Tremendous skill but cursed with a glass chin, that’s the story of many fighters out there
Watching this makes me question his defense more than his chin. Dude ate a lot of clean shots at times. Plus he seems to have had a very reckless and explosive style. *He´s no Paolo Costo but he aint James Vick either.
I think he took way too much damage training over the years. From wrestling early on to mma to muay thai. I swear he hadn't even had many fights at all but it already seemed like he did. His speech and the look in his eyes.
His cardio and striking defence weren't great either
I honestly don't think it's his chin that's the problem. I've trained on and off for years and I've seen so many wrestlers that panic when hard punches and kicks start getting thrown and all the striking defense and technique goes out the window. It takes a special kind of wrestler and athlete to adapt to getting strikes thrown at them without panicking.
west african genetics, quick and powerful strikes, cons, no chin, no endurance
He had an awful chin and his boxing defence did him no favours. Looked like the one part of his game that never really improved and it was his downfall sadly
Has nothing to do with his "chin". He literally gets caught clean every time lmao. Thats what happens. Even "Iron chin" Mark Hunt got slept by a guy two weight classes below him because it was clean. Damn these casuals 😂
LOL Awful chin ^^ You guys do not know shit.
@@vipr1142Exactly! Its called “the button” for a reason
@@vipr1142A lot of these fights though, you can see he catches the other guys equally as cleanly many times before they catch him once and knock him out. He definitely doesn't have a good chin and a good chin can go a very long way if you're halfway decent
His chin is one of the worst in history lol. Plain and simple
DAMMIT BRO, I never saw his interviews, seems like a real humble dude that trains hard. Just kept getting caught and his chin can’t handle it
Yeah , he seemed a likeable kid and had some skills , exciting to watch , its such a shame he couldn't get to the top.
@jabrone.destoroyah and he apologized to DC too and was so nice about ❤️🩹 I know he’d kill it at PFL or Bellator
@@steve10 his elbows in the clinch are absolutely vicious. He really could’ve made it to the top if he implemented a heavy wrestling game and switched to striking in the later rounds after his opponents gassed and have less steam on their punches
Never paid dude no attention while he was fighting, but any real MMA fan can see that he has talent. It's like he has mental lapses during the matches or something!!!
I feel really bad for guys like him. Hope he figured out another path in life.
He's a door greeter at my local Wal-Mart

@@tylerlynch2796 they said the same thing about a dude named Bevon Lewis lol
He was so incredibly skilled but his durability was awful. He had no chin and to be fair you can make up for a lack of durability by getting really good defensively. Look at arlovski he rarely gets flatlined nowadays or Robert Whittaker he gets hurt a lot but his defense keeps him in the fight. If you don’t want to fight smart at least be tough, if you can’t be tough fight smart. Edit: almost forgot brendan allen, man had a great career comeback after being knocked out by strickland of all people
I'd say whittaker Is more durable than we Give him credit for
Overeem too learned to fight with bad chin later in his career to an extend, but yeah Arlovski is best example of it imo
@@robertbell6217he’s durable in the sense that he never gives up mentally. But the dude does the chicken legs pretty much every fight. He’s just got the ability to defend himself well and recover
@@ogrimzyz8643 tbf the shots that rock him could rock any other middleweight.
@@robertbell6217 aye but there’s seems to be more of a reaction from Whittaker than the other middleweights. Except from Phil hawes lmao
Phil Hawes has the technical makings of a top 7 fighter, then he gets touched.
He has everything but if you do t have a chin you need technical defense am he dont
@@gaw862Dude, with that kind of chin, he needs nothing short of Ultra Instinct.
@@gaw862 Most of yoyu guys would get SLEPT with half the power of those shots. He does not have a awful chin, he just get touched perfectly...
@@Lolife86Nah, he does have a pretty awful chin. The guys he fight stay in it even after he catches them clean many times, all it takes to bring him down is one
@@jeizaher ??
