SUV Battle 2022: Back to 2000's | Jeep Grand Cherokee, Toyota 4Runner, Nissan Pathfinder, Pajero

2024 ж. 26 Сәу.
1 310 563 Рет қаралды

In this video we compared four SUVs from 2000s: Jeep Grand Cherokee, Toyota 4Runner, Nissan Pathfinder and Mitsubishi Pajero. The cars are supposed to drive through four unique obstacles with various types of surface: dirt, rubble, rocks and sand.
Traditionally the sequence of drives is set by increase of the torque levels.
Per lucky chance all vehicles are equipped with similar (!!!) BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2-s. So this time the test is only half-unfair.

  • The Pajero had the weakest motor and basically all stock from suspension to tires and it did absolutely awesome. If the Pajero had suspension upgrades and better off-road tires, this would have been a near blowout comparison. The uphill test showed more of the weakness of the motor not having enough power to make that climb at a further distance.

    @hippiebits2071@hippiebits20712 жыл бұрын
    • Yea but the Pajero outperformed the Jeep stock for stock. Interestingly some people I know who do upgrades do it as a hobby (off-roading club) whereas those I see going off-road due to work have the vehicles stock, only tires are changed. So I would love to see a stock 4Runner on similar tires do the course.

    • @@rameezahmed3637 Yes that's correct - I'm always baffled at how people seem to be on and off the power. With these Jeeps there's two systems they can have according to what level of options they're built with. The basic system uses the ABS system to cause same / similar effect as a mechanical Limited Slip Differential - ie. the wheel that tries to spin is clamped by its brake which forces drive to go to the other wheel. The differential itself is standard "open" design tho - so with that sytem you definitely need to MAKE it spin to then have it engage and do what you want. The higher level of drive system is the ELSD - Electronic Limited Slip Differential - which has a computer modulated hydraulic actuating Limited Slip Differential (I dont know if the brake lock system also functions with that system or is replaced totally). That ELSD is supposed to make spinning wheels un necessary as the drive SHOULD be proportioned effortlessly. The video says that Jeep has ELSD - but the way its behaving doesn't look like that's working at all.

  • Thank you for this video! We rarely have the chance to see such a "battle", in really off road conditions and with the same tires. Most of the videos are reviews done by unprofessional dudes that climb a hill and say they went off roading, but actually they don't know anything about 4WD vs AWD, lockers, AT/MT tires, etc. I was happy also when I saw you brought a Pajero, as this car is quite absent from the off road videos, especially comparisons between cars. Don't know why, as it is a very good car. I saw a lot of battles or vs videos where only the Landcruiser, Jeep and Land rover were present. No doubt those are great off roaders, but Pajero can stay proudly between them! Its suspension doesn't have that big travel that other cars have, but the traction control is so good that together with the lockers can pass almost any obstacle.

      @Kierdziol@Kierdziol2 жыл бұрын
    • @@Kierdziol Terenwizja isn't about methodical testing of SUVs. TBH there're barely any SUV whatsoever, because as you mentioned they're mostly about heavily modified cars or new, but pretty cheap ones. Diyas is testing modern, often very luxury and expensive cars that are not even distributed in Poland (e. g. supercharded Range Rovers and so on) which itself stands out from the rest. What's more he's combining pretty consistent conditions with decent knowlage about terrain systems which make overall content pretty valuable. That said from the consumer point of view I think it's better than Terenwizja which nowadays is more about random stuff than some quality reviews.

  • Really glad I didn't bought a Pathfinder. I love the look of that car and some years ago I had to choose between Pajero and Pathfinder. I'm happy I went with Pajero, as it is such a great car. It's true, in off road, a lot of times it has one wheel up in the air, but it's so fun to drive it like this. It just goes further even with only 2 or 3 wheels touching the ground. You did a good review, I appreciated all the professional comments and explanations and also the fact that you tried to be as fair as possible. At the first obstacle, after the Nissan did those holes, I was thinking it is not fair for Jeep, but then you decided to make Pajero and Toyota go again on that obstacle. Excellent decision, this is the kind of comparison we want to see, not some unprofessional guys comparing good off roaders but with street tires with street SUVs and saying that they are the same.

