This video taught me two things. 1- bells and whistles aside, it's most important to drive the terrain well (picking good lines, turning front wheels back and forth for added traction, bumping past an obstacle with a little momentum, etc.) 2- open diffs are open diffs, and that puts vehicles at a real disadvantage for driving offroad.
This video taugh me only one thing: spend your money in a true off-road vehicle if you need one. Don't waste your money in urban non capable fancy cars.
@@enebolsa9815 Exactly. Even an early 2000s Ford Explorer or Chevy Trailblazer with true 4Hi/4Lo would go right up that. But they were built on truck platforms and have real 4x4 systems. Unfortunately, they've turned all these early real 4x4s SUVs that offered comfort, space and utility into gas sipping weenies that can't make it up hills like this. The whole reason for owning an SUV is off road capability. Otherwise, they are all just large Subaru Outbacks/cars, not SUVs.
one question i have is why didnt you start this channel earlier? This is the best youtube content on offroad, you should also do road testing and 1 hr videos. I was ecstatic on seeing the montage for the next video, i cant wait, hope it drops next week and is much longer than 30 minutes on more obstacles.
Wow! I got surprised by the RAV4's performance. It performed fantastically beyond my expectations. I am thinking of having it in my list. Thanks for these SUV test drive.
I bought a Toyota RAV4 XLE 2021. It's great, only things I miss from my previous RAV4 Limited 2017 are: Sunroof, Leather ish seats, and the possibility to open the trunk from my keys. Good brand, love it.
This is the most extreme condition these cars will ever encounter! 99.9% of them were meant for light snow, muddy puddles, wet road and occasionally unpaved flat terrains. Awesome attempts thanks for sharing!

Good to see the Sportage do as well as it did. I have one. While I don't drive off-road like that, it has never got stuck in a snowstorm. I love the traditional six speed automatic it has.
Gotta love a traditional automatic. Everyone is moving to cvt. My forester has a cvt and I wish I had a manual or regular automatic
Kia partnered with Magna Powertrains in Canada to develop their dynamax system, it truly is better than most competitors, I used to sell them :)

I had a 2018 Sportage with AWD that was so bad in the snow.I live in New York and we did get a good amount of snow this winter, but I can't imagine how it would've performed in worse conditions. Mind me asking what year yours is?
The 2.4 liter engine Sportage behaves way different as the 2 liter, I don’t really know why.

The RAV4 appears to be an XLE trim level, not the Adventure or TRD. The LE and XLE have standard open diffs in the rear. The Adventure and TRD trim levels have the rear clutch type LSD.
I was wondering because the Subaru Wilderness beats it hands down in snow on a different channel
Expected RAV4 to perform well but Forester’s performance was a surprise.
Not surprised at all. Since Subaru switched to the CVT they just aren’t as good as the older 4EAT/5EAT versions, especially the 2009-2013 Forester or 2010-2014 Outback 3.6R that have traction control. The 2020 Tiguan has the most capability of the group. Haldex 5 is a gigantic improvement over previous iterations and is arguably the best here. What makes the Tiguan the best of the group is not only the most torque but the best gearing at an 18:1 crawl ratio. By the way, I had 2 Subaru’s, still love them but sad they use CVTs, and FYI, I drive a Honda Passport with a 3.5L V6 and a 20:1 crawl ratio. It has a mechanical rear LSD and is on another level (that’s why I bought it 😃). I’m not a VW fan, just saying it’s the best in this video.
I'm a fan of Subarus and I'm not surprised by its performance. The CVT really degraded the AWD's capability. Believe me, a 3.6 Outback with the 5EAT will walk up that hill.
Toyota and Subaru should partner and combine Toyota's reliable AISIN 8-speed transmission and Subaru's mainstream AWD.
@@PlymouthNeon almost a year ago Subaru became part of Toyota Motor Group. There’s now a pathway to get a proper transmission into Subarus. Both companies would have awesome AWD vehicles if they took the best from both platforms. As far as the best AWD vehicles, can’t **beat** the Jeep trail hawks. Especially the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee trail hawks with real 4 low and a real rear locking differential. Ford may join the elite club with the bronco sport. Below those vehicles and you have the mechanical rear LSD vehicles, like Honda iVTM4/ Acura SH-AWD, and then vehicles with the GKN twinster rear diff, like the Volvo XC90, Ford Expedition, Chevy blazer. The Rav4 system doesn’t seem to be a true LSD. The vehicles in this comparison are just open diff + traction control.
To me all these suvs are behaving the same ...I must say I was expecting more from the forester due to its reputation but so disappointed 😕😕😕

Once it worked itself out the Rav 4 was excellent in conditions that MOST of these vehicles won't ever see. But in the "off chance" you do decide to take it in these conditions. It's nice too see it can perform in it's given off road modes. Most AWD vehicles that claim too have rock/mud snow, etc...don't live up too it. But the Rav did and that was impressive too me.
Toyotas awd system suckssss! This was not a good test. Also the Subaru, you need to turn off traction control when engaging Xmode. Its also fwd based awd system. It doesn’t kick in until it detects slippage. There are much more accurate tests with same tires than this video. Also in snow.
I wonder how my 2014 AWD RAV4 would do on this test. I'm not about to burn up my transmission and differential trying it out though. Kind of crappy it seems like the "lock train" mode wasn't doing much. Maybe it's different on my car?

