NEW Lucid Air review

2024 ж. 8 Мам.

This is the Lucid Air, and it looks set to be the biggest threat to Tesla yet!
That’s no surprise, as it’s the brainchild of Peter Rawlinson, formerly the chief engineer of the Model S.
Starting things off with the design, not only does it look rather posh - it’s very aerodynamically efficient too. In fact, it has the lowest drag coefficient of any production car on sale today.
That suave exterior is matched by a tech-rich and very spacious interior too. With an impressive infotainment setup, a large glass roof and acres of room in the back, there’s much to like about the Lucid Air.
It even offers some mind-boggling figures, with this Dream Edition Performance delivering 1,111hp and 1,390Nm of torque!
The catch? It all comes at a pretty eye-watering cost, with European pricing starting just above £150,000.
Is it worth that asking figure? Stick with Mat for his latest in-depth review to find out…

Meaning even if they could you would still need to take it to a specialist garage 😂 also that's if lucid even offer the glass as a part, if it's anything like the electronics and CE industry you probably can't like modern phone screens so you have to go to the non existent lucid repair facilities.

  • What people in the EV-industry don't get (at least in my eyes) is that we don't really need 1000+hp cars to make EVs more attractive... we need good range and a good charging infrastructure...

    @sneakprev1984@sneakprev1984 Жыл бұрын
    • Higher-powered electric motors are more efficient, it's one of the main reasons you're still seeing good range with higher-powered motors. Add that to the fact that it's relatively simple to extract high power from electric motors, and that's why you're seeing these crazy power figures. It's the complete opposite of ICE, where extracting more power is comparatively harder and makes the engine less efficient.

    • You probably don't understand that car manufacturers have done their due diligence in market research to know that power figures are important in making EVs very interesting. Making normal saloon cars faster than ICE supercars is an interesting proposition. Also it does appear that it is easier to extract power from electric motors.

    • It’s a business strategy. First, create an expensive model with high margins to fund the next, cheaper model. Tesla’s first car was the Roadster, a $100,000 2-seat sports car, but their goal has always been to create low cost economy EVs for the masses. Model 3 is under US$40k now before incentives and they’ll likely introduce a less expensive model in the next few years. This never would have been possible without the original Roadster.

(Not as much as this car though) and the sun visor there started from the roofline above the driver and was a bit like a shutter going down and then the flap could be folded down from that. In this car that would be from behind the driver, so maybe awkward to operate, and it would require a rail in the middle to have the blinds ride in, but it looks to me like this would be a better solution.

  • I really like the Lucid Air, but they're literally asking about twice what it's worth and I think that's gonna end up killing the brand before it gets anywhere. You're right, it's not luxurious enough to justify the money, and at that price point it shouldn't have any bugs whatsoever (like deciding you need a PIN in the middle of driving, or failing to detect the key fob that's right there in the car). It's infotainment system is also really laggy and glitchy, but I suppose that could be fixed with OTA updates. Also, to be fair, the Lucid Air Dream Edition you tested was never rated for 500+ range. Only the Lucid Grand Touring is rated for that, and only with the 19" wheels. And as with ICE cars, when you run the AC and/or drive like a lunatic, your range will decrease. Hagerty did a fantastic drag strip comparison of the Lucid Sapphire against a Model S Plaid, Bugatti Veyron, and a Ducati. If you haven't seen it, you should definitely check it out. That car is RIDICULOUSLY fast. Although, having said that, I think your "F*CK" reaction to the Lucid's acceleration was perfect. Tell us everything we need to know right there. LOL.

    • To trick unknowing people into thinking their cars are faster than they really are. There is no reason to ever measure 0-60 with rollout. It is just nonsencial because it is literally simply starting the clocks after the car is allready accelerating. It is just like doing a 100 meter dash but only starting the clocks once the athelets reach the 10 meter mark. Why would they do this? Marketing and tricking people. Tesla did it first to achieve their "sub 2 seconds" 0-60 time which they otherwhise would not be able to. Pretty much overselling your product to make investors happy. I guess Lucid started copying this stupid way of measuring to compete. Let's see how long it takes until someone starts doing 2ft or 3ft rollouts to "achieve" even better 0-60 numbers.

      @BarkerT@BarkerT10 ай бұрын
    • @@BarkerT Historically, in the US acceleration times are measured with one foot rollout. In this procedure, two light beams are used for measurement. At the starting point, the front tire of the stationary car triggers the first one. By the time, the tire crosses the second one 12 inches away, it triggers the start of the time. Reason, why I personally find it annoying, is, because it delivers smaller numbers which get often mixed up when people think about 0-60mph or 0-100kmh times. To add to that, some car manufacturers use this for aggressive, but superficial and misleading marketing. I am thankful, that journalists try to make measurements under clearly defined conditions. Except of course the British weather. That, no one can control.

As in all EVs the low drag co-efficient wheel are hideous.I'd gladly sacrifice a slightly less drag efficient vehicles for some better looking wheels. Anyway, the front (hood) of the car is no place to write a name, which means Lucid really needs to get an emblem. On another note, whoever at Lucid thought that putting all your controls into the infotainment display was a good idea should be tar and feathered. The basic idea behind any driver center design should be to make driving easier, and taking your eyes off the road to fiddle with a complicated touch screen does just the opposite. Not to mention you're putting all your "control" eggs in one basket with that single display. If it ever dies for any reason, ore even fails to illuminate, you're literally left in the dark. They at least need a backup, with an external plug or a send to your smart phone with the most basic controls. Speaking of which, most states have laws against using a smart phone while driving, but these all these infotainment systems provides essentially the same distraction, if not greater.
