Thanks for taking the time to do this.
My pleasure!
Thank you for work Mark. I'm really looking forward to the A1 guide.
Thanks Mark for this video. Was really helpful. Especially the shutter speed question as well chaotic situation in wild is something that I personally wanted to ask and good to get your view point on that. Thanks again
Really appreciate the time you put into these videos Mark , very much looking forward to your A1 set up video , be interesting to see how your A1 setup differs to how i currently use mine
Thank you for taking the time to answer questions, very informative.
Always look forward to these
Wow Mark, thank you for taking the time to answer my question!!! That helped me out so much. I was shooting eagles at a shutter speed of 500. 😳 I can’t wait to get out and use your recommendations.
That will fix it!!
Your a9 setup book & video were terrific. used it on my a9m2. Been enjoying my a9m2 for birding for over a year now thanks to your settings. Just got my new a1, can't wait for your new video and ebook!
kzhead.info/sun/Z7h7ddKGfoRmfpE/bejne.html
thank you for posting these videos. I always enjoy watching them and they are very informative.
Unreal you do most of your photography handheld especially with the 600mm f4. Holding my Sony 200-600mm even just by my side using the handle kills my back over an extended period of time, and im only 23 years old! If im in 1 spot I always try to use my monopod just so im not holding the weight. You also said you used the black rapid qd strap but prefer not to use it. For my Iens I got the Kirk plate and the black rapid strap qd and it is my 'insurance' haha. I mainly run and gun and I always keep my camera on my strap, it sits perfectly by my side and I still use the grab handle to take a little weight off. I mainly keep the camera attached to strap and feel it does not hinder my movement. I only detach when I go stealth and lay down. Its only at this point the strap is in my way, because without the weight of the camera, the strap falls off my sholder.
Thanks for this video. Look forward to your ebook setup for A1.
Hi, cool Q&A. It's good that you're taking your time to make sure the guide is perfect! I'm sure everyone would much prefer to wait, even a year, rather than to have something incomplete or with mistakes. 7:50 please make that video, I'm curious to know how those new motors translate into better captures in the real world.
For long hikes with my a1+ 200-600 lens, i use a wide/ thick peak designs strap. I set one anchor up on the camera and one on the lens foot. Then i can put it over my head and wear it diagonally (camera rests close to my hip). I find this to be the most comfortable and i can quickly swing the camera into action.
Hey Mark, First of all a big thank you for your Sony a1 setup guide video. You made my life very simple. Though I have just got the camera & took it to its maiden outing, the results I have got are fantastic & a large part of that is thanks to how you helped me set it up. So thanks. Now the question, I have gone through most of your videos (Q&A as well as bird photography), I found you suggesting A9 + A7Riv combo on multiple occasions. Now that we have a1 (which I think brings the best of both the worlds together, not to mention the video capabilities as well), would love to hear your thoughts about your recommendations. Thanks & please keep doing Q&A videos, they really help.
Can't wait for your A1 settings video. I used your A9II settings and didn't change a thing except shooting JPEG sometimes.
Great job. I really enjoy the Q&A
Thanks
Great info as always! Thanks Mark
Thumbs up for the Charvel. Top Content!
Your videos are great. I just got my a1 yesterday and it’s a beast. I don’t have to do much in the way of editing it’s very close to my style. Just updated its firmware and will be going to A local beach called Osprey Row. Their are Eagles and red tail hawks their also. I also have the 200-600mm lens and 24-70mm GM and along 70-200mm GM lens. This is by far the best camera I’ve ever used!! Will try your settings and will let you know. Keep those beautiful videos coming!
Congratulations and good luck!
Great Video Mark! Thank You!
Thank you! from Japan
Vous êtes le meilleur!! (Your the best!!) Can't wait to get your pdf A1 setting!!
