First Look: Toyota Land Cruiser | New Defender Rival
Ever see a new car and think, “Oh, yeah, they’re gonna sell a billion of these". Meet the new Toyota Land Cruiser - a rugged midsize SUV with rough-and-tumble intentions that's coming to Europe and America - yay!
The Land Cruiser certainly looks the business, appearing to have been designed only using right angles. The standard 18-inch wheels and knobby tires give this thing real presence, and the optional 20-inch alloys look great, too. The uptick in the body sides and contrasting white roof are clutch styling choices, and you know, this thing gives off major retro FJ Cruiser vibes. Nice work.
But what else do you need to know? Join TG's Tom Ford for a full deep-dive into Toyota's new, retro-modern Land Cruiser.

The first edition round headlights look much better in my opinion. I'm excited to have the landcruiser back in the US
You like the round headlights? Toyota- top trim only
I like the mean Transformers look of the boxy lights. But the round ones are cute… But I don’t know about the four banger tho. It’s a hefty vehicle and I tend to trust at least 6 or more pistons to move bigger vehicles especially for off-roading. Electric motors are fine but if you’re submerged in knee deep water, I’d rather not have e-motors to potentially short out.
I like the boxy headlights better. It blends with the rest of the design.
@@obsoletecd-rom, unfortunately it’s the bottom trim. Wait, I can still barely afford that
@@obsoletecd-rom toyota has stated that the headlights are interchangeable, plug and play.
I once drove a late 80's Land Cruiser across Bolivia on a tv documentary, the best driving experience of my life, never once faltered, and we did the journey in a huge amount of comfort considering the state of the roads/tracks we covered. Viva Toyota!.
I once drove a proper LC across Oman ( not a Prado) by far the best car terrain match I have ever driven.
Hammond is that you?
With your 2 mates?
As they say: if you want to get into the jungle, buy a Land Rover. If you want to get out again, buy a Land Cruiser.
We know the land cruisers in Colombia as burbujas, it's a iconic car in my country. For mud, climbing mountains, off road.... Todo terrero, the king is back.
Toyota has been doing some great work these last years
🤣🤣🤣 No they haven’t, the 200 and 300 series have had their fair share of problems. In Australia, 200 series - Transmission , injector and dpf problems and a crap airbox design that lets in dust. 300 series, oil consumption, dpf and dpf injector failures and they still didn’t fix the airbox. Still getting dusted engines
@@AussieDazza I was more talking about their designs not the mechanics of the cars
@@AussieDazza the 200 and the 300 are still great cars, despite those problems you mentioned. Landcruisers are still the car you see the most out bush
Iv got a yaris which 25 years old and still runs so well. These land cruisers look great. Toyota 4 lyf.
For sure. Never expected my daily dream car (as in I could live with it and use it constantly) to be a Toyota, let alone a Corolla... but then the GR Corolla happened. And now this can be the other one - the kid hauler/adventure wagon.
This style of Car Reviews is so refreshing! I hate looking at them nowadays because everyone does the SAME thing...use the same vocabulary and adjectives, use the same camera angles, talk the same way, same background music or lack thereof. But this video, excellent B-roll footage, high quality cameras, personable review style, just overall high quality content. Great job!!!
bro 💯💯💯 no names tho i know but raitis ride lol talk talk even give history and zonks
Tom Ford has been underrated forever. Apart from his stint on Top Gear USA, he has been really entertaining. Going all the way back to Fifth Gear.
@throttlehouse channel pretty good. Start with the LFA episode
He still got the name wrong, it's a Landcruiser Prado. Also said the 70 series is only coming out in Japan, wrong
TG on KZhead make everything right in my opinion, they don't try too much silly stuff and just inform about great cars. Only thing missing is Chris Harris driving around from time to time like in the "older" days
I have to say, Toyota has been releasing hit after hit for the last 5-6 years. Its honestly impressive to see the shift in the brand.
