FIRST LOOK: Mercedes EQG - Tank Turns And ALL The Torque
This is an electric G-class. The Mercedes EQG, as it was once called. It’s now, officially though, the Mercedes G580 with EQ Technology - which is a name no one will ever use.
Either way, a big battery and quad motors turn every celeb’s favourite urban cruiser into an electric heavyweight with zero tailpipe emissions.
The G580 name means it sits a rung below the G63 AMG model in the G-class range, but with over 800lb ft over torque and an electric motor for each wheel its party trick is on-the-spot ‘tank turns’.
A look-at-me viral # beckons, but does the addition of this all-electric version make for a better Mercedes G-class? Top Gear Magazine’s Deputy Editor, Ollie Kew, is your guide…

This? Or a G63?
This isn’t an EQG.
@@Robbert_nl you really are telling Top Gear that they are incorrect ?
G55
@@Zak1s1 Yes. Because it isn’t.
Cybertruck
If it’s not called the EQG, why put it in the title?
Because everyone knows it by that name. It would be pretty stupid not to use it. Just like everyone still calls Facebook "Facebook" and not Meta, or Twitter "Twitter" and not "X".
It's called g580

real
As long as it's still slammable and makes it destinct sound I'm ok with it.
since they only made changes to how the air inside the vehicle gets moved around by closing the door, i do consider this an improvement. should still be able to slam the heck out of it
@@tngdwn8350 did you hear any distinct sound? Because I sure as hell didn't hear a damn thing, no engine, no classic bank vault G-Thud..... Mercedes is becoming a husk of it's former self, AMG should buy their way out and escape before it's too late
@@johnnygeorgopoulos4072 He never slammed it in the video. Even then it sounded quite clicky compared to other cars and that's why I at least can imagine that it might be still distinct / G-wagonish sounding when slammed a little bit harder, but I can't tell from this video alone.
I’m sorry but it’s not a G wagon if you can close the door on the first try. The rest I don’t care hahahahaha
Only mor...ns or some Anglo-Saxon arrogant clowns have "problems" at closing the finest doors you can find in the automotive business.

Americans will understand how pivotal a proper quad motor setup is for off-roading. (Rivian)

Yes, but counting to “four” is the tricky part… Him playing with the differential locks: …not one, not two, but FOUR motors! The number three: and I took that personally
These will be the most affordable G-Wagons ever after 1 year of use. If you know, you know.
Shame you don’t know.
In L.A. these will all sell with a $50K mark up. 🤷🏼♂️😎
This could go either way. We will see in a year or two.
In Italy they start new at 152.000 usd. The “edition one” is a 207.000 usd toy 😅. I’ve no idea about EV’s depreciation.
@@andycombo They use dollars in Italy these days?
I was on board until you said 3090kg. Five fat blokes in the car and you're over the 3500kg limit of a car licence before you add their luggage. Building what would be an epic tow car and then rating it at 0kg towing capacity just to avoid breaching this limit is a bit of a joke to be honest.
It is A TOTAL joke to be honest.
Even it could tow, the range will probably drop to 50 miles making it useless. The electric G only exist to please the woke and climate overlords.
Most cars are that way and it's really daft. Needs to change.
Five fat blokes with an average weight of 82kg? In America those would be considered underweight.
G63 is 3,200 Kg
This will most likely sell like crazy in Norway.
Européen are most smart buying this bad design electrical G class!
God i hope not
It's probably fun to own, but I suspect the Rivian R1S is better in every objective way. And half the price for the same performance.
Where are you going to buy and service one of those in Norway?@@Cloxxki
Do they still heavily incentivise evs there?
I can’t wait for battery tech to get a bit lighter. 3090kg before you’ve sat in it is absurd for something that size.
3 tonnes, pot holes are bad enough, last thing we need are these on the school run.
Land Rover Discoveries have weighed very nearly as much for 20 years and nobody complained
@@smokeymotorsportbecause of the bumbling engineering choice of running a frame beneath a monocoque chassis
Stupid excuse. So it is around 18% heavier than a petrol G-wagon. It hardly makes any difference. But at least it doesn't emit any harmful exhaust particles/ gasses and a lot less brakepad dust! So it's much better for your childrens health!
