Machining and Welding Silicon Bronze repair Caterpillar Dozer track adjuster cylinder | Part 2
This video is Part 2 of repairing and replacing a Caterpillar D10 Dozer track adjuster cylinder that has been damaged. In this video we are machining and welding to repair the damaged track adjuster sleeve. First we machine down the damaged sleeve surfaces using our TM-1740G lathe before mig welding with silicon bronze to build up the machined steel surfaces. Then the sleeve goes back in the lathe for machining the silicon bronze back to spec. We also finish up completing the track adjuster cylinder barrel by welding the cap end onto the new barrel that we machined and honed in part 1.

Hey viewers thanks for watching today's video Part 2 of the D10 dozer track adjuster job! Looked like the Silicon Bronze went on well, though obviously it doesn't pay by it's self, may I ask what grade/composition it is?. Thanks. Correction, removed "Not" prior to went, don't know what happened there!
We use Silicon Bronze filler for build ups at work pretty often, what you got there is about as good as it ever goes on unless Tig is employed. We get into a good many ductile iron pistons and SB is the go to for that. Nice job!
@@steamfan7147 I've corrected my comment, I meant that it looked good, I've used TIG Bronze (not to a high standard), and does a great job, never considered it for surface build up. Thanks.

Heck, everything you do looks like you've been doing it a lifetime..
When I go back and watch one of your older videos I'm stunned how timid Homeless is. Great job making him a happy well adjusted dog!
😅 Timid isn't a word I would use to describe Homie. But you're being sarcastic, I know.
He really does seem subdued in this one. @@moehoward01
@moehoward01 not at all. In the older videos like this one he is shy. Nothing like the happy dog in the pack he is now.
@@stillraven9415 Huh. I'll have to watch more of the older ones. Darn. 😁
Am I the only one who is mesmerized by the turning of and milling of parts?
No, you're not. :D
No you’re not. Many of us love swarf porn.
This guy have some real skills
Nope.
I've been watching Abom79 for years now, and only after I watched snake, crocodile, 60 Minutes AUS, and wallaby vids did you come up. Great work, clean shop, and and beautiful dog! Hello and Happy NY from NY!
...its too bad that Abom79 and this guy can't visit each other-!!!
Abom79 is all about making videos as long as possible for the KZhead income, I've un-subscribed from his channel. He even reposted previous videos...
@@rizdalegend ...well, "ya can't please EVERYBODY!!!" I'm pretty sure that Abom79 can manage WITHOUT you- and so can the REST of us...!
@@rizdalegend I like watching his videos, but I have to skip though the 15 minutes of talking before he gets to work. A small explanation would be fine, but 10-15 minutes is way more than that for a simple part...
@@KimballPrecisionRifles I wish Kurtis would talk more, as it is simple to see he has a lot of knowledge of these specialized processes and techniques
Good to see the 4 legged Clerk of Works is keeping an eye on things.
Yeah he's never far away
You always need QC
I’m re-watching loads of these videos, there’s just so little content that’s up to this standard these days, I’m loving it! Some of them I’ve seen over 5 times now, but not so much with these earlier ones. According to KZhead I’ve already seen this one but I don’t remember. Anyway, keep up the great work, you’re both an inspiration.
Homeless is completely precious!!!! Great job Karen!!!
Man, that silicone bronze machines so nice. What a finish. Great work as usual
Makes me miss the machine shop. Had some good times working milling machines and lathes.
Love where this channel is going! Top shelf work from a machining and welding standpoint, excellent video quality, and a great shop dog:-) Keep up the good work!
Hey David thanks very much for the support and great comment. Cheers 😎👍
You do good work. Best wishes to you, your company and this channel.
that ain't no ordinary shop dog, that's "Homeless"!!!
You do very good work! I've done alot of line boring and some lathe work. I was the one taking broken machine's apart, having them repaired and reinstalling back on the machine's. Nice to watch and see how the repairs are done!
So awesome to watch an expert doing unreal work with such precision !!! This is very entertaining !!! Thank You !!!!
Greetings from Illinois, U.S.A. Great videos, I know nothing about machining, but I love the precision work you do. You don't give us a lot of technical chatter, but I wouldn't understand it anyway. Keep posting you work. I love watching the videos.
Kurt's, you're on a whole new level. Your technological skills are off the scale!
It’s good to see Homey stays at a safe distance from the lathe ❤
Staffie supervisor is a hard boss yet so bloody adorable!
He's very needy and demanding haha
Homey saying gotta go outside with the look of distain Love that puppy!!!
I have had to do some emergency hydaulic repair a couple times once braze welding split hydraulic lines with oxy/acetylene but this is pretty interesting stuff here. Great dog you got there.
So satisfying watching inner machine jewelry being made
I like Si Bronze myself. Turns and looks like gold in the curls. Nice.
And people like to underestimate tradies. Well done fellas!
Cheers mate! You won't see me doing an office job anytime 🤣
@@CuttingEdgeEngineering Who does your accounting and bill collecting? You need someone in the office to answer the phone as well. Does your office staff do the brews as well?
Hey mate my missus does all that she has a tax accounting background 😎👌
@@CuttingEdgeEngineering That totally works. My sister did that work for my brother-in-law but she doesn't have an accounting background. (She works for an accounting firm now.)
I do very much the same thing at work and my income is more than most engineers. Skilled craftsmen are hard to come by today. When it takes ten hours at $120 per hour to repair a $5000 component to as good or better than new in less time than getting a new one , the customer has no choice.
The age-old crafts, executed with modern technology, by a true craftsman. I’m an electrical/electronics type; even so, I find these videos fascinating and inspiring.
You do absolutely beautiful work and it seems like you can handle whatever job comes in the door. Not many around like you.
Another great series of vids; keep em' coming.
Cheers mate will do thanks for watching and commenting 😎👍

