For every one of those complaining about not revealing where a site is there are many of us thanking you Mark.
Thank you!
@@MarkSmithphotography Wildlife first ! No one can argue with that Mark.
Birds are challenging to shoot at any location. I do all my bird photography at home, and let me tell you, birds are my toughest subject.
@David Burchette Spot on comment and @Mark Smith you absolutely did the right thing. We as photographers and enthusiasts are stewards of these beautiful creatures and have a responsibility to protect them so that future generations can enjoy their beauty.
Blows my mind when people ask for spots. Part of the fun is exploring and discovering new places. Google local trails, wildlife reserves, and look for public access roads in remote areas then take a long walks. I live in the same area as Mark and would absolutely lose my mind if he announced some of the spots on KZhead. It took many years of wondering, kayaking and walking to find some of these areas.
Respect for not revealing the locations of the various wildlife, it happens a lot here in the UK on social media and the locations then get inundated with people who rarely seem to put the welfare of the wildlife or the local people first. It pays to be discreet as far as I'm concerned.
I have had the same! if everyone knows were you go it can be a problem especially private properties, unless its a walkway best to keep it secret ! 👍👌
We live in Devon here in the UK and we have amazing beaches and moorland which gives us amazing wildlife.Last summer the moors and beaches were left like war zones.People have no respect for the area and even less respect for the locals. We are dreading this summer as we know already that holiday bookings are through the roof.I love my photography and when I see other photographers photo’s of epic locations or amazing wildlife I never ask where they got that shot,if I can’t find it myself I don’t go. So to anyone reading this and coming to the southwest for a holiday this year have some respect for OUR home and have some respect for US....or feel free to stay away...
HI Mark - My A1 is on its way from B&H - would love a setup Guide like you have for the A9
Looking forward to hearing more about the A1 and seeing all the amazing photos you take with it
Looking forward to your A1 settings video
I love your honest and straightforward answers to the questions today. Another great video, Mark!
yesssss, would love to see a vid on how you transitioned or a comparison from Nikon to Sony. These Q&A vids are very informative. Your honest thoughts are very appreciated.
I would love an episode detailing your switch from Nikon to Sony. I am late in the game, just in the middle of making the switch now.
Thanks Mark, good Q&A ... Waiting patiently for your a-1 setup video. This camera rocks so far can’t wait to see what you skills paired with it produce! Keep up the Awesome work!
Hi Mark and congratulations to your A1! You will love it...I got my A1 3 weeks ago here in Germany and I went out with A1 and my 600 F4...today I checked the first RAW files with Adobe Camera RAW 13.2 which support the A1...fantastic results and that's a dream combo..😉 👍
Camera RAW supports the A1!!! i DIDN'T KNOW.
Can’t wait for your impressions about the A1.
Great video. Can't wait to see images from the A1. Nice Strat too.
keep on doing what you are doing Mark! Very impressive. Your love for photography is wonderful to see. I used your A9 setup on both my A9 and A9II.
I love this Show Mr. Smith , especially on A1 soon, I'm waiting for this.
You get epic shots like no other! So cool to see the crystal clear and crisp Eyes! Keep it up.. Look forward to doing a workshop someday.. Thx
Keeping your shooting sites to yourself is a direct respect to the wildlife and it's the least we can do to protect their ecosystem. We love your channel for your work and your content, which brings the best of wildlife to viewers like us. Those using threatening language in getting the site info showed zero respect to your channel, and to the wildlife. Thank you Mark for keeping the sites undisclosed.
Hello Mark, your thoughts are alway good. Keep well, keep safe and be happy.
Totally agree with keeping locations private! The welfare of the wildlife and ecosystems we have the privilege to photograph take precedence. TY!!!
Hi Mark. Would love if you did a video about setting up the menus for the A-1 for video and still photography. I just got my A-1 the other day. Your past set-up videos were really great and very helpful. Thanks for all you do and hope to join you for a workshop in Washington State. Thank you
Thank you for not disclosing the info about where you get your photos. You definitely should not tell! Just subscribed!
