Old Rusty Butchers Knife Restoration

Hello folks! Today I want to show you my new restoration project. Few weeks ago I was at flea market and bought this butcher knife. The shape of blade was very damage by rust. Handle of cleaver was plastic. I bought it because I like old stuff and made some interesting restorations for you.
Restoration process:
1) Electrolysis to remove main layers of rust.
2) Iron brushes to remove all black spots and some deep patina from blade.
3) I decided not to remove the back part, because it gives the cleaver an old look and looks like an integral part. What do you think? Should I have cleaned it or not? Please write your opinion in the comments.
4) I used ash tree to make handle for cleaver.
5) I used brass rivets.
6) Finally I used linseed oil for impregnation of the handle.
Sincerely, Alex. Thanks for attention!
Good luck and health to everyone! With best wishes, Alex!

  • Please don't be nervous, your English is excellent! Your projects are beautifully finished, and it's really gratifying to see someone who hasn't got an expensively equipped workshop and yet who is still determined and gifted enough to turn out such beautiful pieces. Your doing a brilliant job and your videos show that....so please, don't be nervous anymore. :)

  • Here's an idea when you get metal that is pitted like that. Head it up and hammer it with the pointy end of a ball peen hammer. Make it look like the hand hammered look is intentional. This also strengthens the blade a bit, if you get your fresh heat treat and tempering right after you do it. (it compresses the metal in spots, thus making it a bit stronger) It doesn't seem as sharp as it needs to be to be used for food. Some bluing compound would help too, if you like that look (they make it in black as well) and blued finishes can be used with food once dry and impregnated into the steel. Just some ideas, you always to the best job you can, and I respect that.

  • I am a fan of restoration channels and l see that peened over back edges on cleavers is very common . Is it a European habit to use metal to hit the cleaver ? And just so you are more comfortable with your English, you are easily understandable . Learning another language is difficult if you don't have someone who speaks that language to practice with. Stay healthy , don't worry about your English 🤗🤗

  • I wanted to thank you for as always awesome restoration but also thank you for making handle in light wood, not dark as always and for leaving hammered top of the cleaver. I own a almost 70 yeard old cleaver and it has beautiful red wood/ bronze handle. Often I hammer the top of it to go through meat so making it spotless and smooth is useless for me as an user. You created beautiful and useful tool! Love from Germany!
