Today, we take one giant step towards finishing my $2,000,000 flooded McLaren P1, and that's testing the electrical system, breathing the first signs of life into the car since it went into the ocean nearly two years ago. We also take a look at fitting the bespoke carbon fiber clamshell once and for all, thanks to Shawn from Attacking The Clock Racing.
Wish us luck, we will need it!

His buddy who custom makes carbon fiber shells (who he ‘went into biz with) should build a second fine-tuned shell that becomes the final P1 carbon fiber body. Just my opinion

  • Laser engineer here. That is a fibre optic laser, done by (coherently) combining several beams across a fibre bundle (which is a waveguide, like an antenna cable) because it's one of the most convenient ways to reach high laser powers using solid state means (as opposed to gas lasers). Metal vs oxide habe very different dielectric constants which means that the electric field across the interacting surface is uneven and will begin to etch away the rust and paint (if any) until the reflective surface is reached. The variation of E-H field (and charge) at the surface produces a quasiparticle called a plasmon, which can further transfer its momentum to the next layers of the material which is why the thing is so effective. The Avro 100W is a baby laser, for heavy corrosion in marine applications we're expecting 2kW ++ optical (and maybe 10-50kW electrical) At that power level, the amplifiers will not fit into a backpack form factor, and you'd clean your piece in 5 seconds, not a minute. The wavelength is around 1050 nm, beyond human range, but you get to see additional beams specular reflections and recombination, and silicon cameras will see it well, unless they have a filter glass

  • This is awesome! I've been faithfully watching this series from the beginning and I can not comprehend undertaking such a project. I've been working to restore my lowly 1985 VW Scirocco (only owner) for several years and each small project I complete is exciting. I work on it when I can as a single Dad, while trying to raise a teenage son and finding a few hours here and there. I'm hoping to start my car in a few months and relive the 80's. Glad to see you are living your dreams through hard work and restoring cars of this magnitude. I'll keep watching in anticipation of the first drive!

  • At first I was getting frustrated in the timeline of videos being released, but after watching today's, especially with that wiring, I fully understand now the gravity of this rebuild and the time and effort it takes into rebuilding this car. Given even how rare this car and how hard parts must be to find, the amount of rebuilding that actually has to be done is astronomical. Might as well be building a car from scratch. Take your time Tavarish, and enjoy this process. I can't wait to see the finished result.

  • With vapor blasting you can adjust the pressure and distance you hold the nozzle to achieve brighter finishes. I've finished dirt bike engines to a shine with vapor blasting. 60-70 psi at about 3-4" distance for the initial cleaning, then 40 psi a 6-7" for a bright finish.

  • I really feel that this P1 had tavarish as it's destiny. I don't believe anyone else would have taken the time to do as much as what he has. Most people would have paid some body shop to do the bare minimum. Congrats on getting some of the process accomplished even though it's baby steps at least it's been the best possible process.

  • I thought you needed way more than a shrink when you bought this project but I have to confess you are taking big steps forwards. I would recommend taking the bearings out before media blasting the suspension bits (unless you already plan on mounting new ones) Same with the driveshafts, dissassemble and treat the parts individually before having some sort of protection added to them.

  • Freddie, what you get Rex and Jack to do is so hilarious, you can tell what good friend's you all are. This build is a lotta work, and it's been really fun to watch so far. When this P1 is done, it's gonna be so awesome. The sand that keeps coming out of this car after washing and cleaning it so many time's is to much, thankfully it's not leftover toilet shmoo. I work on car's when i can, because i have progressive MS causing muscle wasting, and my neurologist said that i have to stay as active as i can, because i don't want to go from a cane to a wheelchair. I have a lot of pain from a work related accident that took several surgeries to fix, and the amount of pain i am in every time i do anything is to the max, but you do what you have to do, and push through it. I appreciate these video's, because it helps me to keep moving, and to know that one day i will have my project done, and be walking. G-d bless you fellas.
