2021 Subaru Forester vs 2021 Mazda CX 5 vs 2021 Toyota RAV4 | Best SUV 2021?
Today we do a test drive comparison of the best SUVs in the midsize, five-passenger crossover segment. In the ring today is the 2021 Toyota RAV4 XLE Premium AWD, the 2021 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring AWD, and the 2021 Subaru Forester Limited (which comes standard with symmetrical all-wheel-drive). Which one should you buy? Well...that depends. Watch on to find out.
A special thank you goes out to the following dealers for loaning me a car to drive:

I just bought a RAV4 XLE Premium and it is awesome! Stylish and very well made. This will be my last SUV as I am 74 and it will last me the rest of my days. Will go out in style!!!🙂👍
Linda, you’re going to live to 100, so you better be thinking of your next vehicle!!!
@@user-mz5tf5pm7u said subaru 😊
If you like quality with unexciting driving and a little too much plastic, detracting from the luxury, RAV4 is your baby. If you love to drive and make it fun, plus a lot more luxury feel at the same price point, pick a Mazda CX-5 with the base 2.5 l 4 cylinder engine.. You will not be disappointed!
You will live to 120 years old and need a new car. Keep on driving ❤️
I had a Rav 4WD Limited and I did love it. I looked at a new one to replace it with. I also looked at the Forester Touring (Premiere in Canada). I’m in my late 50s and only drive about 6K miles a year. So I knew that whatever I chose, it’ll probably be the last vehicle I’ll ever need to buy. I hope you’re enjoying your Rav as much as I’m enjoying my Forester.
I don't get the hype that Mazdas do not get good gas mileage. My previous car, a Honda CR-V, got 23 mpg on the twisty mountain roads around my home. My 2016 Mazda CX-5, gets 30 mpg. And it still looks classier and handles better than any Honda or Toyota crossover.
Good job on the review. This year I'm driving a CX-5 2.5L turbo. My previous car was a 6.2L V8 and I'm surprised how well the Mazda turbo does in terns of performance. Very easy car to live with (getting in and out, day to day driving, etc).
A very good comprehensive review. This will save people time before heading out there for test drives.
What a well done video. Thank you for all the time that you have into it. Great use of descriptive language. It’s easy to see you passion with vehicles. Again nicely presented! Rick
Not often that someone can see how much I like making these videos and the automotive industry in general! Thanks for your comment 😄
One of the best explained reviews I have seen or watched Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is a very good comparison video - thank you for putting this up.
Glad you liked it!
Great review. Love the systematic approach to evaluating the vehicles and making the comparison as fair as possible. It seems like a lot of work went into producing this video. I appreciate your effort very much. All three SUVs are great in their own rights. Given where I live, the Subaru Forest is ideal for me. Thanks again for a great review video.
High praise, thank you! Always glad to hear that someone recognizes the time and effort I put into them. Good choice with the Subaru!
This is what I was looking for. Thank you so much man for your effort to make such an amazing video.

One of the best comparisons I’ve seen. Keep up the good work. 2021 CX-5 owner here
Got a CX-5. Got the Grand Touring Reserve with the turbo - definitely recommend if you want more power. Love it.
Looking at the same model/trim in Machine Metal Gray. What color did you get?
I have seen so many reviews on KZhead and websites ...and the CX-5 is definitely the winner for all experts ... I got my eyes in that same trim or the GT with premium package.
My wife did the same and traded her ForesterXT when Subaru expected her to drop down in power and pay too much for an under powered vehicle. Now she has 250HP with her CX-5 and 5 more MPG. Nice ride!
Love mines too
Does Grand Touring reserve come with Turbo Engine.

Still loving it?
Great job on the comparison! Random question though, where'd you find that wallpaper at 4:30?
Thank you! And it's one of the new stock Apple wallpapers that I think came out with iOS 14. If you go to change your wallpaper and select 'stills' it's one of the pictures there!

Your review is very helpful and you answered all my questions..Great work!
Awesome, glad you liked it!
This is an excellent comparison review! Your commentary was spot on, and your visuals/camera panning work allowed for everything to be rather easy to follow along with. Also, every segment within this video covered the aspects that most buyers would be interested in knowing. Well done! 👍🏼 I throughly enjoyed the driving impressions segment! Haha! 😂👍🏼 Super funny/entertaining, but still really good points were made. Once again, well done, man! This is definitely a tough comparison to name a clear winner. Each of these compact utility vehicles excel in their own ways. Thus, buyers should consider what matters most to them. Luckily, you made that more doable with your conparison review. I laughed about the sunglasses. I lowkey need a pair too (once I transition to contacts). These glasses just aren't the move with this bright SUN down here in South Florida! LOL! Keep up the great work!!!
Appreciate it my friend! Glad you liked driving impressions because this is the first video to include it! More to come in the future.
Yes! I noticed that! Definitely a good addition. 👍🏼 Looking forward to what you have coming up next!
I know this is an older view, but I'm impressed with your review style, very thorough. Great job! I am considering all these 3 vehicles as my next SUV for the family.

