    • Kia Mahootian actually, it was an unnamed private investigator that went missing. C.C Tinsley did not go missing, but was in the same episode. It was the Sodder Children episode. But because Tinsley was named, we probably remembered him in place of the unnamed detective. We basically created a fictional character out of this real person. This effect is known as the Mandela Effect, and other known examples are the Bearenstain vs. Bearenstein Bears, and Froot Loops vs. Fruit Loops.

  • As for selling the stolen art...In a situation like this, I would imagine that the art has already been "sold" before the heist. The buyer places an order with the thieves who then fill the order by robbing the museum. This could also explain why certain more valuable pieces were left behind. They weren't on the list of items wanted by the buyer.

    • completely agree. Good thieves dont take things unless they know how to get rid of it quickly for money. And typical fences cant really get rid of fine art. its not like in the movies where there's some black market fine art ebay. So someone definitely commissioned the theft... the randomness of the eagle made me think of that. Or maybe the thieves wanted a souvenir of their own from the heist after getting paid.

And it turns out it was an innocent meeting, the man was confirmed to be the security manager of the museum. Like, if I were to describe my own mother, I would probably only be able to help you out with her hair and eyes, cause how does one even describe a face well? Part of what makes it so interesting is that Isabella stipulated in her will that everything be laid out exactly as she designed it because she wanted people to engage with her art as she did and not feel like it was a sterile museum environment. The empty frames from the paintings are just on the walls empty. It's really sad. Also if your name is Isabella you get free admission to the museum for life.

  • Some inside info: not only did they steal precious Rembrandts, among them was his *ONLY SEASCAPE*, which is why it was so valuable. Also, Isabella Stuart Gardner was a fascinating woman who was very particular about the placement of the paintings, which are essentially placed in her mansion, so the museum is super unique. She left a stipulation that if they moved ANYTHING from where she put it originally, all the art must be donated to Harvard. That means that even when you visit today, the empty frames from the stolen pictures are still hanging on the walls where the paintings were cut out of them.

She spent her life collecting hundreds of pieces of art and instead of keeping it to herself she made her house a museum so others could enjoy it. After she died she ensured that it stayed that way by putting in her will that none of the pieces could be moved from where she had hung them. You can still see the empty frames from where the thieves cut the paintings out to this day because they legally can’t be moved. Granted it's harder to unload than other things and you couldn't use a typical fence, but as a prearranged transaction? Get your own guys to move it and it never gets seen publicly anyway, what is there to trace? In fact most of the art still missing from Nazi looting in WWII is suspected to be in private hands, but it's unlikely anyone will come forward with it.

  • To answer the question about what happens to all these priceless stolen paintings (since obv they can't be just sold on) - apparently many of them trickle down and end up in the hands of Italian mafia bosses. It's something to do with a loophole in Italian law which means that if you can donate or return something of value to the public, then your jail sentence is shortened - so basically big crime bosses steal these artworks as a sort of insurance so that if they ever get arrested they can get their sentence cut by almost half. There's a fantastic documentary about it on BBC iplayer (if you're in the UK) called "Stealing Van Gogh", makes for a really interesting watch.

  • This is such an interesting case. The security guard was definitely a person of interest, particularly because of the way he was restrained. Both guards were in the basement but separated and Abarth was covered in an excessive amount of duct tape. Was basically around his entire head. Another theory is that the paintings were stolen by the Mafia. It wasn't uncommon to negotiate lesser sentences in exchanged for stolen artwork to be returned. This is supported by the fact they took the painting out of the frames. An experienced art theif would be a fool to risk damage to the art by cutting it out of the frame. And it took them additional time to remove them. Another theory states that the theifs were after a specific list that was given to them by someone that wanted art for their collection. This could be why they missed some more expensive pieces and why they returned to several rooms. I also wouldn't consider it a victimless crime neccesarilly. One of the paintings they stole was the only painting of the sea Rembrandt ever painted. It's a shame that it is no longer possible to see it in person.

  • the security guard was a young man, only 23, when the 'police' arrived. the young man was just doing his job and being obedient to the "police." : It's automatic to respect and obey police officers. it's very hard to buy the Gardner Museum's saying they had a rule: "When police show up, if the security guards haven't called them, then the security guards are supposed to call the police station to make sure they're authentic." Oh, Right...That sounds ridiculous. Did they have practice sessions for that rule? Did they have it posted on the wall in the security guard room? So -what had occasioned that rule? Did they often have fake police officers showing up? no, they're just saying that to blame someone because so many important artworks were stolen. Because i remember how the Whole Country was awe-struck by the amazing ingenuity of those art thieves of the Gardner Museum. , The museum should stop casting public suspicion on the former security guards. The former guards should file suit against the museum for defamation of character that is still going on to this day. BTW - why was everyone working at that museum back then so very very young??? You can bet those thieves had noted that aforehand .

    @JaneDoe-ql7sc@JaneDoe-ql7sc4 жыл бұрын
    • I agree with this completely. Personally I think the guards did have something to do with it, this makes a lot of sense if that wasn't the case. Ever since I was like six they beat it into my head "Respect the police, you trust them no matter what" so even if it was again protocol, I would open the door and do what they say.

  • While I’m all for the steal from the “steal from the rich” theme, this is still a terrible thing to happen. As a current museum studies student, we’ve learned about how to take care of stuff like paintings. Paintings tend to be delicate and need specific temperatures, relative humidities, and light levels. Fluctuations of the these factors over time can greatly effect a painting, and possibly lead to its destruction. Also, the thieves may not have been stealing from the rich at all if the museum had legal title. Museums want legal title over objects because it makes it easier with regards to legal issues and deaccessioning, but they consider themselves public repositories. Objects owned by museums are Meant to seen by the public (unless an object is too delicate to leave storage). By stealing them, the thieves deprived the community of pieces of culture. (Also, please don’t come from me about museums being places of white, imperial culture. We have learned about NAGPRA and UNESCO laws regarding repatriation of stolen works in class, and I am fully on board with them. We also discuss how museums can become places for all peoples, and how to market to non-white communities. We are trying to fix this. Plus, the stolen works don’t appear to be Native American, African, Jewish, or any other sort of marginalized people as far as I call tell.)

  • Having visited the Museum twice since watching this when it came out, it makes it even more heart breaking. Nothing at the museum is labeled and walking around it is truly an experience. It's like walking through a history and art textbook. Isabella Gardner made a legal rule where if any piece is moved from its original spot, that everything would be put up for auction. Because of this you can still see the empty frame of the Rembrandts hanging on the walls of the museum. You can even see the jagged edges of where they cut out the paintings. The little edges of canvas still leftover. This wasn't some glamorous movie style heist. This wasn't a European museum full of stolen art. And seeing the museum in 2023, it's hard to imagine the place being robbed. It's in the heart of the art district of Boston right next to 3 colleges and a dozen apartment complexes. The security there now is so tight it's almost overbearing. There are offices on the top floor of the museum. But I have to remember 30 years ago, there hadn't been a heist in half a century and they were updating security. Not an ad, but If you're ever in Boston, it's well worth the trip. It's like 20-30$, it takes roughly 1 to 2 hours to walk through and see everything and there is a Cafe, art gallery, and a gift shop in the adjacent building.