Excellent content as always. I generally use a quick release strap with my Nikon D500 paired with my Sigma 150-600mm Sport, I carry it with my hand on side grip so it’s at the ready all the time. The first time I tried to use it without my strap was this past July in Yellowstone National Park and totally dropped my camera with lens as I was hurrying out of my truck to capture some action. Of all places to drop my lens, can you believe that! I sent my lens to Sigma but the damage was too much so I now need to re-purchase the lens (they thankfully gave me a trade in credit) but I didn’t have it insured! Dummy me, lesson learned. Love your videos, Mark. By the way I live in Southern Alabama would love to go shoot with you, come up to the Eufaula National Wildlife refuge and “Let’s Go”!
This heart wants more :) Felt it was too short. Hope the next one coming soon Can you please share which OSS options you use for 200-600?
Mark don't forget sensor resolution also plays a choice in shutter speed. A1 will need a higher shutter speed to get same amount of sharpness per pixel as say A9. Something that causes 5 pixels of blur on the A9 for example, will cause 11 pixels of blur on the A1 at the same shutter speed. It the same as using crop cameras with high MP density.
Thank you for taking the time to do this Mark! Yet another awesome video (-: I have 2 questions for you, 1- Do you shoot in Manual mode with auto iso with your Sony cameras ? If not then what mode do you use & do you use manual or auto iso ? Lastly, if you have to choose between the A1 and the combo of a7Riv & a9, which one would you choose ? Thanks again!
I haven't owned the a9 but unless you need 10 extra MPs or you need 2 bodies, I don't see a use case for a9 and a7r vs a1. a1 is a Major step up in almost every category for Riv and has all the performance of the a9... Don't see many people disappointed with the A1 choice, I know I am not..
Good stuff, thanks Mark! Can't wait for the a1 set up video but realized your a9 set up video is largely applicable, at least for stills. I'm sure you have several changes but I just switched the C1 button to toggle between the animal, bird and human eye settings. Been several times when photographing birds and all the sudden a deer walks out of the tree line. Just need press C1 and it instantly changes to animal eye... pretty sweet!
I think they all work simultaneously. At least they appear to on my a1. Maybe something new in the latest firmware because there is a screen where you can have all three selected and when I tested it it worked for dogs and humans at the same time.
@@MarkSmithphotography Interesting, I’ll have to try again. Even though I had them all selected as available, it was not catching the eye of a deer when I was actively on the bird eye setting. When I toggled to animal, it instantly grabbed it. With that said, I’ve had the camera for three days (Nikon convert), so I’ll defer to you 99% of the time, LOL 😂
@@adammutolo5800 I could be wrong too! I haven’t extensively tested that
Nice video
What did you have for breakfast today...actually would like to know if you are bringing out an A1 how to shoot video video? Thanks Mark, your videos are outstanding, and often pretty funny, like your A1 Owl sighting.
Yes I am but it will be a full fledged course for sale.
Thanks for making this video Mark! Did i miss the part where you talked about disabling/enabling image stabilization?
I might have left that out? I turn it off at 1/1600 if a second or faster preferably 1/2000 of a second
@@MarkSmithphotography thanks so much! Been tinkering with different settings lately with A1 +200-600 ( on or off or setting 1 vs 3 ) but then again I'm usually on a boat where I'm guessing you usually aren't. If you're ever interested in alcids (puffins, dovekie, common or thick-billed murre) we can have them via fishing boat Dec-Mar out of NH.
Great Video as always, curious to know if you are going to do another video on your latest Bald Eagle trip?
I will have Several!!
Hi Mark again thank for all your work and sharing these amazing videos.I own a sony A9 since June 2019, and I must admit that it is a Wonderfull camera. But one thing I am concerned is video settings, so could you share please your own video settings on the A9? Kind Regards.
Excellent video and looking forward to the a1 setup video. Question: Florida late Sept/early Oct, best bird spots?
That’s a little soon I think. Doable but soon and anywhere in the state honestly
Mark, as always thanks for putting in the time to get this video and other stuff you do. I am using the Alpha 1 with my 200-600mm lens. When the birds are flying and you are using a high SS what do you do with OSS buttons. Do you just turn off OSS and keep it on with mode to 3. I'm not really sure if it makes a difference but some are adamant about the proper setting. Thanks again and can't wait until the A1 ebook comes our for purchase......David
Great video as usual… nice job! Quick question on insurance, do you just have a rider on your homeowners or with a 3rd party that specializes in photo equipment?
