Replace BROKEN Tip on Ripper Shank for Caterpillar D11 Dozer | Welding Fabrication
This video is a job we did to replace a broken tip on a ripper shank for a Caterpillar D11 Dozer. This dozer has been ripping up very hard quartz rock and as with any heavy earthmoving equipment it is common for the ripper tip to break. First we cut off the broken end of the ripper shank using our UniMig straight line gas cutter and also bevel cut to weld prep the shank. We then fit and align the new ripper end before lots of welding. After the welding is complete we cut the ripper to shape using our 9” inch angle grinder. A lot of grinding is needed for shaping the ripper end to suite the ripper boot before drilling and counter sinking holes for the locking pins using our huge radial arm drill.
In this video we are using:
- Metalmaster HPM-150T Hydraulic Press
- UniMig CG30 Straight Line gas cutting machine
- Makita 2400W 9” inch Angle Grinder
- WIA Weldmatic 500i Welder
- Hafco ZX3050X16 Radial Arm Drill

Extreme profanity? Was that out of complaints by sensitive butthurt viewers or personal choice?
I couldn't give an actual number of passes. So could I just say a shitload of weld?
The profanity was not a problem. It’s reality. The bloopers are the best part, please don’t remove them. On occasion I have skipped the video to see the bloopers. You do great work and make videos that are interesting to watch. It’s not easy to do both. As a person skilled in my trade I often say, it’s not a matter of how much you know, or how perfect you are, it’s your ability to adapt and recover when things don’t go to plan that make a person truly good at their job. You obviously leave a significant amount out of the videos that won’t be interesting to most, but I know exactly how much work and stress goes into these jobs. And I cannot properly describe how psychopathic my wolf/husky dog is, but I feel like you might understand having seen your shop dog. Keep making great videos, average people enjoy them, even if advertisers don’t.
No wonder you need a break editing with Commentary 🤣🤣🤣🤣 you should do a voice over sometimes Karen.
"Extreme profanity" get stuffed KZhead. 😂 It's traditional Australian vernacular, swearing is a form of positive affirmation in Australia: "Bloody oath! Daz is a good cunt to work with, doesn't fuck about." 🇦🇺
I've been a trawlerman, a forester and a farmer and swearing is the only way to let stress out without breaking something or hitting something immovable. You're both doing great and unless swearing wrecks KZhead's algorithm then don't change a thing. The biggest attraction of this channel is how natural you both are, closely followed by an admiration of your respective skillsets and dedication to great work and vid's. Regards from Scotland.
longlowdog has nailed it. Well said m8.
Right! Also Cioran said that a man who doesn't swear can go crazy... ;)
Couldn't agree more!
As a fellow brit, a scotsmans vocabulary would not be complete without the f word!
I create new cuss words daily it is part of the working culture !!
The bloopers and the swears at the end are funny as. Everyone puts out vanilla vids - love that you aren't like everyone else.
@@user-gd7jv9ux4m Nooo
I agree. The inclusion of a blooper reel is wonderfully down to earth and honestly I just love watching them interact. Steele's enthusiasm is awesome, but this no-nonsense, no-apprentice, understated and salt of the earth approach is refreshing and inspiring.
So many great channels have been killed because of KZhead’s profanity censorship. As they would say in France, “You guys are a bunch of fucking cunts”, or something like that.
Why not make a new one out of one piece of metal the same tHickness as the original no welding
I cannot get enough of these extraordinary displays of engineering genius. No wonder the big operators send their toughest jobs for you to sort out. You’re the best I have ever seen. You know how to rebuild anything the correct way and you don’t cut corners. I’m glad I found your channel 👍
These repair videos are some of the most satisfying things I watch. Also, "right oh" and "how you going," are becoming some of my favorite hobby work phrases. Hopefully you never stop making these, it hits all the right spots in the brain.
24 - 25 mins : some real wizardry shaping the tip with the cutting discs. You have enviable hand eye coordination. Excellent video work too...