Yeah it's just mental! GR 86 almost kills the Miata! New Prius became slick AND quick! New Supra is genius: a bimmer built under toyota QA! The freaking Corolla GR!! What is happening??? Toyotas got fun and pretty while bimmers got effing pig faced!!! And the new Crown! Good god it's a limo!
Agreed. For the first time in decades, I'm actually seeing Toyota cars that look and drive great. Was going to get me a new Defender, but I think I'll wait a few more months for this LandCruiser.
All they need to do is work on their interiors now
We can all thank Akio Toyoda for that. When he stepped up to become CEO, he vowed "Toyota will no longer make boring cars". Boy has he fkin succeeded
But still an absolut disaster on the electric front
I am 52 years old. My father got his Land Cruiser in 1983. 40 years ago. Guess which vehicle I've always wanted and always had for the last 30 years? I got my first Land Cruiser FJ75 in 1993 and have had one ever since and currently drive a Land Cruiser 200 from 2009. Before that I had two Land cruisers, 100 series and 79 series. That's it That's my vehicle history for the last 40 years, 4 Land cruisers. Of course I have had sports cars and hatchback like Audi TT and BMW M3 but never a day without my Toyota Land Cruiser. At times more than two in the garage which are not used for a whole month but still Land Cruiser is such a comforting sight that I cannot put it in words.😊
This is a really hard competitor both for Discovery and Grenadier. Looks very solid, well built and at a much more competitive price!
The Grenadier is a novelty choice at best. You had to be filled with self loathing to choose one of a Landcruiser or Defender.n
and you are forgetting the most important thing mate. Its gonna be reliable!
Ye, pay 80 grand for a Grennadier with a BMTroubleu drive train in an untested platform or the same again for JLR's proven yrack record of reliability.... 🤔
Until you get a flat tire, and have to call a tow truck, because all you have is a can of fix a flat. Hahahahah.
Toyota has the reliability
Huge respect for Toyota for still making stuff like the Land Cruiser and the GR86, these are proper cars others have stopped building long ago.
And the Yaris GR of course
Then you know nothing what Toyota has been doing in Indonesia since 1970's
@@RIZFERD?
Gr Yaris meet your approval? Tbh I see the value in the Aygo, but to each their own....
Love Tom Ford's videos. Perfect balance of information and comment. Not a 4x4 person myself. But I want one of these! None of the awful image of Land Rovers, Range Rovers, Mercedes or BMW. And REAL buttons! Round lights look better IMO.
1:32 I think it's a bit of a stretch to call them "completely different front ends" when it's just different headlights but I prefer the roundies
Stop comparing it to the land cruiser 200 or 300! This is the new prado. It's not smaller than the old land cruiser. The corresponding prado was never the size of the 80, 100, 200 or 300 series land cruiser
Thank you
Yes! An actual Toyota fan who understands whats going on, this is the successor to the J150 platform (Prado/GX) not the J200 (LC200/ LX)
Exactly!!
Perfect description. Saw one at an auto show, complete letdown.
Get a grip. Inaccurate you tube vid,my god.
Looks like a really nice update, I particularly like that interior especially the fact that they've kept all those buttons as well as the touchscreen
How Much??????????
@@carmenvanhook5756 how much what????????
The Price on the Middle land Cruiser Blue I have a FJ Cruiser 2007 2022 4 Runner !!!
I remember the good old Fifth Gear days with Tom Ford. Still bringing amazing content.
Whoever designed this piece of art aced it, this will be a timeless classic beauty like the Land Cruiser 70 series
This is, without a doubt, the most excited I've been excited for a new vehicle since the new Suzuki Jimny! I want one so badly!
Never thought I would see you here! Your recent documentary on the Oscarsborg Fortress was fantastic. Greetings from Vietnam!🎉
Same. Sorely tempted to sell my Jimny for one of these!
