Ford NZ looked after us with not only fixing it quickly but paying for our accommodation while we waited for the repair. Still love the truck, great for towing. I get 16lt per 100km while hooked up. If I was to pick a SUV to fit into a budget it would be the Everest but if I had a larger budget it would have been the LC before watching this video, now it would be the defender. Great job.

I've got the 110 P400 and I'm currently towing an off-road caravan with a DO35 Hitch with no wheel cover, so I don't have the issues you did. Plus, I travel solo, so the towing camera is perfect for hitching on. I get around 18-19 litres/100km on the open road. Would have loved to see the V8 110 out there again. • Enjoyable vid - and such detail and hard work! Not surprised the Defender won. I have a 2011 RR TDV8 which I use for towing my daughter's horsebox and our local AD offered me a Defender 110 with the V6 engine - like the one you tested - for a long weekend. The RR is a great tow car so I was a bit sceptical at how the drop in torque would work but I was very surprised at how well it performed. Yes, the Defender doesn't have the RR's road presence and doesn't make you feel as special when you're driving it but it's a very capable car and if I were replacing my RR I'd definitely consider it.

I once owned a VW Touareg V10 5ltr diesel which was excellent on the road & usless on the land. I also owned a couple of Subarus Forresters which were brilliant all round 2ltr diesels. I currently own a Skoda Enyaq IV80x which is a full electric & tows very well & stable with all that low down weight its very stable & has loads of torque. One of my interesting jobs was contract harvesting from Roma Qld to Horsham Vic. Our support vehicle was a Toyota LC Ute 4ltr 6cyl, but all this was back in '87. I'd love to tow the Dyna trailer with my Skoda, but we don't have any in Ireland.

  • I have a Y62 and love that unit more than anything I've ever owned, but this video has raised 2 points for me. Firstly, I'm surprised at the SAG factor, because it's a common feeling among Y62 owners that they NEED stiffer rated springs or airbags to tow a half decent load, yet in this test it performed very well in that respect. 2nd is that the Defender shocked me with its performance, and purchase price and drive satisfaction aside, I'd happily concede that it's a better tow vehicle. Very impressed.

  • Did your Defender testing vehicle have the tow pack? If you enter the trailer dimensions it changes the suspension and provides additional features.

  • Had my eye on a Pajero Sport GSR, not so sure anymore. I certainly wouldnt be towing with these loads, but there are some other issues with power and braking that are giving me second thoughts. Even with a 10yr warranty. Great test, thanks for the amazing breakdowns.

    • I tow 2.8t with a Triton. The 8sp would be an advantage I think. Having said all that, power wise the Triton copes fine at typical NZ towing speeds of 90km/hr. It is working when you push it or there are steep hills. We tested the PS and disliked the soft suspension. Some better shocks I think would make a world of difference.

    • I've ordered a Pajero Sport GXL. Will not be towing a 2800kg van. I think the lesson for those vans that wobbled around and struggled with the heavy trailer, tow a lighter trailer or buy a heavier and more powerful, and thus more expensive towing vehicle. I have a folding Avan which will probably weigh about 1100 kg with some payload. It should perform better than the combo in the video.

  • Great overview. But what would be great n informative, is that to plug in a OBD2, so that could monitor all thr parameters such as engine oil temp, coolant temp, n gbox temp.

  • These 4 cly models especially, change up gears too early when towing. If worked manually I think most would have reached 100 if left in a lower gear and used a few more revs. Example, the MUX changed up about 700rpm below the redline and then fell into a power hole. Even a diesel needs to rev to get hp towing at speed and up hills.

    • I think people avoid the Defender not because it isn't good, but rather the reputation of the brand. When we looked at getting our car last year, Land Rover just didn't make the list based on brand reputation criteria (a few others in the same boat).

  • For quick engagement to AWD on the fly and/or back to 2WD with the Pajero Sport and Triton, it's best to try not to accelerate and use steering input,(Off centre) . I've found this happens a lot with my Triton.. Could perhaps just be the torque sensing not allowing the front end to connect effectively.

  • Great Video. One thing to add to the video would have been reversing, Maneuverability and vision from mirrors with larger trailers. I currently own a D300 110 Defender and tow a car on a trailer regularly. Have to agree with the comments. I've never had an issue with the tow hitch hitting the rear wheel though. A Handy point with the Air suspension for long tail trailers, being able to lower the Car (raising the rear of the trailer) when negotiating steep approach angles to reverse up steep drive ways. This is priceless. Prior to the Defender, I towed with a Skoda Kodiaq RS (diesel version) and I have to say it towed even better than the Defender (particularly in reversing maneuvers) Vision from the side mirrors was excellent and torque and economy for a little 4 Cylinder it was amazing even accelerating when overtaking up some of the inclines of the Hume Highway back from Golborne into Sydney and an average fuel economy under for 10L/100km round trip Sydney --> Marulan and back. Great Video.

  • Hi Great test and nice engineering approach. I have found it very difficult to find information such as the GVM, payload, GCM etc for many vehicles. It doesn't seem to be easily findable on the manufacturers' websites. Are you able to somehow advise the information for each of the 4WDs that you tested. This is an important safety issue, and I think the industry doesn't take it seriously.

  • The new landcruiser Prado won’t have a V6 I believe, it will have the same 2.8L diesel and a few petrol/hybrid options. Interesting to see that the Prado is allowed to tow 3500kg in the Netherlands

  • I expected that from the Rexton, but the huge surprise is how woeful the Pajero Sport is, even with no load on. Wow. And there are so many on the road, surprisingly. Another thing to note with these tests, you have a 2800kg van on the back, but haven't loaded up the car with the family, luggage, etc.... There is no way the Pajero Sport could tow 3100kg, especially with anything in the car.
