Rusty Butcher's Cleaver Knife Restoration

I found this rusted butcher's cleaver and thought it looked like a really good candidate for a restoration project. I'm really happy with how it turned out since this is my first try and any sort of knife making.
I didn't like the original handle design, so I decided to remove the steel ring at the top of the handle and add a third brass rivet to fully secure my new custom made wooden scales instead.
If you think you know what type of wood I made the scales / handle blanks out of, go ahead and guess what they are in the description.
Thanks for watching!

handles look like mahogany
Definitely not mahogany
Es ist Buche.
Something about these videos makes feel soo relaxed. Nice clear video with no unnecessary talking and good info when you use products to help restore.
What I like about this video is that not everything goes completely perfectly, but you just roll with it and still come out with a beautiful product. Well done!
I really liked how you were willing to change tools shaping the handle and admit that your first choice might not have been the best. Also an ex chef for 20+ years I’m even more pleased to see someone call a meat cleaver a meat cleaver. Personally I like some curve on my blade but not quite as much as you have here. I like to be able to nick a cutlet but also separate a loin of beef on the bone. But that’s very subjective, a brilliant restoration, very well done.
Looking on Craigslist earlier today I see a vintage cleaver I think I might want to purchase and make my first attempt at restoring. Imagine my utter shock when I open KZhead and see in my suggested videos a video of someone restoring THE EXACT SAME CLEAVER.
Where did you see?
@@IronManRestoration it was in Michigan, USA
Anyone else terrified he was going to lose a thumb while cutting the rivets?
Colin Schmidt no

