Hah never heard that one thank you!
Norm is absolutely amazing here but credit to Courtney for not taking herself or her projects so seriously that she couldn't laugh like hell at herself too. Love that.
Norm is indeed amazing but we wouldn't be watching this now without her.
what? she was just a human - contracts or not. laughing at a joke that was soo quick and brilliant. This was a 1 in a million joke done in 3 seconds.
And who doesn't have a crush on her?
That is the power of Norm's charm though. If it were someone else saying those things she probably wouldn't have laughed. RIP to a legend.
She said she knew she wasn't getting an Oscar from that project and didn't want to promote it anyway so she enjoyed Norm taking over
Courtney displays TRUCKLOADS of poise and class here. Other guests would've been annoyed by Norm burning up their airtime, but she knows how good he is and she lets him do what he does better than anyone in the business. And it pays off! Salute to Courtney. Rest in peace, Norm.
I think you have it backwards, norm is saving her. She’s boring and he’s saving the segment.
Imagine if he did this to Mel B. She'd be throwing a huge fit and whining.
but it was he time so he was a dick.
She has said that she dreaded having to promote this movie, she knew it was a disaster, Norm gave it more hype than it ever deserved.
I thought she was awesome here, and genuinely cracking up. I love seeing people's true sense of humor come out.
Carrot Top actually played clips from this interview at a show last night out of respect for Norm, huge respect to Carrot Top
I have never heard a bad word from any comedian about him. Seems like a great guy.

Courtney Thorne-Smith later told Vanity Fair, Every once in a while, I’ll run into Conan and he’ll apologize, and I say, ‘That was one of my favorite moments of my life.’ Teased by Norm Macdonald? Are you kidding? I did The Tonight Show once, and Don Rickles made fun of my father, and my father never stopped talking about it. This is my version of that. I told a story about my father telling a joke at my sister’s wedding, and then Don Rickles just went off on my father being crazy, and it was the high point of my father’s life. That’s how I felt when Norm teased me. It didn’t even occur to me that it could possibly be negative. I was beside myself. I was there to promote Chairman of the Board. I was not thrilled about having to do it, so when Norm took over, I’m like, Oh, thank you, God and Norm Macdonald. It was a blessing. Look - had I thought that Chairman of the Board was my path to an Oscar, I might have been offended. I did not. So it was a joy to be teased about it. Because I didn’t know what I was going to say [on the show]. I was like, Good, Norm, you take over. RIP Norm

