Machining a Polishing Drive Wheel | Using BIG Lathe Faceplate

2021 ж. 10 Мау.
1 158 399 Рет қаралды

In this video we are machining a concrete pipe polishing drive wheel. The wheel is oversize and needs the outer diameter machined down. We first set up the wheel in our 4 metre lathe with a 4 jaw chuck but quickly find out the wheel is warped and set up needs to be changed. So we set up our big 950mm (3’ foot) lathe faceplate and hold the wheel in place using toe clamps and a pipe centre in the tail stock. Machining down the OD was very interesting with tool clearance and we had to change it up a few times with different tools to get it completed. In this video we are using our LZMT CW6280D Centre Lathe.

    • Sounds like the sort of job where you get it back, with the customer saying it's a bit too big, and can you take a bit more off? I hate jobs where it's got to fit something, and they don't provide that for you to check the fit.

    • Ho have to do what you have to do if it does the job. Wouldn't it be easier if customers brought also those pads that screw on so you can verify measurements and the fit? Anyway it looks nice, better than it came in!

    • I think the setup was probably the safest possible. The thing looks really scary. The intermittent cut didn't help too much either. It is probably so that the attached stones will wear in and take care of the runout. Seems like You didn't have too much trouble with chatter. Those things tend to ring like a church bell. With the 4-jaw chuck You might have ran into that problem as there was no support for the rim. Glad that it went without any mishaps.

Stay safe, greetings to all from Tasmania. 👍😁🐕 Amazing what two people and a four legged shop boss manage to produce each week. Really enjoy this channel, this has to be in the top three engineering/machining shops on KZhead. All machining, no crap music, no hours of repeated statements or trying to sound like a teacher training the dumb, you get the picture. That would have made it narrower and to get the diameter square to the axis would have changed the diameter to a point where it would no longer touch the ID of whatever should be „polished“. The whobble might even help to function like a hone.

The serendipitous collation of the man, his know how and will, his self-deprecating sense of humour, his shop, his wife, her giggle and her camera artistry... and then for the cherry on top you put in this amazing friendly little ball of muscle in the form of a dog... and that's the formula for a magical popularity accruing half a million views and a quarter million subscribers. Changed everything. Just remember to put on a regular nozzle when you're done and wash everything down. Otherwise there will be grit left on the work that will rust. Once it's washed down, there will be very little rust. Good luck.

  • you clearly read all the comments on your KZhead channel, Idk how long you can keep that up with your current view rate, fun seeing the machining and hard work that goes in to fixing even a single piece of the behemoth machinery that comes in to your shop. I would love to work in a shop like this or out welding on an oil platform, I try to balance money hungry bastard with being a good person, clearly, machining is a good place to do both, as the costs are not cheap, and repairs are defiantly the spot to be when manufacturing is mostly done over seas, or more close to home when lobbing huge pieces of steel around.

    • They would still send it, it's a maintenance write off and they may not have the time equipment or manpower to clean it. In manufacturing, you must keep focused on keeping the equipment running or you may have 50 or more people getting paid to sweep the floor at a loss, not to mention, getting behind delivery schedules and raw materials backing up causing bottlenecks in production. Shipping issues, you may have 5 trucks a day contracted to ship your goods and if you cancel them due to being down, you may have to pay for them anyway. So if Kurtis charged for cleaning they would probably pay it.