Great q and a Mark. Keep up the great work!
Mark, I don't shoot Nikon or Sony but I really enjoy your work and these Q&Q videos. Always interesting to get a peek behind the curtain of another photographer's thinking and seeing. I'm looking forward to getting a copy of your book.
Thanks for this video Mark, very informative. Here’s an A1 question for your next Q&A video. You mentioned that the 200-600 doesn’t seem to work well with your A7R4 but is fine with the A9. I’m seriously considering buying an A1 along with the 200-600 so, would really appreciate your opinion as to their compatibility.
Mark Galer reported having some issues with the A1 + 200-600 combo.
@@GeertDelmulle Since posting my comment, I bought the A1 and 200-600. The combo is fantastic. I moved from a Nikon D850 which I used to couple mainly with a Nikkor 200-500 and have no regrets - the quality I'm getting with the Sony gear is light years ahead of what I could ever have achieved with Nikon’s. Personally, I think most people’s issues with the 200-600 lens is that they’re using too slow a shutter speed. That said, I’m not at all sure it’s compatible with the A7R4
@@mikeyb9819 Thanks for your feedback. :-)
A la espera de una revisión de la sony A1, pruebas y opiniones. Un saludo
Happy to see the Sony A1 in the right hands. Mark you have to show us what this beast can do STAT 🔥🔥🔥🔥
On it
Looking forward to your thoughts on the A!, especially in regards to noise levels at high ISO compared to the A9. I love the A9, just wish I had more pixels sometimes.
Totally agree with you on not telling anyone about where you found the animals.
I liked your comments about shooting with the 600 prime and the monopod. Very interesting.
Can't wait to see what the a1 can do.
YES! We want your answers Mark!
No pressure then Mark !🤔😀
the A9 II also have the setting to set the shutter to closed when camera is powered off
Mark, Thank you for answering my A7Riv vs A9 question in this video. Not only did you confirm what I was leaning towards doing, but your timing was perfect. My local camera shop is having a trade-in event this weekend and now I know exactly what Sony gear to get when I trade in all my Nikon gear tomorrow! I’ll miss my D850 and my 500mm PF lens, but likely not for too long once I get used to new Sony gear! Thanks again and keep up the great work!
Congratulations and enjoy
I had the same experience with the the Tamron. I replaced that with the 200-600mmG. Much better.
Great Q&A Mark. Regarding short-eared owls. People post pics and info on social media, esp Facebook, which has ruined two local short-eared owl spots in the last few years with little regard for habitat and birds shown by some of those who have visited these places.
Really want to see you make it huge with what you do!
You are simply the Best 👌
I got great shorteared owl shots recently and some bald eagles. Love your work
I have never been as impressed with a new camera as I have been with the A1. Interested to here what you think and see what you can do with it. BTW ... sorry I had to cancel on your workshop last week. Hope to get there soon! Thanks!
the problem for me with Sony from a budget wildlife photographer perspective is the lack of glass on the used market such as the Sony 600 f/4 G .... not everyone has 13 grand to drop on a lens and it is rare to find the sony f/4 used but with Canon or Nikon you can get a previous generation IS USM II or VR G 600mm for half that price. I actually have a now aging A7rii that I've been shooting with for a while now and as I've started shifting some of my work toward wildlife I started shopping around for options. I don't like Tamron or Sigma very much and I'm not really a fan of zooms so the 200-600mm Sony doesn't seem that appealing to me especially due to the variable aperture. I know the Z6ii and Z7ii aren't up to par with the dual pixel AF but Nikon is coming out with the Z9 in the next few months so that is actually exciting and Nikon has some really cool lens offerings like the 500mm PF f5.6 that is less than 3600$. Of course the Z9 is going to be pro level cost but so is the A1 from Sony and again used glass is more readily available for Nikon (with FTZ adaptation). I think the Zii cameras are actually great cameras they just aren't the best for action at the moment. One can only hope that Nikon will continue to release firmware that improves the AF on those cameras. In the meantime the announcement of the Z9 gives hope that Nikon is committed to staying competitive as we move forward. It's a tough time to make a decision on purchasing a system. It all feels like a gamble to me at the moment so my course of action is probably going to just be to continue saving money and then see what happens over the next few months.
