Tony & Chelsea Northrup review the $6,500 full-frame 50 megapixel 30 frames per second (FPS) Sony A1 (sdp.io/a1) camera vs the $4,500 45 megapixel 20 FPS Canon EOS R5 (sdp.io/r5) camera. They test eye detect autofocus for portraits with both humans and dogs. Then, they take wildlife photos to test the bird eye AF. Next, they test two sports scenarios: photographing people running at the camera and motorsports / cars.
The results are genuinely shocking - the Sony A1 frequently blows us away with its speed, but the less expensive Canon R5 also wins many of the comparisons!

  • Great video - conveys a lot of information while being very entertaining. Better than regular TV these days. As far as Sony Alpha 1 vs Canon R5, I would think the real competition would be the Canon R1 when it comes out... the huge price differential and the fact that the Alpha 1 is Sony's best, while the R5 is priced more like a 5D Mark IV replacement, should indicate that the real match up is yet to come. The fact that the R5 does so well is the "shocking" result of the video. I am really becoming addicted to Tony & Chelsea videos - you are both enjoyable to watch and never fail to bring a smile to me after a long day. Thanks!

  • "Switching focus priority to Release would increase the fps but decrease the number of shots in focus" => that's actually a big assumption, and it means you didn't test. In reality, you will often find the exact opposite, and for ex. Jordan used 30fps with Release and got all his shots in focus. And what mode was the R5 on? Is there a setting to change that? If not then it's Release by default. Don't you think both cameras should be set at the same settings (or at least very similar) in a fair comparison? Also, it's pretty clear the 70-200GM is the bottleneck in that test. When you test a camera, you don't want to limit it, so you should use the best possible lens, in this case it could have been the 135GM for example. This is true for all tests of any kind. For example when comparing GPU speeds in games, you want to use the fastest possible CPUs as well, in order for the games not to be limited by the CPU.

    @youuuuuuuuuuutube@youuuuuuuuuuutube3 жыл бұрын
    • The difference is that I can pair any GPU with any CPU, so testing them independently makes sense. What if I'm a sports shooter who needs the 70-200 focal length? If I get the a1, I'm stuck with their outdated glass. What the camera can do with other lenses attached is irrelevant in that scenario. I need a camera + 70-200 combination to perform well.

  • Please test the A1 with a lens that can keep up with the 30 frames per second ie., the 135 1.8 gm and the 24 1.4 gm for instance. These lenses have been built for action. Using the outdated 70-200 2.8 was an unfair test.

    • The 135mm, maybe. But the 24mm? Who IN THE BLUE HELL is using a 24mm lens for sports? But realistically, a sports photographer needs to be using whatever the best 70-200 is on their system. In the case of Sony that happens to be a slightly outdated lens. It's no good to a sports photographer saying something like "well the system was designed for newer lenses like the 24mm f/1.4" when they _need_ the 70-200.

  • Hmm, i'm not actually that convinced that Sony actually front focused on the first comparison. It seems to me like Sony shot simply has slightly deeper dof. It looks like that when you compare a spot that is slightly "deeper" in the photo than the eyeball, look at the conjunctiva on both shots, it looks pretty much in the same sharpness. Actually the Canon shot looks ever so slightly blurred, perhaps it is simply the motion blur. Also no shit that the photo was brighter, it was ISO 800 vs 400 :P But i guess you meant that the auto iso was better on Sony?

    @Eihei@Eihei3 жыл бұрын
    • It does look like the Canon photo has motion blur. They said the difference in exposure is because of the automatic metering (did not specify whether that was Av, Tv, P, A or only auto-ISO), which Canon kept getting wrong. I'd like to know what metering mode each camera was in since I've ever found either Sony or Canon to struggle with backlighting + a dark subject when focus-linked spot metering is used.

I do not know about you all but almost every time I view photos at 1 to 1 ratio or greater nothing in the photo I took looks okay at that magnification. You mentioned matching the settings. The settings are not matched if your labeling is correct. The Sony A1 is at ISO 800 and Canon R5 is at ISO 400. There’s lot more chance that autofocus will get continuously updated. A7Riv might get replaced with A7Rv soon and iv will stop getting updated. Also, with SDK being opened up, there’s more chance A1 will get some computational photography upgrades. The A1 sensor might have advantages when taking pics of Aurora Borealis and Astrophotography. Sports and wildlife should also favor A1. 8k video is probably useless and shouldn’t be a deciding factor, but A1’s oversampling 4K video might be of interest. The $500 difference is nothing once you factor in lenses. Hope it helps.
