Whether or not they’re unsure, 100% certain, or just 50/50, if you are afraid of a haunted setting, you subconsciously believe that ghost exist. That’s just a fact. If they claim to be skeptics but are still afraid of the possibility of something supernatural being present, then they’re in denial and full of lies.

I don't think, that the cruel methods where restricted to america. I'd say it was the usual way to convert "non-believers" around the globe.
Not all the priests were cruel, there are quite a few missions today that are maintained by Native Americans, there were a lot of people in other countries who loved the missionaries and genuinely wanted them around. Like in the move The Mission, or the San Juan Capistrano mission today where my family lives.

I have another theory I would like to add to the "Shane is an attached demon/ ghost to Ryan theory." Maybe Shane hates the ghost box so much because it operates at a frequency where demons are affected negatively. The demon/ ghosts who answer to the ghost box are forced to answer because it hurts their forms physically; see how Shane screams in discomfort whenever Ryan turns it on.