Useful and entertaining. I don’t think you have to worry about Sony seeing this video and then working out your A9 has had a hard life; I think that is pretty much obvious just looking at the camera! Enjoy the A1. You have helped me make up my mind to go for an A9ii
Thanks for your videos, I'm a fan. I'm also a guitar player, nice special edition ax. All the best!
Thanks
YES!!! You're awesome, Mark (3:41min). Thanks for the backpack info. I've been on the hunt for the backpack that'll hold my 600-F4, and I thought yours was "da bomb!"
It is! You are welcome.
Mark.............you kind of touched on it in this video and I'd love to see you do it sooner rather than later. I'm referring to you mentioning your transition from Nikon to Sony around the 10 minute mark. I think that topic alone would make for a great and informative video for those who are considering the same move.
This would interest me as well. You also mentioned a review of the R5 in one of your previous videos. I assume you were not impressed or we would be hearing more about it. The A9 with the 200-600 is a strong recommendation. I will be looking closer at this combo.
In the process of doing it now. It seems a lot of people are interested in this.
I get that the best option for our type of photography is the A1 and 600f4. In my case, I am looking to move from a D500, 500PF. Going with any other brand is a major investment to get that kind of reach and image quality.. Mirrorless will make liveview and video so much easier. Better focus accuracy would help and I can't even imagine what real no blackout tracking must be like. But, jumping from a $5k system to a $20k system is a huge step. Can you provide your thoughts on image quality with the 200-600. I have experienced the Tamron, Nikon difference and settled on the PF for lighter weight. If I do my part, the 500PF provides outstanding image quality. Do you think the 200-600 Sony is as good at the long end as the 200-500 Nikon or comparable to the primes? I know your a pro, but us little guys value and appreciate your advice. It was your advice that put me on the D500 and 200-500 to begin with and I have no complaints.
Love your channel. I use the Sony a6400 w/ 200-600mm and love them. Still want to go full frame at some point.
Hi Mark, I've been doing photography since 1967 when I bought my first "good" camera, a Pentax Spotmatic. I've learned photography the hard way, by trial and error. I broke my Fujifilm camera last week so I have an excuse to get a new camera. I ordered a Nikon D850 and a 200-500mm lens. I have enjoyed your videos and am looking forward to learning how to use this new camera. I guess it will be an exercise in teaching an "old dog" new tricks.
About the Tamron 150-600 lens, most people just stick it on their camera and expect it to work perfectly. They should check the autofocus when they first purchase any third party lenses and fine tune it if necessary. I always do this and have had no problems. (I have both the Tamron 150-600 G2 and Nikon 200-500).
100% true. And it can take some time to do it. But on an SLR body, I consider the tuning interface for third party lenses to be an absolute requirement. Native lenses certainly get much closer to the ideal on average. Even with tuning, I had a better hit rate on my 5D Mark IV with EF 70-200 2.8 w/ 2x teleconverter than my Tamron 150-600 G2. I never adjusted anything for the Canon lens.
If I wasn't already subscribed, you'd have a new sub just for being protective of wildlife & their environment - thank you. Curious to hear you expand on your thoughts about the Z6II (I love mine), and hopefully review the Z7II for us. Thanks Mark! 🙂📷
I have both Z6ii and Z7ii. Love them! I don’t know why Mark would insinuate the Z system is not “fun” to shoot with. Eye of the beholder, I guess. Want a compelling reason to stay with Nikon? Look no further than cost savings. With what you will save on the body, buy another fantastic Z lens or even three.
Would love to see your experience with the A1 and 200-600mm combo. That is the reason I hold on buying the a7R4 and wait for the A1.
