Heavyweight knights. M-1 Medieval - professional fights between armored knights. This is a kind of sports where fighters use to wear armor of medieval warriors and use replicas of ancient swords with blunt razor to fight each other. The very first fight on historical fencing had been held at "M-1 Challenge 50: Battle on Neva" between 5 times Champion of the World and 10-times Champion of Russia - Sergei Ukolov and American Mike Ivey - Champion of Meridian Great Tournament, Rage of Steel, 4-times champion of command US championship.

    • Probably just convenience. M-1 is an MMA promotion first and foremost, so it's likely just cheaper to use the same ring for both sports rather than build an entirely unique structure for the knights to fight in. They probably even hold multiple MMA fights and knight fights in there on the same day.

  • Captain Russia certainly didn't leave room for error. He took every opening without hesitation. No time for feelings here, hehe. Even tried to trip him at one point. Made me think of how a "knight fight" really went down back when it was to the death and for king and country. I'm sure Captain Russia would have killed him ten times over on those grounds.

    • Apparently they did do grappling (taking people down, and holding positions in order to better target certain areas with a misericordia), lances, pole arms and such were very effective against armored opponents, at least more so than swords. Swords were used as secondary weapons, for duels, or personal defense. There was a super interesting read about some knight who would go around challenging others, it didn't necessarily end in death, at least not immediately as wounds could always get infected later, but these were all friendly duels in front of a King. There was another account where two knights were fighting for honor (guy raped the other guys wife, other guy claimed the wife simply cheated), married guy had the other one down and gave him the chance to survive if he would admit guilt, other guy didn't and was killed at that point of the fight, which honestly makes me thing maybe he was innocent. Either way, it was an interesting knight fight, I think it was Jean Carrouges or something.

  • I perfectly understand that the russian folks who started this promote the usage of russian weaponry, but IMHO with arming swords and shields the fight can become pretty slow, and be the interest of few. I would really like to see XV or XVI century west-european fighting, with more elaborate (and protective) armour, no shield and two handed longswords, where a well-placed donnerschlag can truly end a fight. That would center the fight more around swordplay, IMHO, but probably make it more violent.

  • If you ever wonder why some of the helmet designs for the medieval armor had a sharp snout, well first not only to make a blow to the head with a lance to glance of but also when in close combat to serve as a weapon, the most vulnerable spot on a fully armored combatant were the eye holes. The same applies for the sharp edges on the knees and elbows, those were not put there as decorations.

  • The guy in blue needs a bigger and more rounded shield and he needs to use it as his main weapon. I see him holding his shield out in front of himself instead of covering his head and neck with it ready to fend off strikes and use it to create an opening in his opponents guard. The thing about the kite shield is it's solid and is meant to defend the head and neck on the weak side. A traditional viking round shield has a huge range of motion that the kite shield lacks and can be used more like a weapon to gain an advantage. He should be striking first with the shield and then with the sword. There are some guys on youtube who have made a very nice video on this subject if anyone is into historically accurate sword fighting. This is more of an ammeter display than anything because these guys look more trained in MMA than anything and are just thrown into suits of armor.

    • Hammers are not the magical weapons you seem to believe they are. More importantly it would neither be quite as safe to have people bashing each other with hammers for 20 minutes, it'd also be a lot more tiring.

  • When Sergey swapped his large shield for the small one and just started brawling it seems like he found god mode for the sport. Sword strikes get your points but they're so light, it doesn't look like the fighters feel them at all.

    • +Dalton Jones i can assure you... they feel them.

      @MyDaoust@MyDaoust8 жыл бұрын
    • Josh Daoust Sure, it's probably not nice, but compare one of Sergey's full-power sword swings which ping off Mike's helmet to Sergey pulling his arm back and clocking him, snapping his head back. His arm definitely weighs a lot more than the sword.

      @Thoreaux@Thoreaux8 жыл бұрын
    • +Thoreaux as far as I understand, the point of striking with the sword is not to cause pain, but making points, because this type of fight is not for nock out, bug for points: the throws, the sword blows, the hits with the shield and other types of strikes makes points, a sword blow to the head makes more points than a strike with the shield and I guess than a punch makes even less.

    @jjones0822@jjones08227 жыл бұрын
    • J Boogi It depends on the armor in use. A 14th century knight wearing a plate harness could easily weigh up to 27 kg or roughly 60 lbs.

  • Still not sure what tk think of this... Swords and armors are cool af but this seems a bit too much mashing... You dont see much technique, and the purpose of a sword is pointless xD Id like to see this in a more opurtunistic fight where connections would count big time + technique and not just trying to add points