Just got my Subaru forester limited yesterday. I love it. Good feature, well designed. Our family is a fan of Subaru. We drove Crosstreck and impreza.

Thank you, glad it was what you were looking for!
I was looking for a car with performance and handling plus I wanted an suv for cargo, snow driving, camping etc. I chose the turbo'd CX-5 and it has combined both into one vehicle.
Same here
An excellent review! I think you nailed everything down, with the exception of value for your dollar. I recently purchased a RAV4 hybrid over both of these vehicles and the Honda CR-V. For me it came down to fuel economy, storage space and lightweight trail performance. If the Mazda had comparable storage, they probably would be my top pick. If I were to take on more snow, I’m sure I would have gone with the Forster. I suppose I picked the in between option. I hope you make more of these comparison videos! Thumbs up!
Thanks for the comment, I am glad you enjoyed it! When it comes to value, I may tend to define that category too narrowly (for me, I just think of it as features of the vehicle for your dollar ie: sunroof, leather, LED lights, bigger infotainment screen etc) and then I count storage space and MPG etc in their own categories so as to separate them from 'value' just for the sake of comparing the differences. Ultimately, every single part of the car has to do with value however, so you're right. Good choice on the RAV4 Hybrid! I think you'll be very interested in the video that comes out tomorrow where I pit the RAV4 against the RAV4 Hybrid and the new Venza. I won't spoil which one I would pick of the three...but let's just say great minds think alike!
RAV4 hybrid not the best awd system. Electric motor or motors for rear wheels just simple have not enough power. But non hybrid RAV4 awd system not any more worth than Subaru‘s. We all need to forget now days that Subaru’s awd system is best. Check out video: SUV battle 2020: Toyota RAV4, Nissan... I think Kia better performed uphill than Forester.
The Rav4 Hybrid weighs 700 lbs more than the Mazda CX-5, so I wouldn't think it'd be that great with handling, or with any kind of trail performance.
Wow, I have to say this is one of the very best and most comprehensive car videos I’ve ever seen. The excellent content is presented by an articulate intelligent guy and much appreciated. Thank you. 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for the kind words, glad you enjoyed the video!
Awesome review. I recently bought vehicles from both Subaru & Mazda 2022 Forester Wilderness is amazing - love seating position, the better tuned CVT and the larger back seat space. For the “family” vehicle we bought a Mazda CX-9. It was the most fun to drive of all the main stream competitors.
Another excellent review. I appreciate the time stamps.
Appreciate that--and yes, they're getting long so hopefully splitting them up helps pinpoint only the info you need!

Very well done. We're in the process of buying an suv and these are up there, Hyundai has a Tuscon in 2022 that looks pretty sweet so we may wait.
Can't wait to get my hands on the new Tucson and see how it stacks up!
I bought a base 2021 CX5 Sport AWD, traded in my 2017 Outback, which was a good vehicle..Im very pleased, tons of great options standard, seamless driving, ....automatic transmission vs cvt,, no stop/ start nonsense drove me to the mazda vs another subaru.....So far, extremely pleased with Mazda CX5
I bought the new 2021 CX-5 also, for the same reasons... no iStop (Engine Stop/Start Technology), no CVT, and no Cylinder Deactivation when you get the turbo.
Agreed. I’m on my 5th Mazda and it’s 2 weeks old. A CX-5
Great reviews!
I absolutely love my Subaru Forester 2020 Touring trim. It performed in the snow so well. 10” of Dry or wet snow with OEM tires and AWD it just plowed through the snow. I think the engine noise on acceleration scares folks but it accelerates just fine. Love the style, heated seats, heated steering wheel, automatic vehicle hold for hills, reflection on the infotainment center is a non issue. I would give the Forester a chance.
OEM tires are no substitute for good snow tires :)
I hope you don’t mind but can I ask how much was the “out of the door price”. Thanks
Well you caught at a bad time. I’m moving across the state and all my paperwork is packed up. But I do remember the sticker price was 37,000 for my Forester Touring. He listed it in the contract as 30,500. Course I purchased extended warranty which i love and other items.
@@stephenmaurer156 , thank you. For replying. I was looking at the same as yours yesterday. It is listed at $35,500 with 3,500 miles. Like to get some ideas of how much to ask. Thank you again. 👍👌