Mark, another great video and I look forward seeing your review of the A1. For "some" of us, that camera, with associated high quality lenses, may be financially out of reach (as are some other high end cameras). Nevertheless, I learn a lot from watching the videos. That being said, it was because your earlier videos that I bought the Nikon D500 and I am pretty pleased with it (not sure whether the osprey in my Sweetgum tree is though). Like one of the guys in your video, I use the camera in combination with the Tamron 150-600G2 and I like the lens. Yes, they might be not a super sharp as the photos you produce, but certainly not bad at all. One thing I noticed (and I believe others have commented on this as well), you really get the best results at the 400-450 mm range of the lens, at 600 mm the photos are "soft". I am considering comparing with the Nikon 200-500 to see the difference.
Would love to hear about your Nikon to Sony transition as I'm looking to do the same from a Nikon D7100 to probably the Sony a9ii or the a1 unless the newly announced Nikon Z9 can compete with the Sony a1 or a9ii -Thanks!
Fantastic video Mark!!! Lol I hang on your every word! I knew you would be getting the a1 it only seemed right! I tried adapting the Tamron, and Sigma 150-600 lens to my a7rii and a7riii and was not happy at all. Life is much better with the Sony 200-600 on the a6600! Thinking of moving to a a9ii or a1. I love shooting landscapes and birds! The a1 is real stretch, but not out of reach! It would be great to have just one camera that could do it all. Lol I don't do video!!! I can't wait to see what you have to say about the a1!!!!!
Mark, I really enjoyed watching your a9 best settings video tutorial for birds. I’d appreciate if you could do the same with A1. It would be great.
Kudos from the UK on the SEO non disclosure
3:45 We hear the bark of a small dog, and a moment later, Mark says, "I have five dogs." Nice, Mark, but is any of them a _bird_ dog? I apologize for having been one of the multitude who asked about the a1, but it seems such a good fit for you. I can't wait to see what you, the master, can do with it. If it's as good as they say, in your talented hands it will probably get killer shots even as you nap. I am impressed by this, the first I've seen of your Q&A videos. I appreciate your candor.
Waiting for your A1 set-up video!!
Love these videos, I have the Nikon D850 and very much un decided on if to switch to the Sony A9 thee mirrorless would be great for the BIF I shoot however the less MP when cropping seems to be my sticky point on doubting the switch. Great videos keep them up :)
I have a D850 and am sticking with it. I still have a lot to learn about the camera -- and photography.
I had my a7r3 hit by 5 or 6 waves, one was a total soaking. I freaked out but it still works great. I was surprised after hearing others complain of poor weather sealing.
Please do a Canon r5 vs Nikon D850 vs Sony a1/sony a7iv/ sony a9/ II
Hey Mark, thanks for everything, especially ur thoughts on respecting wildlife by not sharing places u take pictures of what people should respect, when takin wildlife photography seriously. Ospreys aren’t disneyland, and if someone didn’t get them as a motive they should better start watching before try takin pictures. Love ur thoughts an advice. Thanks again and hi from Germany. Falk.
I can really appreciate why you would not want to disclose some locations. Not all bird/wildlife photographers love nature. Many are simply into getting nice photos - at the expense of the wildlife they are photographing. So in my book, you did the right thing. Great job! 👍
A9ii has the closed shutter option. It’s in the settings.
hope you test the Z7 ii soon
Nice information
I would love your opinion of the A1 ASAP as I'm about thinking about to make the switch from Nikon to Sony. Nikon announced a new flagship for later this year, maybe they will do better on autofocus than they have-not sure I want to wait to find out, although all my Nikon lenses makes it a hard decision
Hi Mark , great to see you have got your hands on the A1 , would love to know how it performs with the 200-600mm , I am contemplating buying one but would welcome your opinion also how it compares to the A7Riv when paired with the 600mm f4.
Excellent ! Will you do the teaching video ? "Sony A1 bird Photography Setup and Usage Guide " like "the Sony a9 Bird In Flight / Wildlife Photography Setup and Usage Guide" , It is helpful ! Thanks!