Yeah no kidding. That was impressive.
@@santeebandit3246 agreed. And what are ya gonna do? Mill it? Guess you have to get excellent at free hand angle grinding. Masterful indeed.
This has become a ritual for me on Fridays. No matter how bad the day is, I will make time for the new CEE video - it does make the day better after all. Cheers for making these, stay like you are!
does he own the entire shop and do all the work alone? i'm new to this channel.
@@jlelelr In short: Yes, it's Karen and him. They have a Q&A video which is worth watching - they also tell a bit of their journey in it.
@@Uli_Krosse thanks... what a guy. awesome!
I (54) love your channel Kurtis! Since I'm an industrial mechanic myself, I know something about what you're doing there. I have been making gears for large gearboxes for almost thirty years! I think it's really great that you still show the outtakes at the end of the video! This shows again and again that we are only human. Greetings from Bocholt Germany.
I welded bridge girders, worked with steel this thick, and played with heavy drills for years. Your videos bring back good (and really bad) memories. Thanks!!
hard but its great proud work that when you finish the day you feel like you did something that matters.
Yet another liar! You lie about your name!
@@MichaelKingsfordGray Who or what are you talking about?
@@taitorhead4168 YOU! You lie about your real name. That make you a cowardly infant, who needs to grow up.
@@MichaelKingsfordGray When has anybody told you my real name? I am confused and I believe you are as well.
Loved your use of CAD (Cardboard Aided Design) to shape the end of the ripper.
great material choice too ;)
It's refreshing to listen to someone work complete with swearing, laughing and poking fun like it used to be. Carry on Curtis Fucking wicked
Kurtis, I have no idea how many hours it's taken you to get great at what you do, but you are an inspiration. Pure magic watching you work!
I only just found you guys, nothing like this on KZhead, totally amazing!! what a team you both make, editing videos and the filming must take aslong as the job itself, well done to you both 👏
welcome to the channel!
Just for fun and addition to the viewing pleasure, I suggest getting a FLIR temp camera to show how and where the metals are getting hot.
One of the things I’ve noticed and love is the fact you zoom in on the dials and settings of the machinery to help us understand a bit more. Goes over my head half the time but I enjoy it none the less!
I've teared up ,been watching for 7 years, sensational crew , sensational channel thank you.
6:21 i cant fucking BELIEVE how clean that oxy cut is, hooooollllyyyyshittttttt
@NO NAME Even hand cuts can look really good if your expirienced and have a backing guide.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣swear bear 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I've honestly never seen anyone welding as well as you. That's god-level welding in its purest form. Love your channel and thoroughly enjoy the bloopers and foreign language at the end.
Thanks mate 😎👊💥
He's right ya know
Kurtis is speaking Australianese. It's a derivative of the Queen's English. Slang, profanity, the consistent shortening of words, ending random words with "o" or "ie" , and inexplicable phrases make up the majority of this language. The Prime Minister's are known to speak full Aussie in order to communicate fluently with the citizen's of our great Nation.
@Craftsman PK Go away
@Craftsman PK Bye
Glad to see the rerun.....will not be the same without Kurtis spicing it up a little with his descriptions.....cheers from Florida, Paul
I am a private security guard. I have nothing to do with what you do. But I am a person who is interested in every subject that develops himself. your videos take the stress out of my job, it's psychological therapy for me. Lots of love and respect from Turkey. Good luck with...
Being a retired welder/machinist/boiler maker/fabrication specialist I really enjoy your videos. Keep it up, good job. Enjoy the bloopers at the end also.
Love the Bloopers.. love the expressions on Kurtis’s face .. We often have a saying here in the U.K… “All the gear and no idea” but in your case .. “All the gear and all the idea”.. great shot Mrs Kurtis of the rebating tool in slow motion cutting the steel, brilliant repair, still amazes me how thick you can flame cut through thick steel..
Love that phrase, Glenn!
