FIRST DRIVE: New Toyota Land Cruiser vs Scotland

2024 ж. 1 Мам.

Few cars have set the internet alight in the past year quite like the new Toyota Land Cruiser. Just. Look. At. It!
Mixing a whole load of right angles with some retro FJ40 Land Cruiser vibes, the design is spot on. Thank goodness too, because after seven decades the Land Cruiser had become a dumpy and dull (if still capable and reliable) 4x4. Amazing how a little love from the design department can transform our expectations…
But has the new Land Cruiser got the goods to back up its new looks? It needs to clamber over the rough stuff like its ancestors, yet in the face of rivals like the Land Rover Defender, now be comfy and cosseting enough for the school run or daily commute.
To find out what’s what, Top Gear Magazine’s Head of Car Testing, Ollie Marriage, took the new Toyota Land Cruiser to Scotland for a rather tough first test.

  • His last point is the most important one tbh. Anyone that owns a Land Cruiser , take it for a spin around the country side. You dont have to be going hardcore , a bit of light offroading will do , but let it dance a bit and play in the mud. Let your Land Cruiser live.

After that, they were all small and sensible cars, but I always drove them for a long time. For me, cars are really only ever something practical and necessary and should not consume too much for the sake of the environment. Only the Land Cruiser is an exception here. A lot of new car releases at the moment seem to come with too many compromises. It's either too expensive, too "techy", too big, too ugly, or a combination of all four.

    • It’s likely that the more basic models at that price will not be built or imported for a good while, which means a couple of years hence, by which time they may well cost £60k+ with inflation; similar money to the First Edition. Beware of teething troubles or specifications that will soon change with First Editions. Land Rover brought the first edition Defenders out with the 2.0 diesel which they soon discontinued in favour of the 3.0 straight six, partly because their 2.0 proved to be unreliable at that time. It wouldn’t surprise me if a 2.0 was not reintroduced to the range to compete in price with this Cruiser though.

Then we left the highway and headed east to Canteen Creek. With every passing kilometre the revelation sank in. "Now I get it, this is a very good vehicle". Then last year my neighbour had to leave the country and sell his cars and one of them was a 120 Series Prado with 270,000kms on the odometer, so I bought it. Being the 120 GXL it also has 180 litre fuel capacity.

Yet in the EU version the switch has H4F (free?) H4L (center locked) and L4L (low, center locked), and only a button for rear locker and the other is empty, maybe for a front locker option? That would mean EU could get it triple locked from the factory which is awesome, but why the difference?

If Land Rover Can’t get their reliability right, they’re in trouble. LR has a lot of catching up to do, their model line up is currently outdated by most rivals. Their service department needs improvement, Some parts are on back order and the wait times are crazy. The Recent vehicle security vulnerabilities are not helping either. And the worst of all, Their entry level Discovery Sport and Evoque has lost touch with reality as they are getting long in the tooth and the retail price for those two doesn’t make sense in most market with the current economy.

Interestingly enough, in parts of Southeast Asia (i.e. Thailand and Indonesia, afaik), these engines are tuners' favorite. Us Indonesians love ladder-framed diesel-powered SUVs for a number of reason: 1. Decent fuel economy 2. Cheap(ish) running cost due to availability of cheap diesel fuel 3. Good tuning platform, at least from engine standpoint 4. Perceived prestige, since these vehicles are favored by high-ranking officials.
