German Puma Infantry Fighting Vehicle is considered by many the best IFV in the world. While some things may be a stretch, there are some things that really make it completely unmatched.

    • @@PugilistCactus The Puma's raw speed on on roads is higher, but large tanks like the Leopard 2 are usually faster on rough terrain due to the tracks being bigger. They have more stability and roll easier over the rough stuff. That's why the Puma's mobility is impressive , it's because it can also go over rough stuff as fast as the large tanks.

  • Hi RedEffect there's one thing I would like to point out: engine torque doesn't matter. I don't blame you for making the mistake that more 'torquey' engine is better: it is popularized by car journalists who tend to know little about how cars work, and car makers advertise this figure fully knowing it's BS. What really determines how fast a vehicle accelerates or how much load it pulls is torque at the output axis: the tyre or drive sprocket. And this torque is engine torque multiplied by gear ratio and final drive ratio minus drivetrain loss. This means an engine with less torque can make up the deficit by using shorter gear ratios, but that also means they need more engine rpm to make up for the higher reduction which they tend to do. What's unique about Puma's engine is that it's unusually high revving for a military vehicle, in fact it's higher revving than many passenger cars. The design philosophy is to maximize specific power (kW/L) and power density (kW/kg), so the power pack can be more compact, weighs less, and consumes less fuel (fewer friction/heat loss). Instead the real problem here is not it has less torque than the Armata or any other military vehicle. It's that higher power density designs tend to have more stress and possibly more maintenance. This is the true reason pickup trucks and large SUVs use big 'torquey' V8 engines instead of a small screaming I4; the same applies to military vehicles too. I don't know how reliable Puma's engine is though, since reliability depends on many factors.

    • I mean, it does kinda screw it when climbing an incline. Gonna suck when the engine gives out when going up a steep mountain valley.

      @PugilistCactus@PugilistCactus3 жыл бұрын
    • @@PugilistCactus Not really, if the transmission is any good. You could go up steep inclines in much heavier vehicles with less powerful engines and less sophisticated transmissions 80 years ago.

      @grmasdfII@grmasdfII3 жыл бұрын
    • @@PugilistCactus not necessarily. The transmission does it's job and the engine has a more flexible RPM range than most vehicles. If you need to climb a steep hil just shift down a gear or two and drive with a higher RPM. The Puma can do this due to its flexibility. Most other vehicles use truck like engines that don't vary a whole lot in their RPM range.

The ATGM modules for example, and the laser sensors, and keeping compatibility with all of that means you have to keep all the systems in. Of course you could just take away the turret of a tank and reduce its armor, put the engine at the front and make an APC out of it. This is essentially what the M113 is. But the M113 does not have all the features that the Puma has. No real scouting ability, no ATGM, no 30mm gun, no protection system, no composite armor.

In the back there is still armor against 14,5mm. Additionally there is 360° RPG protection (CLARA-ERA at the front and sides and cage armor at the back) and roof protection against artillery bomblets.

  • This IFV video series should go on. I would love to see about the BMP-3, the swedish CV-90 and Bradley. Actually, the T-15 beats the Puma with it's ATGM system, where both Commander & gunner can fire two missiles at the same time and slightly with front hull protection. The amount of tourque is rather trivial as long as it fits into the combined arms role. Which is the case with the newer Leopard 2 models, as the MBTs got heavier all along. When the Puma was developed/designed, this was a "must have requirement" for the engineers from the beginning. Edit: I think the video was a little bit too quiet this time, I had to increase volume pretty hard.

  • Served 4 years in the bundeswehr Panzergrenadierbataillon 112 and let me tell you, the Puma sounds great on paper and all the official info germany releases but its something completely different in reality. Puma came 5 years later than planed, served when we got the first in the bataillon, at the end of my service we had 40 of which only 3 were combatready the production got rushed and they were full of bugs and errors, at some point we had one tank that could drive but not use the turret and an other puma that could use the turret but wasnt able to drive we joked about just changing those parts and having at least one working tank. The designers also made a huge flaw because they had to designt the tank after the criteria that pregnant female soldiers should be able to drive (i shit you not) the tank had oversize which made transportation a very diffucult task beeing overseized the tank route had to be planed very careful and escorted by police or the MPs, its also partly electric which means we had huge portable chargers and had to plug them in, in my opinion a downside overall the tank wasnt very popular and in my 4 years of service i barely saw them in action Funfact: Soldier Hauptgefreiter at 09:40 is from the 4 Kompanie 33. • Nah, they are Russian made. Most likely overcrowded with problems, even the PUMA still has, and tons more. The Russians are currently not able to surpass any western powers regarding military technology. That should not sound racist in any way, but it is an dictatorship/"communism". Everyone is corrupt and the production highly depends on bribe money and persons in charge. Complicated, highly advanced technology is nothing Russia knows something about or can produce on a greater scale, simply put. That is the main reason they still use realiable but totally outdated T-72s, T-80s (even as BVM) and T-90s. Their MBTs are as heavy as German specialised IFV (the PUMA is much more than "only" an IFV). In Ukraine, you see the full problem of Russian military: Not enough planning and bribe money. Catastrophic planning, basically no logistic making thousands of armored vehicles heavy road blocks and a troop morale that cannot even be strengthened by Russian generals - of which they have lost almost a fifth total. Believe me or not, Russia or more likely Putin, has totally overrated its own military.

If yes; to what extent? And doesn't that reduce the effectiveness of the vehicle which the company is developing, or does it depend on if it's for the country's army or if it's for export, or whether the company is private or owned by the government. If no, then how will the army buy it if it's a top notch vehicle? I think this is a lot to answer in a comment so if you made a video about this it will be amazing. Thank you

    • Usually a government or military force will put out a specification of what they want, and from companies will either try to make something, or modify an existing platform to fulfill these specs. Multiple companies may compete for the contract and their platforms will be put through "trials" which is basically a big competition to see who has the best. After the first trial selected platforms will go back for alterations and they will usually get submitted for a second trial. This can go on for years. Price may or not be specified in the original specifications or negotiated later.
