Good on Sony for realizing how special Mark Smith truly is. Very few flying bird photographers consistently produce the results that Mark does, regardless of the equipment he is using, but with the newest Sony tools, he is nothing short of phenomenal. His images are breathtaking, sharp, full of explosive action and if like me you have had the opportunity to shoot with Mark, your appreciation for who he is and what he does is endless. Congratulations on your new print book and you continue to amaze.
Thank you very much Ralph!
Very pleased Sony acknowledged how fortunate they are to have you on their platform!
great to hear the Sony sponsorship! You do far more than just speak well of them, you unpack technical capabilities and creative possibilities for product owners and that is much appreciated.
Finally... Good to see Sony acknowledging the contributions of Mark towards their ecosystem... He is the primary reason behind me switching from Canon to Sony. His setup videos for A7R4 ans now A1 has helped us all so much... Congratulations Mark and here's to many more in future 👍
Great to see you work with Sony - you are one of the main reasons I switched a few years ago and your setup videos and ebooks for the af in particular have been very useful. Get on it Sony!
Wow, thanks!
Same here, Ex-Nikon D500 user thanks Mark
The straw hat is dope af, when you hold the camera, it's like wizard of osprey. 😄
Lol, that’s awesome. I love that.
Congratulations Mark, ANY brand is lucky to have you showcase their gear. Gear matters, but it is the photographer's skills that make it shine.
Here's a little story... about 3 years ago I took a trip to FL and was searching around youtube for places to shoot, photography information, etc. Back then my longest lens was a Canon 70-200. I happened upon this channel and asked a few questions in the comments, I was delighted and amazed that Mark gave helpful and straight answers to a total stranger that hadn't purchased anything or given back short of commenting. Fast forward to today and my birding and action photography skill have improved dramatically. A lot of the expedited learning was through your channel and a few others I highly regard. I hope Sony reads these comments, I too purchased my first Sony 2 years ago and more recently upgraded to an A1 for wildlife. I do think for myself but a fair deal of that decision was the many videos you made showing the incredible capabilities of these cameras and how customizable they are. I truly couldn't be happier. I see talk from fans hoping you become a Sony artisan, that'd be great as long as you can still keep it real with us and tell it as it is in regards to products. I truly feel as photographers we respect honesty coming from both people that represent the companies on social media and the companies themselves. If there's an issue with a camera, admit it! Thanks for all you do and hopefully I'll bump into you on a Florida shoreline sometime in the future.
That’s awesome to hear. Sounds like you’ve have a great photography journey so far! To many more great days! Cheers
@@MarkSmithphotography Thanks Mark, nature photography is fulfilling in so many ways!
Mark, your passion is contagious! Glad Sony finally noticed. Thank you for the great tips. Keep up the great work.
Thanks, will do!
You're the person who made me confident enough to switch to Sony for photography (I shoot Sony for video, but shot on Canon prior to your videos)! Excited to watch this video and happy that Sony's sponsoring you!
That's awesome! Congrats on the new gear.
Hey Sony, if you are listening…..Sponsorship is not enough. The Artisan title is beyond well deserved at this point. Congrats Mark! Keep inspiring people to love the birds like we do!
Thank you!
If it wasn't for your incredible shots and your own journey with Sony, I would have never made the switch (and would be blissfully ignorant of how much of a gap Nikon had) - so I am glad Sony is recognizing your work. You probably converted more wildlife photographers to Sony than anybody out there! And if I were to bet, the satisfaction rate has to be near 99% (there's always a grumpy guy somewhere). Cheers
Mark has always seemed like a normal guy, down to earth, trustworthy.....I followed him to Sony. Glad to see he's getting some recognition. He deserves all of it.
This goes out to SONY - if you’re not paying Mark Smith for all the great things he says about your product… you should !
Oh you ego massager
Just under the video it states that this was done in paid partnership with SONY.
Great video, great photographer, and great guy! Thanks for sharing your passion! 💕
Hey Mark, I cannot thank you enough for the awesome videos. As a relatively new photographer, I really appreciate your willingness to spend time with us, sharing your tips and advice. I credit you and a few others I follow with for helping me become better each time I go out. I'm a St. Lucie county guy so seeing the jetty and inlet was cool! Thanks again and I hope I get to run into you sometime to thank you in person.
