This is a comparison between the Canon EOS R5 vs the Sony a1. Though there is a major difference in price, I think you might be surprised how well they stack up against each other. There's been a lot of talk about how you shouldn't compare these two cameras, but that talk is wrong. Both of these cameras are stacked and packed with fantastic features. The question comes down to, which one is right for you based on, how much you have to spend and what system you are going to stick with.

Just a shout out to Jared, one of the few KZhead personalities that can capture my attention for over 30 mins!! Great job! Great comparison video!

Both are quite amazing and completely out of my price range
This is coming at a perfect time. Thanks Jared!

This was another great video, very concise and just honest go between the two. Loved the end bit especially of acknowledging how some people don't have access and how switching systems isn't always the right choice even if the bosy might be slightly better or such.
I love what Sony and Sigma is doing with compact primes for E-mount. E-mount has a great support by Zeiss and Voightlander. Also, unless I'm terribly mistaken, you can adapt lots of non-Sony/Minolta DSLR glass on E-mount, including Canon glass. That being said, Canon has some great compact zoom lenses for R. A1 is better but not by much despite all the tech ... and at that price R5 is amazing. So, I'm getting Pentax.
Absolutely agree on the display. Especially comparing it to the A7R3a and A7R4a.
Great comparison and entertaining as usual Jared 👍🏽
In such a situation of equality, the sniff test could be decisive!
Always, always appreciate these video's 💪
Went with the r5 for practical reasons and don’t regret my purchase. They’re just awesome
Same. I'm loving it for everything I do.
The a1 isn't worth the incredibly high price increase over the r5, that's forsure.
@@RiposteThis I’ve always felt Sony had a lot to learn about color science. Their tones just feel off
@@kdaugherty230 Sony has a lot to learn about a lot of things tbh. Their IBIS is not good and doesn't do what they say it does, their LCD screens are horrible and basically 6 years old, like 90% of their lenses are mediocre and cost a ton. Colour science like you said is meh, kinda green and just doesn't feel nice imo. The Canon R6 and R5 are amazing cameras. If I ever switch from Nikon, which maybe one day I will, it will be to the Canon R5, that thing is amazing.
Same! 🙋🏻♂️
I love the R5. I used to shoot Canon, switched to Nikon for the D850 and now switched back. The R5 is so easy to use and well built and durable which is important for Wildlife. I'm sure Sony is just as good if not better for Image quality, but I love Canon's ease of use, value, solid build and glass. Great video, Jared.
Thanks for the great review. One question: How many picture you can shoot in timelapse mode with one battery?
The more i watch JP.... i really like watching them (the videos)... the information is truly reliable.
Great video! Very informative and you threw in some fun humor. Very well done.

Thanks Jared! I love these videos! 😉
Great Video. Refreshingly independent. Seems to come down to the glass. Which has the best 100-400/500 telezoom? Sony FE 100-400mm G Master or Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1
I am now considering trying to grow a ‘fro… Thanks for the awesome videos packed full of experience & expertise!

Another nice, informative video. Thanks. I already have Sony a7Siii and a7Riv so not getting either of these cameras anytime soon. Btw, I think most viewers already have your "Guide to Capturing Motion in Low Light!" It's time for a new offer Jared! Just saying....
The 28-70 2.0 canon lens is one thing that will make me go for the R5.
Doesn't matter there is only one difference which is aperture ie 0.8 stops. Always for sony
@@gauravgangurde1610 2.0 to 2.8 is a lot, A lot for a zoom lens. And all the people says the 28-70's sharpness is unmatched. For now sony has better sensor technology but technology changes physics doesn't. So i would go with better lens. Amd because of the R mount, canon has the advantage to develop better lens.

