Machining & Welding Road Milling Machine Hydraulic Cylinder barrel | TIG & MIG
In this video we are machining and welding a new barrel for a road milling machine (road profiler) hydraulic lift cylinder. The original cylinder barrel is damaged and has scratching the whole length inside so this will be a re-barrel machining and welding job. We start by machining the flanges off the barrel and machining the new cylinder barrel for weld prep. Then we fit and TIG weld the end flange onto the new barrel before MIG welding and then counter boring the weld back to spec. The 2nd flange is fitted and MIG welded with metal cored wire to complete. We are using our TM-26120G lathe, ProArc PT-201 welding positioner, WIA weldmatic 500i welder.

Curtis. Very good finish. Have you made a the welding jig for doing pipe or was that shop made. Only they are major money over here in England. Many thanks. Lisa.
@@lisaburnett3368 hey mate do you mean the adjustable steady roller setup? Yeah shop made but was actually made for our big lathe to steady jobs that extend from the spindle but works well for this too haha.
I watch them all. Usually on the television 📺 with a beer 🍺. Can’t comment on the Tele and have to use my phone to do so. It’s all good as that doubles your view count lol 😆. Cheers
sweet video ! looks like some gravy work there. I'm curious as to why you don't run the metal core hotter in spray arc ?
What gas mix You are using with mig? Nice work! 🙂
I like the fact that you show us viewers on what and where you repaired parts are used. Looking forward to your next job!
Hey mate thanks for watching and the feedback cheers 😎👍
Was about to write the same thing, really appreciate that I can see where parts or cylinders are used.
@@TheyCallMeMrGuns same here knowing what the work relates to really adds to how authentic this guy is just doing his work and sharing expertise - what about those flawless welds looked like they are robot welds.
I’m lucky enough to know what’s going on but I think it’s important that someone shows those that don’t, 40 years of repair work and still enjoy doing and watching others. When you get to old to learn your dead
Eddie legendS of machining like yourself live forever I assume you’ve helped a few or a lot of young apprentices get their repair credentials - thanks form the rest of us mate.
I like it a whole lot more hearing him explain the process of what he's doing rather than just music. Great videos.
Kurtis and Karen
@Bits & Bolts considering they do some after dark and expanded the workshop and the yt earnings means they're okay
@Bits & Bolts you do you. KZhead is lucrative if you play it right and can help you purchase plant and equipment. That's what they're doing.
Today, reviewing this old video, we can see his evolution and professional growth. Congratulations.
love the bloopers, enjoy the machining but show us more of the dog, he's a beaut !!
Hahaha we will try to keep his fans happy with more screen time and I know my misses is working on a bonus Shop dog video too 🤣👍
@@CuttingEdgeEngineering . Love the bit at the end where the dog is fed up!
@@CuttingEdgeEngineering .
Kurtis, as a machinist I see all of the unmentioned stuff that you do. Such as always protecting the cylinders by mounting brass shim stock to chuck jaws, and the beautiful welds that you do. You’re a master with the mig welder. I like how quickly that you’re able to move around from one task to the next. You’re ok in my book mate!
And the camera recording is very good. Wish I had access to this kind of instruction 40 years ago , it would have really sped up the learning. Fantastic for new machinists. Good job.
You are such a genius at parting the flange off. That's a sentence I never thought I would say to anyone!
🤣🤣🤣
I will never re-barrel a dozer hoojamawhatzit but I have learned a lot about machining from you. The more instruction the better. And good lord your tig skills...
I’m a 70 year old codger who has never had the opportunity to see a machine shop but thoroughly enjoy watching you work. I became a wood turner 7 years ago and love my lathes so I relate to what you do but nothing I do even comes close to your work. Another plus is I enjoy your accent. Thanks for sharing.
You guys rock, seriously. Thanks for the hard work on making these videos, we all appreciate it.
Hey mate thanks we appreciate the support! Cheers 😎👍
Best heavy machining channel on the 'tube! Keep it up, chips, dogs, bloopers and the missus' comments... nothing better! Stay clear of bbq and travel videos... except to the customer site(s) to see your works of art installed. 👍
Why am I sitting here watching Kurtis do his magic again? Am I addicted to perfection? He is a metal surgeon!
Your tig welding and mig welding is absolutely topnotch man. Doing the bevels the way you do is so much nicer the doing it with a torch
Cheers mate thanks for the comments 😎👍
Genius move adding those last few minutes to the videos. Brilliant!