I’ve had a camera since 1965 (10 years old) and switched from Nikon to Sony 4 years ago. I’ve only been shooting birds since April!! This helps a lot. Thanks a ton for your videos especially the A1 set up guide!!
Glad to hear it and you are welcome. Thanks for watching.
What took Sony so long? Between you and Mark Galer, I have my Sony A1 and 600mm so dialed in, I don't even think about the gear just the wildlife behavior and composition. 😎🤙
That’s the secret! Shhh! Don’t tell anyone!
@@njrtech thank you very much!
Well deserved support from Sony, Mark! And after three decades of Nikon loyalty (beginning w/an FG-20!), you’re seriously making me rethink my commitment to Nikon (D500 & D850 + prime lenses) going forward. This short video captures your lifelong passion and joy. Looking forward to meeting you in November for the Bald Eagle excursion and the arrival of your Osprey book in December!
Congrats Mark!!!! It’s about time Sony!!!
As others have already said, you showed me in a workshop what I was missing in not having Sony gear. I now love my new A1 and glass! I shot 1x1 format marine b&w this summer after shooting birds this spring. I’m shooting street in NYC right before Christmas. No other camera I have ever owned covers more genres so well as the A1. I look forward to joining you again soon in FL! Thanks Mark!
Bill glad to hear you are enjoying the rig!
Great vid mark its always lovely to see someone move up in skill and gear it’s a massive learning curve I started 4 years ago bird photography and when I look back to the beginning and all the mistakes I was making to know I like to think I’ve improved !! And hopefully in the future be somewhere near where you are now ? which is great by the way !! Keep shooting the story’s mark because you inspire people like me !! Well done
Your work is brilliant!!! Your knowledge shared is invaluable and my inspiration to continue to practice and grow. Thank you, Mark👍🦅
Great video Mark & I would say that Sony has a terrific spokesperson! 👍😉📷📷
Thank you!
Thank you Mark for your beautiful videos and now great information! Blessings ❤
Congratulations on Sony awesome work as always thanks mark
A very informative video 😊. I love seeing your Osprey & bald eagle photos. You just have a unique connection with these birds and able to capture them in a way I don’t think others can. Looking forward to getting my book 😊
Thank you Judy!
Mark thanks so much for the time and all the work you put in your video's, it really inspires me to get out and photograph what sparks my interest.
Job well done!! Your enthusiasm is contagious. Thanks for sharing.
YOU ARE AMAZING ! Inspirational!
Love it: osprey photography in shorts and a tee. Here in the UK? Pretty much hide only to get close shots otherwise camo head to foot (including lenses!). Thanks for the tips and it's great to see you working with Sony. Hope you're well, take care.
Oh yeah! In Florida more people are afraid of the birds than birds are afraid of humans!
@@MarkSmithphotography :D
Mark! i am so happy sony finally recognizes how amazing you are! Another Stellar video as always!
Great video, Mark. I have an a7riv but also bought the A1 because of you. Can't wait to watch your step by step guide for the A1!
Hello Mark, Just say I do love your videos. Every time I watch one they just make me want to get my kit and go. Thanks for all the amazing little tips which I think are some of the bit I miss. So thanks. Keep well, keep safe and find some time for a bit of fun.
Mark, Another great video and I agree with many others here. It is well past time for you to be recognized as a Sony Artisan. I met you at Conowingo and I am glad to see that your workshops have sold out. Hope to have the opportunity to see you this year and that the weather is a little warmer for you this time. Safe travels and thanks again for all your tips and videos!
How often an Osprey catches two fishes at a time . .? Beautiful photographs Mark . Thank you for shearing .
Another great, helpful video. No one has helped me with my bird game more than you, Thanks!
Awesome. Glad to help!
Always such a treat to see your work Mark. Thank you for giving us the settings as well. This will help me in the future to know how to set up for this splendid shots. I have your book and the detail is astonishing. ~ your neighbor
You're so very lucky to live in such a location I can only dream of.
wonderful video Mark. those are some wonderful tips. all very practical and applicable. Thanks for putting this together.
Thanks!!
Wonderful Video!! These are super helpful real world tips! I would LOVE you to do a segment on Video with the Sony A7s III, I'm thinking of trading my 9II in for one.