Hi Mark, love your videos and I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of your book. Any idea when it will be dispatched?
I don't even shoot Sony and I enjoy listening to you talk shop whenever you have the time to sit down and produce one of these videos. Due to budget and back constraints I'm shooting a camera with a much smaller sensor. However, you mentioned cropping into a "tenth" of a frame on the Sony A1, my question is have you ever equated what that might be equal to in terms of a digital zoom when combined with your 600mm f4 lens? Just curious.
Hi Mark, i have seen your video on Topaz softwares and it was quite informative and helped me get my copy of the same. Would you be able make a video on Adobe's enhance feature as well?
do you use, or prefer, Lightroom or Capture one for processing ? 11:33 thanks for the tip and answering my question. tip from my side. when you buy using your credit card there is usually a limited insurance against theft or other damages. Goes between 3-12 months depending on your card. came in useful when i dropped my Nikon D850 and 200-500mm.
Hi Mark, I had just acquired a Sony A1, and will be getting the Sony 200-600 zoom. Would you be able to do a video on how to assign camera settings to the custome keys. So far I am enjoying the A1, it is versatile, and well designed. My next purchase will be the Sony 600mm telephoto lens. Will you be doing a comparison video on the two 600mm zoom and telephoto lenses? Thank you for the amazing videos.
Hi Mark, thanks for all your videos they are always jam packed with good information. Do you have the TShirts with a "V" neck (more for ladies I guess) and what is the underarm measurement of a size large. I am in Australia and no point in ordering if it is not going to fit. Cheers, Grace
Thanks and yes they are available in a v neck I think
Will you make the downloadable file available for the settings on you’re website?
Mark, I am excited receive your Osprey book. My question is can I order more books as gifts and have you ship the books directly to my friends? This book is going to be my number one Christmas gift this year and man I am going to buy a lot of copies. Got the A1, but menu's are so confusing. Need that set up guide. Thanks, Ralph
Thanks Ralph! Yes, you can buy more copies here: photoworkshopsandtours.com/index.php/product/osprey-the-glorious-pursuit-of-unbridled-determination/
Hello Mark. I enjoy your videos and your excellent photography skills. I watched thie video because the title included "Disable Image Stabilization". But I don't think I heard anything about that in this video. So my question for you: When shooting BIF at shutter speeds of 1/2000 or faster, do you disable Image Stabilization?
Yes! For some reason that part got cut out of the video
Hi Mark, I just asked you this past week about a A1 settings video. After watching your A7r4 video I got mine and your when you did the a9II set up video I got that body. Thanks so much for all that you do. I haven’t checked yet but do you have affiliate links on the products you show us. I looked for that monopod at B&H but couldn’t find it. Did you purchase the base separately? Any possibility of you sharing what you got. I also use the Promedia Katana Jr. and love it. Thanks so much. I’m up here in Steinhatchee Florida. Not even a traffic light. Stop by if you’re ever in the area. I want a 600mm now! Thanks again so much
Yes I do. You can find the monopod with the foot here. It’s gone up quite a bit since I purchased it. msmithphotos.com/index.php/tripods-camera-bags/
@@MarkSmithphotography The link doesn’t work.
Hi Mark, I was wondering if there was a follow up the focus thingy that you had on the 200-600. Is that a 3 d printed clamp?
Mark do you have a link to that zoom ring attachment?
Make a sony guide to the a mark 7riv.
photoworkshopsandtours.com/index.php/product/sony-a7riv-quick-start-guide-for-bird-and-wildlife-photography/
Hi Mark what insurance do you use for your camera gear?
what is the most sold bird image that is not osprey?
Mark I've been watching a lot of your videos and I'm into it. I searched KZhead and google with this shutter speed question. I'm using a GH6 and my lens is a 100 to 400 (200 to 800 equivalent) usually zoomed all the way in. So the problem for me is camera movement. Would I want to go way high on my shutter speed when zoomed all the way in with a super zoom. Please let me know what your thoughts are. Thank You.
Always use the fastest shutter speed you can in my opinion.
