As someone who does mechanical work and some aluminum casting, I am highly impressed by their use of safety flip flops around molten iron.
Not aluminium
I used to work in an iron foundry this blows my mind. yet every one still has their fingers and toes from what ive seen.
No its just like the old days 👍

These folks work far too hard in this day and age. They have my respect, all day long.
indeed, far too hard for a very mediocre result (at best)
Amazing work! I've always been envious of machinists, regardless of where they are in the world. Top notch!
They make them and none are harmonically balanced to go on balanced pistons. Yeah I don’t think the engine will last it’s life time.
@notfiveo SWARF!
ol, you have no clue of what you are talking about obviously, this is not top notch by any standard.
Obviously, you have no understanding of machining tolerances. I am a retired ASE certified master engine machinist. The tolerances I was required to use were measured in ten thousandths( one tenth of one third of a human hair), not using a ruler and a set of dividers.
Ring-gap machine guy has one of the best jobs there, and it's cool how they check the ring gap afterward, it's very important to get that right.
Very interesting multi step process. These men do amazing work.

You got to admire the spunk to work in that environment with flops and sandals. Industrious committed bunch those guys. All for a plate of food at the end of the day. Much respect.
sunak and co would have every machinist in the uk working like this if they could abolish the trade unions since thatchers treachourous reign wages have went up about £10 in 40 years unfortunately most of the old knowledgeable gits are retiring and no one to replace them , what a total disregard for skilled men shame on you britain 😢
@@eweunkettles8207 What a load of twaddle! British machinists today work in safe clean conditions. They have the best world class equipment, best on the job training and are amongst the highest paid in Europe. They drive to work in their own cars, live in their own modern houses and have four weeks of paid holiday a year. They travel abroad with their families and overall enjoy an excellent standard of living. Take your picket line rhetoric away to some place it might be believed. There's no way can British manufacturing be compared to the third world amateurish and dangerous methods seen in Pakistan KZhead videos.
These piston rings are for an air compressor piston 21:27 and in most cases regular grey cast iron is the material of choice as shown by their choice of scrap metal.
Cast iron is a great piston ring material for automotive too, very low friction compared to other alloys thanks to graphite stuck in its crystalline structure. It's only recently that cast iron was replaced by steel since modern engines are getting smaller and smaller but make more and more power per cc to beat regulations, and steel can resist abuse substantially more, especially when running it thin, again, for "fuel saving" purposes.
There are many grades of cast iron. A company once went through over 100 variations when designing a sleeve valve aircraft engine.
Even seems like the air compressor piston was also home casted, at least when you look at the last 3 rings the put in, when you get to see the inside of the piston But 3rd world country as we call them, seem to be good at repairing almost everything, if something break, make a new one. should that break, make one more
@@david929190 We have a company in Norway "Tizir" have over 120 different mostly iron/steel alloys to pick from, if you dont make a custom order that's not on the list, they make it for you fabric's over the whole world come to buy it, due to it's good quality.. Even the Zink they make here is amazing and that's Boliden
“Recently”? Try the 1960s. Steel piston rings have been used in aircraft piston engines since before WW2.

I think they put the most experienced guy in the last step on purpose. Right away after the first fitting in the pipe, he knows how many file strokes this ring needs to be good. Or it's the owner, so no one would be yelling if he fucks up his job after so many steps before... not even the guys at the foundry who risked burning off their feet to get him a product to file off.
😂😂 The part of burning the toes is tidiest 😢
I'm impressed by your resourcefulness and your skills. Thanx for posting. Keep well
These guys are talented and everything comes out perfect.
lol, for an beaten air compressor maybe, but this is not combustion engine piston ring, it is dubiously made, from scrap metal.
Nice work ! Good to see the casual skill and ability of these men.
The jet-turbine smelter thingy is kind of genius. They seem to be using electric induction furnaces a lot more these days. I wonder what these compressors are used for, I'm going to guess refrigeration with ammonia for food primarily.
That long furnace with air blowing in one end and flames shooting out the other end looked like a miniature Bessemer converter.
Wow! Awesome amount of labor. Very nice work.