@@Angusoksen The petrol and diesel ones are still too heavy, it's almost double the weight of the OG G-wagen, and it'll be producing more plastic particulate matter due to needing larger tyres and wearing them quicker because of the weight.
@@Angusoksenever heard about Plastic Particles? 18% more in the surrounding area with these cars, because of wear on the rubber tires.
i love the design. honestly the first full eq i love to look at.
Hating on every electric car doesn't make you look cool. I think this is the best electric car from Mercedes.
Low bar to clear 😂
@@DougC83 yeah 😂 I didn't like any of the previous Merc blob-like electric cars. This one thankfully looks good and has some cool features.

Meanwhile, Californians are switching to Rivians and spending the 6 figure they've saved on a new G-wagon on...more cars or house upgrades to show the homeless how to live better.
400 km promised 300 km in real world 150 km in highspeed 50 km in offroad
Low speed offroad driving might actually give better milage than motorways, I guess. It's high speed that kills range.
Thank god no figure for 'while towing'
Nonsense.
source trust me bro
@@SirMartinus Any semi serious off roading (not rock crawling) will eat through the battery in no time. Expect approximately 20 - 25% of the nominal range depending on conditions. And then you are left in the middle of nowhere with no plug to charge. The lighter Wrangler 4xe, in electric only drive, drops from 27miles on road to 4-5 miles off road. In any case, other than the press vehicles, no other G will ever see dirt below its wheels. Too expensive and fancy for off roading. Another posh-mobile to carry mafia bosses around Moscow and self entitled greenies to the Chanel boutique and back.
One of the few car that make the "electric conversion" less painful. I'm waiting to see it offroad
You still won't be able to afford it.
@@metricstormtrooper Maybe not, but it’s nice to see an EV with such an iconic shape. At least it’s not boring like a Tesla.. 😅
Is it more stable around turns due to low position of battery pack vs Standard G ?
The Best electric car ever. Well done Mercedes. The least painful conversion
Midway through the video I forgot this was a top gear review
Totally agree about the more tasteful sand coloured one. ❤ Landrover should have done this with the new Defender
1:50 "... and it won't be with any EQG badges or anything like that, that name is dead" I think you better re-do your video title then.
I remember the first time I got into my cousin's G wagon, closed the door and it didn't close on first try then I applied more force then it closed and made this loud clanging sound that I had to apologize only to be told that it's normal😅
Former G owner here… honestly I love this thing, let’s forget the EV hate. I like the base version muuuuch more.
Now if they had a removable/slideout girder or two full of battery slung across the car - under the rear seats - that'd be neat.
Oh I love the exhaust note!
Love that Mercedes still keep G as a proper G and didn't took EQS SUV inspiration 😊❤.
A proper G? This is not a proper G-Wagon. Looking past the huge fact its no longer front solid axle with portal hubs, its a disgrace to the heritage of the once off road capable German tank of a SUV.
@@Desert_Specpretty darn sure it only had portal axles on the 4x4 squared models, the 6x6, and that maybach one.
@@Desert_Spec The "proper" G the W461 doesn't have portal axles. It does still have solid front axles just like the Land Cruiser 70-series.
Now the front looks more like the Jimny. Can you still drive the G Electric with a normal license?
Just like the ICE G-Wagon, it is an utter waste of resources and likely a sign that you're a bit of a flute.
Any chance you are ever making the 2 door smaller version again?
How does rear wheel drive help range in an electric vehicle? There are no front fuel pumps like in an internal combustion motor and it already has front motors inbuilt?
It might be more effiicient that driving the front wheels. Also, having multiple motors can reduce heat buildup and associated losses. Providing motors can also coast without resistance, with or without clutch disconnect. In early Teslas, the rear motor was a strong inefficient one. The dual motor got an extra on the front that was way more efficient, making the AWD cars got further on the same battery. Modern Teslas also got more efficient motors in the back, so it didn't help AQDs anymore vs the RWD offerings.
It can disable the front motors which means less drag while driving, which means your using less energy cruising…
It's not that it is electric that puts me off, it's the things electric brings and takes away from the table. The towing, the range concessions, the ability to service the vehicle. All things taking a hit for what? Less noise out of your 3000 Kilo box and the ability to spin in circle on the Las Vegas Strip? Genuinely surprised they didn't go the diesel generator route for the reputation they have off road but we know these don't actually do that anymore.
