How to build a DIY electric powered fat bike with car tires start to finish

In this video you see me building a DIY electric powered fat bike with car tires at home in my garage. The video contains the full build start to finish. I added chapters below to easily navigate through the video.
I am a Mercedes and AMG fan so the obvious choice was to use AMG wheels.
It is powered by 2 hoverboard motors coupled together and 2 48v lithium batteries.
It drives fairly well, however it is very heavy so you have to get used to it to take turns. Brakes are a little underpowered, better solution would be hydraulic disc brakes from a motorcycle.
Technical details:
Wheels: 8 x 20" with 225-35-20 tires
Motor: 2x 350w 36v from hoverboard
Batteries: 2x 48v 72000mAh Lithium pack
Controller: 2x 48v 350W GT-100
Weight: approximately 75 kg
Topspeed: 40 km/h
Chapters:
0:00 - intro
0:12 - building the frame
8:52 - building the motor
15:02 - building the battery tray
17:29 - spray painting
18:22 - brakes and electronics
20:01 - presentation of the finished project and testdrive
Leave your questions in the comments, I will be happy to answer them.

In the beginning of watching this, I would have thought that having the wheels facing opposite direction would have made the balance better, it looked like most of the weight was on the right side of the bike. • Nice looking bike and kudos for the design. The only thing I can say, that may sound negative, but it's not meant to be, is that you should have made it a Softail with shocks on the rear and on the front forks. Hydraulic brakes might be a good addition to be able to handle all the extra weight as well. I think you did a great job, it's a great idea.

Do you can fly in the beautiful sunshine and fresh air enjoying the beauty that God has created All Souls matter to God Brown, white, red yellow black/ ARE PRECIOUS IN HIS SIGHT! God made flowers of many colors are all rely on the sun and the rain to grow to flourish. Before a flower blossoms into its beautiful form it goes through a struggle in the dark. It needs to fight through the soil is God gives it life to pop out into the sunshine with the beautiful testimony of how God gives growth to even a flower how much more important are you than flowers. And the same way humans go through things of all colors you may not see their struggle to grow you may not see their hearts cries. God does! so we are not to judge upon appearance we need to judge with a righteous judgment. with the word of God! we need to love and encouraged and build up and not tear down! • Very nice bike! It looks great. I have the same on my 'to do' list. You can put a motor in the front wheel too, to make it 2X2 or AWD. Battery and controller can be mounted on the frame and overall it will balance the bike nicely. I took an old Schwinn Beach cruiser, installed a mid drive bafang and mounted the battery on the rear carrier. Found it a bit heavy at the back and when I added a front hub motor, it balanced the bike nicely. Also built an aluminium battery box and put that in the frame 'triangle'.

    • Wheel diameter is about the same as a bicycle wheel, the brakes will work just as effectively.

      @olsonspeed@olsonspeed2 жыл бұрын
    • @@olsonspeed he mentioned the weight not the diameter, and his point was not without merit because all of that rotational mass is essentially a big flywheel or energy storage system. That said, given enough stopping distance I am sure they will eventually get the bike stopped. Obviously they won't be as effective as they would on a regular bicycle tire.

      @genephipps6421@genephipps64212 жыл бұрын
    • @@olsonspeed Nope the rolling weight of the tires and wheels come into plat as well. Mechanical bike disc brakes may slow a bit would not want to depend on them to emergency stop that very heavy bike, Also the motor is seriously under powered for the size and weight of the bike., But I don't really think he built it ride.

    • Yeah I think it doesn't make sense to have car wheels/tyres... The extra weight and friction must kill the battery so fast.

  • That’s an excellent fun build. Great job. I was wondering what your thinking was on gearing. One of those 350W motors has slightly over 10 nM of torque. So with 2 of those motors you’ve got 20nM. Which is excellent for such an inexpensive and small motors. Were you aiming for more torque or more speed with your gear ratio? I would like to hear your thinking on gear ratios.

  • All I have to say, this is an amazing build! My advice for such a heavy ebike 80-100 kilos is to upgrade to at least 10.000 - 15.000w motor with a good controller and big hydraulic brakes. Then you will have the fun of your life 🙂

    • Then put in a very good suspension seat post. Those tires will make for a very harsh ride and cornering will be a major issue.

  • This is a truly amazing build. Great work. Well beyond anything I could ever do as I have none of these tools or shop. My design critiques if you want to read them. Giant frame could have easily housed the wiring and stuff. Handlebars just look like some off the shelf item which is unfortunate since the bike looks amazing. Then the small details are also a bit unfortunate. The kickstand bracket, the battery tray how it attaches to the frame, and things like the motor mount and brake mounts are just 100% functional with no design. I love the shape of the frame. I wish that you had used a simple square tube for the battery holder mount attachment to the frame. Just have a square tube off the top of the seat post part of frame, parallel and level with the top bar and have seat post go through that square tube. Chop off that extra bit on the front fork that sticks out to the left of center.

Remember those really nice looking harley davidson show bikes, those motorcycles that had a really wide rear tire, and long stretched front forks to some degree. please build an ebike version of the harley davidson show bikes. that would be so amazing. you are so good at building! a true master of the tools and creating!

    • @Rocky Thacker I don't think so. Try roll a tire and turn it left or right. You don't need that much force to do it. But it probably is more difficult than a steering a bike.

    • Try that again with 40kg pressed on.. Becomes harder. And for turning on a bike, you need to ride on the side of the tire. Riding on the center and turning is also possible, but only at speeds below 3km/h. So not feasible for bike riding.