Utterly fabulous. Simple and functional. If you listen carefully you’ll hear the sound of Land Rover executives weeping
I rather have this for a field trip than a Jeep or a Defender.
They have been doing that for years - but still they manage to sell a LOT of vehicles... if they can get this reliability iceberg out of their path they are still the best.
Prefer the round lights!
Stunning! Less weight and bulk is always better off road
Better everywhere.
The Mercedes W123 (1976-1986) also had different front ends (headlights and bumpers) depending on the model. The 280 and 280E had rectangular headlights and full chrome bumpers, where all other (cheaper) models had round headlights and plastic bumper end caps. This to answer your question @ 1:27.
Family had one for the first 12 years of my life. 240D. Absolute tank, a little underpowered though lol
I'm a rectangular lights man myself but totally get many wanting the round headlamps, it's a nice retro touch
Rectangular will have adaptive headlights, that curved ones wont. Comparison specs have been sent out from Toyota dealers.
45k in the uk as a base price point is a steal compared with other expensive rivals , if you at least until now base it on the looks alone . I think thats really reasonable .
it's a stupid estimate from him, it's obviously not going to be that cheap.
Bullshit quoting that price, it's coming to New Zealand and Australia first and nobody knows the prices yet
Not a chance it will be £45k starting price.
It'll be $55K USD in the US, so 44k English pounds checks out!@@darrenhaywood9260
This is proper slap in the face to Land Rover Discovery
Land rover doesn't even make suv anymore the are a car company maybe one day they get a proper suv but until then they are a car company
I love the square head lights, reminds me of the 1987 Toyota van we had for running our family around.
Why do they keep on comparing this to the full size LC? It’s the Prado people… smaller LC
Excellent! The content lately is of such quality, thay i proclaim the good old Top Gear being reborn in the new more digital era! 👌
Kind of reminds me of a Tonka toy...and I mean that in a positive sense. I love the retro knod to past colours, prefer the round lights and appreciate the fact that it hasn't become even bigger (and therefore more unwieldy), as so many others have - some are impossible to park in a UK space. The engineering seems modern but not overly complex and it's a Toyota, so reliability will hopefully be a given. I look forward to the road tests.
I like both headlights, kind of sad the round ones are first edition only, but because of the design/engineering Im wondering if there will be an aftermarket where you can easily swap the headlights. Hopefully?
He was hard to hear; the 1958 (lowest) trim level AND the first 3000 first edition actually all come with the round headlights. The higher trim levels are the rectangular lights.
@@ernestdesimone2234 ah thanks for clarifying.
When the LC250 or Prado was first unveiled, I definitely preferred the rectangular headlight version. But the round headlight version is starting to grow on me the more I see it. To the point that I don't mind it at all now. But if asked to choice now, I'd still go for the rectangular headlights version. But I have a feeling in 10 years time, the round headlight version will be the more desirable one. The one that will age well. Just take a look at the Jeep Wrangler CJ or TJ (round) & YJ (Square). The Wrangler with the round headlights are preferred.
Love the sense of humor. Very unique. Yet still informative. It felt like 2 minutes.
Things are either unique or they are not. There aren't different different levels of "unique".
@@zoid9969 Wow, very incredible. So true. It's a figure of speech which is used to attribute uncommonness, rarity or unusual nature to something. But thanks anyway.
I love it's classic old school design!
I think that that’s a great looking truck, I have a 23 plate SWB one, it’s a fantastic vehicle, I thought I’d keep it for years but now think I might chop it in for one of these lovely looking bits of kit.
Rectangular headlights are spot on and consistent with the rest of the design!
Finally reliable Defender
The US even gets the slightly more luxurious version with the Lexus GX550 and its 3.4 twin turbo.
Fuk that shit. We want the diesel
I prefer the round headlights. Although the rectangular ones did make it look like the V8 landcruiser Amazon, which I always liked. I think it looks a great car.