The bronze bands are very pretty!
Nice welding and machine work. Very well done!
Hello Kurtis and the video lady, who is definitely a one off, I doubt if many ladys would put up with the noise, the fumes and being so close up to the machines, because they are extra special shots 💐💐. And the Safety Officer looks really browned off with the supervision of the Boss, it really interferes with his food brakes, a hard day for him 🐕 👍. Excellent videos again both, allways interesting👍 Best wishes, Geoff Lewis, Wales, UK, 🏴
Really enjoy watching you work. It is amazing. Never thought about a master machinist having to be a master welder. Learn something new every day. Thanks for sharing. From Lockhart, Texas USA
Hey John thanks for watching all the way over there! I actually have more years welding experience than machining but would do machining over welding now any day haha Cheers mate, Kurtis 😎👍
All the old machinist I remember, were master welders too.....just like this man has said, you have to make what you can't buy.....love watching these videos and the pup....
Beautiful work✌👍 Welder/mechanic/jack of all trades here in California. Always amazes how ugly silicon bronze is welded up....yet its so damn beautiful when machined.
Dogie has discovered if he stays a distance from the lathe he avoids chips in his paws.
Yeah he avoids them pretty well and anything noisy he goes and hides in the office 🤣

Really amazed at what can be saved with some time and a tone of skill
I absolutely love to machine SilBr and AlBr. Such a pleasure to machine and it performs so well when used where you need it to.
some aluminium bronzes are so tough you cant turn them they have to be forged. yes it makes excellent bushings.

Awesome videos Kurtis love them!
it amazed me back years ago i was running a bobcat for a guy on a dozer (he wouldn't let me drive that) and he yelled at me for not greasing my bucket cylinder fittings and ignoring the squeaking so we greased that up then he turns around and throws the grease gun on a fitting near the tracks and then pumps and low and behold the track tightened up pretty cool system... idk if they all like that or what but that was cool ......... thanks for the video ......
I've heard a lot about silicon bronze but haven't used any with my powertig yet. It sounds like a very useful material to use.
Hey mate thanks for watching yeah it works well 😎👍
I saw it used for the first time about 20 or 25 years ago at A large Sheet metal/hvac shop SF Bay area, Duct work tack welds mostly, was a bit surprised to see it used as you did.
Good to see at 6:25 your safety manager was filling in to do a little QA on your machine work there Curtis. Keeping you on your toes I guess. LOL!

THIS IS THE VIDEO THAT I SUBSCRIBED TO YOUR CHANNEL!!!!!! THANK YOU MY FRIEND. PENNSYLVANIA, USA 👍👍☝☝☝
Great skills and technical know how
Hey Kurtis, I work for one of the big 3 here in the U.S., I work in suspension development & I use our machine shop for fixtures etc. Before the pandemic we were asked to participate in lathe, Bridgeport training regardless of our experience, when you were polishing that tube with the emery paper it reminded me of a training video we were shown where the operator put both ends of the Emery paper together & held it with his right hand, you know what happened, it pulled his arm in & around that work piece faster than you could say "oh crap", plus he passed out, instead of turning the machine off(they eventually did) his coworkers tried to pull him out...then that was the end of the video....GOD BLESS!!!
no long sleeves near machine tools either. i have been whacked on the wrist by linishing belts when they break its not much fun.
Loving your channel. I’m a novice hobbyist, I wonder if you could do a video on explaining the reasons/decisions of what inserts your use and why the different types are selected, especially when you change on one job? Keep up the great work.