I repair, restore, rebuild pre-war race cars. I make piston rings sometimes for 29 liter 4 cylinder and 50 liter six cylinders with huge bores. I usually go to a scrap yard and find cast iron pipes near the size I need and make my own rings from that. I like the way you do it. Is that cast steel they are making?
All that precision machining, and not a single digital instrument... Not a DRO nor even a digital caliper 😳
At last one product I'd actually buy and have faith in after so many crap produced I've seen (brake pads etc ...). This is true technical engineering and high skilled work!
well, you must not be well informed the, because these rings are obviously not for any combustion engine, they are only suitable for very low quality air or gas comrpessors, and even there they certainly have a very limited service life. Everything is wrong with this operation,, everything, from the material, to the operations to the finishing. You can see how the rings are not even centered on the lathe when they do the "surface finish". it is a joke.
@@lo2740 Precisely. The rings are machined in whichever fashion they fit in the lathe, one side they will be having thinner walls, other side thicker. This is pathetic to watch. Complete third world country recycling sweat shop.
have some looks like copper in the middle of the rings, why not see how it be done inside ? hope to see the detail process, thanks video ! very nice !
I just retired last week from being an Aircraft mechanic for 52 years . Your best friend is the machinist. :-)
Amazing work

For those who have no engineering background this type of piston ring made from questionable scrap cast iron is only one type of many & only suitable for slow surface speed, not suitable for internal combustion engines, petrol or diesel, nor for steam locomotives both require a different metal composition for high surface speed, the machining process shown has some similar activities to my experiences of many years ago making piston rings for steam locomotives for both valves & cylinders the final fitting by filing is also common.
I have a friend who has to make some 6 inch piston rings, for an old steam engine he picked up. Do you have any advice how he should proceed? He has a Bridgeport, horizontal mill, and a 12 inch, plus 15 to 17 inch lathe. Or do you know where he could get the rings at a reasonable price?
@@qwerty13380 I am unable to advise a supplier in Australia who will be able to supply your friend with his requirements, Being a member I suggest contacting the engineering section of puffing billy society in Victoria, they should be able to assist in obtaining a supplier, or they maybe able to manufacture what is required, some points to remember, (1) the cylinder bore must clean, parallel, (2) depending on age the cylinder bore surface may be glazed and will need machining to remove the glazing, (3) making piston rings from grey cast iron is not advisable based on my engineering training in the railways of NSW in the 1960's, "the users" as they were called were cast in the Eveleigh Foundry from a formula supplied by the railway lab at Redfern, I cannot remember what the ingredients were, I only remember the items used for making cast iron brake shoes, of iron, glass (silica) steel.
@@qwerty13380I've seen rings cut from old brake disks and they worked ok and if they wear out it's cheap and easy to just make more

This a Wonderful & Skillful Job, may be very rare in our Country; these components would be useful for Thermal Power Plants having Engine Generators or for Use in Diesel Engines of Railway Locomotives. The Metallurgy of Preparation of such an important Component is not Satisfactory, since there is looked no control on Chemical Composition and Other Properties, No Chemical and Mechanical Testing and Who Knows that what is the grade of Material despite of carrying out so many hard work and expensive operations. Thanks a Lot for the Video.
Basicly it's incredible. These people know what they want to produce: piston rings. I'm affraid that's about the limit of their knowledge. They simply repeat a proces "coz we always do it like this!" Metallurgy or Quality Control is way out of their scope. Yet their products may have some acceptable quality. They simply don't know. Good quality? -"Yes, sir!" 😃

cast iron is hard wearing and self lubricating , notice how the cores are cast vertical , and left to cool slowly in a pile of hot stuff all good practice a hand held PMI tester would analyse the composition instantly , i doubt the addition of alloying elements would improve the performance the ring must wear initialy to suit the bore after bedding in wear is very slow and will give hundreds of hrs service
@@eweunkettles8207 I don't hope "hundreds of hrs". A regular car engine has a lifetime of ~10.000 hrs. Professional engines (locomotives, generators, industrial) will run ~100.000 hrs without any problem. That is the point where Quality Control (and Metallurgy) enter the game...
@@richardhack9830 these guys would laugh at the paper trail that a typical q/a system would bring , how do you get material certs for old brake rotors and blocks besides if they wear out a bit early theres always more , keeps the foundry busy and a curry in the pot for the family yankee ize it and its gone
