Desperate Lions Catch Crocodile to Feed Cubs
This pride of lions is too big to hunt only buck, so they turn to hunting anything and everything, even massive crocodiles!

This extraordinary sighting was captured on camera by Newton Mulenga, a seasoned guide, during a safari in the Busanga Plains within Kafue National Park, Zambia. Newton shared this incredible story of survival with LatestSightings.com.
Busanga Plains is a unique ecosystem in the northern part of Kafue National Park. Known for its swampy terrain that floods during the rainy season, this area becomes a hub of wildlife activity. Among the inhabitants, thousands of lechwe antelopes and large herds of sable and roan antelopes thrive, providing an opportunity for nature lovers to view these very rare antelope.
On this particular day, Newton's attention was drawn to the resident pride of lions, renowned in the area for their hunting prowess. This pride, led by two lionesses known as 'Killing Machine' and 'Princess', is a formidable force in Busanga Plains. Princess, easily identified by her collar, and her sister, Killing Machine, patrol the area with an eye out for anything that will feed their pride. Their pride consists 13 lions including cubs of various ages.
This pride primarily preys on lechwe. However, a single lechwe is rarely sufficient with thirteen hungry mouths to feed, including growing cubs. Their increasing hunger drives them to target larger and more rewarding prey.
In their relentless search for food, the lion pride cornered a massive Nile crocodile. Stranded in a small swampy area and too far from the safety of deeper waters, the crocodile was vulnerable. Despite its attempts to defend itself by snapping aggressively at the lions, it couldn't match the lions' strategic approach.
The turning point came when Princess, the collared lioness, made a daring move. She leaped onto the crocodile's back, biting its neck with her large canines. The combined weight and force of the lions overwhelmed the crocodile, which, after a desperate struggle, succumbed to the pride.
While lions generally do not hunt crocodiles due to the risks involved, it's important to remember that they are opportunistic predators. In the wild, survival often depends on seizing every available chance for a meal. When faced with the pressing needs of their pride, especially with many mouths to feed, lions can display incredible adaptability and courage.

duh
*Especially* when you’re not 5-6m long
Their just as strong on land too, but sneaker in water.
@@floridacracker_ Nope. All their leverage is in the water
@@floridacracker_The problem is endurance. Crocs use buoyancy to help support their body/weight. On land, they have to rely on their short limbs which only works a short period of time. This is exacerbated by their metabolism. So true crocs are strong on land, but if the fight prolongs, they are easily worn out into a weaken state-in extreme scenarios, they may just die without even being attacked as in some zoos.

Croc tasting its own medicine. LOL
It's pretty rare for them to attack crocodiles. They must've been starving.
I’m guessing it was more related to a kill out of curiosity. Group looked pretty good. Each one of them. It’s the rainy season though so food will be scattered. Guide said the area is full of prey. But who knows. Lions act different in overcast, rainy sky’s. It gives them a boost. Like waking up to a sunset on the beach does for us.

The majesty of this creature persist even after his death
The crocodile met an unexpected demise, not through a neck bite by lions or any other apparent cause, but rather it suddenly perished.
I wonder if it was stress. I've read that can often be a cause even in the most formidable of beasts.
You know you are a badass when you feed on a crocodile.
A pride of lions killing a crocodile on land isn't that badass tbh. Lions are much more impressive when tackling buffalo, which are downright terrifying on land and the lions are at a lot of risk. That being said, the lions still need to be super careful here as the crocodile's jaws could land a crippling shot or even crush their skulls.
@@Sam_Arwas Ah, you're one of those. Think I better put it in simpler terms for you, seeing crocodile as a food source is badass. LOL gosh you must really lack self-awareness.

I've been waiting and calling for this forever. There's no way that one jaguar should be able to hunt kill and feed off of any size caiman... ...but a massive lion pride can't hunt kill and feed off a reasonably big crocodile.
Jaguars tend to hunt/kill Yacare Caimans which are 6x smaller than Black Caimans. If Jaguars do hunt black ones it’s usually juveniles, anything below 300lbs.
@@mstr293 hummm. Very interesting and intriguing. I've been fascinated by the Jaguar since 1995 and I wasn't aware of this distinction or discrimination of hunting However, to prove your theory, I think we'd have to see a fully grown male jaguar that's in his prime, forgo a larger black caiman. The way that lions forgo full size elephants, but feed on the adolescents. Lol But your point does make intuitive sense.
@@imgoing2stayonyourmind654 It happens all the time. Jaguars go out of their way to avoid ponds with large adult black caimans.
@@andrewface2355 Okay, well, I don't have any data to counter your assumptions. But I certainly would like to see some footage or a peer reviewed paper, of jaguars being cautious about entering bodies of water because of black caiman, the way that African mammal predators are always vigilant when crossing (or drinking out of) known crocodile infested waters.
Jaguars hunt yacare caiman, which max at around 70kgs. If you put lions, tigers, or even leopards in the Amazon yacare caimans would be a large part of their diet.

That surprised expression from the girl at the start 😂
Those "curious paws" tapping croc's jaws if still active. Guess crocs don't play possum.
Notice how even the lionesses are cautious on how they tackle the crocodile? They know that a bite from a croc could be fatal. They’re probably one of the few animals lions fear. Especially when they’re in and around the water
I do not know if they "fear" anything except the male lion. They certainly are cautious. Who wouldn't be, its how you stay alive....those jaws can kill.
The crocodile got exhausted and lost the fight. He should’ve used up his energy to run away instead of fighting 🙂
Run away? What makes you think it could have outrunned the lions on land?

They haven't been taught how to kill a crocodile while I am sure that jaguars teach their cubs how to. It's a question of knowledge.
“Zebras this is for you” - Lions.
One is a house cat, you can tell cause it has a collar 😆
Those lions arent starving look at the stomach of even the cubs, they look well fed. Lions and Hyenas are opportunistic, theyll eat anything.
For those unaware; the lions didn't kill it, the stress the put the croc under was the bigger problem. For as tough as they are, stress kills crocs and gators easily. This is according to zookeepers and handlers.
Yes absolutely right 👍
I considered that too. I guess even the most formidable of beasts has to have an Achilles' Heel.
Yep
That's pretty damn hilarious when you consider they were around in the time of dinosaurs and survived meteors but some anxiety & depression is what can kill them off..
the cold-blooded beast was probably zapped of energy if it's been a long struggle. Mammals have the advantage of a metabolism that can deliver more sustained energy.
Those muscles on that lioness. She didn't skip jungle gym and her protein.

Once they got the Croc on its back it was a wrap. Those Lions must've been really hungry to go after a Medium-sized Croc like that.

@chiefbrodyrobertson2950 it's not too rare at all a lot of Niles average out at 16 ft but easily reach 18.
@JHTCT3-USMC-777 simply not true even salties are not very common at 18ft
@@chiefbrodyrobertson2950 "The saltwater crocodile is the largest living reptile, with an average size of 17 ft and 1,000 lbs, and a measured maximum of 23 ft and 2,200 lbs!" If the average length is 17ft then I'd say many reach 17ft+ just like the average length for a human male is 5ft 9in - 5ft 10in and most men you meet usually are said size. Crocs won't stop growing but do slow down in growth once a certain size is achieved. diet and environment play a big part in their size and growth as well. Nile crocs average is at around 14-15ft so it's not something I'd say is rare if there are some that are 17ft+.

@@josephujiadughele6035 Sure they were probably hungry, but their body condition is great. Those lions are not underweight, this wasn't an act of desperation.