Thanks Mark for sharing your knowledge about bird photography!
Great video Mark. And glad that the Z9 has given us Nikon shooters a comparable tool.
Great video Mark. good to see you enjoying bird photography. and i enjoy your images, great work
Many thanks
Un vídeo increíble, como normalmente nos tienes acostumbrados. Las imágenes son perfectas con una nitidez y detalle muy buenos. Enhorabuena por todo.
Thank you for the tips Mark!
You bet!
Congrats mark i am happy finally Sony has started working with you, just to let you and Sony know i invested Riii, 70-200 OSS and OSSII, Riv, 200-600, 1.4tc, 600 F4, and finally the A1 out of this except the Riii and the 70-200 lenses everything else is after checking out your videos there was a time and still is where there are only 1-2 good reviews on products like 600 f4 a1 (including the tutorial for both riv and a1). Its surely fitting for Sony to make you part of their team, congrats once again.
That’s awesome. Thanks!
Enjoyed this video and I always enjoy your work and story telling. Since camera tech is changing so fast it has been interesting as well to follow you gear journey.
Awesome, thank you!
Happy for you... Best wishes.. keep the videos coming
You are an inspiration to all; thank you for sharing your talents 😊
Hello Mark, it`s been really time, that sony understand and know, that there ist someone on youtube, who can really USE this Sony stuff for wildlife and is not only talking some things. It is so much worthfull for Sony to become you as an ambassador or artisan. Congratulations. Your work is (for me) mostly the best on youtube, even if Nikon or Sony! ;). PS: Hope you have a deeper look at the new Z9 :-))))))))))
Thank you very much!
Finally! Congrats!🍻
Hi Mark, I follow you. I was using Sony A7IV. Inspired by you I bought Sony A1. I have GM. Counting money for Prime 600mm. Hope to meet u some day. Best wishes.
Outstanding Video!
Glad you liked it!
Great Tutorial Video, and Information Mark! Thank You!
Congrats on the affliation!
Great information, Mark. I liked this! Cool hat, and can't wait, to recieve my book! 🦅📸😉
Thanks for yet another wonderful Video Mark. I use the A1 and have the 100-400m / 200-600 and the 1.4 extender. I put the extender on the 200-600 to shoot Black Shouldered Kites recently and found my auto focus was really struggling. ( so i took the extender off and the auto focus came good ). I'm just wondering if i'm doing something wrong. the combo with the 100-400 works brilliantly.
Another awesome video. Very inspirational for us ordinary mortals. Your work is what keeps me going Mark. Thank you. Phil AKA keepclickingphotography
Wonderful, even touching!
Most Excellent Mark, thank you for sharing some great insight as well as many of your superb images 👍
Hey Mark are you going to have a video on how your setup is on the Sony a1? Is it the same setup like your Sony a9II? Thanks in advance...
That was beautiful!
Incredible video Mark!
Good to met you, and keep watching your amazing video.
Thanks for all you do Mark! Question, where did you get you "Come On, Let's Go" shirt? I have a few bird photography shirts. I really like that one!
This was great🙏
Awesome. Absolutely love your content. Rooting for you to make it big
Amazing Osprey always love the variety of fish they come up with too ! Some good tips there ! Are you using OSS some of us sony shooters over the pond don't bother over 1/2000 of a second these days ?🤔
Depends on the situation. I usually turn it off above 1/1600.
@@MarkSmithphotography I've left it on shooting fast birds in flight by accident, I do wonder if it actually degrades the images. A video on OSS modes would be invaluable. Also, wouldn't it be so cool if there was a way to set or even disable this mode through our custom button assignments? I have one of my buttons set to "oh shit" mode if something should fly by out of nowhere, it's 1/2000, auto iso, matrix metering, zone focus with tracking, etc.. Now if I'm out shooting perched birds using OSS mode 1 there's no time to think if something like this pops up, you just have to point your camera and shoot. It'd be great if the camera could automagically disable OSS over certain shutter speeds or let it be done via a custom button setup.
Thanks for sharing Mark, your videos have helped a ton. Can you share the bag name that you are using in this video.

So great Mark 👍✌️
Thanks Mark. Good info. I’ve been using a 400mm but I’m thinking of jumping to a 600 with tele. Any thoughts ?
