I love how sheepishly it's ridden at the end. Great idea but I'd love to see if being ridden like a proper all terrain mountain bike. That would give a true idea of how this works.
It's a nice concept but thats about it, all the plastic is added weight, not to mention that it's also weaker
Considering that it's a low end bike with bolt on wheels. It will probably never see a mountain bike trail. Or at least not too far
Casual street riding, avoiding hard corners and curbs, it should be fine for a while. Actual trail riding? Rocks might crack the rings or taking a corner too hard might peel the rubber right off the wheel.

Great idea and wonderful job!! Don't forget the physics. If you put too much weight in the wheels, it means a lot of innertial momentum when the bike starts moving and rolling. It will be and will feel really really heavy...Specially in race bikes, the fact of add in up to only 100 o 200 grs in each wheel makes the bike feels very heavy.

Very cool, but now you have a thousand bolts to keep tight, not to mention the extra weight. Those circles will eventually break and then try to repair the wheel if you are outside on the road 😉
this is meant for usage within several hours only at a time.
Yeah but he can just keep a ring or two extra on the bike along with a wrench 🔧. If one happens to break I'm sure he'll still make it where he's going unlike a flat tire
@@skynetreboot8239 a ring or two? Have you seen a wheel become damaged? The aluminum ones usually bend in half somewhere across the whole rim. I just picture way more getting broken. That said- this idea with improvements in materials used might be a good airless tire afterall. That blue PVC doesn't seem the most reliable or really allow for the smoothest ride. Question is what's a better material 🤔
He didn't show every step, but without thread-locker on those screws, those nuts won't stay on long. As Andrei said, it's just a project to make a video out of, people with channels need content.
nylon or aluminum hardware would work better. I see trouble with lateral stabilization. Good Idea.
The basic design is very good. To prevent unwanted mud and dirt accumulation, a full covering outer tire design is needed as well.

Nice. I'd probably use rivets and spacers instead of the bolts, and maybe keep a few tabs of sidewall to fasten the rubber to the loops with zip ties or similar. Only way to get the weight down would be to use a lighter material than PVC, maybe thin loops of spring steel? Interesting idea.

Genius! Thanks for the idea!
Great video! You are an amazing man in many ways.
Looks cool and while I admire your ingenuity, the wheels would be heavy and impractical overall.
Not necessarily. Now there is no more rubber on the sides and no pressurized air inside which is denser and heavier than regular air. If there was a way to get rid of the bolts then it could end up being lighter.
@@BimmerWon The bolts will work out a way to loosen themselves without any human assistance 🙄 'cos bolts are clever little brats.
@Michael H seems like you are putting limits on what is possible. What I’m saying is you can reduce the weight so it’s the same weight or less than an air tire potentially. If you can do that and minimize efficiency losses due to the compression of the tire, then you have a very marketable product.
@@BimmerWon Hmm, those CO2 canisters that can fill a couple typical mountain bike tires? How much do those weigh? As much as a backpack full of PVC pipe and a couple hundred fasteners??? 😋
@@ozerik again you are not thinking outside the box and putting limits on what is possible. I’m sure there are polymers or some sort of other material that can be engineered to make this more practical than normal air tires.

great video as always.... though I was disappointed that you didn't show its performance over those shallow stairs or that sidewalk drop you showed in the pre-airless intro montage. I gotta love my tannus airless tires. No pre ride pressure check extra tubes or being late due to a flat. They are about as slow and heavy as my gator hardshells were, but I just got to pedal a bit harder.
Fair play you put some dedication into this, novelty this may be I can honestly see this being very useful in the future for bikes, it's been proven to work on cars and would be even more useful for bikes, replacing inner tubes is a major ballache.
It's technically been proven to work in cars in a straight line. The moment a car starts to turn is when they fail. On bikes, there isn't nearly as much cornering torque so it could work.
@@Gojira_Wins Where'd you see that? If a proper tire company was behind its making, it wouldn't just peel off.
Definitely we crave for some tests in the real environment: rocky and bumpy roads, potholes, moutains etc. Jumping on it. How reliable this is?
We use air tyres for a reason. Also i guess there would be material fatigue from repetitive stress.
@@n00breconbr75 Yeah, they've been trying to do a similar thing with car tires for over 10 years & they still don't have anything that can compare with air tires.
I saw the beginning of the video where he was nearly bottoming out on the rim, but after watching for a while I realized that was BEFORE he made the "airless tires". I was hoping he'd use a more flexible material in the airless tires because what we don't see in the video is any kind of use of the tires that squishes them down to near the rim
Should've taken an incredible amount of time to complete this project. Great video!
Wouldn't it be easier to just fill the gap between the wheel and tire with a garden hose?
Or could have just pumped some air into regular rubber tires to get a more comfortable ride. lol Also durability is a big question mark, as PVC is not designed for lots of bending, it tends to crack. If you hit a curb hard enough, it will shatter. Great for a fun project, but probably not really practical.
I loved it before I even finished watching the makeover. Great 💡 for stationary 🚳🚲 that still need to connect with my pro trainer. People just don't inner stand (understand) how "tiring" it gets to replace tubes.
Gotta love it. Good old ingenuity.

Looks like a hard ride, also ran and mud will be flicked everywhere!
Great work and job on this, I wonder how strong that glue is though
I can agree this is better than the normal tires and cool
All it would take is just going down a steep walkway because you underestimated how tall the drop is and didn’t want to go down the stairs for the plastic to break and then it’s game over, if it were flex able that would’ve been pog
I was thinking kind of the same thing... "but he can't jump with it, or can he?"... but i think PVC pipe (being circular) is quite strong, and having many circles distributes the force quite a bit. Harder ride, though... as the pipe circles transmit this force largely undampened, it could be too much stress on other components.
He shows the tear in the tire sidewall then makes the useless PVC wheels for entertainment...A better of use time would be to figure out an idea/good way to prevent sidewall punctures and make a video on it....Off subject, I'd love a fat tire e-bike for winter so I could put a ski on the front fork and tire studs in the rear wheel to make a snowmobile. They sell $350 snow track kits for electric & motorized bikes but the back track sucks and keeps falling off.
Great work! Did you tried how they behave with heavy breaking? Perhaphs at a hard stop the rubber can slide in these instances. A 2nd version can have some sort of attachment that prevent this, in case in happening. Great video as always
They aren't even round 😅 not to mention drilling extra holes into the rim. The least of my concern would be how well the rubber is adhestised to the tubing

Great concept, however I would be interested to learn how well the airless tires absorb shock. The PVC pipe appears too brittle for long term durability.
I thought shock absorption might be fine but they look very heavy for constantly rotating mass
Driving in a few inches of water, I'm sure they would bog down and slow you considerably.
Wicked cool, I recommend lock tight on those bolts & I wouldn't cut the sides of the tire's if they would fit...