It is SO nice to see two stable camera companies competing this closely in the new world of mirrorless systems. Even with the used camera equipment market, it's tough for ordinary consumers to have to go through a change of vendor or even to a different model line in the same company. Like many others, I spend a lot more money on lenses than camera bodies and I keep the lenses longer. Clearly the new mount gives Canon an advantage, as well as its long history of producing top-quality lenses in quantity. Still, it is heartening to see that some of Sony's newest glass is getting rated near the top in quality. That's reassuring for the future. I personally think that the mirrorless technological revolution is only part-way over. Both Sony and Canon seem to agree with that. It was a huge relief to see Sony coming out with a big improvement on its revolutionary but now aging A9 stacked sensor. There is a clear issue of cost for stacked-sensor technology. Putting a new version into a flagship camera while you drive the cost curve down makes a lot of sense.
Another nice comparison. Sony did an awesome job with the A1 and Canon should be really proud of how far they have come with the R5. I shoot the R5 and the R6 and my biggest beef with the R5 is the dual card types (should be the same) and not being able to record video to both cards for redundancy. I am sure I would enjoy the Sony if I owned it but I do not see anything I am missing by shooting the R5/R6. @Jared Polin looking forward to seeing the shots from Citizens Bank Park
Wonderful Video Jared!
“Select start” thank you!!!
nice job, like the comparison
Exellent comparison video ! ! What a tough choice. I'm in that position where I need to choose which platform to jump onto. The Sony pluses are; The Sony lens, even the GM lens, are cheaper than the Canon R lens so that by the time you add up an equipment list the price point between the Sony system vs Canon becomes a lot narrower. Also Sony makes a 200-600 G lens that makes a lot of sense when you want to move up from the 70-200. Also Sony's 400 flash sync is a fantastic feature too as well as the longer non-limited video recording time. 50 mega pixels vs Canon's 45, and I believe you can switch between shooting full-frame and APS-C which can make your lens more versatile. Having the SAME card slots makes perfect sense. On Canon R5 side: The Canon body is cheaper. Also It seems the Canon R glass is 2nd to none and is better than Sony's GM glass. Their 85mm f/1.2 and 28-70mm f/2.0 look killer. The rotating rear screen could be a nice thing to have on occasion. What to do, what to do ? ?
Hey Jared for the heat tests, is this only inside with controlled temps? I’ve heard that both cameras struggle once you start going outside. I live in Florida and some of the weddings I do get pretty dang hot. How does that affect the heat performance?
Great video as usual! Thanks for the breakdown....I have to go with the R5 for the stabilization and price. The fact that it competes with the A1 at the price point that it is at is amazing! Frankly you can buy the body and a great lens for the price of the A1, for those of us that haven't arrived at gear head nirvana yet it is a great option.
Photos compete, video does not at all. A1 smashes it
Nice job Fro!
33:03 R other one, yup! I'm super curious what the R3 is going to be like. I'd much rather cameras don't include a grip but let us choose to add one if we want. Other than that, I'm hopeful it'll be an awesome camera.
i think it's the first time i hear you say "thank you very much for watching" or at least it's the first time i noticed it if you ever did before and i kinda liked it tbh. Maybe it's the fact that you're not saying it often but it felt really sincere. Thanks for your videos Jared, I truly appreciate your work !
Every fix I say it.
@@froknowsphoto oh my bad, I guess this one hit me differently I don’t know 🤷♂️
I have a Canon 500mm f4 mkii lens that I would not part with, and the images that this lens and the R5 create are amazing. The 1.4 extender also works very well.
I only hope r5's video performed as it did on stills... + easy on post production... would've been perfect hybrid cam
To help me decide which platform to invest in, I’m comparing the RF glass to the GM glass. Specifically, the auto focusing motor drives. We know the subset of GM lenses with the linear drive system can acquire focus quickly and keep up with 30 FPS on the Sony. I’m assuming all (?) of the RF glass can do the same? With the FPS bar changing every 9-12 months, do we know yet the FPS limits of either the RF or GM glass? I don’t want to invest in glass that can’t keep up with future bodies. Thank you for any insight.
Great video... but didn’t help me decide at all. Help!! I shoot cycling crit races. The motion is extremely fast when I’m sitting at a turn on the course. It looks like canon has better tracking but the A1 is faster FPS. Any suggestions one way or the other?