Had a 1998 L C 350k no problem s
Wow this is really taking the fight to JLR and Defender for that retro space. I think I prefer the Toyota - it looks genuinely cool but as a result of a sense of purpose, rather than just styled to look retro. It's a serious machine first and doesnt appear to have compromised on that - be keen to know pricing but I predict long waiting lists. Great review btw :)
The defender is only so reliable to bring you to the grocery store car park.
Firstly I prefer the two-tone exterior colour,& bout round or square headlights I love em both equally.my favourite exterior design is the bulgy bonnet/hood as with the 70-series.thanks Toyota's 🎉❤
One of the only car I would trust in extreme conditions
the detail highlights have me cracking up, thanks for the info and thanks for the laughs
Reliable, timeless, and professional. Perfect.
I love the round head lights. I want the base model. Seems perfect. Wish it was $10k cheaper
New king in town? The Land Cruiser has always been king
round headlamp model for sure! looks like the 70s/80s LCs but modern and ruggedly stylish.
Are you comparing it to the old prado or the old LC 200 series?
Japan, the kid at school who copies your homework but is better at spelling and punctuation so gets a higher grade.
Prado 110% ❤
If you look at the back it says Land Cruiser Prado, that is the sister version of the big Land Crusier and the Prado is a very popular choice in Asia. I lived in Taiwan for 13 years and the Prado is the Land Crusier for sale there. It's not a new car, it's an updated, revamped Prado.
Standard B teir journalism
Lovely video and a lovely presentation! Tom Ford is doing awesome work!
This is a rivalry of extremes. The most unreliable brand vs the most reliable brand
@deepwebintel quite simple - the more complicated and the more tec the more chance of it going wrong! Toyota were reliable as they were basic with very little to go wrong. Not so for the modern Toyota's
Great video. This ‘Cruiser - the new Prado, as the smaller line is called here in Australia - is a huge step up from its predecessor. However, I’m not sure that it’s really comparable with the Ineos, which seems to have truly taken the mantle as the no-nonsense, go-anywhere work horse that Land Rovers and Land Cruisers used to be. It’ll be interesting to see how it performs in the real world.
That’s right, except on one key point, the Prado will be priced where the Grenadier alluded they would be at in their original marketing. Now it’s $20-25k more. Hard to justify the price difference.
By "real world" you mean the Wimbledon school run?
Agree with the Prado comment, seems there is a bit of confusion with Prado / Cruisers. Don't really agree with the Ineos though, if anything the default work horse would be the 70 series or Hilux/other ute, especially when there are 10 times more Toyota dealers.
@@ianandersen2130agreed with the confusion, I understood this as the Landcruiser Prado update than the full size Landcruiser. There are some American videos that confuse the Prado and it's larger sibling, but this bloke hasn't done it much better here either. The 75 Landcruiser we all know but isn't so much in countries with more urban 4x4 use.
real world, meaning soccer moms doing shopping?
This reminds me so much of my 90 series Prado!
the spirit of the FJ crusier is in this.. superb
There has never been a presenter with a better colour picked shoe fitting the car ever 😂 cheers from Vienna, Austria. Keep up the good work man!
The Land Cruiser is built to last a minimum of 25 years in the worlds harshest conditions. No other SUV is built to this standard. Not your Land Rover, not your Bronco, not your Wrangler not even the G-class.

I didn’t know seeing actual buttons in a a car would be fascinating 😮
you have to go into screen and scroll a couple of pages to open glove box in a Tesla LOL
In terms of size, is he referring to the "200 series or GX prado?" 2:44 when he talks about the new Landcruiser 250 being "7.5 inches shorter, narrower and lower than the outgoing US Model..."
Yeah he is comparing a Prado with the 'real' Land Cruiser 200/300. They dont get the full size one in the UK but I agree it is a bit of a misleading comparison as they are 2 distinct models
@@sheeshman9713 Awesome...was a bit confused for a moment there.👍
I remember the first review I saw Tom in. Such an iconic car. The DB9.