Funny enough I actually did like the “kaclunk” when you slam the door
I would get this over the gas version
Does it have rear leg space?
460km is 285 miles. 460 is probably WLTP so multiply 460 by about .7 for EPA number. Is about 200 miles on a 100% charge. About I’ll guess 150 miles is truly usable…wow that is pathetic.
I have a friend who has a G63, and he gets abismal mileage on it. Electric G class makes a lot of sense. They aren't for traveling long distances. They are to be strolling around the city, which electric powertrains are best for.
Great Review 🎉
Let’s face it. No one is saving the planet with a 3 ton energy guzzling SUV whose manufacturing carbon footprint matches its heft
I wouldn't call it zero emissions, but it is cool to have an electric beast for the trail!
Rimac brought a ray of hope as it is the popular exotic for the electric car industry. The market for Evs will grow but only if Mhev's are promoted more.
So cool, hope it would get more range
Price?
Friend had minor accident in Tesla, guy hit him on a junction. 11 months without the car that's how long took them to rrpair and reset. Apparently they had no enough parts availlable and finally technician to do computer setting wizz at the end. This was in Poland
I think this car is pretty cool and well-made. The best electric car of Mercedes so far. We can't keep hating all the cars for just being electric... we can hate the C63s for sure with the dumbass 4-cylinder engine. This is a good one!
Was there a tank turn in the video, or only in the title?
Im sure that 720 spin is great for the tires
They should add all the aero improvements to the G63, I’ll just buy that instead then 😊
What a perfect vehicle to offset the carbon footprint of your private jet
The G wagon is one of the cars that could actually benefit from an EV. Most people that use them are moms and making a family car more quiet and smooth is not something I'd complain about. Plus, it will make it a more dynamic off roader with all the electronics
If they’ve removed the chunky heavy doors of yore, why not add soft close
This takeover of "zero compromise" mentality with technological developments is such a drag on the auto industry, wheres the actual compromising variant?
No yeah this is it, go drive one. AMG G wagons are travesties. It’s like a brick-shaped muscle car that is simultaneously not fast nor fun to drive nor good-handling. They’re great for looking like an absolute tool bag though.
@@seanp2k617 Yeah, and they cant even fill the role as a cheap off roader like a wrangler can, they should've just thrown a cheap diesel i4 or i6 into a stripped down base model and sold that too, wouldve been better than the mall crawlers they are, but diesel doesn't sell in america anymore either
Yes! now i can have the complete Tamiya experience...
Where does the wheel stay now?
5:10 Wrong car footage XD XD
nope
The only use i find of this electric g wagon would be in Bangladesh Where import tax on cars range from 128%-813% depending on the engine size and the import tax on electric cars is only 89%.
Missed the trim on the a pillar
Jeep Rubicons exist and can do way more off-road for a fraction of the cost. Plus the roof comes off.
This doesn’t sound like top gear review! Can you imagine what Jeremy would say about this car? 😂
Same 2018 screen heavy. Not a le to tow. Nice grill. 4 motors 2 speeds more problems. No front boot. No slamming doors. In 2018 they engineered the door that way like the old G. It's not an improvement.
Ngl this actually looks sick!
“I can already feel myself getting more aggressive, and entitled…”. 😂😎😂. So says EVERY G-wagon owner in Los Angeles!!
That bottom plate is impressive
Love the quad motors and the desert color scheme. The 113 kWh is too low though and the weight, come on, 3090kg! Thats insane for a car this size.
G63 is 3,200 Kg
@@Y2KvidsNo it's not.

That's not the same thing, but okay.
So when a new ICE G has launched, Mercedes has made a big deal on how the door closing sound is like the original?
0 towing capacity? That's not 0 compromises
3090kg! I drove over a bridge today with a 3 ton max load here in the UK... And I wasn't even offroading
its definitely the best they could do to make a electric G-Wagon, it has literally lost the robust little characteristics of a G, it is what it is
460km for a vehicle that is basically a brick. That's not bad. Am curious if it'll actually get that range though. Also, 580hp in something that looks as basic as that desert-coloured one is fantastic! It's like going for the 575hp supercharged V8 in a new Defender, but sticking it in a base version with those awesome steelies.
