  • I never understood what Jack the Ripper meant by "that joke about leather apron gave me real fits" until I learned that there was a guy who lived in the area, a bootmaker named John Pizer and nicknamed "Leather Apron" who was reported to have threatened several prostitutes and was being considered as a suspect for the murders. He was arrested, but had alibis for all the murders up till then. So basically in his letter Jack the Ripper was saying "you thought it was *that* guy?! Lol"

  • A not so fun fact: With Jack The Ripper, many believe that all women he killed were prostitutes, the real truth is that only one was but people are more bothered about the ripper himself rather than who the women were. This was caused by the Police's Death Certificates, which stated the women were all prostitutes. It's kinda sad that they just blow over their lives honestly but I'm sure that there's existing books on them! Enjoy this info! I love this kind of stuff so it's sort of like a memory check :D

  • I love the theory that Jack the Ripper was actually a woman and a midwife. It would explain the anatomical knowledge that the killer had of the female body, and it would also explain how she could move around freely and undetected. Because of the way society treated women in those days, with the whole "women can't do anything," it could be safe to assume that there were no female suspects because they believed that a woman could not carry out these murders. I think that this is a really interesting idea and hope that one day, they can prove it right. Edit: It would also be easier for her to kill these women. If she walked towards a woman at night, then the victim might not think much of it and it would be easier to get closer to them to kill fast and undetected.

  • I actually wonder if Jack the Ripper was a guy from Hamilton, Canada, my hometown. I read about this potential suspect a while ago. There was a fellow who was English-born and tended to visit his home in London during the summer. Other times he lived in Hamilton. This chap was wealthier, obviously, since he had two houses, and this was because he was in fact a doctor. In Spring 1888, a prostitute was found in a back alley in a sketchy part of town with her throat slashed in much the same fashion. I’ve actually been to the spot where it supposedly happened, and it’s definitely from the Victorian era. Shortly after, the police investigated, and this guy dipped and went to London, where the rest of the murders occurred. Once the police started getting really involved there, he used his evasion skills to head back to Canada. And in autumn 1888, another murdered prostitute was found in Hamilton, in a similar fashion to Mary Kelly. It’s also worth noting this guy did have a moustache. It’s not the most damning evidence, but I really wonder if that’s who it was. Wish I could remember the guy’s name. Edit: I got some information wrong, but I found the man. His name was Dr. Francis Tumblety. He was American, not English, but practiced in several countries after getting in trouble with the law numerous times, so he was very good at evading the police. He did in fact live in Whitechapel during the time of the Ripper killings. And he also lived and practiced in Hamilton at the time the two prostitutes here were killed. Another interesting tidbit is that he was once married to a prostitute, but the marriage failed. He was a known misogynist, especially towards prostitutes (likely because of his failed marriage), and even kept preserved uteruses on display in his home. I wonder where he got these uteruses…. Some ripperologists say he was too tall to match the description of the man the hookers were with.

Also, where he lived while at London, they found a blood spattered shirt. He had unsuccessfully obtained a sample of women's uteri during his stay at London if i'm not mistaken. And Anne Chapman lost two rings. After Tumblety died, his possesions were listed. Among these possessions which contained with expensive jewelry, found two cheap identical rings. Another commenter under his comment also said that Arthur Conan Doyle sensed the "Americanism" in Jack's letters, which further (confirms??) that Tumblety could be, if not THE suspect, among the main suspects.

But there are a lot of factors to consider including the surface (blood clots quicker on a rough surface and oily surfaces make the blood clot slower than it would on a smooth or clean surface) Also when someone dies, their blood pressure tanks to zero and they stop bleeding which can help determine if they were stabbed to death and died quickly or if they were laying there bleeding for a while before they died.

  • For the people claiming that most of them weren't prostitutes: police records from the time tie Stride and Nichols to prostitution, and Chapman's fellow lodger, Amelia Palmer, stated she was a prostitute in a character testimony. Stride was the only one of the three who was not known to still be prostituting herself- but she still had a past of it, meaning there was an association to it that likely indicates why she was targeted. Between them and Mary Jane Kelly, that means four out of the Canonical Five were prostitutes *at least* at some point in time. Catherine Eddowes is the one of them who did not have any evidence that I could find indicating she was a prostitute. *That said, it's a distinction without a difference; what happened to them is still incredibly evil and it's saddening that they never got justice, nor ever will.*

    @michaelbrooks3220@michaelbrooks3220 Жыл бұрын
    • I think whether or not they were all prostitutes does make a difference, not in the horrific tragedy that was their deaths, but in how we approach trying to figure out the killer’s identity. Only killing prostitutes is a pattern that gives us a clue about the killer’s motives and contributes to the larger psychological profile of Jack the Ripper.

  • Interestingly, a professor I once had told us that the police always knew it was Aaron Kosminski. He (my professor) claimed to have visited the Crime Museum of Scotland Yard, which is not open to the public and is only accessible by invitation. There he learned that Scotland Yard actually had solved the case: Aaron Kosminski had contracted syphilis from one of the local prostitutes, problem is, he couldn't remember which one. Worse, late stage syphilis can cause insanity, especially if not treated. They stipulate that he basically went on a rampage and killed any prostitute he thought could have been the one that passed him the syphilis. The reason they covered it up is interesting: Kosminski was a Polish Jewish immigrant and the police feared that if this was made to be public, there would be war on the streets with people harassing the Polish/Jewish neighbourhoods. So they covered it up, and the reason they continued to just let it play out as an unsolved case is simple enough: tourism revenue from people who are interested in the "Jack the Ripper" tales.

  • Good rundown of the case. I always think the “Jill the Ripper” and Prince Albert theories are so silly. They’re popular BECAUSE they’re sensationalist. There’s zero evidence to suggest the killer was a lady, but it appeals to those who like that it’s a subversion. And the royal conspiracy is even wackier! That one reads like a tabloid writer grabbed hold of the biggest contemporary name they could think of to drag into the discussion. In all likelihood Jack the Ripper was an obscure local man. Maybe a suggested suspect, maybe someone else completely.

    • It maybe was a lady though. Maybe a midwife killed some of them, who knows. We don't know for sure if it was a man or if all of these women were killed by the same person.

  • Another theory on the killer is Charles cross, the man who discovered Anne Chapman. He gave a fake name to the police, his name is really Charles lechmere. He worked with meat and therefore would have blood on him while delivering the meat around the city. His route to work also travelled directly thru the area where 3 of the victims were found. As for the other two. His family lived in that area and he would visit them so he has reasons to be around ALL of the victims. On the night of the Anne Chapman murder, the other man at the scene, Paul, gave a time that he discovered Charles with the body. When Charles was questioned, he gave a different time that proved he had at least 5-8 minutes with the body before Paul showed up.

  • at 10:59 this part can further tie into the theory that jack was a police officer because he could’ve gone there in his police uniform and it wouldn’t rise any suspicion because the area was already swarming with cops (he wouldn’t have any reason to fear a group of cops because he himself was one)

"Buzfeed unsolved solved a murder" or something around that context. Everybody please bring this to the top let the boys see this!