Conan is a Harvard man but yea I get your point.
@@mikecantreed And he majored in History and Literature, Norm graduated high school 2 years early and was in college for Mathematics before he dropped out to pursue comedy. I love Norm...that's why we're here, of course! Although, they were piling on Carrot Top...but it was hilarious, so quick witted and funny! Sure, Carrot Top has a 70 million net worth, while Norm had a gambling addiction and passed away from cancer, sadly. And I mean no disrespect, it's just crazy how things work out. I love Norm and I hope his son Dylan is doing okay. A legend!
@@pashadyne Sure they were piling on! I'm no Carrot Top fan, but Courtney Thorne Smith was there to promote a movie, and they did the opposite and crapped all over it, which is why she and Conan are covering their faces while laughing because they know it's not cool to crap on a movie a guest is there to promote--which is funny. But Norm, as always, didn't care and just went for the jokes. I think I saw this back when it actually aired and it was soooo funny and still is. And to answer your other question, Carrot Top made his money through standup gigs, commercials, and I'm guessing shrewd investing? And then he put that towards steroids and got jacked.
@@pashadyne I'm guess I'm just sad that Carrot Top is alive and Norm is dead...and that is ME piling on! At least Conan is still going...I'm curious to check out his new show on HBO Max...
This was the first thing I remembered when I heard we'd lost Norm Macdonald. RIP Norm, you were mercilessly, relentlessly hilarious.
@@allison4970 You just proved that it works.
I remember watching this the night it aired!!! And I never forgot how hard Conan would laugh when he was with Norm. Looking back now, I understand why people are saying that Norm was a comedic genius.
@@biancastar6708 I saw it that night, too, and it never failed to amaze me how off the cuff funny Norm was! Acerbic, smart, and brutally funny.
I came back here to watch this after hearing of his passing. His joke at the end is legendary!! RIP
OMG GUYS, I just found a SNEAK PEEK OF CONAN ON HBO MAX!!!!! kzhead.info/sun/ZZmohLx7kZSvhK8/bejne.html…..
One of the greatest talk show segments of all time.
i love that at 6:28 when conan is trying to defend the guest he still has to look at his card to remember her name lmao
Great catch!! 🤣
BS
No she’s been on his show many times before
Carrot-top paid tribute to him at one of his shows by playing this clip and I think it's amazing
still with the props huh
Yeah, hats off to Carrot top. He's in Vegas, so it looks like his career survived.
Probably the best prop he's ever had
@@ramonmoreno8014 VERY good!
He had to cuz if carrot made it visible that norm bothers him , imagine what norm wud have done :D. So carrot killed two birds with one stone , appearing to be a nice person and not being in norms bad book . Jk tho
"I'm Just an Old Chunk of Coal. But I'm Gonna Be a Diamond Someday" - Norm Macdonald.
Shine on, you crazy diamond.
@@allison4970 Same
Actually that line is from his good friend and outlaw country songwriter Billy Joe Shaver
i remember jimmy neutron singing that
I love how the entire time Andy just looks on in admiration at Norm, a master of his craft.
Among the best clips of all time. Absolute classic!
The fact that Courtney Thorne-Smith later had a guest starring role on on of the episodes of his sitcom Norm shows he was really a class act. He will be missed ♥️
Showed class on her part as well. Very cool.
I didn't know that, thanks for sharing!
The last thing Norm says to her in that episode is "I'm sorry." I'd bet it was an actual apology to Courtney because Norm was, after all, a good man.
@@saraanic9436 holy cow, i didnt know! I truly believe he really felt that, as anything Norm said. Gosh, I always admired Norm, this just add another fact that proves he was a great great human being. I really loved and still love Norm.
@@saraanic9436 sorry for what? being really funny and charming and bringing attention to her promoting a movie. You people are so corny.
‘Box Office Poison’ The greatest movie title that never was. Rip Norm Macdonald.
And he was right, too. Carrot Top's film was one of the the biggest flops ever.
This never gets old. I've probably watched this a hundred times. Miss you so much Norm.
I've watched this clip a dozen times maybe two, and "box office poison" always gets me LOL
Norm's B.O.R.E.D joke is delivered perfectly and Conan's reaction is hysterical. After his initial laugh you can see a "damn he got me again" respectful look on his face
Brilliant!
Conan doesn't get enough credit as a talk show host. He knows exactly how to set up his comedian guests for a joke. This might be his greatest set up.
'' Do something with that you freak'' and the madlad actually does
@@rect7840 Conan is the only good talk show host
I love how much Courtney is laughing at Norm's jokes about Chairman of the Board. She knows that it's box office poison but is still trying so hard to keep it together.
What a unique spot to be in, trying to hold back laughing about your own project that she would want to succeed more than anything else.
This is just one of the great moments in television history.
This just hit me for the first time, even though I've watched countless times. Norm admits he saw her give an interview the night before on a competing show. He basically knew what she was going to talk about. He may have even heard the title already. But he still delivered it all like an absolute pro for our enjoyment.
Haha, that's awesome. I can see Norm taking notes and figuring out how to absolutely destroy and make it look like improv. Had me fooled up until now! Norm- a genius and dearly missed.~~~
@@aliciaanne once I realized it, I couldn't ignore the idea. Conan even mentions that Norm brought up Carrot top in his segment already... What are the odds norm warms up the crowd to carrot top in his own segment... Unless he had seen her interview the night before and heard her mention she's in a movie with carrot top. This whole theory has blown my mind. At first I didn't like it because it took away a bit of the magic for me, but now I almost appreciate it more.
Norm created this image of being sloppy and improvised in his delivery, but in reality he worked incredibly hard. He was a genius.
@@cisium1184 That he was. Dearly missed.
The chemistry between Conan and Norm was impeccable. RIP Norm, you'll always be in our hearts ❤️
OMG GUYS, I just found a SNEAK PEEK OF CONAN ON HBO MAX!!!!! kzhead.info/sun/ZZmohLx7kZSvhK8/bejne.html…..
Conan really knew how to take a step back and let the guest land great jokes. Norm was like Robin Williams in that you just had to unleash them.
6:14...he almost says “box office poison” but in a split second he realizes that he can build up the tension and make the joke hit even harder. If he would have just blurted it out, it still would have been hilarious, but with his self control he created one of the best moments of a talk show interview I’ve ever seen. Freakin genius, man. Norm is amazing.
Awesome observation 👌
He also wanted to protect Courtney from the brunt of it, so he made sure to premise it on Carrot Top.
Top 5 funniest things i heard in my life. When im in bad mood i listen to the box office poison and lmfao every time.
@@Vmole1 I hadn’t thought of that, but I believe you are right. Good call.
You are correct- he had the words, "Bo... I know what its gonna be called. If it has carrot top in it..." So, he does clarify that its a joke on Carrot Top and not her. Classy.
All these years, and still I never get bored of this.. Classic indeed.. RIP norm.. Conan for me is the best in all talk shows
The way he ended that restaurant story was comedy gold! 🤣🤣🤣
Chairman of the B-O-R-E-D is such a classic joke, and he just... improvised it in a couple seconds. Norm was a goddamn legend, I'm devastated by his passing. May he rest in peace and may his family find comfort.

Courtney Thorne-Smith didn't realize at the time, but she was such a gracious guest in the presence of such a hilarious train wreck, that Norm Macdonald immortalized her in this clip!
I think she knew what she was getting into. Norm wasn't exactly unknown at the time.
Strange it seems her career died right after this movie. Norm dead on balls accurate with "box office poison" .
@@search4truth104 her best work was in “Summer School “
She had a long run on According to Jim.
@Lars I love Summer School but she wasn't given much to work with. Any hot, tan blonde could have been in that role.
What makes Norms' quick comeback at the end even more hilarious is Conan reaction.
One of comedy's finest moments ever.
RIP Norm. I miss that dude so freaking much, can't believe he's gone.
R.I.P. Norm, crushed beneath a mountain of dog houses.
The longer you live the more death you see around you, wish I was 13yo again when life was more rich and full. Like the Pink floyd song goes, ''remember when you were young you shone like the sun'', I feel like its 4 pm now and the sun is getting dimmer, not for me but the people around me.

Absolutely perfectly said…it really is amazing
One of the best moments in Talk Show history... We really need you back Norm. See ya on the flip side bud.
Who doesn't love all four of those wonderful people! Pure joy.

Shame that some actresses can’t be allowed to age. Seems very nice and a great laugh! Wonder what she is doing now? Looked her up - she’s now 53. Also said - “In 1998, she starred in the box office flop Chairman of the Board with Carrot Top.”
She had a great sense of humor about it & seems to have the personality to match. I mostly know her from According to Jim but she should've been in way more stuff than she was.
