I bought a wrecked Mclaren 720s from Amsterdam in hopes to rebuild it for myself. After i got it back to the UK Mclaren said it wasnt possible to repair the damage to so i was forced to buy a new carbon tub. Richard Hammond didnt think i could get the car back on the road before Christmas and i want to prove him wrong but after rebuilding it and attempting to drive it another huge problem occured!

Man, your dad is oviously having the time of his life. He is probably the proudest dad this side of the Atlantic. Cherish the time you spend with him. Really touching to see him smile from the bottom of his heart.
i love when he just busts up laughing
Im a bit old, and seeing Father and son enjoying time together, sharing a common interest is heart warming... Makes me wish I had that type of relationship with my pop when he was alive.
Mate I'd cut my losses and strip it for spares to sell on. Slowly becoming a moneypit
you nailed it
@@dazzbedford68 hes making loads of money making these videos on it though
I work for Mclaren as a Technician. If you fill all 8L into the engine in one go during an oil change it will overflow internally and cause a smoke show. Start with 6.5L then run it and go through the top up procedure.
😃
Does the 720s handbrake pads activate to help with cornering?
So glad it wasn't a head gasket
No matter how bad a situation is, Mats Dad is ALWAYS laughing. That‘s so inspiring! I like this man sooooo much!
That's because he isn't paying for any of it 😂
Legendary. Awesome to see a father and son work together like this. I work with my dad 6 days a week and I’ll cherish this forever.
It means more content so more money, so you'll obviously laugh at that.
And also he is funny AF 😂😂
Even if the car was fully functional, it wouldn't go into gear if the front latch is unlashed (common issue with the mclaren). If you want to bypass this issue - keep the brake pedal fully depressed and hold the drive (d) selector for 20 sec and it would shift to 1st gear allowing you to move.
Needs to be pinned

Another brilliant video that smoke dnt look to clever tho🤦🏻♂️
Its not only only the bonnet its also the doors for mclaren. They need to be connected/ shorted most times we did work.
Matt check the oil drains from the turbos, there could be an issue with them draining oil back to the sump, this will send oil straight past the turbo seals in to the exhaust. I worked on the 570’s GT4 cars, we blew an engine in qualifying at donington, we fitted a new engine over night from the mclaren spares truck, they had left a bung in one of the turbo drains, the smoke we got was 10x worse than what’s coming from your car. It could also just be the turbo seals. Hope this helps
If you take a turbo off check in the exhaust prior to it, if there’s no oil in it then that’s your issue
Maybe check that all crankcase ventilation pipes and valves are on the right way around.
That can also explain why the oil filler cap flew off
@@kobusbotes9775exactly what I was thinking
@@kobusbotes9775 thinking a bit more, if there’s too much crank case pressure this could stop the oil draining back, I reckon there’s been oil sat in the bottom of the engine which initially caused an increase in crank case pressure, and forced a load of oil past the seals.
For me as a McLaren technician it is very interesting but kind of a pain to watch you rebuild, or try to rebuild the car. There's so much I would love to tell you how to do different or where you forgot to put in screws or bolted something in the wrong way. Just for example, looks like you forgot the screw of the 'last interior part' from behind? But anyways I will keep watching and just hope you will get it running again! (Try holding down D button when engine is running for around 10 seconds, works wonders sometimes)
It is very cool that you are sharing tips as a McLaren tech.
@@billwoolmer8495apparently a McLaren technician yes.

I Love how Tony just Laughs. Nothing gets this man down. 😂
He reminds me of South Africans. Rolling blackouts funny, gonna run out of water.. laughs again 😂they laugh at everything
Me too and I would have laughed if it wasn't my engine too😂 Afterall Mat got the cash for it so no problem laughing then 😂
Money talks, more views more money for fixing it
Not his money 😂
@skyhigheagleer6 no, he can certainly splash the cash, and it makes good content
Looks like the oil drains on the turbos might be kinked or not positioned correctly. You'll smoke like that at idle and free revving since the oil has no where to go and it just goes through the seals. Good luck!
This!!!! Also the oil gets into the turbos and creates a puddle over time which looks exactly like what’s happening here.
Yep, totally agree......start looking at the turbos and the oil lines Mat as it may not be quite as bad as you think.
I love how matt's dad has such a positive vibe even in the bad moments
hi mat, you probably would already have checked it by now. but double check the oil level of the engine. if you have too much oil in the dry sump system the turbo's have difficulty draining back into the sump causing too high of a oil pressure in the drain line, causing it to poor oil past the seal in the turbo's
Well that was a bit unexpected..., but still need to beat Hammond
Zollotech when ever i buy an apple product i watch you first i love your vids and lets hope mat can fix the mclaren

@dovlatheman8344 shame you can't fix an iPhone like the mclaren. The iPhone would just disable things like true tone, if you change the screen yourself lmao.
I reckon by now, Mat must be the nation's best qualified luxury sports car mechanic. These things are so complex, but he (and his dad and team) always take it in their stride. Inspiring and remarkable.