Glad you like them! 😎👍
What best about this channel is they have a bloopers at the end of thw video, that make it fun to watch all day..
Attrezzatura tenuta con cura ,ed e uno dei pochi che sanno stringere i bulloni di una flangia in maniera corretta bravissimo
Complete respect
That sweet puppy so cute
I just gotta say. This is so much better to listen to, without the music. Thank you for taking our advice. It's so nice to hear the milling and grinding. I find myself lost in the moments watching it. And the silence around when you set the item is so zen. You're doing an amazing job with your videos. (and of course with the work itself as well. lol)
Hey mate yeah totally agree my misses likes to do a bit of the ASMR style except I like to have loud fan or music or swearing going on hahaa glad you're enjoying it thanks for the feedback. Cheers, Kurtis 😎👍
Dan L. I agree with all those comments.
just putting it out there, i like your vids with the sound of the machine and work being done rather than music in background. thanks
Mass respect..can’t wait to see the new biggie lathe in action.
Cheers mate hope you're staying warm over there 😎👍
It’s only -14 c today...not to bad...🥶..only about 1/2 meter of snow...your headed into your hot weather about now. I remember I visited the Kimberly’s in February in 1992 and about died! Kununurra and Halls Creek area.
A thing of beauty! Some of your finest work.
Cheers mate appreciate it 😎👊💥
Gosh! Somehow I missed this when first published, what a bonus, Tuesday CEE for me anyway. Thank you Kurtis, Giggler, and Homey!
Many thank Curtis, your videos are so informative. Thank you for uploading and giving me an insight into the lathe and milling processes of large components.
Thank you good tips for work 👍
There are still craftsman that take pride in their work by producing quality work.
That was a beautiful TIG weld.
to je radost na vaši práci koukat 👍👍
Nice work as usual, I see you moved your welding positioned up from the floor. Good move in my book. Cheers
Thanks mate yeah this job was small enough to have it up higher on the bench 😎👍
Beautiful! Just beautiful!
Brilliant work! Great dawg too! thanks
Великолепная работа! Спасибо за шикарное видео, удачи во всех делах!
Спасибо за просмотр
You do such great work. Love watching you repairing stuff.
Fine work!
GREETINGS FROM CANADA! You would make a great teacher in a tech school setting. You do so many things with a lathe that I didn't know were even possible. I have so much respect for your skills and knowledge. Cheers!
This makes me wanna go finish several small welding projects around my house!
I love your canine!
Beautiful Staffie. Everybody wants a sexy CNC lathe, but when shit breaks or needs reconditioning, guys like this get it done. Choice!
Thanks for watching mate you're not wrong! 😎👍
Great cinematography and great direction, you guys make a great team!
Cheers we both appreciate the feedback 😎👍
Good job , wonderful welding
TIG is such an art. Loved it when I was able to TIG. Should have stayed with that.
I'm hesitant to comment because I know you feel obliged to respond, but I just can't help myself. You three turn machining into a first-class educational and entertainment event! Kurtis, your welds look like artwork! The finished result looks too good to put back on a dirty machine like that! LOL Thanks so much and know that you are highly appreciated!
Love your channel . Really like the fact that you fix real world stuff.
Another rip snorter. You make it look easy which is the give away of real practical experience. I've alerted several people to your channel.
Hey Peter thanks for supporting and sharing our channel mate! Cheers, Kurtis 😎👍
Great idea having de boring bar in reverse easier to see what you are doing. First class job mate 👍👍👍🍻🍻🍻
Cheers John spot on there 😎👊💥
Yes I have seen were you spun the two pieces. When one is rotating clockwise and the other piece rotates counter clockwise it's hot welding! I've seen it done on several video programs. Very interesting process.
Well done
Incredible welding skills, 👍
Perfect job!!!!! I’m sure you are the top choice when someone needs machining work done on heavy duty hydraulic parts!!!! Incredible work as usual!
Hey mate thanks for watching and commenting 😎👍
Your weld bead is EXCELLENT !!!! A LOT of PRACTICES ~~~~~
I have machined large parts working in the GE gear plant lynn Massachusetts. Could be optical eluson but at 24:50 was flange perpendicular to shaft. Its great to watch a true craftsman do his work. GOOD JOB
I'll never be a machinist but these videos help me to understand the inner workings of my equipment and who knows - maybe I'll spot a problem BEFORE it needs a total rebuild.
Love to see another master of the trade that does everything in the shop! Machining, welding, assembly.... I do the same work in the U.S Fluid tech hydraulics
Nice job great to watch 👍👍
Curtis. Good watching machining. Great content. Thank you both.