Дурака не жалко!
Hi🚭🚬😎👍👌🤙🤟🤘⚓
yep... only a idiot keeps his thumb out like that.
A brass cap on the handle would have finished that off a treat , lovely looking piece nice work.👍
Yep...I was right, beautiful workmanship as usual. But why you would use a hacksaw to cut wood when it seems like you have every tool/piece of equipment known to man and know it's wrong is actually very funny and definitely adds to the video. But I guess you had your reason.
Fetish
Wood looked like Cherry or Red Oak. Came out nice, enjoyed it.
“Hacksaw is not ideal for cuting wood“ Literally 3 seconds late he is using a band saw
Duckilla 12 the only reason a hack saw is not good for wood is Bc the teeth are so small. Bandsaws have larger teeth and they move much faster. And are also easier to make precise cuts with
Yes but couldn't he have just used the bandsaw to cut the wood instead of hacksaw?
Hala Al-Hadeethi he probably could have unless that board was too long to cut comfortably with the bandsaw.
@@thomasteniente5209 fair enough!
@@xXHaloOshiXx I thought the same thing.
The outcome is what counts... Looks great!!
awesome... thanks for no music 👍👍👍
Super jest to odrestaurowane ten cały tasak pozdrawiam serdecznie 👍👍👍👍
That's a good solid old cleaver. Glad to see it going back into service again. Your knife making skills will improve with practice and watching the experts. It'll do the job, that's the main thing.
Actually the best Restoration Channel
You haven't seen "my mechanics?" More attention to detail there.
Agree with My Mechanics, also Hand Tool Rescue for more mechanical restorations.
Btw I’m watching this because I recently came across a vintage F Dick 7x60 made in Germany. It was sold to me by an antique vender with ties to the Newton family and reportedly came right out of Joe Newton’s shed, actually sons shed, or grandsons shed because Joe has been dead a while and his son recently died so yeah got to love those grandchildren. Anyways I am going to try and restore it it doesn’t need much still has the original handle not split just a little rust. Seeing you remove rust with sandpaper well thanks for that.
Turned out great! Top craftsmanship again!!
I actually have to comment before watching because I'm thinking what is he going to do with that mess! But I'm sure it will be a beautiful piece of workmanship! Can't wait till the end!
Please use protection gloves, security first, btw excellent work, amigo!
Never fail beautiful craftsmanship!👍🏻❤️😊
Like my Grandfather always said no such thing as the wrong tool if it gets the job done.
Highlordratick your grandfather said true
Your grandfather was a fucking idiot! That's why someone coined the phrase: "The right tool for the right job".
Amazing work!!!
WOW!!!! That's one beautiful restoration.....
Beautiful video. Looking forward to new projects like this.
midei my friend I have one yes like it alI find on old house
Good job man.
Tom Chitwood yes
A very good job,well done sir!👍👍
Pretty nice! Ready to use one more!
Great restoration! I am going to take a wild stab at this and say that it is either maple or mahogany
I love these.
Very nicely done.. those handles turned out beautiful...
That handle is sweet. Great job.
Solid work. The camera work was clean, nicely edited, you used electrolysis (always a fan favorite), the handle turned out well. I thoroughly enjoyed the video. Side note: you're talented enough, throw in a curve ball video every once in awhile. Something that is completely unlike the others. Be bold. But keep it coming with the usual stuff. I have needs.
Well done looks great
Finish is great!
Fantastic job it looks great 👍🏻
Good job!
Nice work as always🙂👍🏼
It js my belief that while the restoration vids are quite awesome, some of these guys purposely get their stuff rusty juat to use in the vids. Ffs guys it doesnt have to be rusty in order to need a restoration
Very nice and clean job!!!
Good choice, well done. 👍🏻👍🏻
You're really full of tricks!
Fantastic restoration
Nice job you got another subscriber.
Ha, you got me to subscribe. Some of your restorations are something else, but I like where you are going. I see you are learning, along with the rest of us. For instance the handle, you took the time to grind off the brass rods and shape the wood, but ended up cutting a taper on the band saw and cut all that work off anyway. ??? Also, as an aspect to restoration is duplicating some of the methods used to make the peace in the first place, along with eliminating some of the ridiculous bits. You did good tossing the collar, but you didn't "rivet" the brass pins. The spreading out the ends before grinding them smooth will prevent them from working them selves out. Also the gap in the wood long the tang, I would thing filling with epoxy could help protect the metal underneath the wood, from rusting in the future.
Muito bom. Brasil. 👍👍
Very good restoration bro 🔥🔥🔥🔥👍👍👍👍
Nice work!!
Nicely done and a beautiful result.😁
I'm happy that you are not one of those restorers who feel the inner urge to mirror polish every piece of metal they see.
Been looking for a good heavy cleaver with a large handle for a minute. They sure don't make them like they used to. Even the German ones feel like they're made for guys who wear medium sized gloves.
Really nice 👍 love the handle
Bravo pour la qualité de l'image 👍
Masterful.
Looks to me like red oak. You could have countersunk those rivet holes on the handle for security..Nice job overall.
Sweet 👍🏻 👍🏻
So there’s really not going to be a paper test ok
Because it wouldn't cut it lol
Un trabajo que me encanta.
Are you kidding me? That was ridiculously cool
Надо было востановить ручку в старом дизайне )
Have you considered using a spoke shave to save time shaping the handles on your restorations? Probably save time and sand paper.
great work👍
Супер, гипс сниму, свой топорик, попробую восстановить.
綺麗
Странно что имея станок он отпиливал доску ножевкой
Мазохист? Нет? )))
Very nice!
Что помешало поставить защитный колпак обратно?
Забыл наверное.
Amazing restoration! And i think its beech wood.
I also think that it's Beechwood. A good guess.
Gift cards are the best for mixing and spreading epoxies
Great work! Why no heat treatment?
You forgot to put that cap at the top of the handle back on
He said he left it off on purpose
screw that cap. it was stupid
Those that can,do. Those that can't, watch, with some, waiting to criticize. You just couldn't enjoy the process. Anyway, well done Sir. That's a bonefied zombie killer.
7:45 u don have a wood saw or somtin?
If he did, don't you think he would have used it?
well he did have "somtin"
Great restoration project! Is the wood...oak !
Dennis LeBlanc pain not oak
Are you restoring these as decorative pieces, or do you intend them to be used? Are you using food safe materials?
I have the strange feeling because of color the Handle is a cherry wood!
You can't tell if it's mahogany, cherry, red oak, or a number of other woods, by the color. You have to look at the grain, the flecs, the rays and the end grain, to see the pores, to properly identify a species of wood. Just my thoughts from Tucson.
Very nice...
Is the handle cedar? Also if you're local to the Philly are I'd love to film and interview you for a cool piece.
The handle is not cedar, probably more like red oak.
What did you use on sand marks on metal handle
Is the wood quarter sawn oak?
gayle525 pain not oak
I know that pain when your shop is set up for wrong type of material... 99% of what I work with is wood and each time I have to do something with metal improvisation starts.
So I guess in the future, use the hacksaw to cut the brass rod and the bandsaw to cut the wood so the people watching can stop worrying if the next frame is fingers cut by the bandsaw, lol, still pretty entertaining video
Gangs of New York
Who Dat Dude? Where is it?
uh.... duh, its tree wood!
You know what? You did all right. Quite a few hairy moments there -thought you were gonna lose a few fingers on the bandsaw. And your choice of tools was a bit sketchy. But you did alright 👍
That's Oak.
I agree, but is it red oak or White Oak? White Oak is a closed grain, Red Oak is open grain . I suspect Red Oak, being that the rays are short.
I would like to know 3:00 , how many Time in and how much Volts and amperes
Wow
What voltage on the sodium bicarb bath ?
Seems like your still kind of new maybe I should watch some newer videos. Maybe I have already idk but came out really nice
В идеале не хватает рисунка, травлением ! Лайк !
Good job, Beautiful satin finish on the blade...New scales are ok but.... Why you didn't put te bolster back?If you restoring something you need to do this like it was....And the clever had to have a square tip,the round tip that it have is from lot of years of use and abuse.... I was enjoying your video and its a good job!
A question I've had but never asked on many knife restoration videos is: if you're going to grind the blade down past all the pitting anyway, why bother with the electric de-rusting?
Good question that I've never been asked. Rust wears down your sandpaper/whatever abrasive you're using much quicker. It's much easier in my experience to remove the rust before doing any sanding or grinding.
Comes out fine but why did he sand down the glue from the tape on an already finished blade and not fix it?
Try flattening a tiny spoon to make a useful tool for mixing epoxy
Why didn't you use the power saw instead of the hacksaw to cut the wood?
bro I will go to the dollar store and buy you a cheap hand saw lol
m t where is that store
Great video :) :) :) Iron wood :) :) :) :) :) :) :)
I have one look the same I find out all house that I’m remodeling
Hickory is my guess
It’s either Iroko or Utile.
What type of wood it is?
