Time to dig into one of Platinum’s strangest video games, their collaboration with Kojima Productions on Metal Gear Rising.
Special thanks to Millz, who gave me footage from one of inprogress Combo MAD videos for the visuals and was a great source of insight on the gameplay.
Go check out his channel for DMC/MGR style videos and tips on advanced tech.

  • Fuck me, as I'm re-watching it after the upload to check that KZhead didn't mess anything up, I only just now realized my slip up of saying "Lightning Speed Action" and not "Lightning Bolt Action" at 5:32. I went over that edit about 5 times and some how never noticed that!

  • The way I've interpreted the Jack the Ripper storyline is that Raiden, in his adult career as a soldier, has always had a level of bloodthirst and desire to kill. However, modern ideals and his own desire to deliver justice caused him to reject that bloodthirst, with him coping with it by seeing himself as a sort of "warrior of justice," where he unconsciously uses his ideals as an excuse to fight. Just before the Monsoon fight the Winds of Destruction project theoretical thoughts to Raiden in order to basically tear apart this excuse and leave him with the truth that he's not fighting for justice, but because he likes fighting. Raiden's character arc during the talk with Monsoon is him admitting that yeah, he likes to kill... but that doesn't mean he has to be evil. He realizes that he's totally bloodthirsty, but he can still deliver justice while satisfying that urge, he just needs to channel it in the right direction. In other words, he takes an unhealthy desire and puts it to work towards a healthy goal. As one shitpost I saw put it: Raiden: Okay, yeah, I admit it. I like killing the weak. Monsoon: Good, you admit you're a killer then. Raiden: Yeah, and there's no one weaker than those who prey on people who can't defend themselves! Monsoon: Wait no that's cheating.

    • In the sense of the plot of the story, yeah but it's also a nice parallel to the meta of gameplay. Mgs is very story driven and is a game jam packed with substance like a lot of games today and up until monsoon the game itself also acts like it. Until raiden realises parallel to the game that mgr is an action game, it's video game ass video game. Sam has already knows it and lives by it at the start of the game "you deny your weapon its purpose, it yearns to bathe in the blood of your enemies but you hold it back " is like "you're not playing games simply as a form of entertainment anymore, you act like the games you play are supposed to have deep seeded meanings when games at their core are supposed to be fun and a disconnect from the seriousness of life"

  • Small detail I noticed about the soundtrack: When you fight Sam and you make him loose his sword the vocals are turned off, leaving only the instrumental version during that phase. During the fight with Armstrong, when YOU loose your sword the same thing happens. The vocals go away, leaving only the instrumental and then the lyrics come back when you retrieve your sword. Except it's not YOUR sword, it's Sam's sword. So the exact same thing happens in both fights, the only difference being the person wielding the murasama. It's such a dumb detail but it's sooo dope.

  • I've always believed that there was some hashtag deep subtext concerning Sam's 'passing of the torch' with his sword to Raiden. They kind of have reverse character arcs where at the beginning of the game, Raiden has a bunch of rules on when it is isn't ok to draw your sword whereas Sam is just looking for the next good fight and over the course of the story Sam decides to die for a cause and Raiden begins seeking out conflicts on his own terms. This is reinforced through gameplay as you go through NG+. The Muramasa is a straight upgrade to the range and damage of the lightning blade that Raiden starts the story with, which encourages the player to use Sam's weapon instead of Raiden's original 'tool of justice' on subsequent playthroughs. In this NG+ playthrough, player will also most likely be skipping all cutscenes and rushing through story beats in order to get to the next fight arena - perfectly embodying Sam's philosphy without even realizing it.

  • "what else is there really to say?" For starters, i would include at least a mention of how fucking well-directed the cutscenes are. The cinematography is so deliberate and powerful. Not exactly very subtle, but if you enjoy back-to-back impact shots, and shots with deliberate meaning to their staging, then MGR:R is a real powerhouse. If you don't understand what i mean, then how about this example: After Raiden has ripped out and crushed armstrong's heart, he stands amidst the flames and rubble of what he has done, with the senator laid flat on the ground, fitting perfectly within raiden's shadow. Where the story isn't very focused, and the first one-and-a-half chapters are hard to tie together, or to the prologue, i think the power of the presentation engages enough, just in the moment, for the shortcomings to be ignored. Also, one of the reasons it didn't review that well at launch: the tutorial sucked, and i think most people who got competent at the game sought out outside information about how the parry worked. I bet the metacritic score would be bumped up by a handful of points if the VR tutorial about parrying couldn't be bypassed just by attacking, and/or if Boris didn't explain a completely wrong way to parry, early in chapter 1. (go check out random people playing the game on twitch, and see if they know how to parry. First-timers will get absolutely wrecked by monsoon, because they don't have the knowledge of parrying.)

