Every year there is a medieval style combat tournament that takes place in a castle in Europe; that means swords, full body armor, and shields. This past year we followed the American team to the event to get a sense of how intense the competition is. We saw major injuries, the kind of patriotic pride you see in the Olympics, and sparks fly - literally.

We do pay football players millions just to play in the games though, I'm sure a host company could pay for their team's equipment if the sport got big enough. $5k isn't too bad, considering one football game could pay to probably suit up every single person who attended at this tournament.

I noticed how fast they move in one-on-one fencing. The armor can tire a person more quickly, but medieval combat was a lot more agile than many people think. A longsword, for example, was only about 3 lbs and very well balanced.
Actually more around 2.5 ilb
@@namethefifth7315don’t know if you’re the right person to ask, but how did the swords withstand so much impact while being so light?
@@aeiou1738 because its made of steel wich is strong enough to withstand getting hit by another weapon. Its not like its a shitty plastic sword. Steal is very durable and lightweight when its thin but still flexible. Plus swords are made with the meatel runs through the haft so its actually part of the hilt so it won't just snap off
@@aeiou1738 its a common belief that swords were rigid, but they were designed to be massively flexible, to the point they would bend quite far without snapping. Combine that with being tempered and hardened and you have a flexible weapon able to withstand impacts and take minimal damage. As the guy above me said, the metal continues from the actual sword edge all the way through to the pommel, and the metal underneath the grip is known as the tang, which allows the weapon to take more impacts without snapping at the hilt. Take a look at some KZhead videos that show how swords were created, just ignore the "Damascus" videos and focus on imitation European medieval swordsmiths
It’s worth noting that the weapons used in BuHurt are significantly heavier and beefier than real historical swords. While BuHurt does have a lot of historical similarities, it’s definitely a lot more on “smash them silly” side of the spectrum since the goal is to get your opponent on their knees, and not legit kill them with with a dagger through an armor gap. HEMA is more based in historical fighting technique, but focuses mostly in in-armored dueling techniques, kind of like Modern Fencing but with more historically accurate swords.

That made me cringe
The only reason to make the weapons blunt is so if any freak accidents happen where a blade goes in a gap in the armor no one dies. Axes and swords sharp or not are not going to penetrate armor.
@@Sisteelin But how doesn't the crushing motion break collar bones and ribs? How aren't they immediately concussed?
@@Rucky888 That's why they don't use hammers and maces, and the axes they use are pretty thin, so they are for light armor or flesh, not metal armor.

A fully armored knight with an American Flag Surcoat. An aesthetic I never knew I needed
I have to admit. The American flag is one of my favourite looking flags in the world. Put at on a knight and you got a seal of approval for badassery.
Just wait they will be reared by the south and the stars and bars soon after. They can't just let Thouse Yankees win Europe to.
nah, knowing it has no historical reference it's an instant no for me
@@minotauruskt this isn't supposed to be a reenactment its supposed to be a place where you hit people with medieval junk while there wearing there medieval shit. If you want a history lesson go open a book.
The maryland flag looks medieval
This should be an Olympic sport
Jacob M. Yesss
would love to watch that
Jacob M. They should have a history event that shows this and several other things.
This is much better than fencing
Its wild bc this shit was literally sports from 1200-1600
I don't know where to start but I have to find it
Parents: what do you want to do with your life Me:
Live your dreams
Of all the things that I thought I'd see in my life, a 21st century knight with the american and texan flag on his armor, wearing a cowboy hat, was not one of them. Not to say that's a bad thing.
Carlos José Duarte Casillas tis be ya boi
*tips hat* Aye, We beat you to the moon, we'll see you on Mars. :)
Looks like some shit were gonna see in the walking dead now
Cyber Knight it fucking is. leave medieval european armours and weapons for ourselves. and go back play baseball
Faulokomo bitch we’ll own that like we do our ancient homeland! You’ll just give it back to the Nazis anyway
What do you want to be when you are older? A medieval blunt weapons fighter
Why blunt when it can be sharp
Blunt bashes heads
Excali BirB my group fights with sharp weapons
*cough* *cough*... You ever heard of hema? It's cool too, and more like real sword techniques :D
@@kenai8445 you can use real sword techniques in this too
If you're interested this is called Buhurt you lot might also be interested in HEMA aka historical european martial arts which mainly practices unarmored combat
Great documentary ❤
When you have 500hrs on mordhau
DODGE THIS YOU BASTARDDDDDDDD
*DOOM LUTE INTENSIFIES*
The dung covered peasant convention is that way 👉
Thy defense hath more holes than thy mother's Swiss cheese!
They do be playing mordhau irl
Where is the pommel throwing competition at the end of the week to end it rightly?
Tomos Williams hell yeah
Skallagrim!
Dear god, people, get some new material
Nah, steel is still the best for pommels and their swords
Making pommel throwing a sport is same as wanting baseballs be replaced with grenades. Madness.
These guys have skill 😂 love it! They need to bring this into the public just as big as soccer, id go to these. Now This is a sport!!
Best interviews where they drink beer
They also have a Twitch channel called TheKnightsHall if you want to see more fights
are we really surprised that England is really good at this stuff?
Shouldn’t France be a god at this too?
@@TroyMS06 basically every _white_ should be good at this
@@randompheidoleminor3011 well, only "White"people participated, so we do not know.
@Anglo Commando It was really weird they were wearing Eastern European armour and Germanic flags... Maybe the Poles were helping them out!
@Anglo Commando laugh in patay
The host looks like i hit the random button on Warband character customization
xD
Holy shit so underrated
lmfao
Lmao! I always go with random looks and after a while I realize that my character resembles something that you might find in Mordor :D
Nice haha
Now just visualized thousands of men with armor and horse and arrows fighting in one area like in medieval times
"that was a street fight! That was f*ckin crazy!" I say that's badass!
"What's your fighting style ?" "_*NERD RAGE*_"
Medieval combat outside the treatises and manual are not clean fights. Its quick and dirty. Following a manual or treatise depiction WILL get you killed on the battlefield.
@@blooperman1997 you are correct. I saw a statistic from a video that said only 15% of men in a medieval battle would die in the battle. Then 40% would die during the rout. The rest manage to survive to fight another day.
@@shockwave6213 It's all techique that's good to use if the opportunity presents itself. Same with mma.

If there is a Japanese team, I’d be disappointed if they aren’t samurais
I was actually thinking about making a team of smurai😂
@@Dr.Nantiwa I would love to join, I've been training with a sword ever since I was a kid, the one I have now is perfect for it
Problem with samurai is the katanas would most likely break on the steel especially if they are blunt. Also I’m not sure how much protection their head armor would give against pole arms. Edit: And yes there is a Japanese team
they would get smacked
Japanese armour against European shield/weapon tactics would result in hella internal injuries.
Mario Yamazaki would love to ref for this sport.
Beautiful, respect.
Knight, Captain, AND Cowboy. How's that for a resume?
Maybe he's also an astronaut😳
@@anthonyalvarado5194 might as well go for it at that point
And played football through each one,USA for the armored tackle,16 on 16 USA
Right!? I was just saying that to myself!🤣
"Sir, the enemy has declared war on us, they have sent their champion to duel us." "Son... What time is it? "11:55, the duel is set 4 minutes from now." *Walks out with a military uniform, a broadsword, revolver on the waist and an M16 on his back and a cowboy hat* "I got this, son."
