Old Rusty Butcher Knife Restoration

Hello folks! Today I want to show you my new restoration project! I found this old rusty butcher knife at flea market, as usual. Price was low: USD $1. For the first look, knife had hard view, very rusty blade + very short tang. Year of issue probably 1970-85. I removed all rusty from knife via rusty remover liquid. After via sandpaper removed old black color from blade.
Due to the tang of knife was very short. I made decision increase the length with a bolt-screw with size diameter 8.8 mm. I cut the bolt head and divided it. Then used two screws to connect to the main tang.
With first wood handle I got a fail, due to my file was very deep and I get a hole in handle. In second time I successful finished it. The knife handle was impregnation with linseed oil. I hope you enjoy this restoration video.
Sincerely, Alex. Thanks for attention!
Good luck and health to everyone! With best wishes, Alex!

  • I'm here for the restorations not perfect English, I live in NYC and speak a mix of languages but none of them perfectly. Great job on the restoration, like how you extended the short tang with the screw, it reminds me of a few knife makers that do that with a piece of wooden dowel and slide the handle on. Thanks for sharing!

  • Ingenious way to extend that tang if you don't have access to a welder. Personally, I would have left the threads on the back end usable and then counter sunk a nut in the end of the handle, so you have a mechanical bond as well as a glue bond. You do nice work. Do not apologize for your English or anything else. In fact, if you care to speak more, I really don't mind. I find accents interesting. The handle does look brilliant on this knife. Fits it more than just in the literal meaning. Turned a rather ugly, cheap knife into a beautiful creation. Never apologize for your materials being a problem. You work with what you have, there is no shame in this.

  • I'm able to understand what you say, that's good enough for me. I thought the restoration looked good, but one thing that could be problematic for the tang area are the hard 90° edges. Rounded edges are usually better off just for stability's sake of the tang as after heavy use, it can snap there, particularly on hardened steels. But still it's fine nonetheless. One thing to do other than filing or grinding it in, you can also put a small drill bit through there to create a round area to reduce stress