Cheers really appreciate it 😎👍
Dang i wish my welds look like those. You have an amazing steady hand and perfect welds. Love watching the videos.
Gday, the old cylinder certainly had some scoring in the, almost say it was rooted, top job once again and throughly enjoyed watching, cheers Matty
Hey Matty thanks for watching mate hope it's been a good week for you, been hot as fuck up here summer well and truly arrived. Cheers, Kurtis 😎👍
I worked for a number of years for a big excavation company, as a mechanic. They always outsourced cylinder rebuilds, until i said that i could do it. I built a big machine kinda like a lathe, but it was for breaking loose the piston nut off the rod. When the rod or barrel were junk, they had to just purchase new, they didn't want to tool up to let me build the entire units, mainly cause they didn't want to be forced to paying me a higher wage, morons spent way more buying new rods and barrels, and could have saved or made money in the long run, cause there wasn't anybody in the state that would build them. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink. Nice work as always, would love to work with you. Take care and Cheers!!!
Like a stack o' dimes. Beautiful TIG work. Cheers.
Kurtis my friend. This was a great way to pass a bit of time today. Thanks bud. The tailstock chucks are amazing. Good job once again.
Hey mate hope you've had a good week been flat shit here 😎👍
@@CuttingEdgeEngineering Shine on bud.

That was a fantastic Tig weld , I give you 150% . Great job !
Great work as always, love watching this.
Thanks for watching mate 😎👊💥
Steady, methodically, and cleanly done. Enjoy your work concept. You have a happy pup there.
Hey John glad you enjoyed it mate 😎👍
My husband and I love watching these, he for the technical know how and I to see"how things are made" and then we both like to laugh at the giggles at the end too.
Awesome glad you both enjoy watching 😎👍
My respect for you! My work in Germany is similar to what you do. Unfortunately, I don't master the lathe as perfectly as you do. I work in the field of agricultural machinery repairs. You are the absolute specialist! Best regards from Germany ! Also many greetings to your camerawoman and your dog ...
Great skills for sure.. but man what a well equipped shop !!!!!!!
awesome work Kurtis look forward to seeing more of your work
Hey Dave thanks for watching mate 😎👍
Man you are crazy... That acurracy?? From another world. I love your videos.
Cheers mate thanks for watching 😎👍
Always look forward to the days when a new video is released. The content and the way it is presented is just perfect. I already repair plant machinery but hope to build my skills to this level as time progresses. Very interesting as always, looking forward to the next release...quality work man 👍🤙
Hey mate thanks very much for supporting the channel really appreciate it will keep the videos coming 😎👍
Very good work. Here you can see a professional. Absolute thumbs up!
Bravissimo Molto professionale
Good on you and the missus for all the filming; it takes teamwork.
Appreciate the great comment 😎👍
Todo un gran maestro,,saludos desde Nayarit México...
Hey dude really enjoy the content. I myself used to work in a tool shop as a welder, its nice to see some of the same techniques I used to do in your videos. Keep them coming!
Hey mate good stuff! Thanks for watching 😎👍
Excellent welding. Fine job! Great videos.
Muy agradecido por tus videos :D, tu trabajo es muy bueno
Like the live chuck
Happy new year! Found a video I must have overlooked!
GUESS I CANT TRY THIS ON MY WOOD LATHE? AWSOME VIDS!!!
❤ love from India 👍
I really enjoy watching your videos. Quite the machinist.
That is clever to have a dark color dog in a workshop, does not show the grease! Very good job mate! Thank you!
this has been my favorite video of the year! the tig welding and explanation of what and why and how you do everything, makes these video much more enjoyable for us people with less of an idea! keep up the great work. 👍
Mate - a fantastic job. You are very fortunate to be doing this work. I am envious. I SO wanted an apprenticeship in machining when I was a young bloke. You must have had some good teachers and importantly you must have taken your trade training very seriously. And it is here in OZ. Keep it up. A happy subscriber.
You have some serious mig welding skills.
Cheers mate 😎👍
I have been binge watching your videos. They are a pleasure to watch.
👍👍👍perfekt made it cylinder barrel..
God job, congratuletion
Enjoyed seeing the work sequence, didn't appear to be a minute wasted. All capped off by the out-takes. Keep'em Coming :)
Hey Paul thanks for watching mate glad you enjoyed it 😎👍
Great job kurtis
Besides being one hell of a machinist you’re a pretty dam good welder too!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Always a good day when CEE releases a new video.
