Old Rusty Butchers Knife Restoration
Hello folks! Today I want to show you my new restoration project. Few weeks ago I was at flea market and bought this butcher knife. The shape of blade was very damage by rust. Handle of cleaver was plastic. I bought it because I like old stuff and made some interesting restorations for you.
Restoration process:
1) Electrolysis to remove main layers of rust.
2) Iron brushes to remove all black spots and some deep patina from blade.
3) I decided not to remove the back part, because it gives the cleaver an old look and looks like an integral part. What do you think? Should I have cleaned it or not? Please write your opinion in the comments.
4) I used ash tree to make handle for cleaver.
5) I used brass rivets.
6) Finally I used linseed oil for impregnation of the handle.
Sincerely, Alex. Thanks for attention!
Good luck and health to everyone! With best wishes, Alex!

don't be nervous, your english is great!
Thank you sir!
Please don't be nervous, your English is excellent! Your projects are beautifully finished, and it's really gratifying to see someone who hasn't got an expensively equipped workshop and yet who is still determined and gifted enough to turn out such beautiful pieces. Your doing a brilliant job and your videos show that....so please, don't be nervous anymore. :)
Thank you sir, will do! ^_^
I like the way you left the back of the cleaver...it gives great character to the piece!
The cleaver is perfect the way you restored it.
All the history of this tool is saved, and the tool is restored - best job I've seen.
Thank you sir!
You don’t have to be nervous 👍🏽, we all love your vids ❤️💯
I love watching your videos, and the way you restore things. I just wish the videos were longer.
Thank you I will try! ^_^
I loved the handle and the way you left the texture of the butcher knife.
another good restauration, i think that soon the mankind will need learn your skills
Here's an idea when you get metal that is pitted like that. Head it up and hammer it with the pointy end of a ball peen hammer. Make it look like the hand hammered look is intentional. This also strengthens the blade a bit, if you get your fresh heat treat and tempering right after you do it. (it compresses the metal in spots, thus making it a bit stronger) It doesn't seem as sharp as it needs to be to be used for food. Some bluing compound would help too, if you like that look (they make it in black as well) and blued finishes can be used with food once dry and impregnated into the steel. Just some ideas, you always to the best job you can, and I respect that.
I'm so glad you decided not to "clean" the back part. It's so beautiful as it is! Love the restoration you did. THat knife has so much character now.
I wanna here your beautiful native language with english subtitles so I could know what's up, maybe one of your videos! I liked that you kept the damage from hammering on the back and another awesome handle. Another great job thanks!
I am a fan of restoration channels and l see that peened over back edges on cleavers is very common . Is it a European habit to use metal to hit the cleaver ? And just so you are more comfortable with your English, you are easily understandable . Learning another language is difficult if you don't have someone who speaks that language to practice with. Stay healthy , don't worry about your English 🤗🤗
Thank you so much! Stay healthy too sir.
I wanted to thank you for as always awesome restoration but also thank you for making handle in light wood, not dark as always and for leaving hammered top of the cleaver. I own a almost 70 yeard old cleaver and it has beautiful red wood/ bronze handle. Often I hammer the top of it to go through meat so making it spotless and smooth is useless for me as an user. You created beautiful and useful tool! Love from Germany!
Hello Big brother. Love from India. Loved your too much. Words are less for you gentleman.😍😍😍😍😍😍
Amazing work. For me back side of cleaver is ok. Like. 👍⚒
Beautiful job!
👍 beautiful job...
Amazing work! I like this old style. Keep going. ❤
Good thing the top solid edge of the hammer strike knife didn 't start to strike, likes behind the video
Oh my God!!! It’s simply perfecto job. Thank you to teach yours pieces. Best regards 🇪🇸
Cara. Seus vídeos são verdadeiras aulas. Sou sou iniciante na arte da restauração e você tem me ensinado muito. Obrigado 👍🇧🇷👍
Good knife, cuts perfect. Who says it must always be a new knife? Cheers fm Singapore+
An other beautiful job, I like the black steel, very effective
Thank you so much!
This was great really enjoyed the rustic look leaving the back area the way it was
very beautiful object
Really enjoyed all the file work for the handle. I was hoping you would have cleaned off more of the pitting near the bevels of blade another 1/2 inch or so would have made a world of difference slicing those veggies.
Nice work as always. Keep it up
Good Restoration Done 👍
Good job!
Молодец, мужик. Далеко пойдешь.
That's great, I think the ridge on the back should be left, it adds to the 'old' look of it.
Personally, I Would Have Ground Off The Back And Refinished The Sides To Smooth, But Honestly, Id Like This For A Camping/Bushcraft/Chopping Kind Of Knife, Think That More Suits Its Look Than In The Kitchen. But Overall I Do Like It! Very Nice.