    @haldir108@haldir1084 жыл бұрын

If you have 5x as much health as you are supposed to, yeah, i absolutely believe people will kill it in 1-2 tries. That is not to say i respect that way of playing though. • At 34:06, about him having to relish in the killing. I think it makes perfect sense, and your initial fight with Sam at the beginning of the game sets this arc into motion. Sam observes that Raiden is denying his sword its purpose. And that he’s using it as a “tool” rather than a weapon. He’s holding back, and that’s why he was having difficulty facing someone like Sam, who embraces his bloodlust. He doesn’t give a fuck. No second guessing, no hesitation. That was Sam’s, Monsoon’s, Sundowner’s, etc. leg up on Raiden. Him coming to terms with his inherent desire WAS the resolution to that arc, imo. Sure you get the ripper mechanic right after his little self-revelation, but also, his need for violence is internalized following those events. This allows for him to just fight normally, without any mental barriers slowing him down. To me, that moment with monsoon tied it up neatly.

  • 33:37 I think they were trying to point out the duality of "doing the right thing". Sometimes "Doing the right thing" means you have you protect someone or something from physical threat. if that Physical threat happens to be another living, breathing human being who refuses to give up either willingly or unwillingly are you willing to terminate the threat entirely to hold true to your ideals and "defend the weak"? during the scene where Raiden's hearing the inner dialog of the other cyborgs was an attempt for the enemy to mess with him, showing him the consequences of his actions when killing another human being who isn't just mindlessly combating you but also has a sense of self preservation, doubts and the fear of death. It's kind of like how MGS3 showed you the consequences of your actions during your fight against "The Sorrow". The difference is where MGS5 would punish you for killing enemies weather it can or can't be avoided, MGSRR had Raiden Accept the fact that in order to live up to his ideals, to "defend the weak", sometimes you have to take a live, or 10, to preserve a life. For Raiden however he ended up giving into his inner-madness he'd kept bottled up inside from his ptsd and psychological torment he had to endure to help him push through his guilt and accept the reality of what he was doing.

The music does such a dog damn good job of enhancing the setpieces, Masterfully used is the only way I can think to describe it. Games rarely get me to relate or feel anything, but I'll never forget that moment where RULES OF NATURE! starts up, I start laughing like a kid and say "Now that's fucking badass!" We go on and on about Platinum's combat systems, which is what they're known for, but I think their real strength lies in creating amazing setpieces that flow in and out of regular gameplay. It's hard to play a Platinum game and not just have a good time. They take the most over the top, cheesiest shit, turn the dial up on the cheese so far it comes right back around to being awesome.

  • Great video however one thing I must say. You missed the point of the “Jack the Ripper” plot point- and while yes it’s not perfect, it’s not misplaced at all. Another part of Raiden’s character is the fact that he is indeed living a lie. This is somewhat what happens in real life as well with soldiers who never truly leave the war, raiden was raised as a child soldier all his life and forced to live a massive lie. While raiden definitely wants to do the right thing he is actually living a lie.. This is even shown with his own name.. as he chooses to be referred to as raiden even though his real birth name is Jack. “Jack the ripper” acts as the ugly truth that Raiden tries to hide which goes with the theme that Armstrong and he are truly one in the same.. This is why even after everything Raiden is still technically a soldier.. that’s the truth that is what he was born for and lives for

    • I'd also like to add that he has to become jack who enjoys killing that way he doesn't have any hesitation or weakness. If raiden was constantly worrying whether what he was doing was right or hesitating to strike down enemies he probably wouldn't be able to beat the vilains who were more founded in their beliefs going back to what you said about the dynamic between raiden and Armstrong with the stronger willed wining.

    • But more importantly it touched on the contradiction of Raiden’s ideals. It struck a chord when it’s revealed that the enemies he kills are no more victims than the ones he’s trying to save. The idea of protecting the weak can’t help but lose momentum when you realize that you may need to slay them in order to do so. Between Moonson’s nihilism, and Mistral’s absurdism it had to force Raiden to realize that his current actions can’t change or justify his already bloodstained past. He had to accept what happened, and how it molded him in order to push his ideals forward which honestly made him no different than Armstrong.