Great review.. it felt authentic and you shared your opinion unlike 99% of the other KZheadrs that read off a brochure for us lol
Love the modern/retro look of the Toyota Landcruiser and would love to see same shape but electric ;) I love the videos with Tom Ford, the best addition to the Top Gear team, he makes videos just better and awesome to watch, and he puts a great spin on everything. Hope to see more from him (like on TG podcasts) and maybe videos with his Fifth Gear mates like Johnny Smith
they really knocked it out of the park with this. Toyota has re-solidified itself as King.
2020 Defender Headlights.. those are the best today for me
Round headlights please!! But the square look good too!!
Are you sure this the successor to Land Cruiser but not the Land Cruiser Prado?? I think this is the new Prado but in a diff name in EU. J300 is the og LC, this is the J250 which is a direct successor to J150 which is the fourth gen Prado. Totally different vehicles which explains the reduction in size as said at 2:44
yup 100% for the rest of the world
It doesnt matter where you are in the world, theres lc70, lc250 and lc300, some countrys have them all some none of them. Its irritaring that journalist dont explain this.
That should hopefully be the nail in the coffin for the Anus Grenade, and will steal sales from the Defender. Lovely work Toyota.
"6 speed self-shifter".....when you have a word quota for your script and one short at the end😂
Tom Ford is a great presenter! He gives Bill Bailey vibes which I find hilarious! Been watching Tom since the Fifth gear days, would love to see more of him! 😊
Round headlights, no question. Would love a smaller 4-door version of this. Loved the FJ but the two doors was a deal breaker.
Theres a 2 door version in the middle east.
You're in luck! They're going to make a mini one, apparently.
So glad to see all those wonderful physical buttons. The proliferation of cars where everything is on a darn screen is infuriating, it's gone way too far. Hopefully this is a sign manufacturers are listening to their customers.
I like the half and half. Sick puppy.
I think in keeping up with the line/straight Ines in it's new design, the lights should have been more lined up than round light. The round light seems to contradict the lined design.
I dont get why they keep comparing it to a 200 series cruiser and acting like its shrunk.... Its a completely different platform guys, its a prado and its about the same size as the outgoing prado 😂.
Of course it’s smaller than the full sized Land Cruiser. That’s because it’s not a full size Land Cruiser. It’s the Prado, even though Toyota has chosen to not call it so in some markets.
Nice coverage of the new Land Cruiser-thanks! …and matching boots too.
Nice looking truck, may tempt me to trade in my Landcruiser Prado. What benefits would the hybrid bring over the 2.8l? Aren't you just lugging a battery about or am I missing something?
The round lights look 100 times better. I’m sure there will be plenty of aftermarket options to change back to the round lights.
Yushito Watanabe
Toyota really has found its design legs again- well done team! Definitely the round lights for me
The rectangle headlight version for me as the "... even more grumpier..." looks match my everyday mood
Very nice video, guys ! Keep em coming. My LC is going to be delivered soon :D
I think the square headlights look better than the round ones, idk why, maybe because the rest of the car has almost no circles besides the wheels
I agree. Seems more cohesive, given the angular fenders
Agreed, people say the round is like the 60 series, but fail to realise the best 60 series had square headlights
@@alexanderritchie5845 yeah. Huge difference between a 60 and a 62
With Toyota quality, design this good, and the price spot on, then its bye bye to your land rovers, broncos etc. The king is indeed back

I prefer the circle head lamps the reason being is that it makes it look more retro 🇹🇹🇹🇹🔥🔥
I really love that Toyota hasn't put all the controls in a screen. It's what I hate the most about new cars.

The different headlights/grilles for different trim levels is a trend I've noticed in American-market pickup trucks lately, so Toyota seems to be following that trend. The rectangular headlights look way better imo.