His pocket boxing offensively was impressive as hell unfortunately his defense was lacking
Those inside elbows are some of the best I've seen , we don't see muay thai quite like that very often in the UFC , the one fight where he put his opponent away with mainly inside elbows was very impressive. His defence wasn't great when buzzed , he sort of froze , he often looked like he struggled to put his opponents away , he was landing punch after punch and kicks and his opponents were still there.
Phil Hawes gave us so many good knockouts. It's a shame he was on the receiving end of all of them.
If Hawes got Max or Marvin's chin...it's gonna be unstoppable. At least he should've learn the striking defense like Strickland.
I remember that Dolidze fight so well - it almost felt illegal to watch Hawes get put out after getting his knee toren apart. I watch most UFC fights and rarely do the violence put me off like that one... Such a violation
That shit was really fucked up... Dan Miragliotta is one of the worst refs in the sport.
@@saldom8338 Miragliotta is trash lol
Honestly a fighter with his experience level should know how to defend that leg lock he was 99% out, dolidze was letting go and Hawes just got lazy
I cringed so hard when I saw Phil's knee get destroyed from that leg lock. It was disgusting to see it..
Glass cannon
He fell in love with his striking way too much, and training at those old school Muay Thai gyms killed his chin, as well as the multiple KO losses in a row, He won a national championship in wrestling when he was in college, he needs to wrestle a lot more than he does. He starts the fight great with some slick striking but he does not have the chin to keep that up, he needs to implement his wrestling and I think he could still hang in the UFC.
True, That Chris Curtis Fight Was Weird.......
Why does Muay Thai Gyms kills you chin i didn't get your point
@@achraf9946Thai fighters spar hard ALOT. And that can damage fighters physically and psychologically.
Truly a "kill or be killed" fighter.
I personally never saw it in him to be a contender, to be honest. They kept talking about his potential for literal years. His best showing was vs. Deron Winn who was ridiculously undersized for middleweight and looked amateurish at times during the fight.
literally looks like an oompa loompa lmao. the guy is a flyweight with 0 diet dicipline.
Speaking of amateurish, dude fights like his opponent can't touch him.
@@madgavin7568not even look at the shots that put him down he has no chin most UFC fighters at middleweight would easily take those shots
This is such a casual take the guy beat Imavov whos a monster
@@Treyski4410 Did you watched the actual fight? Hawes just outsmarted a gunshy Imavov, who was also extremely young at this point of time. It was not like Hawes was the better fighter, he edged it out on the scorecard with the lay n pray.
Hawes with the durribility of Winn would have been unbeatable.
Did not expect a Phil Hawes video… but I can’t say I’m complaining
All the talent in the world, just has no chin. Sad.
I feel bad for fighters like Phil, he clearly was very skilled and talented but he had no durability and his underdeveloped defense didn't do him any favours
And no one thought Dricus Duplessis was championship material. You get guys like this crowned a champ before they even get in the ufc.
Tbh no one could have predicted that a single nosejob would make him go from looking like a drunk fighting underwater in the 2nd round to winning a decision vs Strickland.
DD is a weight cut champion, the guy is goofy af
He’s an alumni from my school and on our gym wall is his name for being an athlete of the week (wrestler)
Who in tf called him that??!?!!! Maybe the next Jones Jon
Jon himself was gassing him up
Yeah if he was gigantic for the division maybe.
The next Jon Africa
@@sethiddings7293 True.......
I like this presentation format, no narrator, no narration period, and no need for the youtuber to film himself talking at his desk
lol I never realized until now that the yapping desk shots are a staple of every youtube mma documentary
Amazing work Liam great storytelling
Bro what a terrible stoppage on that Dolidize fight🤢
😒
For Hawes to break his leg while Dolidze was literally letting go of his leg shows just a completely lack of focus and/or white belt skill level
Goddamn Jones just has that flawless psychopathic stare. It's absolutely mesmerizing.