Karen's favourite machine. The press. Said no one ever. Always amazed at the straight smooth line that can be cut through such thick metal. Always looking forward to Kurtis vs clingwrap videos. Maybe next time. Thnx for another great video
what is amazing is how straight and how fast....I am thinking 8 to 11 inches [200mm to 275mm] per minute on 4" or 100mm plate....
Who needs ta swear! Just watchin' sparks and metal chips fly is enough ta bust any stress!!! Great stuff dude!!! Thanks!!!
I must also say a word about the excellent photography. The angles and close-ups are always spot on. Good on her!
Like the honesty of the first vid, shame you had to take it down, been a Heavy Diesel fitter in a past life, sometimes the description kurtis uses is accurate, amazing what the old hissing hacksaw can do in the right hands, keep up the awesome videos from NZ
Hissing Hacksaw.... LOL. I've always called them the Gas Axe. I love the little train track carriage thingy that automates the cut - the constant speed and no shaking creates a really impressive straight slice!
If I didn't see it I honestly would never have believed it was possible to cut so clean and precisely with a torch.
What I really enjoy about watching your videos is how methodically you do your work. The sign of a true professional. It is clear why your business is a success.
Man, you have some nice toys. Love that torch setup. You amaze me at what you can do in that shop. The camera work is incredible. Best shop channel on the net. Florida USA👍👍👍👍👍
Wow, thanks!
I appreciate that regular bottle jack in place of a machinist's jack. That's how you know you're doing big-boy work.
Safety officer in his safety goggles…. Absolutely the most adorable staffie on KZhead. Cheers 🍻 from America 🇺🇸
No kidding right? Cute little dude looking handsome as hell in his work shirt
When you have the tools for the job and you know how to use them. Awesome stuff.
Honestly, what blows me away MORE than the awesome videos, is that people break these things and actually find the piece that has broken off!
Sitting here, reading the title and thinking... Damn this is going to be a short one. I am so glad I was wrong and as per normal the level of workmanship going into your work is just on another level.
The amount of force involved there is incredible. Love seeing these massive pieces of equipment getting worked on! Thanks for bringing us along!
What did Kurtis say about the horsepower of this dozer... Let's say 800 to the tracks? Can you picture a team of 800 draft horses all harnessed to a "plow" this size to open up the rocky ground of a quarry site? The amount of sheer power being transmitted through this chunk of steel into the job, nearly boggles the mind! One day, off the tip snaps. Then one very skilled boffin in Oz says: "Bring it here mate. I'll set it right." A day later it's back on the job getting dragged through stoney earth by those 800 ponies...good for another 5 years or more.
That torch trolley setup paid for itself 10 minutes into this video!
You are one talented person and watching you do all this work alone is amazing. Your welding is beyond belief and you make it look so easy. Great job to you and a great video to your better half. Love your dog and he looks so happy with the two of you. Glad he got a home with people that love him.
Excellent video work on this one again. Karen brings us in close on every operation and it really helps with the detailed understanding of what's involved. I really got a sense for just how patient Homeless is when Kurtis was fitting him with the glasses - what a ham and a great part of the family.
I love watching a pro at work. They always make it look easy.
I'm a welder fabricator, and I think your good at explaining work process, and I will be watching alot more of your work
Its a gift to know precisely the correct point to switch to fast fwd mode for these. Just right amount of showing the details, and then speeding up to not get bored from the repetition. Brilliant!
Karen and Kurtis, thanks for not bleeping out with a 1000 hz tone any ultra descriptive phrases, I was only able to detect maybe 6 Fooks in the out takes.....as always, very enjoyable....this is one of my go to relaxation videos......Cheers, Paul
Another massive repair. The shop counterbore tool seemed to work ok too. Great outtakes Karen. Thanks again everyone.
Your video edit is amazing! So pleasant to watch. Thank you.
Nowadays I work with financial software all day inside but I grew up in a rural area so watching these videos reminds me a lot of growing up. Great work and that's an awesome doggo!