Canon you can buy the r5 and a killer lens for price of the Sony body
That upside down Sony lens cap is killing me. 🤣
Mark what is the model # on the Manfrotto Monopod? Thanks.
🥰 Thanks for answering my question about the handle!
My pleasure
From the A9 24mp to the A1 50mp Could you go back. Is it really that great. And how does the real world keeper rate compare between a9 and a1? Cheers
Mark can you get me a link for that pull zoom ring, I’ve tried to find it!
I have the Sony 600 FE GM. How do you insure a $13000 lens?
Sir, could u please tell where do I buy this zoom ring for 200mm to 600mm
I shoot sports and wildlife, do you think a 400mm 2.8 and a 1.4 TC would be good for wildlife? Then I could use the 400mm when shooting sports and use the TC when shooting wildlife. Thanks
Yes very much so
How far of the A1 setup please
Hi Mark, the heading mentions "Disable Image Stabilization?" but I could not find the Q or A. Did I miss it? Would you mind to comment on this? I did turn the IS off occasionally but could not find any advantage. Do you recommend it?
Sorry for some reason that got cut out. I turn off image stabilization around 1/1600 or more
@@MarkSmithphotography thank you , Mark. Does the AF really work better/faster without IS?
It doesn’t work better but the image stabilization doesn’t interfere with it.
Hi Mark, I am hobbyist photographer. I am also retired. I like to get into wildlife photography, but I simply can't justify the cost of the Sony A1, A9, etc. or the Canon R5 and the expensive lens. I am currently own the Nikon D7200 and Z50. Any suggestions on what to buy? Really enjoy your videos.
Nikon D500 and Nikkor 200-500/5.6 is great for the money.
What Richard said
I have problems with tracking and now I can't get my Sony 7riv to hold I. The center it keeps moving.
Do you mostly shoot in manual?
Hi Mark, I couldn’t find a link to the Manfrotto monopod. Can you tell me the model number? Thanks in advance
Hi Mark, I have been shooting with my Sony A1 and the 200-600 mm Goss lens. I am struggling to get a sharp image. I realize that it is the shutter speed is the main factor. I still need to adjust the iso and the aperture settings. Any advice?
Charvel!
Great guitars. Currently my favorite
Just wanted to let you know your link above ( Osprey: The Glorious Pursuit of Unbridled Determination ) does not work
We miss your Nikon videos hope the new Z9 takes you back from Sony
I hope they hit it out of the park with the z9 but they are so late to the game. Just the small amount of people I know have jumped ship and got tired of waiting.
shetting your shutter shpeed tshirts please 😂
Lol good idea
Damn wish I got a free $700 gimbal
1st
Question regard a9 w/ 200-600 I set up my camera exactly to your video guide as well as trying out different variations and settings with regard to auto focus, frame rate, metering, ISS on vs off and all AF tracking modes while photographing birds & especially birds in flight. One consistent issue I fond across the boards and happens regardless if bird size or distance from my lens is that once I lock focus on a bird that is perched the focus will lock on to the back ground OR the branch it was perched on or the nearest brach in tge tree immediately while the bird takes off. For over a year now I have missed 100% of my shots regardless of tracking sensitivity. Even when lit with amazing direct sunlight. I typically shoot b.i.f. at 1/3200 to 1/6000 or faster and f/6.3 o f/8 if & when light permits I always go faster shutter and stop down to f/8 Regardless once the bird moves off that branch it's game over for the AF tracking the bird can fly thru the frame or straight to me only to be ignored by the AI in the auto focus. isn't this the selling point of the a9? It's amazing ability to aquire focus instantly and remain locked onto the subject? In thousands of exposures I yet to see this happen. IF a bird is flying w/o a cluttered background I usually can acquire focus quickly enough and mostly it will remain on but once the background is the tree lone or anything else it becomes unreliable. Also I am not new o photography. I have shot several documentaries and short films (mostly hand held) and have plenty 9f photography experience...so not new to this but I am new to b.i.f. and the Sony system. This issue occurs on both my a9 and a7iii. Do you think this lens is a "bad copy" as so many people have claimed sony to have sold? Or What am I missing here?