  • I always love Metal Gear related analysis videos, especially for this game, and I'm glad you touched on how well the music was implemented. Not just in a "it sounds great" way, but in the way it fit into the game mechanically and was a great example fleshing out characters' motives and backstory efficiently. One thing I'd like to add is to the "jack the ripper" element and Raiden's character development in this game. It's important to note that he is the typical, serious, edgy metal gear character yet every boss villain he faces other than Blade Wolf (who consequently ends up joining him to be the straight edge duo) is more jovial and excepting of their own nature. Raiden starts as a serious "reaper", dispensing justice like he's Batman and is mocked for his lofty ideals and sense of morality and him holding back by almost every boss since his first encounter with Sam. Sam, Sundowner,Mistral, Monsoon, and Armstrong all act more happy-go-lucky, silly or constantly have a shit eating grin and except who they are and their purpose. Yet Jack is constantly scowling and restrains himself and "denies himself his purpose" or is unclear of what he actually wants. As he goes through the campaign though, he is tested and eventually, in a way, becomes like the others when he "gets Jack back" and excepts his past, his nature and starts smiling and laughing too. In a way, the plot of Revengance is just Raiden's own personal "Apocalypse Now" journey, with Armstrong being his Colonel Kurtz. The beauty of this game is it's as simple and cartoony as you want it to be if that's all you care about. But beyond the camp and full blown anime level hype, there are alot of deep themes that stay true to Metal Gear. There are other themes I'd touch on such as the parallels of this game to MGS2 and how that game was about repeating things itself and how Armstrong mirrors Solidus alot. Or how it's funny that every game Raiden is in has memes as a theme and this game is the most internet meme'd metal gear game, but this comment has gotten long enough. Great video.

  • That's a great video you've got there. My only disagreement is with the idea that the game lacks meta commentary, and that the Jack The Ripper personality change is just to introduce a gameplay mechanic. The Ripper personality change IS meta commentary: the game tries to force the player to feel bad about killing enemies, like Spec Ops The Line before it, but it acknowledges that the player doesn't feel bad and enjoys the act, which is why Raiden's confession that he enjoys killing lines up with our own experience. We don't care about the random enemies we've killed: we just want to keep having fun. You mentioned that Raiden is like a hunter, but he's worse than that: he's a cannibal. He stalks, kills and "eats" other cyborg soldiers, hundreds of them. He's completely animalistic and dehumanised, which makes his "I'm a hero for justice" rhetoric so ridiculous. Having Sam and Monsoon tear that pretense away and force him to acknowledge the truth just puts him on the same page as the player. It's meta genius, and kicks the shit out of Spec Ops The Line.

  • 33:00 and all that talk about the Jack the RIpper kinda part. My personal take on this was a bit about Trauma and how the coping mechnaisms you have sometimes fall apart even if you are well adjusted over time. Raiden has lived through fucked up shit and in response became bloodthirsty because relishing in it is easier in that situation than trying to constantly reject the thing you are forced to do. With time and therapy you might as well be able to work through things, act normally in society and have this trauma and the coping mechanism associated with that come up less and less often. Coming to the Monsoon fight where they deliberately try to trigger (actually psychological not... meme trigger ironically enough) him he of course falls back into... a bad habit. Trauma victims will experience that tug backwards into old habits more often than not, even if they are (self-)destructive. That it introduces a game mechanic to be used is of course a bit undermining that point but I feel to say he lets his hold loose on his trauma is about as realistic as suddenly channeling suppressed bloodlust out of nowhere is about on the same level of ridiculous to me. At least that was my reading of that whole story beat.

They give you an atmosphere of intensity, when I first heard Stains of Time I had to bolt up in my seat, it was too hype. I never have once tried to take that fight slow or methodical, it's a mad dash to beat this ninja memester into the ground and the music wholeheartedly supports this. Rules of Nature gives you such a massive feeling of badassery that perfectly sets up Sams utter decimation of RAIDEN directly after, showing you how far you have to go and what you need to master. I could go on, but I'm sure every fan of the game knows everything I will say.

  • About your thoughts concerning the issue of Raiden accepting his Ripper persona: I think his Jack the ripper thing in this one is supposed to be him actually coming to terms with the fact that he really is a butcher who enjoys killing people, even if it for right reasons. in MGS2, he tried to completely renounce his past as Ripper, and in Rising, he tried to continue that, using only sensibilities such as justice as reasons for his fighting, denying the ego side of himself that genuenly does enjoy the fight, which was something that Sam called him out on. Sam and Monsoon though assumed that forcing him to confront this would break him, while it actually ended up being theraupetical for him, and he finally decided to not pretend that part of him doesn't exist, but rather accept it, and use it to a more constructive direction, helping him win the fights against what he sees as evil. He ends Rising partially adopting Armstrong ideals and going full on fighting the evil PMC companies in his own personal wars, with joy on his face, no longer denying it's also something he genuenly enjoys. I think it's supposed to be a paralel to Big Boss in a way, who went on to path of visionary after being changed by The Boss forever. much like Raiden was changed by Sam and Armstrong.

