nero learning to navigate his way through lies in order to learn, essentially, what it means to be human. Ironic, considering that he's the grandson of Sparda and son of Vergil, which is also something that Dante alludes to without it being too obvious. After all, the Yamato's "gotta stay in the family," and then he let's Nero keep it after his test of pretending to forget to collect it to see if Nero was willing to part with it. It's a great mentor-student dynamic they have going on, which is even reflected in Nero's outfit with the color design. Nero is a great protagonist. Like everything else, though, he would've been better if given more time. I am so happy that DMC5 exists to show the quality that DMC4 lacked due to Capcom's stupidity with the time cuts.

    @Poet482@Poet482 Жыл бұрын
    • But on the other hand imo I feel like that’s all there is to the story. Nero’s development and foreshadowed connection to the family but not much else. Kyrie for example who is the main driving force for Nero has literally no development or involvement in the entire story except for being the damsel and it’s kinda sad. Then the oxymoron and walking pile of irony that is the Order just makes no sense..they worship the demonic power of Sparda in a holy light just to turn themselves into demons and open the hell gates so that they can fight those demons…with their demons..? To mimic the actions of Sparda I’m guessing for literally no reason at all. Like DMC2 had a story that made more sense then DMC4

  • As someone who went through the whole DMC series (except for 2 for obvious reasons) chronologically for the first time over the past few months, it might be weird but DMC4 might be my favorite one because playing as Nero finally made me kinda get the DMC combat for the first time. Being able to pull enemies towards Nero or Nero towards enemies is such a welcome mechanic for someone who isn't that great at DMC in general cause it makes basic combos so much easier. The devil bringer grapples are also just really satisfying and made me wanna see all the possible animations the game had to offer. While I like the devil breaker in DMC5 quite a bit too, nothing gets close to the powertrip that is grappling in DMC4.

  • Concentration Meter for Vergil increases the range and power of all his attacks, not just JC. Meter decreases not only from taking damage, but also running and jumping, also increases by just standing near enemies without taking damage, by sheathing the Yamato and doing taunts. For me, it's a pretty limiting mechanic, hindering comebacks and style when you get damaged, Super Vergil is a lot more fun for a casual play since he's always "motivated". I'm ok with taking damage, trading hits (it feels natural and even hype, esp vs bosses), I love to try new stuff, play more casually instead of tryhard, and having low concentration because of this feels limiting. Other chars don't have such limits. On the other hand, if you're already no-hit combo mad master, it won't matter much to you do you have concentration low or high. Also the way his teleports are changed from 3 are bad (though it destroys bosses lol), and while you have amazing DT teleports instead of rolls, it's limited to DT. Also he lost some of his great moveset like Force Edge combo A or Rising Sun. Also for some reason sheathing the Yamato gives style no more. Still, a very fun addition to the game.

Imagine a opponent is in front of you and when Red Queen would connect to the opponents body thats where the Max Act is. You will be able to consistently get a charge regardless of if you get a Max Act or not as long as you have that visual idea in mind then build the muscle memory from there.

  • In my head canon the 3 protags practiced these 3 styles of Historical Fencing. Dante = Liechtenauer/German Fencing, created by Johannes Liechtenauer this style focuses on Aggression, Momentum and footwork, often this style uses Attacks as offensive and defensive strikes using this to instantly counterattack the enemy, it also looks flashy with most moves being cuts and slashes. Interesting Note: this style was supposedly originally suppose to be a secret so instead of using a traditional Note or Manual for memorization Liechtenauer instead gave his student (or at least people who claim to be) a Poem called the Zettel (the Recital) containing many of his teachings and philosophies. (So theoretically Dante can create a Rock song in his head based on the Zettel, kind of puts an interesting spin on the Nevan scene from DMC3) Vergil = Yagyu Shinkagen Ryu, a more cautious, quick and footwork focused variant of Kenjutsu, unlike most Kenjutsu styles often compared to Liechtenauer on their aggression, this style also focuses on adaptation. Interesting note: this style of Kenjutsu was founded by Kamiizumi Nobutsuna a Buddist Monk (so ironically the Power Hungry and Social Darwinist Vergil practices the style of a more pacifistic person and also ironically promotes personal growth and change.) Nero = Polish Style Saber Fencing, an Aggressive, Fast and frenetic form of Saber fencing, the Polish style relys on a whole lot of footwork and leans, the style was used by the famous Winged Hussars and nicknamed "the Hellish Cut" by a German Master. Interesting note: the style is mostly lost, very little about it survived the turbulent history of Poland, so people who practice it today reconstruct it based on whats left and other styles like German, Turkic, Turkish and Hungarian, its also noted as seemingly not protecting the hands much. (Its kind of odd with how many coincidences this one snaged with Nero, the Winged Hussars, the Hands bit, the leaning but if true than Nero is the most dedicated one out of the 3 as he studied an almost lost art and mastered it though to be fair to the 2 especially Dante's, ironically as Liechtenauer is mostly learned through his student's manuals especially Mayer so only being relevant only for the 200 years of its existence until today while Yagyu Shinkagen Ryu has mostly remained relevant up to today, those are very difficult to research and learn too)

But for what it's worth, it really got me interested in the rest of the series, so I guess from that viewpoint it was successful in its attempt to bring new folks in. And I don't know if its just my nostalgia speaking, but I've always remembered this game fondly, in particular the bosses; Belial was a fun romp (and the lucifer demonstration is just so perfectly cheesy, I love it), I really liked the anglerfish inspired frogs, and squashing the science nerd like a literal bug was really cathartic.

  • Despite being a semi-latecomer to entirety of the series (I played DMC1 at launch, DmC DINO at launch, and nothing else until DMC5), I ultimately played all the games in backward order after 5 and REALLY enjoyed DMC4. I didn't know about the drama, the public reception, the troubled development. I just found a game that felt great to play, even though DMC5 was technically superior in every way. I also played DMC3 after 4. I'm actually playing it right now; I accidentally saved over my Dante save with my Vergil save, so I'm replaying it as Dante, something I was oddly excited to do. This game holds up incredibly well, despite all the time. But switching back and forth between 3 and 4, I can really appreciate how much 4 added to the series, starting with the camera (3's SM12 with Vergil nearly broke me), and culminating in LDK, which is the best kind of chaos. Proud Souls were... Meh. I could understand why they were there; they wanted a way for skill points to transfer between multiple characters without affecting Blorbs and Porbs. But in a game that forces you to collect Red Orbs to maximize mission ranking (and was MUCH more strict about it than 3), making those orbs completely useless by basically mid-game was a terrible idea. But overall, I think I'm one of those rare fools who came to DMC4 very late and still appreciate it deeply amidst its esteemed kin.

As it is, it’s still DMC at its core, and pretty good DMC at that. Especially, Nero and his Devil Bringer is really fun to play around with. If I had one complaint, it’s that, though Dante and Nero are both fun to play as, their differences are so simultaneously subtle yet major that there’s a bit of a learning period whenever you switch off.
