"Well ya know...a man grows". Pure comedic gold.
A throw away line on his part that is better than most comedians entire career.
I'm convinced that wasn't a mistake and an improv. he likes to have mini-jokes in his jokes and he crafts jokes to have layers and asides. He probably thought of this as a funny idea to insert in this joke act. He pauses too like he's expecting it to be pointed out.
Conan's reaction was incredible 🤣😂
Honestly it is the BEST part of the joke. Because Norm messed up and got called out on it. Then you see him go "Ohhh damn I messed it up haha", and he comes up with such a good line to not only counter his mistake but to turn it into the joke. 10/10
@@moonbalancedd I suspect this, too. Maybe he just knows Conan that well to know where he's going to set stuff up, because later in the joke he had a fakeout that Conan played into perfectly with "I look across the hall but what do I see? An attendant, who took me to the part of the aquarium I REALLY wanted to go to."
I am convinced that a “four mile hike to see a dog turd “ was taken as the biggest complement ever by Norm
I think Norm was just putting him over to make up for always making Andy the butt of his jokes back in the day. The dog turd line is pretty weak, certainly not strong enough to unseat the likes of Norm. You see how much more credence the audience gives Andy’s joke because of Norm’s reaction to it, Norm knew what he was doing. I honestly think he gave him that reaction as well as the handshake to top it off in order to smooth over any unresolved beef Andy may have had. It’s a shame with that in mind that Andy had to go and speak ill of Norm after his passing in relation to how he feels he was treated by him. Andy just couldn’t cop a joke on the chin and move on, a bad trait for a talk show sidekick.
@@william5691 it's more likely that norm... Liked the joke. Crazy I know, but it sounds like you're the one that doesn't like Andy Any beef that he had with norm was most likely squashed behind the scenes. And further, if you're a big norm fan, you'd probably know norm wouldn't give any kind of praise to a joke he didn't actually think was funny
@@william5691 I like that you came up with this convoluted, alternate explanation to project your personal frustration with Andy onto Norm. That makes way more sense than the sensible, boring explanation that Norm simply liked Andy's joke.
Yes, so spot on. He buckled over and fell to the floor without saying anything. Imagine how that hike would actually be like. Four miles, exhaustion, exertion, all the way driven by purpose. And at the end the dog turd. Doesn't even matter then. The dog turd is holy by that point. Just like the youthful porpoise.
Especially since it was coming from the Swedish German Andy Richter
Norm built an entire career out of entertaining himself, and we all got to come along. RIP Norm. There will never be another like him.

I told this joke to a couple of kids in their early 20's, and they bought the story hook, line, and sinker. When I delivered the punchline, there was a long pause followed by one of them saying "I want to die." I laughed for a minute straight. Couldn't wish for a better response. Thanks, Norm.
That is awesome. Well played.

Well, I'll say this: When the news broke that Norm was no longer of this world, the first words on everyone's mind were, "Where was O.J. that night?"
It's easy to miss the perfect writing in the first part of the story. 'He went over across the pond to the fellers in Cambridge and he even stood up to them' 'I started to do stand up and travel, from here to there and here again.' Norm was quite the wordsmith.
Norm was a poet and a storyteller in my eyes, being funny was the cherry on top. Greatest comedian ever.

Let's all take a moment to appreciate how perfect Conan is a host for this style of jokes by Norm. No other host can give Norm the space and make him comfortable enough so that he can breathe and ramble on to develop his intricate wording and convoluted story lines. Even on Letterman (who was also a great Norm host!) you can see that Norm, when he's on the couch, is more constrained and has sharper stories. But only on Conan does he really let loose like this, leading to these amazing jokes/stories, such as this one and the moth joke.

I love how Andy makes him fall out of his chair with the dog turd comment, then Norm shook his hand.. he really appreciated that one!
Good ad lib make it "hike four miles to see a dog turd shaped like a cat turd."
0:07 - This is the best nodding I've ever seen in my life!
“No. NO. Don’t encourage that!” Lol Conan is awesome too, funny bit
Norm really had that “let’s see if you fall for this prank”-look in his eyes all the time. 🤣 RIP, Norm!
Most of the time he just amused himself, we just got to ride along.
