  • The Prado performed like the Fortuner when you locked the centre diff because the fortuner is always locked between the front and rear axles when in 4WD. You are essentially punishing the Prado for having a full time 4WD system for safety on the road. Toyota clearly tells you to lock the centre diff for off-road conditions so it is basically pretty silly to criticise it for your failure to use it properly. Otherwise it was a an interesting test.

    • Terrible traction control though. The same argument applies to the 300, lc and patrol and they didn't struggle

      @kichaa13@kichaa1310 ай бұрын
    • @@kichaa13 I debate the use of the word terrible. It is not meant to be used in such off-road conditions without locking the centre diff. When he did lock it the system worked as it should. I don’t know if the LC 300 and Patrol lock the centre diffs automatically in the mud and snow settings he used on the test but no doubt the newer system in the LC 300 and the older one in the Y62 Patrol are a bit better than the one in the Prado. But used properly the Prado system is very effective.

      @peterj5751@peterj575110 ай бұрын
    • I was thinking the same thing, why weren't all the diffs locked? They are supposed to be locked when off roading, not just for going up hill

      @uk..bruiser..4046@uk..bruiser..404610 ай бұрын
    • @@peterj5751 I would disagree, the same approach was taken with all the cars the testing was rather consistent across all platforms, start off basic and add the features until it works. the 300 LC and Patrol don't lock anything in auto mode (onroad mode)

      @BrandonHumphries-gy1gk@BrandonHumphries-gy1gk10 ай бұрын
    • @@BrandonHumphries-gy1gk my view applies equally to all vehicles with permanent 4WD as an option. They were all put at an illogical disadvantage to the vehicles with only part time 4WD because the latter never have a differential action between the front and rear axles. So, the traction control on all the vehicles with only part time 4WD were only required to deal with cross axle slip whereas all the vehicles with permanent 4WD had to deal with front to rear and cross axle slip. This is a huge difference when you consider that without locking the centre diff all the torque wants to go to only 1 wheel as opposed through 2. If the vehicle doesn’t offer the choice to lock the centre diff, fine, that is what you are given to work with. But when the manufacturer provides the option to lock it and recommends you do but you simply don’t push the button, it is being unfair. You may as well say the cars with part time 4WD should stay in 2WD because that is how they come from the showroom. At the end of the day the unlocked 4WD option on those vehicles is simply there for enhanced stability on sealed roads, not for off-road conditions.

  • For the Pajero Sport/Triton, mud mode allows for a fair bit of slip. The most reactive to braking slipping tires would be rock mode, which has the least slip out of the off road modes. I bet it would've performed better in rock mode than in mud mode considering the mud wasn't all that thick to benefit wheelspin.

An engineering masterpiece. I think Nissan knows exactly what their doing and this new engine is not gonna dissapoint. And the Infinity QX80 interior and exterior is MUCH better than the LX600. I have no doubt the Patrol is gonna look better than the LC300 in both exterior and interior, have a fantastic engine and be very capable off road. While all modern cars have their share of problems with the electronics and sesnors, the engine is in a house built by JLR, and it's been very reliable. Also, the ZF transmission is bulletproof.

Some feedback on the flairing with the Mitsubishi, it's actually going through the gears, unless you are manually selecting the gears, as thr wheel spin increases, the gears will change. Mud mode does that as wheel slip is necessary to get out of bogs. Perhaps try gravel or sand mode next time 😊 from experience

I’ve surprised a few people in big modified rigs out on some moderate tracks. Even if the Fortuner comes pretty close in the off-road test, the fact you can drive in 4H on sealed surfaces in Pajero, and that it’s several thousand $ cheaper makes it a great deal! You get the most wheel travel in one of the middle settings and that explains why the defender made had more traction during the last run.

    @thabzmoyo96@thabzmoyo9610 ай бұрын

  • Just as I expected, the off-road test is where its at. Like the ute test, one of the most sensible tests ever done with the only difference is the awarding part here is better & definitely well thought-out. Not suprised with the Pajero Sport, it really performed the best out of other 4-cyl here just like the Triton, if only you guys considered how it performed better than the better-equipped Navara that time. The Fortuner clearly is the closest contender but wasn't as effortless despite the lesser wheelspin(Super Select really does that to get more traction btw hehe). Suprised how the Patrol did but a well-deserved win tbh. Goes to show that despite the age, like the Mitsubishi, it is still the absolute performer 👌🏼

    @MiggyMndza@MiggyMndza10 ай бұрын
    • I think the wheelspin has something to do with the off road mode settings on why the Pajero Sport slipped quite a bit. The mud mode intentionally allows slip since that helps in thick mud, while rock and gravel mode is much more reactive in preventing wheelspin. In the given situations, I think rock mode or gravel mode would've been the more ideal modes for the traction control. Sand is also similar to mud but holds a lower gear to have more torque to the wheels and allows a degree of wheelspin, so also not ideal here.

    • The Patrol was a real surprise, in North America it's generally regarded as an overgrown mall crawler (it's sold as the Nissan Armada here), absolute beast of an engine, but with a nasty habit of melting down its catalysts.