I bought the cx-5 carbon turbo . I like the controller knob. Rear view mirror. Loud horn . The steering wheel is not my fav. Also the gas and break pedals feel too close. Overall I’m glad with the purchase
I think any of these 3 vehicles would be excellent. My daughter has the CX5 while my son in law has the Forrester. Both are very happy with their choices. Quite reliable. More than enough room for their needs. I would chose on the basis of which car you like.
CX-5 👍
That Forester's 8 inch screen only comes with harman kardon package right?
Went with the 2021 Suburu Forester Sport after test driving everything. Can't beat the AWD on Suburu and the eyesight technology is impressive. Ended up snowed out at Steven's Pass this last weekend and the Forester handled everything beautifully and in comfort.
The Rav4 beat it. All manufacturers are good with AWD now
@@ontarioman6301 how did the rav4 beat it? Im stuck between the two
@@photographywithbrallan1247 it didn't. And eyesight is better than the Toyota and Mazda versions. Stick with the Forester. Its not the shortsighted choice, which is why Consumer Reports gives it their highest rating for a compact SUV. The Mazda is a shortsighted thrill. But where it counts, the Mazda falls way short.
The cx 5 is the only Compact that pass the new crash test. Subaru are over rated. Consumers name the CX 5 as the most reliable. Then Toyota.

@@russclaeyborn3587 thanks! I'm moreso concern about the space with carseats. One carseat in the CX-5 with is just a little tight compared to others. The CX-9 definitely looks nicer/sportier than a Forester (and its bigger), but just not sure about whether the cost is justified or not.

30:12 This is a very good comparison review video, good job! One thing I noticed is that you said Mazda doesn't have a touchscreen, but in fact it does! I own a Mazda6 and yes it is a touchscreen, but the touchscreen is disabled when the car is in motion and above 5 mph to avoid distraction to the drivers. It is listed as a safety feature in my vehicle's user manual. Just want to put it out there for other folks who are wondering about that. Thank you for the video!
You are absolutely correct-just checked Mazda’s website to confirm! Should work when stopped, unfortunately I only tried it while moving. Oh well, the rotary knob is easier than reaching out to touch it anyway. Thanks for the correction, and I’m glad you enjoyed the review!
For 2020 but for 2021 its not a touchscreen anymore
There is a touch screen on 2019 CX5 but you can't use it much while driving...
My 2021 Mazda CX-5 doesn't use a touchscreen for the Infotainment System, which is fine with me. The rotary dial and controls on the shifter console are easy to use, very comfortable, and makes driving safer. Also, there are no fingerprints on the monitor, and there are no arm cramps.
My 2021 Mazda CX-5 does not have a touch screen in any manner
Nice comparison. I just hoped you'd talk more about Subaru handling like how the wheels feel in your hands and how it handles a sharp turn
I wish I had done that as well, unfortunately it was the first group of vehicles that I was able to drive for my videos so I was new to testing handling. Thanks for the comment!
Yes!!
I bought the 2021 AWD Rav4 Limited for reliability. It’s 3 months old now and I’m loving it day by day.
Chassis balance is something I need to share about.. all these have different pros and cons but do not sleep on how much more fun the Mazda is to drive, in my house we own forester and CX-5, the drive dynamics aren’t even close I will always recommend back to back test drives (yes I work at a Mazda dealer that has Subaru sister store owns and I personally own both. If your are remotely aggressive driver the Mazda will show its brand essence in spades VS good bad weather peace of mind more trunk. (Both are amazing all round… guess that’s my preference)