Found you on YT and i am adicted to your work and how you manage to work yourself up..Respect dude.!!..Keep up the good work and nice video's.!
You could easily straighten the existing rear struts, I have done it many times. I believe the turbos on the 720 have liquid cooled center sections so a damaged turbo could allow coolant into the exhaust.
I would say that's a possibility if it was out of one bank only, but being both it is more likely to be the crankcase breather system if its not the rings that have gone
@@jamiebarber4675 That doesn't really look like smoke caused by the burning of oil in the combustion chamber. It seems like the vast majority of exotic car power trains are fragile and temperamental. The parts prices from exotic car manufacturers is outrageous as there is absolutely no reason for it. A great example is the front marker lights for a Lamborghini Diablo, they sell for over $1200 a pair and they are borrowed from the Suzuki Samurai and those are $20 a pair. The Alternator for a Testarossa is well over $1200 from Ferrari and it was borrowed from the 1985 Corvette and can be purchased from any auto parts store for $120.
I second the breather pipe being a filthy clogged up tarry mess. Otherwise, the oil pump filter...
Looks to me as if the turbos are leaking oil into the exhaust system, engine sounds fine... Good luck Mat! Another amazing video!
Than the smoke would be blue. Now its white condensation/steam
Also intercooler is dry
That's not oil, that's water/coolant, oil smoke is blue.
Could still be turbos if their water cooled and a seals gone
Maybe vacume to crank case vacumum system or check valves
I'm not a huge car fan or mechanical, but will pull anything else apart to repair so understand your frustration altho your on another level! I love your charisma and positive attitude very inspiring and love to watch! Keep it up, thanks!