Love your videos. As a welding supervisor for navy vessels, you did a great job with how you executed this repair. Keep up the good work and can't wait for your next upload. .
Genuinely spat my drink out when he “pull started” the 9” 😂
I was a field mechanic and had to do that to a ripper shank for a excavator. It was 2" thick and I had to stick weld it used 50 lbs of 1018 rod and took all night. I was just getting the blankets on when the crew showed up and wanted to use it I said not yet.. now I sit on my boat and watch you do it.
This is the video that out of random popped up in my feed some year ago. I watched it, got hooked, and watched a dozen more videos that weekend :D See you this friday guys!
Enjoy your break Karen 👍. 🇬🇧🇦🇺
I always found the blooper footage or behind the scenes at the end enjoyable. It’s a shame, I enjoyed seeing the realism of what it takes doing videos and Curtis being himself. All I can do now is remember the good old days when people didn’t get offended or you had to worry about offending people.
I’ve only did that once. A lot of work goes into that. Love to watch you work because you know what you’re doing and you’re good at it. I look forward to your videos.
I love the bloopers... I think I know the real reason Curtis doesn't want an apprentice or someone to work for him.... He'd spend most of his day trying to explain what the fuk he wants them to do! 🤣😂 Love your work Curtis 👌👏👏👏👏
Your contractors are lucky to have a guy with your skills and knowledge - saves them a fortune - hope you charge well.
Speaking of ripper shanks, hi, Homey! Thinking about those outtakes, Karen’s editing is masterful; she even makes *you* look smooth! Have a great weekend, Team CEE!
I believe you are the best welder I have ever had the privilege of watching absolutely amazing work.
Love everything about these videos, the camerawork, the narration, the before and after shots, the out takes and of course, the dog 🐕. Thanks for sharing your expertise in this field.
Still worth watching again.....
Even funnier the second time. No need to remove the grey words just make it for adults 😉😉 it adds to enjoyment esp in the bloopers ☺️😊😁
The man do very difficult and amazing engineering jobs but his hardest moment is when he have to talk to the camera.
Can't believe on my vacation day I am watching someone else do the welding
Always like the explanations. Camera Lady does excellent work.
Thanks for uploading this video again. It's one of my favorites.
Extremely impressive welding and machining skills, but also great videography and editing. I love how he casually mentions that he made his own counter boring tool, a feat that in itself is beyond he capability of we mortals. Keep up the great work! I know you both work very, very hard. I wish you continued exponential success with your business!
WATCHING YOUR VIDEOS IS MY RELAXATION, PLUS IVE LEARNED A LOT. THANKS.
Impressive cutter, one pass for metal that thick is pretty good.
I bet I’m not the only one to hit the like button within the first 3 seconds!
Always.
Legend 😎👊💥
That is top of the line work! You guy's do some really fine work. Thanks mate.👍💪😁
Dude, you're the best, calm as a zombie with the golden hands of a master.
This channel never ceases to amaze. So good to see how big metal is handled and manipulated.
Love the inclusion of outtakes. Only human of course
What a blast! As we say in the South in the USA yall are pros! love it! More the better! Kurtis you are a genius! We all look forward to the next episode! be well
I enjoy watching Homeless interact with y’all, reminds me so much of mind before he passed. I also enjoy watching all the repairs and how you achieve each one plus your talent for this.
Nothing better than waking up and seeing the notification from the cee, my Friday morning company before I go to work. Congratulations to the couple for the great content
Had KZhead been around 40 years ago and I had watched this I would of taken this up as a trade vs service pipefitter.
I love going through these again. Never fail to be impressed with the chunks you work with Kurtis. The videography just keeps getting better and better. Great work guys...
hell of a job, hell of a repair, hell of a drill press. congratulations on being the best
Dam Kurtis, it's nice to see someone so good at what they do. Great camera and editing Karen and the best four leg friend Mr Homeless 😀 👍
Two in one week?...freaking me out there Mate!