He just looked tired in that clip. What does a psychopathic stare even look like? 😂
Basically Jon on more coke
Not really a downfall when you never reached great heights... Just because he got high praise out of his own camp doesn't mean shit. Look at "Blood Diamond", Izzy said he was the best fighter in their camp and that he was bound to be a world champion. Then he went 0-3 in the UFC and got cut
Yeah but hawes actually beat a couple solid guys in the UFC mans has rocked badly literally every single opponent he’s ever faced too so that’s always gone get you overhyped when you have real power like that
Only reason that dude was even in UFC is because he’s Friends with Izzy and Volk
Phil is different though he’s never gotten technically outclassed that I remember at least, just has a weak chin
Well i think we saw his peak potential, rough KOs
@@uncletheoneshotkid3001 True.......
"no hype"? what a terrible nickname but i feel bad for him, still seems like a beast
It used to be "Megatron". I think he used the "No Hype" moniker for the first time when he fought Deron Winn
ur content’s amazing bro, very insightful. this is just an idea, but perhaps u can make a video on anthony hernandez. dude’s one of my favorite fighters rn and it’d be greatly appreciated if someone none other than u made a video on him.
Great video should do something similar on will brooks, thought he was going to be a top competitor for a long time
His win vs imavov is very impressive considering the only other guy who beat him in the ufc is sean strickland
Imavov is mid-tier.
@@madgavin7568facts
He should’ve never changed his nickname from Megatron.
He has absolutely no chin lol. If he had wins Chin, he’d be the goat.
17:20 dolidze is a good dude for being so worried about his opponent.
Shoes how much a chin matters in MMA he’s as talented as anyone in the division but no chin
He really did have skills , those elbows were excellent, in that one fight he was throwing them like inside hooks. I think in the end his defence is a bit suspect, his heart and his cardio kept him up, but he is one of those fighters that get wobbled then just remain easy to put away , instead of grappling or shooting he kind of just stood there frozen. He didn't seem to have enough power in his shots , the knockouts he did get were great, but too many fights where it took him ages to finish his opponent, he doesn't have the hard one punch ko. He certainly is one of the best technical fighters I've seen never get to the top though , it's a shame because he would have been such a good fighter to watch in big fights.
What song is playing in the background of 2nd half of McGregor sniper left hand video
When he lost to Belals coach in pfl, I knew he was not gonna be anything special. Never had a chin so he was always in danger of getting KO’d
Do Mersad Bektic next.
I think more fans were more hyped about Bektic than they were about Volk.
I will always remember him for yapping at DC after the Winn fight. After DC rounded on him, I think Phil sweated more in those few moments than he did in 3 rounds of combat.
retirement is the next move i hope. as good as he is skill-wise he’s taken way too much damage for where he’s at in his career. hopefully he can find another path such as coaching, but i’d hate to see him get finished again
Can you make more videos like this? This was amazing
I mean yeah it sucks but man nobody HAS to fight nowadays and it’s crazy how many fighters this has happened to after entering the UFC. The competition really is higher 😢
It was very obvious to me early on that he was no Jon Jones, he had everything Jones had except no chin, and in a sport like MMA where even the weakest strikers can throw elbows or a mean kick to the head, a glass chin is the worst thing you could have.
3:04 that looked terrifying
Yeah that was brutal
Whats the song 6:20
He's kinda like Melvin Manhoef. He tries to overwhelm people with his striking, but then he leaves himself open and gets tagged.
I hope for the best and that he can find success elsewhere but right now he has to let his chin recover
If anybody played RuneScape this guy was a 1HP Dharoker
I never saw him as being such a great talent, very good, but not great. Hawes was never defensively sound enough to compete with the best. He got concussed in pretty much every fight against stiff talent.
I’ve been watching MMA all of my life and not ever once did I hear them call this fool the next Jon Jones
Respect to him for not giving up. So much respect for MMA
What was Winn even doing in there bro
How dare ya - Joe Rogan voice😒
his chin get touched once and he start dancing in the octagon
What’s crazy is he really has all the tools to be champ
except defending against taking a punch in the face - and dropping like he was taking a dive
Very well edited video!
Sadly ended like the next Kevin Lee.
skilled offensively yes, durability and defensively skilled was his downfall.