I shoot primarily A7R4 for stills and A7Siii for video. Nothing on the market right now makes me feel like it would be an upgrade if I switched. Sure, the A1 is a pretty good approximation of those two cameras rolled into one body, but what's the point unless I want to shoot 8K (which I don't).
If you ever try to shoot anything moving with the R4 you’ll probably be disappointed.
Thanks again for such an informative video! I'm exactly one of those Nikon shooters for decades and considering switching over to mirrorless... the Z7II is useless and the Z9 probably too expensive, so I'm looking into switching the system. But my tendency goes to the R5 which is just overall for my work the more balanced camera especially with those RF lenses. BTW thanks for the real world/life video of you using the R5 shooting the cartoon artist, which exactly showed what I needed to know... I will still patiently wait till the Z9 comes out and then make my move...
What did you decide finally? :p
@@sh1904 I bought the R5 and couldn't be more happy! Also the RF lenses are beyond impressive. By now I have approximately 80'000 shutter counts on the clock 🙈
Great vid Jared, just wanna let you know that you can adapt A mount lenses on the sony, the same as adapting EF lenses to the canon, but other than that, great stuff! Keep it up!
This is really helpful, and I love use of the konami code!
there are definitely moments were having a rotating screen is extremely helpful. But most of all I just like having the ability to close off the screen so that it isn’t exposed when in a bag. The best screen however is on the Panasonic S1H which rotates and does tilt.
Hi, I am a new Sony Alpha 1 user and I have noticed that my new Sony Alpha 1 machine has been slightly hot for three minutes while I was adjusting the menus. As I continued to adjust the menu, I felt the Sony Alpha 1 inside my hand getting noticeably hot when I adjusted it for ten minutes.
i second your request for some kind of haptic response to shots being taken. that would be satisfactory
I own the a7r3 and want to upgrade. Now that Canon has caught up and might surpass sony do I switch? I'm so on the fence between upgrading to the a1 or start over with r5. Hard choice. I have so much sony glass it seems I should stick with sony. Like you said, first world problem.
I wanted to ask :D great video, thanks
Needed a side by side wind tunnel and sniff test. (great video though)
Hey Jared, I do not hold the shutter for 5 seconds but I do crop and sometimes even a LOT. Should I slap myself also?
Nikon portrait shooter here for over a decade, using a D800 professionally for the last 7 years or so. I really wanted to stick with Nikon, but just couldn't wait on them any longer to catch up with the competition. I considered the A1, but the thing that pushed me to choose the R5 instead (camera arrives today!) was the glass. I also bought the 85 1.2, and even though that's some seriously expensive glass it was the same cost as if I had just purchased the A1 without a lens. Given how close they match up, it's hard to justify switching to the A1. I'm also considering the 28-70 f2, which if I buy it will make it about the same cost as buying the A1 and one high end lens. Even if I don't end up buying it, it's really cool that Canon is innovating with something like this lens.
Nikon shooter since the D200, I now use a D810 (studio, fashion, portraiture, nude). I am sad that Nikon is not anymore in the running for the AF capabilities. I have some Nikon hardware and lenses and I am still waiting for a new up to date Nikon mirrorless body. I love the Nikon cameras, color science, lenses and the look and feel. Sony has made great efforts to become the head of mirrorless world. But I think I would never go to Sony. Sony 's hardware is changing too fast, becomes obsolete very often. It must be much more difficult to sell old Sony cameras that Nikon ones. Switching to Canon is neither an option.I hope Nikon will release soon a good mirrorless body (as good as Sony for the AF reactivity) at a decent price. Until that, I still use my D810 with very good lenses.