I went out and tested all 3 suv’ . I hated the auto shutoff feature on the forester , any time I stopped at a light or sign the engine turns off to save fuel. it was very noticeable also not a fan of the styling and the warranty seems mediocre . The Rav was nice but the sales person was too aggressive and turned me off from buying from them, texted me 6 times to push me to a sale, did the whole let me introduce you to my sales manager after the test drive thing and couldn’t answer a question when I asked him about the vehicle like where is it made? I ended up buying the CX 5 cause I liked the features and the feel of the drive, The salesperson let the car sell itself with 360” presentation of features and specs.
Which has better interior materials and best ground clearance? Which is better for light off road duty?
Subaru is best for light off-road duty and has the best ground clearance. Mazda had best interior materials.
Good camparison but I wish when evaluating longevity
分かり易い解説有り難う。
Which of the 3 cars was the quietest on the road? Which of the 3 cars had the most comfortable soft ride? with thanks
The Toyota is the answer to both of those I would say. Mazda may have been a little quieter under full acceleration, but had a slightly harsher suspension. Subaru was loudest and had a similarly supple suspension to the Toyota, but the Toyota is probably the best combination of the two.
@@Allcarseveryday thanks for your kind reply - key points for me - will shortly arrange a test drive
Definitely test them first, I drove the Toyota as well and my experience was the opposite of allcarseveryday. I found the RAV4 to be noisier, clunkier, and all around more stressful to drive than the Forester. The brakes are grabby, the transmission never seems to be doing the right thing at the right time, and the suspension is definitely harsher. The Forester was incredibly smooth and quiet, you hear some engine noise when accelerating but that's it. It's honestly pretty relaxing and comfortable. The Toyota felt like a car that was built on paper then shipped out whereas the Subaru felt like it was built by people who drove it extensively before shipping it out. The turning radius on the Forester is excellent as well. It didn't feel as big inside, the RAV4 definitely won that. It was also a tiny bit faster than the Subaru, but not by as much as people would have you believe.
CX5 hands down
Hands down, and high fives all around! Zoom, Zoom, Zoom!
I bought the 2021 CX-5 Carbon Edition Turbo w/ AWD. A year and a half later, I still feel that I bought the best vehicle for 2021.
Jim Powell speaking. Being an owner of the signature model CX-5, I must say that neither one of these other two vehicles comes close to the comfort, ride and performance of the CX-5. I mean rode noise, full leather interior, looks and on and on, the CX-5 is hands down the superior vehicle.
Thank you for highlighting almost all the significances. Your video helped me to make a decision. I am from Chicago and I think Subaru would be more compatible under deep snow. I am a little concern about the parts of Subaru, We all know Toyota is easy to exchange hands OR any mechanic can easily diagnose it when it comes to restoration from body to engine. I am not sure how things going to be with Subaru. Would that be more expensive and painful to get it repaired?
I think Subaru is a brand that is mainstream enough that you will not have problems with the parts/reparability of the vehicle. The powertrain is unique compared to other vehicles, but Subaru uses a variation of the same Boxer engine in lots of its vehicles--I'm sure reputable mechanics are familiar with it. I would theorize that repair costs are pretty similar, but that being said I am not 100% sure.
@@Allcarseveryday thankyou
Plus Subaru gives you blown head gaskets at no extra charge and changing the plugs is a nightmare.💩
@CountryStranger Look at the NHTSA website for the Subaru model that you’re considering. For 2021 there are numerous complaints already about windshields cracking. It’s too soon for a head gasket problem; give it a few years. If you want reliably, then buy a Toyota. 👍
Trust me. In Chicago you wanna have Subaru Outback, Impreza , Forester. AWD will help you a lot. I know cause I am there. And yes, buy the XT if you are looking for a good reliable car with no CVT transmission. Last year they made it was 2014. So still a good year to buy for less money. Just look for any clean title with no accidents. You are welcome
Great review, however that Rav 4 is not the XLE premium. The wheels on that are a standard XLE.
Thank you! The gray one in most of the shots is in fact an XLE Premium, but it’s the Hybrid model (hence the different wheels and headlights-everything else is identical to the normal gas version). I drove a normal gas XLE for the driving impressions, though, to make sure that part was accurate as well.

No
😅
When driving the Subaru were you in S mode or I mode? You didn’t say, could be why you thought it was sluggish, i has a more drawn out excel ration, where s has a much quicker one.
The first bit of acceleration I was not in S-Mode, but on the way back I was. It was definitely better, but still didn't feel as quick as the other two. Part of that may also be because the Subaru does much of its accelerating at lower RPM, and so it comparatively feels slower up top despite really not being that much slower from an objective standpoint. Statistically speaking the Subaru is only a couple tenths slower to 60 than the other two, I just thought it felt like more than that (especially in normal mode).

Drive a new Mazda and then try a Toyota .... it is like day and night. Now if you are loooking for space, name, ...Mazda is not yet ready for that.
@@dealarea3059 Subaru CVT is a non starter. I went with the Toyota Rav 4 hybrid because of the eCVT which uses planetary gears and electric motors. Subaru uses a belt driven CVT. KZhead the difference. It does not take an engineer to figure out which build is superior long term Blow out a CVT plan on $6,000.
@@rncondie 6k+ for sure on the transmission. Had to replace one at 62k. I was pretty pissed.
Well I mean these vehicles have been around. The Mazda 6-speed transmission is old and bulletproof proof
Wrong data for Forester's cargo space. It's 35.4 cubic feet, not 28.9!
Some of us like good driving dynamics. I have test drive every SUV . The RAV4 is not good for tall drivers. I have no problems seeing out of it the back of the cx 5 and I am 6 ft 3"

Mask does absolutely nothing. Please do your research!

Ugh masks are a joke per Fauci. Why surrender your freedoms so easily?
FORESTER, CX-5 made in japan, RAV4 made in USA. CX-5 6 speed transmission, Forester and RAV4 CVT, CX-5 has TURBO. FORESTER has more space and safety awd, eye sight system, CX-5 has driving Fun, simple, high quality no engine problem and issue, Rav-4 has more reliable, resale value. Design is depend on you but Forester is most ugly. I bought CX-5 TURBO but if Forester will be changed design and XT model, I will choose it.
I chose the sube limited 2 tone leather 600 watts stereo very plane limited here.
Forrester is not made in Japan...CX5 is...the only one out of these 3....