As always Mark you make such easy to watch and informative videos. I am looking at the R5, but am also thinking maybe the a92 would be better. I want the best of al worlds, wildlife, sports, and portraits. If you has to choose the A92 or R5 for the all round, which would you choose and why if you have time, if not just which would you choose? Thank you Mark.
you could play your guitar as background music ... would love to hear it!
Hi Mark, love your work and I would like to know if when taking photos of flaying birds you use hand held or tripod most of the time? Thank you and best regards Clem from Queensland, Australia
we have to protect the wild life.. your right.
Just an idea, have the sound of you playing the guitar on your intro to your videos? I hope you do a Setup on the A1.
Nicest KZheadr ever
My precious 😆
Mark, Just adding my voice in there... VERY glad you don’t disclose locations of the birds. Would love to hear your process of moving to mirrorless from DSLRs. i wonder how much of that plus is due to the ‘no blackout’ speed of some of the Sonys? Thanks, craig
A lot!
Great to see another video from you Mark, personally I value your opinion and nothing you say could upset me, stay safe buddy. Congrats on the A1.
Thanks for that
Left my Nikon D850 for the Canon R5. No regrets. Best camera I’ve ever owned!!
Ditto swapped my D850 to A9 Awesome no regrets
How would you compare the high ISO quality between the D850 and R5? Also, what lens are you using on the R5?
Surprisingly very similar dynamic range, ISO and image quality to the D850. I’m using to Canon 400mm f/2.8 III, and 1.4x teleconverter.
Hi Mark, Thank you for your videos. why dosn't the A7R4A have Tracking:Flexable spot with Anamal? do you think it wil that come in a firmwear update?
It would be nice to Compare the D850 With the A1, also at end of videos you could play the Guitar for everyone who wants to hear you
I've found shooting the Tamron G1 at 550mm instead of 600mm and at f7.1-f8 vs wideopen to help with sharpness. But don't shoot BIF either. Of course the Sony 200-600 is much better.
Hi Mark will you be doing a set guide for the Sony A1? Please, Please, Please.
Yes!
Hope for a quick preliminary version,Mark, please.😎
I have the a7r3 I'm debating about whether to upgrade to the a7r4 or go for the a1. I shoot mostly landscape and print up to 4 foot x 8 foot, or even larger. I know you just got the a1, but I would love to know if you see any resolution/dynamic range difference between the r74 vs. a1 at iso 100 for landscape. I also shoot some wildlife, but it's not my focus. I'd rather get the r74 and 12-24gm than just an a1. Would love to know the difference in resolution and af speed for BIF. thank you. love your videos and images.
I'm just setting up my brand new A1 to follow mostly your instructions for my trusty old A9. However, I notice that focus peaking works when I set the dial on the top of the camera to manual or use the button on a lens, but not when I generate a saved profile that sets manual focus. I use and love that third back-button autofocus setting you have where the center joystick button retrieves saved configuration 1. That configuration has manual focus activated and is perfect for when a bird lands on a perch with some twigs just in front (i.e. almost always). The focus assist works like a charm, but no focus peaking. Bummer! Am I missing something or is this a bug? There's also a problem with the entire Sony lineup, and I suspect many other brands as well. I expose to the right using the histogram. However, when I do that for very high contrast scenes with a 15-zone dynamic range, the primary focus points in my composition might be too dark in my EVF. So, I set "setting effect" to off. However that effectively turns off the histogram and the zebra stripes. This tells me that the histogram is of the EVF display, not the sensor. I can see how this might have been necessary with first-generation computer power. However, with the A1's TWO big processor chips, I would have hoped that they would have made the histogram actually of the sensor rather than the EVF. Maybe I'm missing something obvious, but have others noticed this? In case people might not understand, I loooove the A1!