Lucky owners will complain that the roads in the Cheshire are terrible. It's because you all drive 3 tonne electric trucks. 🤯
It's great! I hopped they could hve put 140kw in it though... This won't get much more than 330km in real life
This Mercedes G really hit the spot 😏
So no one really got it when he said "the Pope might fancy one to impress his Boss"?
Put the spare wheel where it’s supposed to be el cheapos, but this will of course sell well ,,definitively an interesting car .👌🏾
Im just curious as to what kind of people would buy this G wagon
I would, currently driving an E63 Estate
if I didn;t already own a G550, i would
Nice review but you only mentioned the weight of it once, the caddy review it was a topic that minutes were devoted to. If electrification for the Escalade is bad and that only drives people on road, one would think that it would be something to discuss for a vehicle which is supposed to be a dual purpose vehicle. I'm a big fan of EVs but it seems like they aren't all being covered fairly.
Dude, nothing is covered fairly. They want you to buy the product.
such a huge bonet and front end but no frunk. the vw id buzz is the most sensible ev design yet. vans should be ev
That's German EV engineering for you. Outrageously lazy. Porsche does frunks, but that's a holdover from their petrol cars.
Remember the old Top gear, when they used to like maybe DRIVE the cars?
Thank God I will buy one for myself
8:27 I’m in active duty military and when he said “military grade” that makes me feel very concerned.
Those Susuki Jimnys look good
I can't wait to see a car that suddenly spinning around on the road instead of bouncing
why does it have a square spare tire mount zone ? 😭
The Chinese did tank in their BYD before Mercedes did.
The battery is massive and heavy to compensate for the weight of the vehicle and get its range. They should have made a standalone platform with lighter frame and panels. Then a smaller battery could have been used or keep the big battery and have a massive range. Ridiculous weight and no towing capacity and probably horrific price tag!!
Wait this can make a full about face from one spot?
I thought Top Gear was for people who loved to drive. That's the discerning difference between those who would purchase a milk float, of any kind and those who won't, of any kind.
This guy Ollie...cant stop drooling over this electric G but when reviewing the electric Escalade IQ (which has a way more impressive electric drivetrain) was suddenly asking himself existential questions about the weight of modern EV's and how useful they really are. Newsflash Ollie, this electric G will have a curbweight pushing 7000lbs, if you get hit as a pedestrian by this or an Escalade weighing 1500lbs more, the results won't be much different. Nobody needs an electric G-wagon; the shape is too inefficient (they cant even hide the battery pack properly), the interior room is less than most other SUV's of its size and you wont be taking it on those overlanding trips through remote areas due to range anxiety. So you have an immensely capable off-roader you can take anywhere on earth….as long as its within 200kms of an electric charger… I understand why MB made this car, but it’s just so useless. Another poser mobile. But ofc its a Merc so this presenter completely forgets any of that.
This lol, that was so bizarre, him questioning a pedestrians safety regarding the Escalade, as if any other giant brick of an suv or truck wouldn’t do the same thing.
I get the feeling they were quite limited on how negative they were willing or even permitted to be, and tried to make it up with blunt but funny sarcasm (G-class owner stereotypes)
at least value of these will probably be significantly lower used, unlike the ICE versions.
I welcome with a steadfast heart as a Mercedes fanboy the badge in the back denoting the horses under the hood, so to speak
Finally, a G wagon that will depreciate like a normal car. Might actually be able to afford one now😂
yeah because 850 mm of wading depth is good when you have to go off-road for a charging station?
I don’t know how much this has been thought about but I hate the way these new cars in a collision are going to crumple most things 2.5-3ton is ridiculous weight if you compare it to poor Jill or jack in there all they can afford 2006 ULEZ SUZUKI SWIFT or Ford Fiesta and the likes…
did the guy in the background at 3:15 relieved himself in the bushes?
why'd they put the charging cable in a non-lockable box on the outside? could've had an interior carrier for the cable and keep that space for something like a spare tire. At least the interior doesn't look as cheap.
One option does have a spare tyre rather than a useless tyre repair/inflation kit.
Whoa ! That journalist really loves that car !!
