  • I’ve been fishing close to 60 years and I always use rods according to the wind. Tiny rods are perfect for streams and ice, 5-7 ft rods are perfect for lakes, and 7-11 are perfect for surf fishing, including the Action, but anyone one of them can be used for any of the places mentioned. I go by the weather, all depends on the waves. It’s not whether you can catch a fish with a cheap rod and reel, just like any bicycle is good to ride, but there’s street/ road bikes, gravel bikes and mountain bikes for a reason. It’s all about making the experience, enjoyable. I no longer buy $1K setups. Now I just want to spend time fishing, and not catching anything at all doesn’t bother me a bit. But I still get good ratio reels and good amount of bearings. I don’t like cheep reels that wobble. Heck, the most fish I’ve ever caught and the most fun was as a kid in Mozambique when all I used was a bamboo stick and string tied to the tip.

  • Went to Cabo this winter. Took my ice fishing rod because it fit in my cary on luggage with a bait caster reel. Very much a not ideal set up, but I was determined to catch fish from the surf. Used some bait fish a local caught with a throw net down the beach from me. Let me tell you it was a blast. Caught 2 jack crevalles, a snapper and a skip jack tuna. It was some of the funnest fishing I have ever done. The fish in the small rod was thrilling. Highly recommend.

  • I grew up in Brandon, Florida, but I will never forget my first trip to Key West. We stayed at the hotel at 0 Duval St and I fished ALL day that first day. I fished at the restaurant on the dock across from the hotel and I was catching HUGE crevalle jack, bluefish, red snapper, even some red grouper. There were HUGE tarpon swimming all in and around the boardwalk. It was alot of fun. I just wish I had brought a heavier rig with me because I only had a Quantum Snapshot reel with an Ugly Stik 6'6" medium rod with 15 lb mono. It was a real struggle getting some of those bigger fish in, but with a steel leader it wasn't too bad. I was using cut up ballyhoo. When I got back I tried using the same cut ballyhoo at the Tampa Shrimp Docks but all I caught was sailcats.

  • Yeah, as a fisherman myself. That looks like an interesting idea. I personally would use say an 8 to 10 foot rod, with a 2 ounce weight, and 20 pound test. But I'm odd that way. When I fished the piers of Southern California. I used 40 pound test and steel leaders, most of the time. Its been a long time since I surf fished. I miss it. But now I live so far from an ocean. And my favorite lake is starting to freeze up. Any ways, tight lines and have fun.

  • You can catch the fish…… Hook the fish….. but bringing them in is another story. But it’s a lot of fun. I’ve been planning a trip for 38 years to return to Florida. Sadly this time it’ll be only for six weeks instead of 10 years. I have a lot of 1000, 3000, 4000, 5000 reel and fly rods. Over 38 years I have not added to my equipment. I have added 8000, 10000, 3/0 rigs. But I think I will use me light equipment just because it is fun.