Great Video, Mark !! I have a question about the a1. I have the a9ll and it is an incredible camera. Also have a D6 with a 500/4. I typically shoot birds and end up cropping extensively in post. I found that shooting with the D850 (and other Nikon 40 + MP cameras) and cropping usually left me with noisy images. So, I’d like you to test that 50MP monster (a1) and compare the noise to the a9 and maybe show image comparisons. I mean if I can use my existing 100-400 and 200-600 Sony lenses and then crop the a1 images to get even more “reach” without increased noise, it will be a happy ending : ) Hope you can do a comparison. Don
Hey Mark, request you to compare Sony A1 vs Z7 2 vs R5 🙏🏻
Hi Mark, You do not rate the 200-600g with the A7RIV body but how do you find the 100-400gm with the A7RIV
Larry White. I am curious as the whether or not you find that the Alpha A1 overheats during video in temperatures over 75 degrees in the sun(Dan Watson 's review)?
This is probably the only channel I watch videos till the end and select the next video from the end card. Thanks Mark for your valuable content and storytelling. I am planning to buy Sony A1 to shoot 8k nature videos and animals. What two lenses do you recommend that can be used both for video and photography? Thank you.
200 600 for sure then a prime
@@MarkSmithphotography Thank you
Hey Mark, waiting on my shirt!!! I too am on fence upgrading from A7r3 to either a92 or a7r4. I like the resolution but why would you pick a9 over a7r4? I will be using with 200-600
I'll take your advice on the A9 vs A7R IV. I think the raw file size on the A7 is too large. Im planning to upgrade from a point and shoot camera to a full frame sony with 200-600mm. I'll keep my eye on the market for a year, maybe the A9ii will drop price, who knows...
Actually the SONY A911 has that feature as well with the most recent software update as far as closing the mirror
I've been wanting upgrade from my A7iii but can't decide between the A9ii and A7Riv, I am using the 200-600 and it's interesting you recommend the A9 over the A7Riv when using this lens. Guess I will go for the A9ii, the A1 is out of my budget :-(
Obvious question #99: Will you be creating a Quick Start Guide for the A1 soon? Thxs
Mark, I just bought the 600 f4... what is the size/length of the additional tripod foot plate...(excellent idea for hand-holding the large prime) Thx so much
What mode do you shoot in? Also what is your metering mode for dark color birds? I use spot but is their a way to link it up to a focus point? Sometimes I use manual mode and Aperture mode other times. What’s your opinion? Oh, sorry, I forgot I use the Sony a1. Thanks
Good Q & A. 👍🏻 Very cool guitar. Ola Englund is a very good guitarist, if you don't know him and your into heavy music check him out. Looking forward to a Sony A-1 review in the future.
I have one of his guitars!
@@MarkSmithphotography They look like nice guitars. How do you like it?
Hi Mark, you mention in this video, you really enjoying shooting with the Sony cameras. Can you be more specific on what you like about the Sony Cameras (AF, Image quality, etc.)? What did you dislike about the Nikon Z6ii or Z7ii? Last question, will you be shooting 8K video with your new Sony A1? Really enjoy your channel.
Everything about the sony cameras is good. I don't have anything that I don't like. The z cameras have lag in the evf and it is difficult to use. I will be trying some 8k video eventually. I went out and shot osprey all morning in 4k 120 and it is glorious. Expect a video soon.
I just picked up a used A9! I’m a long time Nikon shooter and ready to put down my D500 & Z6II and try this camera out. I’m picking up a Sony 200-600 tonight maybe…. What do you think Mark? Should I be excited
Would love to see you jam but you're right, it'd clash with the focus of your channel. HOWEVER, why not consider adding some music that you play to the videos? Your images range from peaceful grace to high drama and a low-volume music bed, not competing with your voice narration, would be awesome. Soft acoustic pickin' to high-gain electric at the right moments would be awesome.
Mark, will you be doing a settings guide for the A1 like you have for the A7R4? I would love to have one when my A1 arrives especially since the menu system has been updated. I set up my A7R4 off your settings with minor tweaks and love it. With 55 pages of menus or whatever it is, would love to be able to download your settings and walk through a guide.
Yes I will
@@MarkSmithphotography Awesome!