I like more reach!
Fabulous photos and videos!
As always is such a pleasure and fun to watch your video. Unfortunately as a hobbyist photographer, I can't afford the Sony A1 or Canon R5/R6 and now the Nikon Z9. So I have to rely on your videos to get amazing photos and videos of these majestic birds. BTW at 2:07 of this video; did the Osprey capture a bonefish? My buddy has a place in Key Largo and we go fishing for bonefish and it a blast. Hey what do you think of the new Sony R7IV with the 200-600mm for bird photographer. This option may be more affordable for my budget. Looking forward to your next video.
Good eye! That is a bonefish! First time I have seen that happen. I haven't tried the A7IV but if it is anything like the rest of the lineup I'd say it would be great. Waiting to get one in my hands.
Hey Mark, before you posted A1 settings tutorial I was close with settings but did not have the little green boxes on birds (not eye boxes but bigger ones), what setting turned these on?
Great info Mark
Great sharing, Mark! 👍👍
great a Sony ad !!!
About dang time... Congrats.
Thanks for the tutorial ! PS Could you also add ISO values to the meta data of the shots ? thanks !
Hi Mark! I am a big fan of your uploads. I shoot with A7R4 and 200600G. A quick question, can shooting in crop mode reduce motion blurs? -from S. Korea
The way Mark was handling the a9 + 600mm on one hand, I was like I better hit the gym :). I get tired of handling a6100 + Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary.
Wonderful video.
Marc... what bag do you use to carry the 600mm in? Does it just hold the 600mm or the 600mm plus the A1 attached?
600 attached to the body. I’ll post a video on Sunday showing the bag!
What book r you flipping through. My husband is getting into wildlife photography again and would love it.
photoworkshopsandtours.com/index.php/product/osprey-the-glorious-pursuit-of-unbridled-determination/
After watching influencers like Mark Smith, Steve Perry, and Bayou Josh using their A1 and explaining WHY they are using that camera I just purchased a Sony A1 and the 200-600 zoom. Switching brands is tough emotionally and financially, but I am looking forward to better Birds in Flight (BIF) images and eye-tracking. Now the big test...will the Sony track Dragonflies????
Actually, yes it does track dragonflies quite well!
Im curious as to your take on Nikon's new Z9. I know you were once a Nikon shooter before going to the increable Sony cameras like myself.
Oops I see your setup guide. You Tube didn't give me the notification!
Do you know what the real world difference in AF is between the A1 and A7RIV/A7IV (or even the R5)?
HI Mark. I recently picked up a Sony a7Rii along with the A7iii i have already. Do you think my A7Riii wil do good for bird and wildlife photography?
Mark do you use auto ISO ?
what focus mode/area do you use, Mark?
Sony A1 Bird In Flight BIF - Wildlife Autofocus Camera Menu System Setup Guide
Where do you film the ospreys in this video.
What was the app that showed wind direction?
Windfinder
Hi Mark, do you ever use auto ISO?
No
Mark, I know Sony is your camera, but it used to be Nikon and just wondering if you have any thoughts about the Z9.
I’d love to give it a try.
One question I have Mark: do you shoot mainly with your iso adjusted for wheel or on auto iso? I set my A1 up like you showed but before that I was using the exposure comp dial. So setting iso as you go is better? If so I’ll do that.
I think so. Auto ISO fails a lot. Remember this too. When you shoot full manual not auto iso the exposure comp wheel does nothing.
@@MarkSmithphotography correct, I’m trying out the wheel for iso this weekend and using the zebra. My wife is shooting the a7r3, I wish you had a set up tutorial for it, I think I have it close.
Hi @Mark Smith and Ken, If I leave the camera in Manual mode and set the ISO to Auto, the exposure compensation wheel will adjust the ISO ( and hence the exposure ) up and down. I find the exposure comp wheel easier to use quickly that the wheel.
@@ericbornstein816 I guess it’s tit for tat
@@KenToney Hi Ken, yes definitely just another way to do it. The only reason I mentioned it was that I stumbled upon it and thought others may find it helpful. Anyhow, have a good one and happy shooting….
wow
Are you doing anymore you tube video tips or bird experiences?