I hope he gets retired from contact sport . Obviously very damaged balance centar in the brain... No jokes Those were touch up's not on the chin every time on the eye temple and he doesn't WENT OFF he went OFF BALANCE
All the athleticism in the world, great work ethic, good wresteling combined with powerful technical offensive kickboxing, decent cardio, but has one major flaw physically and technically: his chin AND his defence. You can get away with one if the other compensates for it. Like with Overeem, Whittaker and Vettori. But Hawes keeps his hands low so many times. Gets in trouble unnecessarily against light punchers Daukaus and Imavov and loses fights against big punchers where he just can't get away with it. At 35 and being ko'd 4 times in his last 5 fights I don't know what his future holds. He definitely still wants to compete so he propably will get a run going in a smaller organisation.
Tbh Whittakers lack of durability is getting kinda exposed in his recent fights as either he’s getting sloopy or maybe his opponents are now able to read him
I get what you're saying, his defense/chin seem to be the issue but honestly from a coaching perspective his doing a lot of things right. Everyone's hand eventually drops so it's not the end of the world because you're essentially making a tradeoff of being able to see better and increase hand speed for being more exposed. At this point, seems like it would probably make things worse for his hands to come up high since his short for the division, he will just get picked apart on the outside... Regardless his in a terrible position career wise.
But this isn't the only case of a very good training partner having a failed career for sure , saw Machida the other day talk about Vladimir Matyushenko who was very good , always competitive with him but couldn't realize success inside UFC.
Some people have all the skills 361 days of the year but it doesn’t matter if they can’t show up and show out on those 4 days of the year on fight night
@@jocoolshow In MMA they call them gym warriors a semi-famous one is jamie pickett. Tons of great fighters talk about how good his striking and BJJ is but in the cage he just stalls against the cage losing a ton of fights until he got sacrificed to bo nickal then cut. We see it sometimes with geoff neal, some fights he looks like a killer and others he’s sparring casually dapping up his opponents, stalling, and not letting his hands go. Difference between good and great fighters is consistency as in being consistently good not just good in the gym
Well atleast Vladimir got a title shot
@@jocoolshowI’ve seen this before people really don’t understand how mental fighting really is. He also doesn’t have the best chin. I wish him well though.
Bros chin is made of glass
The next video should be Blood Diamond.
To say that Winn fighter has an iron chin would be an understatement.
Dude has beautiful fights. His combination of going for broke and his technical mixing it up with body shots and elbows. He’s a fantastic fighter.
I really don’t think his chin was that bad. Just had terrible inside defense. He could take a shot, he just didn’t block the ones that came after ether
You might want to rewatch the Aliskerov ko
Nah some of them definitely showed his chin is sus af, that Curtis and Hulk KO he was barely glazed and got KOED, even Ikram didn’t hit him with much power, Dolidze and Julian Marquez KOs were absolutely brutal tho
The most important thing you need to have in a combat sport is a good chin, Hawes had better striking, better wrestling, better grappling than almost all of his opponent, but they always found the off switch one the biggest "What ifs" in the ufc
Deron Winn literally should have been fighting at 145 lbs. Ridiculous that he was fighting at 185
I never saw it tbh
12:50 Somehow they managed to find someone shorter than him in MW LOL.
is Hawes short? wikipedia says he is 5'11?
Compared to other mws hes relatively short@@brianwarner308
He used to stop by my parents restaurant in nj while teaching group mma at the ufc gym there. One of the few guys who made it from my neighborhood
This is what happens when you put all your stat points into offense, none in defense, and none in movement. Dude was hella aggressive marching forward with a glass chin and no head movement. In ANY combat sport you have to have solid blocking, a sturdy chin, or slick head movement. He didn't have ANY...
"Gust of wind and he does the chicken dance"
The way he was throwing bows in the fight vs Winn was unreal

He seems like a good dude. Hope he doing well 🙏
His striking skills on mid range, footwork and decent power are really really good mixed in with decent wrestling he's a problem. But his defense whilst traiding or exciting was horrible and that with his chin was a recipe for disaster when he eventually ran into higher level strikers I feel bad for dude tho, only if he put the pieces together