  • Brilliant analysis! This game opened me to the Cuhrazzy genre when I replayed it (which I never do with games) in a no hit run. Its amazing how much you can do in terms of player expression. And even as a casual action game, it's one of the best. My friend beat it no issues, and he was not very good at games.

  • So, I really have to disagree with your assessment of Raiden's "Jack is Back" breakthrough. As corny and over-the-top as that scene is, it really struck a cord with me when I first played the game. As someone who had struggled with their Shadow Self their entire life, the idea that sadistic and cruel impulses could be harnessed, could be controlled and used for the greater good, was honestly what I needed to hear at that point in my life. Not EVERYONE has to "relish the killing," but Raiden does. Without embracing his crueler instincts, he was never going to fight at full power. He was never going to be whole without embracing his true, full nature, and I believe that that message has value.

    • So Snake in 4 was wrong I'm guessing? Raiden is as bad as he thought?

    • @Eriko. Oy We all have demons, my guy. The only question that remains is whether you run from them and remain fragmented, or embrace them and become whole. You can call it edgy if you want, but I assure you that there is no greater peace than being one with yourself -- ALL of yourself.

    • @Eriko. Oy I realize this is probably a waste of my time, and anything further that I say will be dismissed by you as edgy bullshit. That's fine. But I find I have to ask, in your mind, how old is the person you think you're talking to? Genuinely asking here.

    • @@blitzkriegdragon013 So, I'll level with you, my man: I haven't played Metal Gear Solid 4. Rising is actually my first Metal Gear game (and yes, I know it really isn't actually a true Metal Gear game). What Im speaking to here is more the impact this moment had on me at an important moment in my life, and how much I value it if only for the significance it has to me personally. Addressing your question more specifically: Risen embracing "Jack" does not make him a bad person. I strongly urge you to look into Shadow Psychology, one of the theories developed by Carl Jung. It theorizes that within every person lies a separate persona, sort of a bundle of all aspects of one's personality that they hate, that they wish they weren't. However, much as we would like to cast aside our shadow, we cannot. It always lies there, eating away at us from the inside, and crucially, it cannot be contained. It WILL manifest, whether we decide how and when that happens or not. It is therefore much better to embrace one's shadow-self, to re-integrate it back into your mental whole, and in doing so, gain control back over it. It is also important to note that the shadow varies from person to person. In some, particularly those who value strength, it manifests as a desire to submit rather than dominate, to embrace weakness and passivity. But whatever it is, it is much better to control your shadow self than let it control you. Bringing this back to Raiden: Raiden is most likely a sadist. He can either suppress I, try to deny what he is (resulting in incidents like what happened to George) or he can embrace it, wield his blade the way it desires to towards his own ends, and in doing so, become more whole a a person I hope this overly long-winded tirade answers your question. Please, I really do urge you to look into this in your own time. Its a very worthwhile thing to know about yourself.

    • @@Braxmegaman I already am familiar with Jung's theory. I was a fucking psyche minor. Now I suggest you actually play and/or watch MGS4. At least the Raiden scenes because it gets to the core of my argument. Raiden ALREADY went through this arc. 4 covered it quite well and with a lot more nuance. Raiden's arc hits its climax when Snake tells him "you still have your youth, don't waste it fighting." Raiden spent the game believing that he had become a killing machine. He came into the game with a death wish because he had found his "shadow" in Jack the Ripper. It gave him heavy PTSD and made him feel that he was beyond saving. Not only did Snake sacrifice himself to stop him, but his wife and child embracing him with open arms made him realize that he is more than a killer. That he is a genuinely good man who doesn't have to fight anymore. Raiden's arc in 4 was him learning that it wasn't too late to put down his blade. That he's more than Jack the Ripper. Revengance backslides this so hard, that he's back to where he was before the events of 4. He ignores Snake's advice, he practically forgets about his wife and child, and then decides that he is just Jack the Ripper and that everyone was wrong about him. It's fucking stupid and doesn't work for his character. Had this game taken place before 4 and after 2, it would have made a lot of sense. So no, his arc doesn't work in this game, because it has already been done in previous games, and done better.

    • @Trevor Anthony :O The base word is 'equip', and represents present tense; when you add the -ed to it, or in this case -(p)ed so it fits the goofy rules of english, it represents the past tense. To add another -ed to that, 'equippeded', isn't a word. Lots of people haven't been taught that, so don't feel too bad (it's still not a word tho)