Amazing finish from such a start, I'm still not lucky enough to be able to find stuff in this condition to start with
Хорош,хорош...однозначно лайк!!
Perfect colored handle for the piece.
Very exciting, high recovery technology, I like your video, thank you for letting me learn a lot of practical things👍👍
Nice job as always man.
Some interesting tools starting appear in your workshop👍👍Great video keep them coming👍👍
Still very awesome job 👍
I like it...but I think I would have removed the hammered edge.
yummm..cabbage and potatoes...lets eat!
Really enjoy your videos. The pack rat in me wants to know where you find all the interesting things you restore and work on. Great work as always my friend. 👍
Nice job!!
This is nice bro Good job
When you took out the electrode before the cleaver, I wondered how electrolysis would have taken off so much metal?! Then my brain caught up ... Great video though!
Good work!! you did your best, the Knife was in really poor condition to begin with.
Nice work, pretty handle. Didn't like the back of the cleaver, you should have cleaned it and polish the blade to show the beauty of steel. Keep up the good work👍
Thank you!
Craftsman!!
Please leave it as it is, not only speaks about the cleaver being old, but instead you can see how many time it was hit by the top to aid the cutting, it looks great and for me that part is the special one, the one who will use will definetly need to hit to and the cleaver will be use as it always was.
es ist schön ,wieder eine neue arbeit zu sehen
Excellent work👍👍👍. Thanks for sharing. As for your English "STOP !!!!!!!! APOLOGIZING". You will get better. As for the knife you want to keep the character, blacken the blade with olive oil
so about your table. please make an restoration video about it . :)
I have good news sir. Two days ago I found in my garage good stuff for table, but now I need acetylene torch or big anglegrinder machine.
@@ScrewsAndTools That very good to hear.
Your English is great dude don’t be nervous :D
You're improving, all the time. Fun video, too. Cheers! :)
belissimo trabalho
Good restoration !.... but you must remove the back part ! Back part looks very ugly ! The blade needs sanding . Best regards ! J.H. 🇩🇰
O trabalho ficou bom. Pena que o cabo não foi chanfrado. Tupiara
Great job again my friend. Pleasure watching all your videos. Don't you dare be nervous. You speak great.....you have grown so much in your skills and your language from the beginning. Keep it up brother🔪👌
Thank you so much Cory!
Very nice job on a difficult subject. I'm glad you left it the way you did. I was also glad to see you use your knee on that vice. I thought I was the only guy that did stuff like that. Don't worry about your English. You're doing alright. I'm going to subscribe. You've got a good channel.
Thank you so much sir! ^_^
Another amazing video! Great job as always and I am looking forward to the next piece of art you make.
Thank you!
It would become to thin after cleanup. I would have polished it though, would have made an interesting look!
👍👍
How many knives and blades do you have?
Hello, nice question. Probably you you're interested I can make video like show room about my projects.
@@ScrewsAndTools: Its a Nice idea !!!! J.H. 🇩🇰
people that don't know about your KZhead channel may think that you're preparing for a zombie apocalypse :D
:D hahaha
Good restoration ;)
Be careful with that belt sharpener near your yaichki, Alex!
hahha))
I have a chopper 1 USA axe head I would love to see restored...
Is there someplace online we can go to buy your restorations?
Hello sir, thank you for attention. At this moment nope. I will try make some service for it.
Cool butcher knife, where can i find one! #BestRestoration
🔪👍 I notice in the older cleaver videos, you leave the hammer rolls on the spine of the blade. I suppose if you removed it, you'd have to polish the entire blade. That would then ruin the rough aged look you wanted to keep. Am i right?
I find your videos super enjoyable! Super interesting and really cool, keep at it :)
Thank you!!)
another wonderful restore,I was wondering what country you from, your english is getting much better, please don't be nervous ,you did excellent, hugs till next time.
I'm under the impression he's from one of those Viking countries But I can be mistaken...
Very good work ! Only some finishing details were missing !.....the back part and sanding the blade. I do not like it ! I'm a fan of your channel !!! I always watch your videos ! Regards ! Paula from ARGENTINA.
Thank you!
👍👍👍🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸
Yes should have fixed up the back and hey it isn't too late to do so, other than that nice job

I feel like I've seen this video already. I don't know why.
Please take up the gloves to your hands
Questions: Was the original handle Bakelite or just plastic? Why are you worried about your English? It's an incredibly stupid language that even native speakers can't speak properly. I wish everybody spoke German. Why not start a second channel for cooking? 😉
Hello sir, thank you for attention. It's was probably plastic, I cared about my English due to sometimes I make mistakes. Cooking in the kitchen?)
It’s not even close to sharp during test, you’ve neglected to remove the scale and putting, ya left the rolled top edge ( which is disgustingly ugly).... this is horrible. Next time leave it alone. I’m disappointed