Way to go Mat and team on getting it this far! Looks like another engine to take out and fix, you got this! 💪
MATT My Twin Turbo 335i DID THIS AFTER SITTING FOR 8 Months and not running at all. I ran the car for about 20 minutes (OUTSIDE) and let all the oil and fuel and water work it's way out of the turbos and exhaust. It billowed HUGE AMOUNTS OF WHITE SMOKE for about 15 minutes then started to clear out and slowly but surely it became clean and clear!!! Just let the car run for a while and wait and see if it clears up. It could be just fuel and water etc in the system needing to burn off!!! THAT WAS THREE YEARS AGO and now I have a 600 HP car that runs perfectly! No engine rebuild nothing!! Just let her run off!!!
"daylight robbery, PANTS DOWN!" 🤣😂
Mat it is always entertaining without being stupid like some other KZheadrs. You are a hands on problem solver like a lot of us which is refreshing. Looking forward to the journey.
I agree! Tho it maybe wasnt smart to keep revving with so much smoke 😅
Matt are you sure you checked the ECU . Scan it.. OK lots of smoke.. but... if the ecu ain't knowing this engine the ecu has to relearn all the mixture settings... the engine didn't rattle did it? Running extremely rich? It starts easy. So I don't think it's Ll doom and gloom. I think you could need to recode everything... Try scanning the OBD with your scanner.
Or a shot turbo
Don't give up Mat! The engine sounds good enough. Have you checked the crankcase ventilation system for blockages or nipped tubes?
I love your positivity Matt. Bloody inspirational. For mine this is my favourite uTube channel...by a long way..!! Looking forward to the next instalment.
The work ethic of Matt and his crew is insane!
I’m feeling ya Matty Check the turbos aren’t Very Bad first. Work it out before pulling the motor Love your work brother
Awesome video Mat! Not usually one to comment, but I've had a similar issue before, with a similar amount of smoke. Others have said Turbos here (which I think also could be a potential), I'd also check the PCV/CCV system as if they properly go, then they can throw that much oil into the intake system (at least it looks like maybe it's oil to me?)
You and your Dad still laugh and have so much fun even when the engine may be blown …..love the contagious laughter 👍🏻
Matt you are a huge inspiration to us all and a major reason I finally started my KZhead channel. Been here since the wrecked TT and have loved watching your growth so much. Bummed I didn't get to meet you at SEMA, but excited to keep watching your journey. Thanks for the inspiration 🙏🏻
I love how your dad turns a "engine very bad" incident into a hilarious laughing moment!! 🤣
Discovered this channel a few weeks ago. Massive respect for the amount of technical knowledge and determination! Funny to see you laugh at all the smoke where I would be definately crying.
You have a lot to catch up. Watch them all from the start in order!
Love how you can smile and stay positive in these situations! Amazing work and content
I'm sure you'll get the engine sorted, but please have proper ventilation in your unit to allow the exhaust gases to escape!
Firstly I will say, I absolutely love these videos over the years and the optimism even when things are not going your way is so admirable! With regards to the gearbox issue - I am far from a mechanic but a small thing I will mention - my friend has 2022 M4 Competition and it would have an issue where when reversing out of his driveway, it would randomly decide to not select a gear or when turning around it would get stuck in neutral. After 10 months of diagnostics it turned out to be a faulty seatbelt sensor as the car would not select a gear if the seatbelt was not "on" (plugged in). Would it be possible that your car is not selecting a gear because the pyro fuse/ airbags have gone off like you said earlier in the video, and the seatbelts need to be sent off to be reset? I could be wrong, but worth a mention! All the best and I look forward to the next one!
Yea, actual faults can sometimes be something totally unrelated to the "problem". I had an ABS/ESP light on on my Peugeot a few years ago, and the dealer wanted to replace the ABS pump for £1,000, even though the ABS was working fine, so I ran away, quickly. I eventually figured out that the problem was a stuck EGR. Basically the car didn't know the position of the EGR valve, so it couldn't calculate a torque value; which was needed for the ESP system to work. And the previous owner had blocked the EGR and deleted the parts of the code in the ECU responsible for EGR faults, so that the car wouldn't give any EGR faults. It was annoying, but it was really satisfying to logically trace the fault and find the problem.
Love watching this come together. I'm guessing you've already checked it, but I remember VTuned's 720S smoking a lot and it turned out that it was just overfilled with oil.
Mat the brilliant way you film and narrate reassembly is one reason why you have grown this mega channel.
Cheers for making these videos Mat currently in hospital and it’s helped me take my mind off a few things so I appreciate it 👍

The reason why it's not going into gear is probably because there is no doors connected so the car's computer thinks they are open so wont go into gear think I heard them say this on a dde video during there 720 rebuild. have everything crossed that the engine is still good🤞🤞 love your videos buddy keep up the great work ❤💪
It’s definitely that or the hood being off
@@natedostalik3538 Yeah totally agree 👍
Simply the best quality content on youtube, love it! Mat and Tony we salute you!
I was amazed by the syspension beause that was my thesis in 1999. The whole idea was to do what citroen did in Xanthia without the need of a pump. We also built a 1:2 model of a car with dumpers connected that way. Instead of electrical valves we used manually adjusted flow control valves. We have also connected the front with the back so when you break and the car tries to lean forward the whole system tried to keep the car fully parallel to the ground giving extra stubility by pushing the rear wheels to the ground, so you have more grip. It is nice that some ideas are not left in some piece of paper!
Congratulations Mat for how you approach your work.. thanks to you I am having the strength and courage to publish all my videos. Thank you so much ❤️
Your dad's enthusiasm is so contagious Matt even though you are going through problems on the build he keeps it 💯 I just love that he sees the light at the end of the tunnel
Hi Mat, i recall that either Vtuned or Freddy also had a lot of smoke, the first time they started their Mclaren after a rebuilt. I can't imagine that the headgasket will be blown because of a crash, i'am also thinking towards the Turbo's. On Idle, the smoke is not too bad, when you rev, those turbo's push a lot of air and smoke through the system is my guess. Keep up the good work, i love your video's and how you guys keep on laughing!
love the channel. something that might be worth keeping in mind in future is you can get automotive radiators recored which might be cheaper and better than fitting 2nd hand radiators plus you would have a guarantee that it does not have a leak
Might wanna check turbos. Not sure if these are cooled with coolant but many modern turbo cars have coolant in the turbos. Could also be oil from turbos. Obviously we can’t smell the smoke to know for sure which fluids burning😂. With no hydrocarbons in the reservoir it seems odd for it to be head, but you never know. Just an idea. Maybe it’ll help. Love the vids Mat keep it up.
Oil would have smoked a different color. This is definitely coolant