  • Nice collection of affordable 4WD IFS vehicles that most folks actually use daily. I almost purchased a Pajero with the Super Select 4WD years ago. It is good to see that it lives up to its Dakar winnings. Can't wait for the next set of videos on the FJ Cruiser, LX470, and what looks like a 2013-2015 LX570. If that is a 2000-2007 LX470, then you got 3 different versions of Toyota's ATRAC there. The up hill S turn shows how effective traction control can be in place of a front locker. A front locker would be nice but your steering would be affected during the turn. One odd thing I noticed in Toyota's ATRAC system when I wheel is that it is more effective when the front wheels are straight vs when it is turned. Maybe the ATRAC software is tuned to reduce braking power or the speed the brakes clamp down when the front wheels are turned in order to prevent breaking the CV axles? The Pajero's traction control looks very effective, even more so than ATRAC II+ that is in the 4th gen 4Runner. I wonder if it brakes at the same speed as "Rock" mode in a modern Toyota's multi-terrain select? More power is needed on the sandy uphill climb. The 4th gen 4Runner can be optioned with a 4.7 V8 (235hp from 2003-2004, and 260hp+ from 2005-2009) which would be helpful in the long sand dune uphill obstacle. Same with that generation of Pathfinder, it also can be optioned with a 5.6 V8. Pretty certain that the Jeep Grand Cherokee can also be optioned with either a 4.7 V8 or 5.7 V8. Sadly no V8 for the Pajero.

    @runnerxa@runnerxa2 жыл бұрын

The best performance was by 4runner, quite expected given its suspension articulation which assists the TC a lot. The star of the show however is Pajero, which despite having independent suspension and thus limited suspension articulation, managed to go toe to toe with 4runner in the first 2 tests. High speed on road behaviour of pajero is much better than 4runner. Alas that this iconic "that started this all" is no longer in production. RIP legend.

I have a hunch that the traction control was off, but not the stability control. This would mean there is still intervention in the system. Also, the jeep and the pathfinder are almost tie for the heaviest vehicle in the test. The jeep has much more weight in the front end being it is a diesel. • Definitely should have used the V8 Pathfinder. I drive a V8 and it can easily kill this course. They're rare but such a beast of a vehicle.

    • @PREDATOR Well I wouldn't say that but I definitely don't think he hasuch experience doing this stuff. These Pathfinder are one of the best off-road vehicles you can get if you get a 4wd. That vehicle can very well make it up that slope too. I didn't even find sh the video because at that point I just felt like it was biased or not really well planned. If you're going to test a vehicle though you can't use the lower model/trim you have to show what the best one can do because it speaks for all of the other trims. So a V8 Pathfinder would have been the only one to go with. I can do that in my 2wd V8. With momentum and breaking few things but it would get up.

  • Nice comparison. Two things come to mind. The first is that i think the nissan has a traction control system that reduces wheel slip through brake applications. But, you have to maintain throttle input for it to activate. I've seen Pathfinder drivers bypass this by putting a small amount of force on the brake pedal to send torque to the wheel that has traction. Have you tried this? Also, the Jeep is the second least powerful vehicle. It produces the most torque.

  • Looks to me that GC's QD2 is worn out, most likely the friction plates in the diffs need to be replaced. I own Jeep Commander with QD2 and know how that system should work. When it is in a lock state all 4 wheel are rotating exactly at the same speed. Once got locked the system keeps it hard locked for 90 sec. That GC behaved like it has only QT2, not QD2...

    • Yeh I was surprised, the wheels didn't lock at all. I've got the 07 wk qd2. It completely locks all 4 wheels, it should have crawled up the diagonals easy with the diesel.
