  • My favorite thing about Norm is that he always looks like he's just waiting for everyone else to realize how ridiculous it is that people keep letting him get away with being him.

    • @@Smorgasbord. the whole thing that makes him a comedy legend is A) his SNL role B) his ability to just ramble and talk absolute nonsense and still make it entertaining and hook you. His ability just to subvert your expectations with some absurd seemingly completely unrelated punchline with a ridiculously over explained setup never feels to make me smirk like an idiot.

    • He really liked using the contrivance of typical joke structure to great effect like that. He had a real knack for stripping a joke down to its barest components and then reassembling it by matching the irreverence of the joke with the irreverence of his delivering it in such a bizarre context

  • The “what?” was such a masterful display of inversion of reality. The way Norm could make you question your own sanity just by telling the most mundane story was truly incredible. Miss him so much.

    • What felt so weird is i was on a Norm binge for months, like i was literally putting Norm clips in my playlist and falling asleep to them, and then i come home from work that day, yay my favorite live stream is on, and within minutes they go into Norm Macdonald passed away today and it was just like WTF. Like you can't even believe it at first. I literally had to search it right then to accept it. Seen a lot of comments saying the same thing.

  • Conan was always Norm's best interviewer. Conan instinctively knew when to stop being the comedian and switch to being Norm's straight man.

    • Norm is simultaneously terrible and amazing at delivering a joke. It cannot be explained. Any other human on Earth - including seasoned professional joke tellers - telling this same joke would not get a single laugh, but somehow Norm always manages to pull it off. RIP, Norm.

  • Norm Macdonald is so F***ing funny. A savant of comedy. His quick wit, intellect and phrasing, camouflaged under a veneer of "aw shucks" naivete while delivering the punch line is so incredibly unique. The only comedian I can watch over and over and laugh as hard as if I was seeing the bit for the first time. RIP Norm.

  • I imagine Conan must be hurting right now, they were quite close. Considering the Team Coco channel hasn't stopped uploading Norm videos since his passing, I see that as a sign that he was truly beloved by the team. Cheers for sharing all this!

    • Honestly, I was super confused and sad when Norm MacDonald didn't make an appearance on one of the last Conan episodes but him being in the late stages of cancer totally makes sense why he was absent. I'm sure Conan reached out and was probably one of the few that was clued in on the fact that Norm was not doing well. Even watching one of the last videos Norm posted on his instagram, it's clear he was sick. Norm was a GOAT and he'll be missed. RIP. I'm glad Conan and his team are uploading these gems.

    • @@malcolmrjmcleod I don't know how to describe how I'm feeling. I've never been affected by the passing of a celebrity or someone I never met. This just feels different. I'm watching all the old videos and interviews - and figuring out how much he held it in. Of why he cried when he bid David Letterman farewell. The Ol' Chunk of Coal was a Diamond. These clips will carry his memory to further generations. I'm just so sad.

    • He probably is. The same for the moth joke. Listen to Conan's podcast after Norms death. Conan said that the jokes were not planned and it always caught him off guard.

    • Norm never does his act or stand-up jokes as a guest on a talk-show. He just picks some dad joke from the 1920s and then tells it as if he's lived it, stretching it out to three to five minutes. The jokes are old and well known, he's a pro who'd never come unprepared.

    • What's noteworthy isn't just that he gave the punchline. We all learn as little kids not to do that. But Norm gets away with it because he waits until he's sure _everyone_ gets the joke, they've processed it, they're ready for the next thing _and then_ Norm tells the punchline. It's the subversion of expectations at such a high level.

  • As someone who grew up watching Conan as a teenager (and whose sense of humor was very much shaped by his), I love seeing his old sets in high def. I still miss this era of late night and this era of comedy in general, before bits and skits started to feel generated to game algorithms.

  • What I love about watching these Norm & Conan clips is that with almost any other guest or in any other insert Conan wants to be the funniest guy in the room (and usually is), but with Norm he just used to let it go and you can see how much he admired Norm's genius and comedy. Truly sad that we won't get to see new clips, but happy that we get to see these old gems.

It especially hit hard, when I watched his Netflix special broadcast after his death, in his grail state. So yeah, some of us do cry sometimes. Brody Stevens suicide hit me hard as well
