I'm disappointed by the lack of dodge rolls or guard breaks, or even parries. However, I am surprised at how well they are at avoiding backstabs. I just wanna see how this would fare when they finally bring in sorceries, pyromancies, or even hexes. Will they limit the amount of soul arrows they can cast? What about Estus?

Re-watching it it kind does just look like Mma dressed as knights. I thought you were purely reffering to the jabbing with the shield, which they did actually do.
magnasek Actually, based on historical documents, battle field knights and other combatants will do whatever they have to do to survive, even if it means fighting dirty with a shield. There is a reason why some shields have spikes and has a pointed bottom/top or even bladed edges around the shield. There are no gentlemen in the middle of the battlefield, not when blood lust often rules the day.
Though the way they used their shield left them open to attack, if those weren't tourney swords the fight wouldn't have lasted long.

+Nahodakk not if you have a jousting armor, or 40-50kg suit of armor made from tungsten that can take 500 solid mace blows to the head before you even feel anything. Yet an armor made of tungsten would shatter any metal weaker then it. Only problem... trying to fight in an armor that heavy would require extra ordinary strength of a powerlifter at 90kg and stamina of a runner so in theory a medieval knight would need to eat 10,000 calories a day. Using peptides in 2015 can do it and a 5'8 person at around 92kg at 12% bodyfat who runs all day in weight on his body

Suddenly everyone in the comments section is an expert of ancient combat and technique. How many people have actually worn a set of armor and have at least practiced sword techniques against actual people? Stop complaining that they can't do (insert attack here) because of rules. It's a game, just like regular MMA, it's a game with rules for safety. Go watch Battle of Nations (similar in weaponry to this) Go watch some SCA Heavylist combat people trained in actual weapons combat do not move around like the movies or TV. It can go from slow and methodical to fast and crazy in an instant. They aren't just flailing their arms around (though i do think they need to cover themselves up a bit more as far as blocking with that shield)
I doubt you have to be an expert at swordfighting to notice that whatever they are doing looks unprofessional as fuck

Fucking first normal comment. I am fucking sick and tired of those scholars who think they are fighters. M1 is a sport and there is no doubt about it, but I can see aggression, desire to win, full speed combat etc. If you ask me this is close to reality, not "safe play" with swords like HEMA or similar. Plus if anyone think they just stupidly bashing each other means you know nothing about real fighting and you never experienced it.

You know, recently alot of HEMA folks talk down about M1, and many of their points are valid....but damn, M1 fights a re a LOT more fun to watch than HEMA competitions. Besides, not everyone on the medieval battlefield was an expert in medieval weaponry, most were just commoners being drafted to war and whack on the opposing team.

One of the most effective techniques to take out a fully armored opponent is to take the guy down. Control him and proceed to try to jab a dagger into his armpits, neck or eye slot.

As far as I know if you get your opponent on their back it's an automatic win otherwise maybe they score hits. My thought to the people mentioning skill or historical accuracy...tbf, even in the medieval era you wouldn't be trying to slice a guy wearing armor and you would only finish them off when you had them on the ground, because then you could stick your sword through a gap in the armor, hence the automatic win for grounding. Also this isn't like dueling in the high medieval era there would never have been any sword dancing between two armored knights. They would have been more skilled (than this) with parrys and sweeps etc but unless you were lucky or had good aim you'd still need to ground your opponent. Of course back then there'd be a lot of maces to bash the helmet and head in but I'm guessing these guys don't intend to kill each other.
Get these guys as stuntmen in a movie for some really cool swordfighting that actually looks like it hurts.

How would you win? And the swords seem to have no purpose but for looks. You cant stab or anything or you would end up killing the other guy. maybe if they add blunt objects but that would cause to much damage. Its a good thought but I don't see how this would even work unless it was a battle to the death and there is no way that would happen as a game for tv this day in age.

this could get really big though, because of how many people love games like Skyrim, world of warcraft and other old type games. Also everyone loves movies/shows like Game of thrones, 300, braveheart. So yeah, this could do quite well hhaha

Benji Ward suck? you think the movies show accurate combat? this is two trained fighters going full out. if those swords had an edge it would be brutal. plus shields are more for offense then defense. nobody will just swing a sword and hit your shield for no reason. they are used for striking and setting up a sword strike. these guys are the real deal. knights in action. no bullshit sword on sword blocking no random shield blows for show. this is how it looked

2 people assuming i watch to many movies.. well you're both wrong. One could argue this as being a sport, its not like two peasants that have had a sword and shield put in there hands and forced to fight. What about knights that would have been aces at combat? Like you get aces in everything, flying or sniping for example.
Antonio Martin Absence of thrusts makes this not real enough. Obviously because you could accidentally poke someones eye out. Or even kill someone even with blunt tip. Please read the rules. They are not allowed to strike at the back of the neck, ankles and feet. Sorry, but this is in no way real. Because we live in modern times and I verry much doubt that there will be a real gladiator fight to the death any day soon in media. So all of you defending this sport for its authenticity - please just shut up and don't embarrass yourselves. :) I think that in real situation they would not go apeshit crazy on each other but rather wait for an attack, than counter attack and they would be much much more careful because losing means dying. Never compare a sport like this with real life fight. That is just dumb.

Blunt swords, that's why they don't use the shield to parry but to attack with. The swords could probably still take an eye out, dangerous and stupid. But yeah it looks cool...

They need to raise the stakes just a LITTLE bit with this and add maces. Just sayin' ;)
Axes and war hammers...I think some do have other weapons... I know they do 16 on 16 battles... They must regulate the weapons for fair fights...
It would be better if the swords were razor sharp and it was a fight to the death.

In a real fight they would be aiming for weaknesses in the armor and places that could be holes like the armpits, joints, back of knee, inside the face guard etc. You cannot replicate such weapons unless you seriously just fight to the death. I think in the old days that is the only time in history people could know what weapons like this did and how armor held up. In the gladiator days people saw so much. But now people have better morals when it comes to combat events. But some rich guy I assume in the future might hold a death match somewhere on earth one day.
+MaharlikaAWA These guys are wearing plate and chain mail. Realistically in the medieval ages during the 12th, 13th and 14th centuries, chain mail was worn by the majority of the soldiers. Only the royalty and the richer nobles were able to afford plate that was capable of stopping almost anything. In this fight they are limited to slashing attacks with their swords, but in a real war with a sharpened sword, a jab would pierce the chain mail. Against plate you'd have to sneak your blade into the few uncovered gaps. However even then, something like a mace or a even more so a spiked mace will work wonders against a guy in plate.

Peter Pan I dont do HEMA. I do not know what it is. I just know as a martial artist that such sport displays do not have the true essence of a combat art. But it is exciting anyway and fun to watch. But I find it frustrating since its just going to be points of who slaps who's helmet more times. It will turn into slop.
+MaharlikaAWA theres armor that cover every weak points. back of the knee is covered by armor, armpits, joints have an armor covering it. And the visor is made so that there are many small holes that you cant even fit a needle in for you to have better vision then a large holed narrower visor