Haha yeah I'm sure some people's schedules were all messed up with the 2 videos 🤣
@@CuttingEdgeEngineering I think there’s a video out there on KZhead about Homeless.....kzhead.info/sun/ZNttdq57moyKfo0/bejne.html Hilarious
They say in life that people tend to get animals that reflect or like to reflect their owners personalities or looks. Here their dog clearly reflects the owners personality & determination. "Big BALLS" because he tackles with great skills, jobs, few others would attempt. His partner behind the camera reflects the skills of a movie production team. Keep the vids coming!
Good thing the pup is wearing his hi-vis safety gear!
Seeing how it was a great video, it’ll be worth watching again.
Back to the roots! Dude’s. Fan Sweden 🇸🇪.
What a ripper of a video Kurtis, you Karen and Homeless big nuts are becoming the highlight of my day. Keep them coming.
It was one of the best. I learnt you can turn high speed steel in a lathe (broken drill) this week. And autoexpert says weld metal is stronger than original. Maybe a beep or little animated explosion every now and then might reduce the “ profanity”, and we can always add our own.
Is that a flux cored wire you are using, seems to have a scale on it.
Being the star of your own gig is tough.
It depends on what rod your using but yes most of the time welds are stronger metal then the parent or host material. That’s why you will see new cracks form right next to the edge of a new weld.
@@gardnep I noticed that too. also, how many MILES of wire and bottles of gas does he go thru in a month?
So he needs some holes. Does he drill a itty bitty hole then use a boring bar? NO!!! the man grabs a MOTHER HUGE DRILL PRESS FROM HELL and does the whole thing in one pass! Notice the chips; that steel is layered in hardness
They should call YTs own Demolition Dave... He blasts near housing all the time for pools & foundations, even near sewers....
9:30 Those cuts are so clean, amazing to think they were made by melting away the metal.
Outtakes are awesome!! Shows the real side of people that fix shit!! Lol. Doesn't come without the profanity!! 👍👍 Awesome
Gday Kurtis and Karen, I reckon when the tip breakers off it would go off with a bang, amazing how much punishment the tyne takes, the shop made counter bore tool works a treat, great video as always mate, thanks heaps, have a great weekend, Cheers
Shop made Countersink was bang on.He is one talented tradesman.
Amazing ripper nose repair. We have a workshop that also does this kind of repairs. We are called ESP Cape Town (Equipment spare parts) south africa. Love to see broken stuff get repaired. Great video Kurtis
I'm certainly glad that you re-posted this video as I missed it the first time. Incredible workmanship and skills shown throughout all of your videos by you and your Lady. Stay safe !!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I'm am so amazed at what you do. Very educational!
Sitting here in my CEE hoodie enjoying another great episode, thanks for all the effort you 3 put in.
Would there be any chance, in your videos, of explaining how much the customer would save having you repair an item over purchasing a new one - how much is a ripper tyne against a ballpark repair figure. That might encourage more customers.
1 video Kurtis said he could build 2 hydro rams and still have change left over to the cost of a factory one ,, and his time is faster turn around ,
Hey mate thanks for the suggestion we will do that more often 😎👍
@@CuttingEdgeEngineering Oh Cool. I came to the comments just to ask that same question. Even if you can't say how much the customer paid/saved, it would be cool to at least hear how much a replacement part would have cost.
This job simply can’t be done without very good experience and proper equipment, another quality job cheers 👍🏻
You're bloody good at what you do, love these videos keep it up
I knew I was right 20+ years ago arguing with my instructor that a lighter was the best way of lighting a torch. If Kurtis does it it's good enough for me!! Bet he even uses slip joint pliers for tightening regulators on bottles..
You are a very talented man Kurtis, Love all ya work and vids cheers man
Excellent work as always! Coming from fiddly little 6061 pieces with +/- .0001" factory automation work most of the time, I love the heavy, brute force nature of these machines and what it takes to keep them working!