that smoke from the engine maybe disappointing right now but those things what makes others stop or give up but anyone who watching your channel are certain you gonna find a solution anyway and thats why your channel is truly great cause you guys never give up! :) Wish you all the best to find the solution this time as well!
They would know if the smoke was oil, because it would smell like burnt oil. The white exhaust smoke was almost certainly coolant. The fact it was coming out both exhausts (ie both banks) indicates it’s not something affecting just one bank. It’s extremely unlikely for both turbos to fail in the same way, and also extremely unlikely for both head gaskets to fail. So it must be something ‘upstream’ of that. Somehow coolant is making its way into the intake system for both banks.
Another great video update Matt, love the teams optimism and attitude. An expat in AUS and it just gives me a bit of home, thanks for making my day. Love the cars you work on never be able to have one so you provide a dream that for a moment feels real and exciting. Keep up the good work.

Well done for getting so much done! Honestly with all your other projects and galavanting around the world, I don't know where you find the time! But hats off to you and your Dad and the team. From the colour of that exhaust I'd say it's burning oil not water. Especially as it blew the oil cap off. I'd recommend you start with some compression checks. It could also be as simple as valve guides leaking, but either way that head will need to come off. Good luck mate.
To begin with there are two heads ! and valve guides leaking ? are you serieus ?
@@rudiknapen4867 No, but I might be serious. Plenty of smoke can come from the head (or heads) through the valve gear.

Fantastic Work there Mat, I am body shop trained since 1989 . I haven't see that level of commitment for many years, keep up the good work.
Try bypassing the oil / coolant feeds to the turbos. If the charge cooler is dry, I’d guess whatever it is that’s making the smoke (looks like oil smoke to me) is getting into the exhaust through the turbines. Good luck, peace out and thanks for the awesome channel, don’t stop! 👍👍👍
I thought that too, but it’s very light colored and not to mention if it was oil smoke they would smell burnt oil and not be looking for misplaced water lines. Hopefully it’s not a cracked sleeve and just a gasket.
Its definitely not oil that’s coolant its too dense to be oil
Both turbos would not fail at the same time. Smoke coming out of both banks - does it have a water heating loop in the intake manifold?
@@TheSharkLX unlikely for both heads to fail aswell its definitely a strange one
That smoke is too billowy and bright white to be anything but water. I’m afraid he’s gonna be pulling the engine and replacing head gaskets. 😢
Matt. Check ur turbos could be leaking a bit of oil. Or check ur pcv/ccv system could be damaged and returning to much oil that’s being burnt in the system. I doubt this could be it but leave the car running and check coolant level if it goes down after a while if it running it’s probably cuz u have either a bad head gasket or a crack in the block. Really doubt full on the latter. Anywaves keep up the amazing content brother and don’t give up u got this. 😤😤
Had this on a Jeep I bought. Guy had swapped out the engine with one from a breaker and it did just this. I bought it as he had run out of money and considered it a knackered engine. What I couldn't work out, is how it tested fine for head gasket yet was quite obviously blowing out coolant. Yours reminded me of it. What had happened with the Jeep was his garage that fitted it had mistakenly put a vacuum breather and a coolant pipe the wrong around. That threw coolant into the turbo and doing what yours is doing. billowed white smoke, but head testing fine. Retrace all the pipes and make sure this hasn't happened in some part of this system. Nothing to lose but time. Good Luck - hoping it is this simple for you.

What I love about thus channel is its something any one could do. Not because it's easy but because it's just hardwork and being smart with budget. How he does these could be applied to any project, yeah we all can't buy a crash McLaren but it could be a small car or a cheap property. Get it for a good price and work pit what it needs and find those things at the best price. Learn some skills and work hard. It's a simple process yet so many think they can't do it. When I watch these videos I don't see a youtuber with money buying an expensive car, I just see a bloke working has ass off long hours fixing a broken car. I reckon he should do something else other than a car as a challenge haha.
35 years ago my first car was a 1.3 L Astra, I remember giving it large one night and it ended up smoking like that, it ended up being the head gasket. Best of luck with this one, refreshing to see someone so positive for a change!