@@filetdelumiere5037 hardly becomes obsolete very often. I’m still using an a7iii almost 2 and a half years later. It only becomes obsolete if you’re in the video sphere. Even still there are still people that shoot 1080p. It really matters who is behind the camera. Not what’s inside
@@filetdelumiere5037 I'm with you. I still think Nikon's files look the best out of the competition (and with a 7 year old camera!). Plus the camera designs feel the most intuitive. For example, just where they place the aperture/shutter dials. For some reason Canon makes one of their dials vertical (why?!), and the Sony dials (at least on the A1) felt like they required a good amount of grip to move. I also prefer the Nikon menu system, but I just couldn't wait any longer for them to get the autofocusing corrected.
@@waynedennyphoto if you're talking photo Nikon and Sonys (Zeiss) glass are the best, Canon (had for the longest) the best and fastest AF, but Fuji has the best colors out of the camera.
@@waynedennyphoto I was in this same position and bought the r5 and am hiring the 28-70mm. It’s amazing but it’s SO BIG! I have realised that I really just want a prime 35mm f1.2 and canon don’t have one yet in the new system. It seems like Sony have more options and smaller set up.
11:19 uff that's a very old picture of the Sony lenses. APS-C-E-Mount plus FF-A-Mount with only the first couple of FF-E-Mount-lenses.
On the A1 I use a Sony 128 GB SD XC 2 card which reads 300mb/sec and writes at 299mb/s. I get 30 frames/sec when I use with compressed raw files no problem. Not suitable for making film, need the CFexpress type B card.
Lmao that edit @ 33:11 is like a rated r movie on broadcast TV. 🤣
Nice compare. I think if kind of feels wrong to say should you get an R5 or A1 because you either know you need that processing power of the A1 or you get the R5. Nobody looking at either of these cameras should be new to photography, if you are you probably have more money than sense.
Nice overview, Canon holds up very well indeed to the A1 beast. Me? I'm hoping for a mirrorless D500.
Could you do a more in depth video on way you choose Sony over Canon when you made the switch from Nikon?
Thank you Jared 🙂
Very well done video.
Good comparison, indeed all the ✔️ sony got are normal to get for that extra money. I think at the end of the day, most of us will choose based on what glass we already have. The price of the camera becomes subjective when we consider that, not to mention being in love with a lens character 😅. Im very curious about the new macro from cannon with bokeh control, i can't wait for your review to pop in youtube, and i want to see if it gets close to the sharpness/detail king that the sony 90 f2.8 is 😅. Some sony lens are just ... My god, and some are like bruhhhh 😅 i can't forget and forgive that 28-70 my camera came with, was making the camera worse than a smartphone
love my R5! i also use a 90D as my primary backup for photos, and a sony axp-55 4K as backup video. i also have a 200D Mark II, and an old Fuji XA10 when i dont want to lug around heavy camera gear. all are great but i had to bleed for the R5 haha
As more and more cameras get better at doing everything “great”, then the difference between all those great cameras will pretty much disappear.
All cameras producing great results will drive the prices down
Nice job Jared, always love you and Steve! As a company that primarily shoots weddings in NY, NJ, CT, we went with the A1. We just couldn't run the risk of a camera overheating during a full Catholic ceremony. Interestingly as far as cost goes (this is what we did)..... the A1 with the Sigma 28-70 f2.8, and Tamron 70-180 f2.8 totals $8,596. The R5 with their 24-70 f2.8, and 70-200 f2.8 totals $8,897. We put the extra $301 towards some pro grade SD Cards. P.S.- Tell Steve, he's my hero. Great job editing.
Hi Dood ! Would you tell me please why FROPACK3 does not appear on LR ? Does wort it only with RAW pic ? Thanks !!! (TikTok Cam LOL )
First, thank you for the video. Second when you were comparing prices you seem to have said with the grip the cost difference reduces from $2600 to $1700., why? The grips for each camera are about the same. If your assuming adding the higher priced Canon grip with ethernet you still would then add the grip to the Sony as well would you not to keep the battery life the same?
He added the Canon grip to equal the Sony's ethernet connectivity, not for battery life. Besides, the Sony grip costs $320, not $999!