And of course this your show and it is for you to decide.
On the Mazda CX-5, my experience is that "ESP-off" works somewhat similar to the more recent "OFF-ROAD" mode. The traction control grips the spinning wheel more aggressive to prevent diagonal stop. What concerns me though, is the overheating of the AWD system.
Looks like a hot day, probably not a big deal most if the time
Would the RAV4 hybrid be expected to perform as good as this one ?
Rav4. 💪💪💪. I expect subaru forester would equally good with rav4. But maybe the y need to change the cvt to 8 speed automatic
You should work for Subaru - that’s an excellent solution to avoid CVT and keep good fuel economy. My old 2009 XT turbo with four-speed auto ran perfectly and was a master of steep tracks and sand.
Forrester was driven by a driver who clearly doesn't know how to choose the driving mode for the conditions at hand.
Not all RAV4s get the AWD system that this one had. I think there's 3 different AWD systems Toyota puts in the RAV4, depending on trim. Also Toyota's AWD is "On Demand". It is not a full time AWD system, like Subaru. So depending on the circumstance, one might win one day, and the other the next. If you already don't know, and "On Demand" system only sends power to the other axle when it feels slip. If it doesn't feel slip, these On Demand AWD systems are almost always just FWD vehicles.
@@knightryder3757 Subaru with it's CVT and junk software LSD wasn't built for something like this. I best if the Forester had real mechanical LSD or Toyota's clutch system on that rear axle, it would have made it up. But with it's current design for most road usage and forest fire trails .... I highly doubt any driver could have done better with this test.

excellent video! my only issue is you didn't try disabling the traction control on the cx5. it's known that mazda's awd system performs better in off road situations with traction control off vs on. the traction control lets the wheels slip ironically. it helps with maintaining control when going at speed on loose surfaces. disabling the traction control makes the brakes work more aggressively to get stop the slipping wheels, transferring more power to the loaded wheels. probably won't fix the over heating but you tried enabling/disabling systems on other cars. i wanted to see what the mazda could do had traction control been disabled. it would also probably be similar to the off road mode on the newer cx-5's.
All comes with experience. Let's try next time. Bhe way, Mazda promises an off-road mode for CX5.

One of the best videos regarding this issue...Thank you
The cars that went last are at a disadvantage because the previous ones would have dug up the test road… the tyres did a lot as well..
Waiting for next video 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Excellent tests and impressive results. For the cx-5 you must disable ESP and it will activate off road (ish) mode

Thank you for sharing this I was wondering how good the Mazda cx5 is with climbing
I’m glad that you liked the video. Any specific cars you would like to see in upcoming video?
I have seen several videos where the Toyota RAV4 consistently wins this kind of off-road tests. I was thinking to buy the Subaru but now I am convinced that the RAV4 is a better option. I enjoyed the video

I never thought I would see the day that a RAV4 beats a Subaru. Subaru really destroyed their off road advantage with their CVT transmissions
@@revaholic I'm curious why Subaru trounces everyone in all tests elsewhere on the net, but fails on this one? Something seems off. I've seen Subaru's make it up extremely similar obstacles many many times.
@@slandshark they probably use a manual for the tests, manual has better awd
@@keponen331 They don't make manuals anymore. Yeah, something off here. A Rav 4 is nothing more than a slip and grip system. The front wheels slip and the back wheels kick in a brief assist. The Subaru is full time AWD. All four wheels are turning constantly. Might be the type of tires they had on it, although I was recently camping in backcountry Montana when we had four days of rain and the roads turned to gumbo. There were 4wd pickups and ATVs stuck everywhere. I didn't even try to move for almost a week. The only thing driving around was a Subaru Outback with stock tires!
I am happy for the Toyota Rav4. Surprising results.
Frankly, I was disappointed with the trailing prowesses of them all. These low-powered cars don’t have the torque to be good at off-roading without a lot of gear. The Toyota Land Cruiser has V-8 power, a “normal” transmission, low range, and uses traction-control AWD, and even with street tires, it will crawl up muddy and rutted ‘walls” with hardly slipping a wheel. The crime is that these little sawed-off AWD CUV’s are marketed to be much more than they really are.
@@sking2173 Most of them will just be mall crawlers anyway. People now just want to have a high driving position. And if that offers better visibility, I don't blame them. But yeah, who buy these cars, don't buy them for tough off roading. If the AWD systems helps in the snow, rain and light off roading conditions like bad roads and gravel then I guess that's enough for the buyers. Who wants real off roading buys a real SUV.
Agreed RAV4 performed very well and excellent!
Korean Kia looks better than Toyota
REABILITY always Toyota!!
Rav 4 was excellent. The biggest problem all these cars have is that they are petrol (gas) engines. The diesel engined versions produce their torque at much lower revs, producing less slippage. The diesels perform much better off road.
