Fishing from shore with a Self-Setting Spring Loaded Fishing Rod.. Does it actually work?? Is it any good? Can we catch some fish with this thing? We head out to go saltwater fishing at the beach in north Florida with a mission - catch whatever bites! What kind of fish would be around the beach this time of year? I did not expect for this to happen..

I prefer a small brass khale hook for this type of fishing. Or shrimp on a jig head. I hook them Texas worm style through the tail. I think you should use smaller weights, but I'm not there and that current is strong. Keep posting this great content. Duuuuuuvaaaalllll!!!!!

  • You would have better luck using a j hook for active setting like that. Circle hook is not meant for active setting and can easily slide out without hooking the fish if yank like that. Circle hooks just need some pressure applied, thats why they are often used for passive fishing with higher drag to set itself. Change hooks and success rate goes up a lot.

However I think if you cast then set the mechanism and walk it tight and bury the spikes in the sand AT A 45 DEGREE ANGLE it will improve your chances dramatically. Looks alike the design is tension on the rod, not the line, sets it off. The 45% angle will allow for the rod to set it off properly. Just a guess. Try it out and let us know!!

  • Looks to me like there needs to be some improvement with the design. First. The spikes included are not universally stable. The spikes provided don’t seem to set deep enough into the sand to withstand the mechanical hook setting power and pops out of the ground all the time. There should be longer spikes for sand and a flat platform included to set rocks on top of or a single solid pole to slip between rocks if you’re fishing riprap or rocky shorelines. There really needs to be some kind of extra counterweight at the butt end of the pole for stability as well. I also agree the pole should be detachable from the anchoring post. The concept seems practical, just don’t think the design was thoroughly thought through for real life applications.