Hi Jared, what do you mean when you said: New ¨Pan Shot mode¨ in EVF? ... min 26:46
I jumped ship from Sony over to the R5 and some of their top RF glass. I do weddings, events and Real Estate. For me it's been quite a transformation indeed and glad I did it. I know many make light of the "color science" argument but I have to say after my first wedding with it I'm totally hooked on the Canon's output vs. the Sony's. To each their own. There's nothing Sony is offering that would dissuade me from my decision at this point. The eye autofocus is unreal good as is the focus system in general. I don't even miss shots at all which is astounding to me. Exposures are dead on and if the few aren't are easily adjusted with a NO NOISE penalty. The ergo's are still better with Canon as well.
That’s perfect summary of real life advantages than paper specs . I shots with Sony for 6 years until I picked up EOS at as my first Canon and I was hooked . People often forget that Canon offers 5 years warranty too. Canon customer care is second to none . Sony need to redesign camera bodies . Current design is outdated and impractical. Sony has paid enough money to paid youtubers to make Sony look awesome but in reality it’s no where near Nikon or Canon
Stupid question but going to Ask. Does the R5 Canon take / accept regular L lenses ?
Great Video!, like always :)
Just a heads up, you can do 1/32000 electronic shutter with Fuji's as old as the X-T2.
I'd like to see a real world review on the Samyang 85mm F1.4, and the 14MM F2.8 for the RF mount ($1,300 for Both). I think both cameras are the ones to get. I've settled on Canon myself for now, but the A7IV is a body I'm keeping an eye on.
I had samyang for 2 days and I returned it, then I bought rf85mm 1.2 😂
Jared ....it's a good video and it's a tossup that who wins this and in my personality r5 wins because of the price point and a lot of features that donot in sony
I have several Nikon Z lenses and hope Nikon comes out with an R5 competitor. I don't need the large size of the proposed Z9, but hope a future "Z8" will fix my Z7's poor low-light focusing ability and improve its face/animal tracking. If Nikon can come through with that, I won't feel the need to go to Canon or Sony as I love the results I get from my Nikons. I just want some basic tech enhancements that we should all expect in 2021.
Is there any reason to avoid 50 ISO with Sony?Sometimes I hesitate to use it
With the difference of price between the two you can buy another camera or a great lens. Canon did a great job with that R5.

This is the best looking video you've put out... Did you record this in 8k on the R5? Do you record out to a recorder? Thx!
I believe he has said he records this in 4K HQ on the R5.
Thanks! Same as we've been doing lately, R5 in 4K HQ mode, all internal
He mentions it in the video. They record in 4K HQ (which is the 8K sensor readout downsampled)
When does the left hand version come out?
20:18 but maybe it is affecting the stabilization of the images by introducing some micro shakiness
Which is a better choice between R5 and A7S3 ?
These are merely tools to get a job done. The differences between the two may be significant to certain users depending upon their needs or particular shooting style, however for me the differences are insignificant. As Jared points out part of your decision is also based upon the entire system with considerable weight given to the lens options available. With all that being said both cameras are amazing achievements in technology and producing phenomenal results. But for my particular photo desires, if not actual needs, the camera that most challenges my bank account at the moment is the Fuji GFX 100S. Truly stunning quality, amazing versatility, professional build quality, and razor sharp lenses all add up to a winning solution that for my money is every bit on par or better than the R5 or the A1.
well done, but you missed to mention, that sony is lack of focus bracketing: check for the canon
I have the r6 and I’m happy. Lol not either of those. I shoot mainly kids sports and I have an ancient MacBook Pro. I do like that Sony does have the aftermarket support. Hopefully sigma and tamron will release some rf lenses soon. Not holding my breath for that anytime soon though.
I love that you are very clear about everything with some humour
The R5 is indeed incredible for the money. I'm eagerly awaiting your R1 to A1 comparison.
It will compare the r1 to the a1 mark ii
OM-D M1X; hopefully you can get an exchange, hopefully. If not, remember it's the photographer that makes the photograph, not the camera. You will find some solace in that thought.
